Overall, a great experience, as it was a struggle just to find someone willing to come out.
Description of Work: Requested estimate for repair and replacement of wood trim / siding on a potential new home purchase. Maintained excellent communications throughout process. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for a hardworking contractor.

Fast forward to January '08. We are selling our home and the box gutters are leaking again. We received an offer on the home and after the inspection shows the box gutter leakage, the buyers call a contractor. The buyers call KC Contracting to look into the leaky gutters. John tells the buyers that yes, he remembered the house. He also remembered telling us (he didn't) that we needed a new roof and telling us that it would cost 20 thousand dollars. There are 2 problems with this: 1) We did not need a new roof, not then and not now. We had 3 (three) other roofers actually go out onto the roof after this claim and they said the roof was fine and would last for many more years. The box gutters again were the culprit and we have since patched all holes, sealed all seams and repainted (5yr warranty, $350), which fixed all leaks. John only looked through binoculars from the street last summer. 2) Our roof is not that big, and each of the other roofers (all on Angie's List with good scores) said even if we did need a new roof, which we didn't, it would be around 6K. End result of all of this: The potential buyers were very upset that we knew about a problem with the roof and did not put it on the seller's disclosure (we didn't know of any issues). They even threatened with some legal action because not disclosing a known issue is a crime. We tried to explain the situation but at that time they were sure we were liars and backed out of the sale. On a call with John, he recalled having called and given me the news and estimate because "I usually do." In defense of my memory, a 20K update to a home is not something you easily forget. Now our home is tainted with a lie and still for sale. F's all around. Services were performed by this company, so the option was marked appropriately on this report. A service is work, and work was done, it just happened to be work against us.
Description of Work: Last summer, I requested an estimate for the repair of a leak coming from the gutters. I never heard back from KC Contracting (John), after hearing that John would take a look, and ended up having our general contractor address the issue. It turned out that a seal in our box gutters popped. It was sealed and the leak stopped. GC said there was no problem with the roof.

YES, I WAS AT THAT HOUSE TWICE. THE FIRST TIME WAS FOR A LEAKY GUTTER AND A ROOF ESTIMATE WHICH IN MY FILES STATES COST WOULD BE AROUND $7000. THE GUESSTIMATE I TOLD THE REAL ESTATE PEOPLE FOR $20000 INCLUDED, WHICH THE MEMBER DOES NOT STATE, REPLACING GARAGE ROOF, WOOD REPAIR ON BACK OF GARAGE ROOF, WHICH WAS REPORTED IN INSPECTION, BACK PORCH REPAIR, WALL REPAIR, WATER DIVERSION, GUTTER REPAIR AND NEW MAIN ROOF AMONG OTHER THINGS ALL STATED IN REPORT PLUMBING=ELEC ETC., NOT JUST SOLELY THE MAIN ROOF. THIS WAS ONLY A APPROXIMATE NUMBER. SOUNDS LIKE A MISCOMMUNICATION TO ME. SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION AND MISTRUST. MY REPORT WAS NOT MEANT TO HARM YOU OR ANYONE ELSE. JOHN KINDLER

Called John to get estimate to replace deck. He came the very next day and less than a week later, his crew was at my home doing demolition on the old deck. His crew came daily at 7 AM and worked to 3 PM, every day! It was such a good experience, it only took 4 1/2 days to complete. VERY HONEST, truthful, has great work ethic and VERY trustworthy. Also, I like the quality of work performed. It was so refreshing to find someone that was not out to rip you off and did the quality of work for the pay they received. EVERYONE stop looking for other contractors and hire this company! EXCELLENT JOB! I will refer this company to everyone I come in contact with.
Description of Work: Replaced deck, removed the old deck (only took 2 hours). Built deck 36x9, used 2x10 house band board and outer band, 2x8 floor joisted, steps to front and rear of deck, dug 6x6 support dug 36" fill with two bags of concrete, all wood was lagged and screwed around to local codes. 4x4 post used to support 8 sections of fencing along south side of deck, 2x6 top rail on the other part of deck.

Everything went very well. The deck looks fantastic! Well constructed with terrific attention to detail. My tenants are thrilled and can't wait to break out the grill and lounge chairs.
Description of Work: John built a 12' by 30' deck behind behind an apartment building that I own in Pittsburgh's Regent Square area. The other supposedly "affordable" contractor that I asked to bid on the job proposed a deck that was a little more affordable, but it wasn't as big as the deck I received from KC Contracting and the other contractor's drawings placed the deck at the opposite end of the yard; not where I wanted it. I like it when a contractor pays attention to what I'm asking for and John did that.

The job went very well. He came on New Years day to give us the estimate. Started when he said. Stuck to his estimate despite a few add ons on our part and some unexpected plumbing complications. He let us buy the materials ourselves on home depot cards that we had. There was no mark up for supplies. His helpers are very nice and good with our kids. He always calls if they are going to be late or miss a day. Took a little longer than expected because he had some personal matters to attend to, but he gave us heads up right away. He pays incredible attention to detail. Our windows had antique hardware that was painted over. He removed the hardware, stripped the paint and refurbished it. All other painters we have had just painted over the hardware to save time. He is an expert painter. Not a single flaw. Walls are perfectly smooth. I could sit in bathroom all day and look at the walls. Wish I picked John Kindler to paint our kitchen that a supposed expert painter screwed up.
Description of Work: Full remodel of a downstairs powder room. Walls were removed down to the studs. New tile floor, custom storage area built, ran new electric for lighting, new toilet and wall mount sink, custom molding added to match existing molding, repainted. Price does not include plumbing and price of toilet and sink.

I hired KC contracting because they had a great rep. on Angie's list and John Kindler offered to match my best quote for the job. When I asked about materials, John told me to check out a few places but didn't seem worried about getting materials. When it came time to do the job, none of the materials that we originally wanted to use were available. We were told that 30 year shingles were a special order item, as was the vinyl siding that we chose. The siding was a real disappointment. Once the job was finished, the work done was great. Our house looks really nice. Unfortunately, I had several issues with the professionalism of John's crew. One issue we had was that ladder jacks were placed with their legs going through young plants, killing the plants. The crew also took drinks from our fridge and left them opened, with liquid still in them, in various places in our garage. They left an opened pack of Dayquil in the garage (I have kids) and they even used my wood without telling me.
Description of Work: Remove old shingles and re-shingle the roof. Remove and replace gutters. Remove and replace siding.

Originally, John was not able to schedule us until 2008. However, due to a cancellation, our roof was completed by Thanksgiving. John and his crew arrived on the agreed date and time, cleaned up each day, and finished the roof as expected. John was always available to answer questions, and we expect to hire him again in the future for some remodeling projects.
Description of Work: Removed upper roof and garage roof, hauled away debris, applied ice and water shield on bottom roofs and up all valleys, applied felt paper, installed all new vinyl pipe boots, re-flashed chimney, applied Alcoa drip edge up all rakes, applied flint-lastic base and 1 layer cap sheet on upper flat roof, installed asphalt shingles, installed sure vent along ridge, capped all hip and ridge with matching shingles.

John and his crew did an absolutely excellent job. They arrived every day by 7:30 am (8 days in a row) until the job was completed. We were impressed by their punctuality, attention to detail, and overall work ethic. It was obvious that each man took pride in his work and this was reflected in the final result. There were at least two men working each day and up to six on the days when the back porch was being rebuilt. Even our neighbors commented on how conscientious and considerate his crew was to them as well. At the end of the job everything was cleaned up beautifully and all trash, etc. removed. Given the quality of the work, we consider the price to be well worth it and give John and his company our thanks and our highest recommendations.
Description of Work: The job involved prepping and painting a 3-story stucco house. All stucco surfaces were scraped, patched as needed, and painted. All wood trim was also scraped and painted. A wooden porch at the rear of the house was entirely rebuilt including the stairs down to the backyard.

John Kindler's team did a great job in replacing my roof. They showed up on time as promised and were very efficient with their work. They also cleaned up after each day's work. I would highly recommend this firm if you are looking for a quality roof replacement.
Description of Work: Work involved complete removal of previous roof and the replacement of felt and shingles on the roof. Also included new installation of 2 roof vents which were not on the previous roof. Ice shields and drip lines were also included. My roof job was rather complex since I have a Cape Cod style home with dormers and numerous slopes.

Workers arrived promptly at 7:00 a.m. and worked through the heat until late afternoon. Took 3-1/2 days for the job, which was exactly what John Kindler had estimated. Price was about $125 higher than estimate because of bathroom vent problem and also some bad wood needed replaced. That was to be expected, as the contract stated that replaced wood would increase cost, and bath vent was not included in original estimate.
Description of Work: New roof installed, along with ridge vent. New gutter and downspout in front of house, and new downspout in back of house. Two years ago, when I had a sunroom installed, the installers could not work the bathroom vent out of the roof. KC Contracting was able to find this vent and reposition it to once again vent outside.

Responded promptly to my call, came for an estimate when he said. He provided an estimate in a few days which I accepted. When I called to accept there was some problem with the amount of work and he asked to come back out and re-estimate to which I agreed. That resulted in $1500 increase from $12500 to $14000. I agreed to the revised estimate as the estimate was in the range of others and John has a good rep here on the list. As with any outdoor construction, scheduling is difficult but John got me in within a couple of months and called a week or so before they showed up with a crew of 6. They made quick work of removal of the old roof and discovered that the old roof s sheeting was too thin (I suspected this) and the best thing would be to add a layer of sheeting for another $2800. We agreed and that went well. I am very happy with the job and the cleanup. I have already recommended him to a neighbor.
Description of Work: Complete shingle replacement of large roof with multiple dormers. During removal of old roof, found additional sheeting was required for a stable strong roof.

The project from beginning to end was fantastic. Bill came out a few days before the work was to begin just to ask some last minute questions. He started on a Wed and was finished on Friday. Before Bill arrived, my neighbor called to have her walk and steps completed as well, and this was accomadated. This is the 2nd time that I have used KC Contracting, the previous time was to build a deck.
Description of Work: KC Contracting poured an new walkway and built 3 new steps into my townhome. The work involved demolition of the previous material as well. The steps were half cirle with the bottom step being 10 feet across and 5 feet from the door. I believe that there was more work involved than Bill anticipated, but none the less, the project was completed on time.

I began in June getting estimates for the porch roof on my half of a duplex; John called to schedule an estimate & came out right away, but by the time I decided who to hire & called him back he was booked. He said to call back in a couple weeks. But before I was able to call again in August he called me, was able to reschedule another small job in between big jobs, & fit me in with my schedule! The crew worked fast, was courteous, and cleaned up so well I wouldn't have even known they were there. John got them started & left, but inspected the work at end of the day & finished up a few things. He answered all my questions, I was very comfortable with his demeanor & professionalism. Nothing unexpected came up, and my leak doesn't anymore!
Description of Work: Roof over front porch/sunroom: Rip off 1/2 front porch shingles & haul away debris; apply ice & water shield along perimeter; apply 30# felt paper; reflush all where roof meets house; make divider to split common roofs; custom make drip edge; apply 30 yr GAF 3 tab asphalt shingles. Price included all material & labor, proper cleanup & 10 year on all labor. (Any wood to be replaced would have been extra.)

John is hard-working, responsive, efficient, knowledgeable, polite, and patient. 1. John returned my calls promptly and followed up with status reports. 2. He matched 2 lower bids and still provided high-quality work with better materials. 3. John fit us in between jobs so we could have the roof finished as soon as possible (a requirement for our home owner's insurance). 3. He took the time to answer all of my questions and explain the benefits of the materials we chose. 4. After the job was complete, John came back for a final inspection and personally cleaned up the house. 5. John helped with home repairs unrelated to the work he was paid for. John may quote his work slightly higher than other contractors but his quality of service and expertise are well-worth the price.
Description of Work: John Kindler installed a new roof on our single story ranch house (800 sq. feet). He removed 2 layers of old shingles, gave us higher-quality harbor blue, architectural shingles, added ridge vents, new flashing on the chimney, drip guards for the gutters, installed a fan in the bathroom, and routed the fan vent up through the roof.

John and his crew did a great job. The new roofs look great and they shored up some problems they found once the old shingles were removed. John always had options for what needed to be done and did not try to pressure us into choosing a more expensive option. I was on the fence before the work started about getting a new deck, but knew I needed it once the old roof came off (It was unstable). John was very reasonable in pricing it and has taken great care to make sure it's done correctly, which is no easy task considering the old house isn't exactly square. His crew is polite and hard-working and doesn't leave a lot of mess behind. He's an honest, trustworthy contractor who I would recommend to anyone needing roof or deck work done. The original roof work came in slightly higher than the original estimate, but there also was work to be done that could only be identified once the shingles came off.
Description of Work: I needed part of the main roof and the front porch roof re-shingled and rehabbed. I also had to have an old back porch removed from the existing deck and covered with a new roof. In the process, I also ended up getting the deck replaced.

When we'd completed the purchase of the house several weeks later I contacted John again to see if his estimate still stood. He said it would, but that he needed to actually visit the site to double check. Fair enough... However we were floored when his estimate then came in higher than any others, nearly double his original estimate. The true deciding factor in going with a different contractor wasn't just price - it was that he tried to convince me that my roof was 30 square! It is in fact 17 square, including the porches. KC Contracting has a lot of good reviews on Angie's List, so I was very surprised to find our experience so different. Perhaps John was having an "off" day - or perhaps he just didn't want the job at the time so priced himself out. I'm not sure. Though he was very polite while here and advised us to obtain other estimates.
Description of Work: I contacted John for an estimate to remove a single layer of roofing and replace it with new asphalt shingles on a home we were considering buying. I gave him the dimensions of the house and a photo (available online at Allegheny Tax Assessor site). I got the impression speaking with John on the phone that he had actually visited the house when he gave me an estimate of $4800 dollars.

Excellent. The crew was on-time, polite, and cleaned up when they were finished. John called me several times to keep me up-to-date on the project. John was to arrive at 10:00 for an estimate. He was about 1/2 hour early which to me was a good sign. The estimate was prompt and much less than others received. When asked how long the project would take, I was told about 5 days with one person. Bill got it done in 3. There was a problem with the material delivery (Home Depot did not show up on day scheduled. This was not John's fault). John couldn't have been more apologetic and had the delivery there within 2 hours. Bill came out the day before the project was to start to get some last minute details taken care of. Each day when I came home, we were surprised to see the progress each day. The final product looks great. The cleanup was so thorough, that you can't tell there was someone working. KC Contracting will probably have 2 more decks in my neighborhood and we have had some preliminary discussion about finishing the basement in the future.

It was a pleasure to work with John. He was always available by phone and returned calls. He showed up at the time he said he would. Most importantly he remained on site until the job was completed; to our satisfaction. He also did the roof on another building which was in bad shape until John fixed it; no small feat; again to our satisfaction. John Kindler is a rare example of an old fashioned craftsman; talented, professional and honest. I would not hesitate to recommend him, in fact, my neighbor was left with an uncompleted repair job and a real mess when a so called carpenter took their money and absconded. John and his crew completed the job much to the relief of my neighbors who live out of state.
