The service provided was excellent. After we contacted them, they responded the next day. Upon checking the 2 issues it was determined that both the water heater and the sump pump needed to be replaced. They were able to get the replacements the same day and the job was completed within hours.
Description of Work: We had 2 issues that needed to be checked. The water heater was leaking and an alarm on our sump pump was consistently being activated.

My hot water heater failed. I called around for quotes and received all kinds of quotes that were in some cases very highly priced. Hophan quoted me a fair price for a 50 gallon replacement unit- bradford white propane with a blower assembly. I hired them for the job. I never used them before. They arrived on time, finished the job quickly, were clean, and professional. I would definitely hire them again.

Also found leaky washer faucet and replaced and soldered part. At the same time discovered washer hose leaking and replaced. Bill pointed out these additional issues prior to any repairs and we were very happy that he caught the problems before they turned into major leaks and possible water damage to the downstairs ceiling . They were very careful and clean laded down drop-clothes to protect the carpet and the work area. We would highly recommend Hophan Plumbing & Heating they did an awesome job. We will call them the next time we have any plumbing or heating issues.

They were great. Absolutely will use again. Highly recommend. They installed 2 sinks and 2 garbage disposals as well as dishwasher. The most important aspect is they were on time and great to work with. I have an old house and the plumbing was a mess. They cleaned it all up, ran new feeds to the kitchen and proper shut offs. Super guys and efficient.

We were closing all of the water lines to the outside in preparation of the winter, and could not turn off 1 of the valves. We contacted Hophan Plumbing and when they realized that the temperatures were to dip below freezing within 24 hours, they made arrangements to attend to our problem immediately. Within the hour they arrived at the house, and installed a new outside hose faucet and shut off the valve. We were very impressed and appreciative of their immediate action addressing our problem.

As a result of our contacting the Hophan Brothers due to a clog in the pipes, they were able to accommodate our emergeny request and immediately came to our house within an hour or 2 of our phone call. They took care of the clog and discovered that our old cast iron soil pipe was deteriorating and cracked and in need of replacement. We set up an appointment for them to return about a week later to replace the pipe. They informed us ahead of time that the project would take 2 days, along with giving us an estimate of the cost of the project and that we would be without access to the water line during that time. They worked with us to accommodate our schedule and completed the project very quickly and efficiently. They were on time, neat and professional in their work. We are very pleased with the results.
Description of Work: The first service call was to answer an emergency request from us for a clogged pipe. The second appointment was to replace the main soil pipe in our house.

We have used Hophan for over 10 years now. First when we lived in Queen Village, and now in the burbs. They are prompt, courteous, and always professional. They have squeezed us in for emergencies (like our hot water heater blowing when we were on our way out of town to a funeral -- just left a key and returned to hot water). Every Time we've called, they provide outstanding service. Despite what I read from a few others, I'm still going to use them because since 2002 they've never steered us wrong, let us down, done a bad job or given us a high price.

I was happy with the work they provided until the hiccup in my bathroom. I have older cement tile, that I really like, and they drilled a hole that was not meant to be. They wanted to conceal it with a material that I wasn't fond of. Since I disagreed with the opinion, they just pasted over the hole, and to this day has not been back to repair or replace missing tile.

One of the Hophan brothers came out and described in detail what they would do to fix the problems with the existing system. He would enlarge the existing sump hole to a standard size, install a new pit, install a PVC discharge system to go out the basement wall next to the sump hole, and then on the outside run the drainage pipe along the side of the home into the back yard that the water would run away from the back of the home down the back yard which has a natural slope. He wrote up the estimate for $1,200.00 and left it. After he left I noticed that the size of the pump was not noted on the estimate. I called and was told that they would either put in a 1/2HP or 3/4HP Pump. This was the first mistake - I did not tell him to write up a new estimate clearly stating the Make and size of the pump, but they had been recommended to us by a friend. We set up a date in October and I requested a day off from work. Two days prior to the scheduled day I received a phone call telling me they had to reschedule the job because of an emergency. This was the second mistake - I rescheduled even though he didn't seem to care that it would cost us another vacation day and how do you know about an emergency two days in advance? On the second scheduled date the other brother showed up with his crew. After starting the job he explained to me that he did not want to put the piping out the wall in the corner where his brother had said it would go because of the fuse box and wires and instead wanted to put it through the wall on the side of a window a couple of feet over. Reluctantly I agreed. (I found out later that two of my neighbors with the exact same style home have their sump pump piping going directly out in that same corner.) At the end of the job, I had an enlarged sump hole with PVC piping running straight up to the ceiling and instead of going out the wall on the left side of the window they ran the piping in front of the length of the window and then out the wall on the right side of it - almost to the middle of the basement! The whole mousetrap contraption of pvc pipe is held up with one plastic tie to the gas pipe! Outside the home I found that the hole for the piping was put through the vinyl siding instead of two inches lower which would have been under the lowest piece of siding. Then instead of the pipe running along side of the house into the back yard it came straight out through the garden and was laying on the top of the lawn about a foot and a half out aiming straight at our neighbors yard. When I asked how anyone was supposed to mow the lawn his reply was to just lift the pipe and mow under it. This would be quite a feat for someone to be able to lift a pipe in front of a mower and at the same time be behind it pushing the mower under what you are holding in front of it. This actually came from the person who bragged all day about the unbelievable home he purchased from a Doctor with his heated driveway, beautiful bathrooms and how meticulous he keeps it! When they left, I realized they had not left any box, paperwork, or guarantee for the sump pump they put in. I opened the lid to the pit to find out the Make of it and found that it was a 1/3 HP pump (The same size as the one we had) and I was unable to even see who made it! I poured water into the hole from a dehumidifier only to find out that when the water was discharging it leaked at a seam up at the ceiling falling back down on top of the lid to the pit. Hophan Brothers was supposed to get back to us with an estimate for updating the Master Bathroom, he even took a diagram that had been made to scale of what is currently there and two examples of what we would like done. I was told that they would call within the next week with a price for the bathroom and also for putting in shut off valves to the clothes washer and a new outside facuet. They have never called. For $1,200.00 the only thing that was done as promised was to have the hole already in the basement floor enlarged. We already had a good 1/3HP sump pump that worked perfectly fine in a sump hole which was barely bigger than it - so what good is a one year newer 1/3HP cheaper sump pump? I have no idea how much it will cost to have the pipe re-done properly through the basement wall and to have the piping outside the home run to the back of the house so that the water can drain away from the house down the slope of the yard as opposed to pooling along side the home and then going onto the neighbors yard. If anyone is wondering why we have not fought this personally or in small claims court - the reason is that: one - because of a friend's recomendation we failed to get a precise estimate - big lesson learned; and second - we had a beautiful, healthy Granddaughter born right after the sump pump fiasco that somehow contracted a virus in the Hospital were she was born. Within the first two month of her life she was rushed to an ER 3 times and spent over 31 days in hospitals fighting for her life. First ER was within 24 hours of her coming home where she was admitted into the birthing Hospital's NICU, then from there she was transported down to CHOP's ER and then into their NICU; and after coming home from CHOP was rushed back again within two weeks to another ER and spending another 10 days in a PICU. These were emergencies and no we didn't know about any one of them two days before they happened.
Description of Work: The services to have been performed were to have the existing sump hole in our home enlarged. The original one put in by the builder in 1970 was undersized being just a little bigger and deeper than a paint can. This system had the sump pump connected to a garden hose which the original owners of the home had laying across the cross beams from the front of the home to the back and thru the back wall. This original system also did not have a check valve so the length of garden hose from the floor up to the ceiling would empty back down into the sump hole each time the pump turned off. We had a 1/3HP Wayne Sump Pump which was only one year old and able to handle ground saturation from normal rainfall. But this system was not able to handle water from a heavy rainfall such as a hurricane when the water table would raise dramatically. This usually resulted in us getting a couple of inches in the basement coming up from underneath the basement floor. I had Hophan come out to give us an estimate to enlarge the sump hole, put in a bigger sump pump and pipe it out the basement wall right next to the sump hole. As the circuit breaker and an electrical outlet were located in the same corner as the orginal sump hole, no electrical work was necessary.

Summary: I will not do business with Hophan again. I have stopped payment on the check my wife gave them. My friends and familywill avoid Hophan plumbing. I called them for an emergency leak repair. I was charged ~$400 via a vague, handwritten invoice andwas left with 3 unnecessary holes hammered into my living room wall. Details: I'd been having problems with my baseboard heat so I bled the system Monday night (1/9). Tuesday morning, my wife finds water dripping into the basement and calls Hophan after getting the phone number from a neighbor. Hophan plumbing shows up at 1000 and solves the problem within 2 hours. Unfortunately, the damage they did in those 2 hours will take a lot of time and money to repair. To start, they punched a hole in the wall above the leak. But, they didn't measure so they punched a hole (with a claw hammer, not a drywall saw) 16and quot; away from where the leak (but got it on the next try). This hole was completely unnecessary for several reasons. First, there is no ceiling-subfloor gap, if the water is coming through the basement ceiling (actually the ground floor subfloor),of course there will be water in the wall 6and quot; above the leak. Second, the wall is not a wet wall; there are no pipes in that wall. Yet, there are now three holes in the wall (a third hole was placed at ceiling height because apparently the master craftsman at Hophan do not own a mirror or a flashlight. Finally, the holes were completely unnecessary because if they had checked the heating circuit in the floor above the living room, they would have (and eventually did) find the leaking pressure relief valve in the back of a closet. Only after they hammered three holes in the wall did they bother to do a thorough examination of the upstairs heating circuit and discover the faulty valve in the back of a closet. If the leak had occurred at some random point in time, I would understand the holes being made as they were trying to isolate an unknown leak. However, they were told about the recent (within 4hr) work on the heating circuit but ignored that information completely. I called Hophan this morning (1/11/2012) to try and resolve the problems but was unable to get a word in edgewise while the plumber got more and more agitated and shouted over me. My overall experience showed that Hophan are clumsy, poorly equipped and not the type of people you would like to have in your home.
Description of Work: Emergency repair of leak in heating circuit. There was a leak at a pressure relief valve in once circuit of our zoned, baseboard heat and they replaced the valve.

Response from Hophan Plumbing & Heating
The member had filled and bleed their heater the night before the call for emergency service. We have been called in many times to repair or fix situations that customers create on their own. Hophan Brothers received a call for emergency service and responded immediately., rearranging other calls for later in the day. The job at the residence was said to be a leak in their heating system. She had mentioned it had other leaks prior to this current situation. Mr. Hophan explained to her that he was unable to find the leak and would need to look behind the wall to ascertain where the leak was coming from. She approved the work and then stated that her deductible on her home owners policy was $2,000.00 and she was more than willing for us to do whatever was need to find the leak. We always do a professional job we measured in the basement where the leak is coming from. Mr. Hophan found the flow of water it was coming down the wall between the living room and dining room. He needed to remove a few different portions of the wall to find the leaking pipe. After the wall was open Mr. Hophan was able to find. The water was flowing profusely from the upstairs to the basement. Unfortunately Mr. Hophan found the leak which was coming from upstairs in closet where a exposed pipe had been damaged possibly by a suitcase being placed on top of it. She was very inquisitive regarding her heating system and was full of questions. As a trademen and professional he answered as many as he felt necessary, Much of what she wanted to know would require the study of heating systems and plumbing. This is an unfortunate situation where customers let things go and then need emergency service, again she was aware of the leak prior to the bleeding of the system. Hophan Brothers preformed the necessary and approved work to resolve the customer issue and was even asked when leaving about further work at the residence. Again we are fortunate this type of customer is few and far between for us and we are looking forward to a resolve of this unqualified complaint. The customer still owes for the services rendered. We will be moving forward to collect what is owed for our services, The customer approved all work and was satisfied when we left. Whatever discussions or pontificating happened after the fact is not fair to us or our business. We stand behind our work. On another note we use Angie’s List and are grateful for our opportunity to give our side of the story. Thank you for your time and have a good day. Sincerely, Hophan Brothers Plumbing & Heating, Inc

Response from Hophan Plumbing & Heating
Our customer informed all her neighbors not just one that we would be digging up the front of her house. We replaced a storm and sanitary sewers. While digging, we started to see the damage of the pipes, she was informed that her plumbing was leeching into the trench we were digging, showing that the problem was existing. While the site was excavated this neighbor tried to have my company use duct tape to fix her storm downspout, also was trying to get us to install a new lid while the hole was opened. I, Ryan Hophan, informed her that a City of Philadelphia permit is required and it also like the job we were preforming would have to be inspected. I also, informed her duct tape is not a suitable repair. She needs to have her storm drain replaced was told this from when the 1st shovel went into the ground. She tried to have all this work done for free while the neighbor paid the bill. She was given a verbal estimate and was told to give the office a call if she wanted to have the work completed. She then filled suit against this neighbor our customer. No damage was done to the original house we excavated with a new sewer installed from the basement to the private sewer and she has had no water get in. Thank you for letting us respond with our side of the story

Billy and John are competant professionals who pay attention to their work and your requests. They pay attention to your instructions and concerns. These guys are smart - not boneheads! They are mostly punctual and responsive to phone calls. If they don't make it out the first day, they'll be there the next (if it's not an emergency). They take their time to make sure the job they've done is complete and correct - they don't just run away as soon as they've tightened the last connection. This is important, testing the work they've done to make sure it's good so they don't have to return the following day to correct simple mistakes. I've never had a problem with any of their work and I've hired them on roughly 4 separate jobs. They clean up the site after the job is done, they even cleaned up some debris left from a previous contractor without assking! Their prices are generally very good. I've rated them a "B" only because they might give you a very good price on a large, messy job, (removing and rerouting water line to a ceiling mounted radiator, $150) but then charge nearly $100 to service a boiler which was a very simple and quick job of simply tapping out the tubes under the boiler to remove dust... I think your best bet is to figure out any and all jobs you need done and try to get them done at once rather than piece-by-piece. You'll get a better overall price that way. I've used a few different plumbers, but I plan to stay with Hophan Bros. (pronounced hop-han). Good guys. Good attitudes. Good quality.
Description of Work: I've used Hophan Brothers for numerous jobs in my home. This report will cover all jobs averaged out. Jobs ranged from servicing the boilers to installing gas lines to removing and rerouting other plumbing lines and drains and radiators.

TWO PLUMBERS CAME TO DO THE JOB. THEY CLAIMED THAT WE NEEDED TO HAVE OUR LAUNDRY TUB REMOVED BECAUSE OF A PART THAT WAS RUSTED.
