Lawn and Yard Work, Landscaping, Lawn Fertilization & Treatment
About us
We are a small company that works in a site and client specific manner to create and maintain gardens and landscapes. Most of our projects are of small to medium residential scale. The "organic' in the name refers to our techniques and our overall approach. We do not use synthetic chemicals (unless there is no other way)in any of our services. When choosing plant materials we try to incorporate native, edible, locally grown or local nursery, functional and beautiful plants whenever possible. Octopus Organic Gardening currently has 3 subcontractors who work under the watchful eye of the owner on any site. Projects are bid on a time and materials or a project quote/bid basis depending on the situation. Most initial site visits are free of charge. We also offer a garden coaching program where we will work with you in your garden, or give a demonstration to you and your neighbors in your backyard. Fees for this are on a case by case basis.

Jeff was very easy to talk to about various options available to us for solving the water problem and the options available to us in deciding on the rain garden. Communication was usually by email or in person when he arrived to do the work. The work was done efficiently and usually as planned. Weather and some problems with his truck delayed some planned work. When a problem arose with a downspout not draining into the rain garden as anticipated, he corrected the problem within a few days. The rain garden is working as planned with the deluge of rain water draining into the rain garden area and dissipating into the ground, evidence that the preparation work he did to establish good drainage was done well. There is one more small adjustment that needs to be made since some rain water pools at one end of the garden and spills out, running down toward the driveway. Jeff plans to correct that shortly.
Description of Work: In April 2011, Jeff reestablished our front lawn and renewed the back lawn. The front lawn had been torn up by work required for a water line replacement. He graded the front lawn, removed lots and lots of stones and rocks that had been distributed there from the water line work, mixed compost into the soil, seeded it, and put straw on it. The back lawn had bare spots which he seeded and fertilized. He used an organic compost fertilizer on both lawns. The lawn came in beautifully and neighbors commented on how good it looked. In May we discussed with him a problem when we had heavy rains that some water seemed to be leaking into our basement. After our conversation, Jeff provided us with descriptions and estimates of several options. We chose the Rain Garden option. In August we hired him to install a Rain Garden in the front yard. Jeff described clearly what would be done. We discussed possible plants for the garden and a rearrangement of plants already in the area. He established the rain garden, moved established plants, and planted the new ones. He completed the initial work August 20, 2011. Some adjustments to downspouts and contours of the area have been needed and he has returned several times (at no additional cost) to see that the rain garden works as expected, which it definitely does.

Jeff came and we discussed what I was interested in having done, which included organic lawn treatment and mowing as well as weed control and pruning of bushes in gardens (small) and rehabilition of weed infested steep hillside. It was obvious we were on the same page as far as philosophy was concerned, and Jeff was to send me an estimate. He was, at that time, working for another company in addition to trying to build his own company. Unfortunately, he never gave me an estimate, and has not been in touch since. I did not try to chase him down, as I felt that it would probably be too difficult for him to work for another company and concentrate on his own business. I have been involved in small businesses for many years, and am aware of the difficulties of being a startup business without enough capital to support one's and/or one's families needs as well as buy equipment and supplies. I was disappointed, but such is life. Since I found Octupus Organic Gardening through an article in the Post Gazette, I suspect he was overwhelmed with responses. I wish him the best in his endeavor, but he's just not for me at this time.
Description of Work: Contact and visit to estimate costs and see if Jeff could work within my parameters.

I contacted Jeff after getting his name from a native plant person. He met with me to go over my ideas for making my garden/yard more 'wild' and natural and eliminating chemicals from upkeep of the gardens and lawn, and he offered ideas I liked. He was happy to have me work along with him, which I did when we set up time to do this. It was a good experience and he/we accomplished the goals for the day: transplanting a large holly bush and a hydrangea, and dividing/replanting multiple perennials and ferns to new homes in bare spaces. I have since purchased two trees and am anticipating Jeff planting them and making a new flower bed in a couple of weeks. I feel good about Jeff's work, relieved to find him, and plan to continue to work with him!
Description of Work: divided and transplanted perennials and a couple of older, large plants - later met at a local nursery to look at trees I was considering planting in the yard

Its great. Jeff had a great vision for the job and had the most creative and beautiful plan for the space. His plan was well executed and he was very prompt and very hard working. The final product is excellent.

Jeff was great. He listened to our complaints about mud under the porch and the ugly area at the back of the yard and quickly came up with a plan that we liked. He generated a bid quickly and was out within the week that we accepted to do the work. He and his coworker were friendly and communicative and spent a lot of time educating us about the new plants and how we should take care of them. I've had a really hard time finding a gardener that understands my desire to not put chemicals in my yard and am thrilled to have met Jeff. He also has a lawn care service that we are excited to try out in the fall.
Description of Work: Dug out, lined and mulched a medium size area of yard under the back porch. Cleaned up back of yard and dug out weeds. Transplanted four blueberry bushes and added two more to create blueberry hedge. Added ivy as ground cover, shade plants and planted new grass to extend lawn.
