I chose to not hire them because their bid was more than three times the amount of other competitive bids.
Description of Work: I asked them to pour a concrete patio. All forms were in place they just had to pour the concrete.

Coulter Systems installed a french style drainage system in the basement/part of the garage of the house. The paperwork indicates a transferable lifetime warranty. After we bought the house in 2018 we had continued flooding in the basement where the drain system was installed (muddy water). They came out to the house to try to clean it and informed us to reach out if it happened again. Every few months we have called and left messages but nobody returns our call. We have sent emails since 2018, most of which have gone unanswered. The basement continues to flood where the drainage system is with thick, muddy water but we have been unsuccessful in having anyone come out to look at or rectify this issue. The only part of the basement that floods in excess is where this drainage system has been installed. We want the company to come and repair/redo the faulty drain system to prevent our basement from continued flooding.

I asked Coulter Systems to bid on the basement waterproofing job, and the owner, Rob Coulter, came to do the estimate. He was very confident, and very competent, and came up with a price slightly less than one of the other bids I got, though it was slightly less thorough. After checking with a contractor friend about the other contractor, I decided against Coulter Systems, though, since the other had been earnestly friendly as well as equally confident and competent. Coulter had also promised to email me the actual estimate, and hadn't done so by the end of the weekend. He called on 7/6 to try to schedule his doing the job, claiming that I had committed to using him and his company (not true). When I told him I was going with a different company, he got very angry, stopping just short of abusive. He tried to get me to renege on the other contractor, which was exactly what he thought I had done to him, so clearly he didn't mind the concept of reneging, just not to him. I pointed out that his people skills were a part of why I went with a different company, and he hung up.
Description of Work: This contractor DID NOT DO what followed. My basement had water coming through cinderblock walls (not cement block), with mold growing in the corners where there were outside downspouts. The job a different contractor did included installing a 'French Drain', by jack hammering the floor slab about 16 inches in from the wall, hauling the cement trash out, laying in perforated pipe, and covering it with gravel. Meanwhile they scraped down the walls, coated them with 'moldex' (some kind of mold remediation), and then painted the walls with Thoroseal (two coats). They drilled weep holes into each of the cores of the cinderblock in the bottom course, and then installed a six inch band of rigid bumpy plastic down to the top of the gravel, and then poured new cement over the gravel to hold the plastic strip tight to the wall. Water leaking through the weep holes would therefore be channeled by the plastic into the drain, and not onto the floor. They installed a new sump hole at the corner corresponding to the lowest point of the grade outside the house, put in a new pump, and plumbed it outside. They ditched the drain line out towards the street, well away from the foundation wall. They also ran the downspout at that corner of the house into the same drain line.

Response from Coulter Systems
My name is Rob Coulter and I am the owner of the company that is being reviewed. I am writing in response to the member review. Before I start I would like to point out the numerous positive reviews that I have received on Angie's List. I have been in business for 40 years with a clean record from the Better Business Bureau. I met with the member and gave a proposal that was identical to the competitor's contract that was chosen. I also would like to point out that the competitor that he chose worked for me for ten years and did quality work as well. At the end of my presentation he complemented me on the information that I had given him, and most certainly did say to me that he would like my company to do that job. He stated that he liked the detail of the proposal and the way it was presented to him. I thanked him more than once and indicated that I would send a proposal with a projected start date. I called him back a few days later to inquire on his preferred start date of the project, he then informed me that he had changed his mind and given the job to my previous employee. I was very surprised and disappointed, he stated that he had not in fact given me the go ahead on the project. The key to this whole issue is that he did in fact say to me, "I would like you to do this job." It then went into a back and forth of you said I had the job, and I never said that. Something changed after I left the house, I had asked him why he had decided to use the other contractor and he replied that he felt he wanted to use the other contractor even though his prices were a little higher. Something or someone made him change his mind and to put up a review like this is completely unnecessary. There was no abuse or name calling, I was disappointed and frustrated because so many of my jobs end on a positive note and friendly handshake. The only aspect that I can see that would be considered rude was when I realized that this phone conversation was going no where and would not benefit my company. I then decided to end the conversation as quickly as possible. Realistically, I am very surprised that the member took the time to write this lengthy review with what little transpired. With these reviews, any issue always has two sides and it becomes into a matter of he said she said. These reviews positive, or negative, stay on these sites permanently and can very much help or hinder small companies. I ask if you could please take the time to read through our many other positive reviews on Angie's List and come to a conclusion for yourself. Thank you for your time in reading my response.

They were great. They did a great job. They were clean. I didn’t have any issues in getting the whole thing done. The problem I had was, five years after the sump pump went, it was not really guaranteed or their life isn’t that long to begin with. So I had water then and they just came out and put in a new sump pump. I really didn’t have any problems after that. The price was good considering the size. I actually got other estimates as well. One was about the same price and the other was much higher. I had them out again to give me an estimate since I moved and it’s a different house now. I would use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used Coulter Systems. I last used their services in 2006 which is five years ago. They put in a new French drain and they also put in a sump pump. They put in a perimeter system all around the basement which is a rather large area.

Rob is the owner of Coulter System. His price was very competitive. He was very knowledgeable. He knew everything about our basement. He showed us the existing sump pump, talked about the whole idea, and where the water was coming from. He was very responsive and his work was very quick. He doesn't do all the work himself. He has had some guys who worked for him and they were not very professional.
Description of Work: Coulter System installed French drains in our basement in November of 2010.

We have had a crawl space that had two sump pumps, poorly placed, that never really took are of the water that would puddle during storms. We called several companyies, and Rob Coulter seemed most competent and confident about how to fix the problem. He suggested a special kind of back up pump for the sump pumps he would install that did not depend on batteries that might fail. His workers were clean, efficient and did an arduous task of hand carrying all the material in and out of the basement, walking through the house (path covered and protected) without any mess. It was amazing how well they worked, how the job was well done, and the price (while not the absolute lowest) was fair. Rob was not pushy, he presented a complete estimate with options for whatever we wished to do, and the work was done on time and in budget. Highly recommended.
Description of Work: Trenched perimeter of crawl space, installed perforated pipe, covered with crushed stone, installed two sump pumps in pits, installed siphon backup pump, opened garage floor to check for possible washout, sealed garage floor, repaired existing gaps in garage entrance, removed old misplaced sump pumps and sealed their pits, cleaned up.

Went very well. Foreman was extremely helpful and listened to my concerns. So far so good!
Description of Work: Had drains installed in crawl space and basement (very large areas) plus two sump pumps plus removed mold on walls and floor and applied paint sealant. Tremendous amount of digging and work. There were about 5 people and they worked incredibly hard and got the job done in 2 days as promised.

The crew was on-time and got right to work. Work performed was per the estimate. Pricing was reasonable and in-line with other estimates I had received. Checked several references and they were all satisfied. Work was only recently done (Dec 2005), so I will need to wait for an extended torrential downpour to fully rate the service. Lifetime, transferable warranty on the service (this seems standard, based upon other firms I spoke with).
Description of Work: Installation of French drains and sump pump in basement. Included jack hammering and digging a graduated trench around perimeter of basement, installing perforated pipe, encasing in crushed stone, installation of sump pump, covering with cement and blending in with original poured floor. The job took two days. Day 1 was the excavation and installation of pipe and stone. Day 2 was installation of pump and sealing with cement.
