Chris impressed me immediately with his quote. He got on our roof and took pictures of the chimney to SHOW me the cause of our problems. When Chris and his crew showed up, they were on-time, professional, and courteous. The work took two days and they cleaned up in-between and before they left at completion. I waited a year to write this review because I wanted to get through a year of rains to see how the work held up. We haven't had any problems at all and are very pleased with the work completed. We would definitely use and recommend Chris and his crew.

The pointing work that we discussed was done, but I wasn't informed when they were finished so we could do a look at the product (rental property), and wouldn't have known that they were finished if I hadn't traveled to the property on the day they were supposed to be finished and saw that all the scaffolding had been removed. Even though we discussed further work in exactly the same vicinity as the finished work, I was never contacted again. Seems silly that the contractor wouldn't want to perform work for a customer who paid on request and didn't hassle them.

It was a fair price. What I liked about him was when he came out he gave me a contract right there and then specifying everything that he was going to do. The time frame that he would get it done and he got it done in a timely manner. I needed to get it done at a short period of time because I wasn't getting the right heat. He responded immediately when I had a question about something.
Description of Work: I had a new heater and it wasn't functioning right and it's because some parts of the chimney had fallen in so he had to see if he could get it to blow out or everything he needs to do and it worked out.

After he left I reviewed the estimate. I obtained three other estimates from masonry contractors, all of which were less than 50% of McNamara's. Each of the four contractors, that I received estimates from, had different opinions of what the extent of the work should be done. The difference in price ranged about $1100 from hi to low(average price about $5100.).. One contractor recommended power washing the chimneys which I subsequently had done by my window washer for $150 total. None of the contractors called me back after submitting their estimates. The chimneys look great after power washing and I did some patchwork on the sidewalk myself. I will have maybe one or two other contractors (recommendations from friends) re-evaluate the chimneys P.S. Ewing & Son, whom I contacted initially for the $149 masonry deal, and who gave me an estimate of $5150.for the additional work that I requested, has not come to do the work that was part of the original Angie's list deal!
Description of Work: I requested an estimate for re-grouting my front side walk and the two stone chimneys on my home. The company representative (I do not recall his name) went up on the roof. He inspected and photographed both chimneys and the sidewalk. Prior to leaving, he gave me a computer generated estimate and the developed photos demonstrating some problems in the chimneys. The estimate also had some recommendations in addition to the work requested. If I accepted all the estimated work it would have cost over $11,000. If I agreed to have all the recommended work done he would give a 10% discount. He also requested a 50% deposit before starting any work.

Chris was totally unprofessional. He did not like the fact that he had to submit a bid and wait for us to interview other contractors. He felt that he should get the work immediately. In fact, he stated to me that if he left without a sign contract and I callled him back to do the work the price would go up 30%. Needless to say, I didn't use him and will not use him in the future.

[member name removed], You failed to mention that I had given you proposals and pictures for the same four chimneys in July 2008. You were correct that I wanted to know immediately. But, I figured that since I agreed to honor my prices given to you in 2008, you would agree to a quick decision.

I started out by placing a request on their website contact link, stating our problem and requesting we be contacted to arrange for an estimate. When I didn't hear back after a few days, I called their number, where I was greeted by a very unprofessional "Yeah? Chris McNamara........" that sounded like I was bothering/interrupting him. I explained that I had requested an estimate online & re-stated our problem, to which he responded "We will not come out just to re-do the top of the chimney!" He said he would do work which involved re-stucco from the top to the roofline, however. I told him that I was unsure of exactly the extent of what was needed, and asked if I could e-mail him some pictures of the chimney, for him to better see the problem and determine whether it required repairing just the top, down to the roofline, or a complete re-construction. Not for him to base any estimate on the pictures - - just to get an idea of what might be involved & whether it would be a job he'd be interested in doing and giving an estimate for after an in-person inspection. He gave me his e-mail address, I sent off the pictures with an explanation & re-cap of our conversation, and that's the last I ever heard from him. Disappointing, based on the reviews and Super Service & POH awards I'd seen in Angie's List. Maybe I caught him on a bad or busy day, but I don't think that explains why no initial response to my website request, the unprofessional manner in picking up my phone call, or the failure to respond at all to my e-mail & pictures. I ended up getting several other estimates and going with another highly-rated, local Angie's List contractor.
Description of Work: Nothing. Not at all the response (or lack of) that I expected based on their reviews in Angie's List. Did not respond to my request for an estimate.

Well, it was spring and yucky out. My camillia bush ( small tree) was just beginning to bloom. The workers put up scaffolding that gently protected my precious southern lady from falling debris. They were amazing. She faired very well and now we not only have a beautiful chimney, but a blooming camillia tree. Chris answered all questions and phone calls with lightening speed. He LISTENED to our needs and paid attention to my freaking out about my tree. He did such a great job that I doubt we will need his service as we have only 1 fireplace. I did recommend him to our neighbor, and I hope she will use his services.
Description of Work: Due to ice storms, our stucco chimney started to come apart at the seams...literally. He had to take all the stucco off, and rebuild with new concrete block and then restucco. After all completed, Chris had an expert in chimney flashing come and reflash everything. We requested the chimney to be painted ( a coating actually ) in a tan to match the exterior of the home. This was done magnificently! We are very pleased and would recommend him to anyone who asks!!

I was having repairs done to my stucco every other year and knew more were coming due to all of the hairline cracks. I heard about Chris through my son. He came over and went over my house in detail. I thought we would do more repairs until he gave me the longer term solution of applying a rubberized, caulk like compound to my entire house. I did my homework and found a couple references and saw their houses from 1 and 5 years ago and they still look beautiful. Well they just finished and my house looks like the first day it was built. No more cracks, no more filth, no more drain lines from the windows. That's the product. Now the company...I truly felt that Chris took a personal interest in my home, like it was his and wanted to do everythging he could to make it look great. He went above and beyond by replacing some flashing where needed and even a slate step that had eroded over time. His crew was professional and accomodating. At one point I called him "Dr. Stucco".

I called the company and spoke to the owner, Chris. He said it would be a while for him to visit but he wanted pictures of the house and the masontry issues. I supplied the pictures on April 14th but did not here from him. Given that Good Friday and Easter weekend were coming up in a couple days, I did not contact him until April 21st. When I spoke to the owner he asked if I was with another company. He said something about Hartel masonry. He also said he did not look at the pictures. I explained to him that this was my home and I did not know what he was talking about. I reviewed my original eml and thought the subject line, "Hartel Masonry" might have been misinterpreted. Hartel is my street. The full address was under my signature on the eml. I forwarded the pictures again explaining that "Hartel Masonry" was just what I put on the subject line and Hartel is my street. I assumed whatever was his issue was resolved. The owner returned my eml stating, "I'm unable to give you an estimate at this time. Please call NAME @ xxx-xxx-xxxx." Unprofessional and rude, period. Do not call Sincerely, Customer

It was perfect. He cleaned up. It just went perfect and I don’t often say that about contractors. We had to have it done quickly because we weren’t aware that there was a problem. We called him because we were getting a new furnace and the chimney was leaking so we wanted to get them done at the same time and they were recommended by someone in the business and he did a very good job. He is not the cheapest contractor from what I understand but he showed up on time and they did a very good job. They stuck to the price that they said. I really couldn’t come up with a complaint about him. We were very pleased with him. I’d rather get a better price but maybe I got what I paid for. The quality was excellent. He even came back to check things off hours to make sure everything was okay.

Chris showed me pictures that he had taken of the chimney showing the damage. He gave us four options and we decided to have the entire chimney restored down to the roof line and all of the joints re-pointed. This was done as well as a new stainless steel liner connecting the heater to the hot water heater, new bottom assembly and stainless steel cap on the top.Now the only thing left to do is paint the chimney which will take place in the spring/summer months. Him and John did a great job as well as his crew who did the pointing last week. The basement just had a new floor installed and Chris took extra steps to protect the floor.

Chris worked on the job while we were away. We gave him access via the cellar bulkhead door. He put his own lock on it before we left and put our lock back on when he was done. The upstairs cellar door has a weak security bolt which was locked the whole time. Chris and crew never entered the house other than the basement. He moved the moderate amount of junk in the basement to suit his access needs and helped putting a couple of things back when he came to collect the final payment. The basement walls look great, except for being dark gray. After giving the parging material a couple of weeks to set, I will paint it all white and add some more lighting.. (The basement is not living space. It has a dirt floor and is unfinished. It is strictly for storage and utilities.) Chris was the only one of the three masons we interviewed who actually listened to the fact that we wanted the basement stonework repaired and stabilized, not beautified. There is no point in making a utility space beautiful. It made a substantial difference in the price. Also, letting the work be done between Christmas and New Year's lowered the price because it enabled Chris to keep his people working during what is usually a dead week. The only drawback is that the whole house smells of the parging compound. (I have forced air heat which circulates any smell from anywhere in the house.) The smell is not strong and is only a bit annoying when I remember it's there. If that would bother you, I suggest you get basement work done in warm weather and buy a big fan. Chris finished just a few hours before we got back on the 1st and the smell has already faded into the background, so it's not a long-term issue. This is the second time I've used Chris for masonry work (see my review of a chimney repair a few months ago). I hope all the masonry work on the house is done for the rest of my life (I am 68), but if there is more to do, I will ask Chris to do it and not bother talking with anyone else.
Description of Work: Parged laid-up stone basement walls, repaired a dropout in the foundation, restored and coated structural columns in the basement. Knocked down and parged over a stretch of deteriorated plaster in the stairwell.
