I thought there was a leak on the roof and I called him and he came out immediately. He found that the drain pipe was jammed, so he fixed it. He did not ask me for money, but I gave him money because he was so responsive. He was professional, friendly and punctual. I will have to hire him again because I have a bird nesting on my roof.

They haven?t come out for the job yet. They were very thorough with their inspection. He went above and beyond to check and inspect each and everything. If his work is anything like the experience we had so far then it is going to be good. He called before he showed up and was on time. He was very professional.

We could not be happier; both with John Kindler and his crew and the new roof! John came out in November and gave us an estimate for roof replacement. He was upfront about the job most likely waiting until the spring and we decided to wait and have John do the job based on his competitive bid and the fact that I just really liked him when we met - the guy just oozes genuine kindness. He called and we scheduled the job for March 9th. The morning the work started John came in and explained to me what I should expect, had me pick out shingles, and put my mind at ease. I really appreciated that small gesture. It took the crew 1 day to remove the old roof and 2 days to put the new roof on. The crew that John has working for him totally blew us away. They were professional, courteous, well mannered...they were clearly there to work and cared that they did the job right keeping our needs in mind. They cleaned up every day. You never would have known we were having roofing done. They ran the shop vac on the driveway, porch and all places in between. No signs of debris - anywhere - every day. Trustworthy - left them access to the basement when we were at work with no issues. And perhaps what impressed me most was that we offered the crew a cash tip and they graciously declined, making it clear they were not to accept tips. When we told them we would just give it to John to disperse, they laughed and said no way, john won't take it. They clearly respected John's wishes; the guys could have taken the cash and no one would have known but they didn't - that is integrity.

The representative was punctual and had a professional manner. The bid was for a new roof and the problem that I had is that he would not give a written estimate for the work to be done, products he would use, etc. He said that he would do that if and when he got the job. I asked him how would I be able to compare bids if I did not know what the bid was for. He said to call him if I considered other bids and he would explain. I did not call him back. The bid that he gave was almost $4000 more than the next highest bid.

One major problem I had was the result of a mistake by the subs, the subcontractor that was doing the wall and concrete work. After the deck was finished they were digging out for a retaining wall below the deck and bumped the deck with their digger. Before the work was started, I questioned the decision to do the deck before the retaining wall, but John felt that it wouldn't be a problem. I think the decision to do the deck first was based on scheduling rather than what was the best order to do things in. Fortunately, it was only one board on the collar beam that was damaged, and there was no major structural damage to the deck. John said he would be out as soon as the concrete work was finished to replace the board. The deal was that I would pay my final payment of $5850 after all of the work (deck, concrete, and walls) was completed. John wanted me to give him the payment before the deck was repaired, and I argued that the job was not considered complete until the deck was fixed. He was upset that I was withholding $5850, but I was just staying true to the contract, which stated that $5850 was due when the work was complete, which in my opinion it was not. I compromised and gave him $5000 and withheld $850 until the deck was repaired the following week. For more information about the deck damage, including a picture, please see my review of the subcontractors. Another problem was that the nails immediately rusted out on the first 4 rows of deck boards. It turned out that their nail gun was not loaded with galvanized nails when they started. So, several boards needed to be replaced. Those boards needed to be removed to fix the damage to the collar beam anyway, so all of those repairs were done at the same time. There were also a ton of places where they did not nail the deck boards to the joists. I would say they missed about 5% of them. They also fixed this when they came to repair the other problems. There is one board in particular on the deck that is extremetly warped. I would have thrown it out. I mentioned it, but I didn't really press the issue because I didn't feel it was worth arguing about. Another disappointment was that when he initially quoted me the $8000 I thought it included the small section of fence below the deck. Then I asked him before he started and he said he forgot about it, but would "work with me" on the price. I kept asking how much he thought it would be, but he never really gave me an answer, and then at the end he said it would be $800, which I thought was a bit much. But I consider that to be my own fault for not putting more pressure on him for a price before I let him do it. To make matters worse, I re-did all of the pickets anyway. Since the patio was done after the fence, the pickets did not come down to the patio, defeating the purpose of having the yard enclosed. I would have given a B on quality, but they did fix the things that I really complained about.
Description of Work: K.C. Contracting removed a small existing deck that was falling apart and replaced it with a 12' x 20' raised wooden deck and also installed a small section of fence below the deck, along my driveway. I asked for the fence because the old deck had a similar fence below it that allowed my entire yard to be enclosed, and I wanted something new that would serve the same purpose. First, the old deck was torn down and hauled away. Four post holes were dug and four 6x6 posts were cemented in place. A band board was installed on the house, and a collar beam was built across the support posts. Joists were installed on joist hangers along the band board, and screwed to the collar beam on the other end. Then the deck boards were laid using nails and a railing was installed around the entire perimeter of the deck. About 7 steps were created to allow access to and from the yard. (Even though the deck is 1 story high, the yard is raised along one side, allowing a small number of steps). Then a fence with a gate was created along the bottom, also with support posts that were cemented in place. It should also be noted that I had a concrete patio and driveway installed as well as two Versa-Lok retaining walls. K.C. Contracting subcontracted the concrete and wall work. So K.C. Contracting handled the payments but subcontractors did the concrete and wall work. I reviewed subs work separately, so feel free to search for their review if you are interested in the concrete and wall work. I did all of the staining myself, and I also re-did the pickets on the fence that they made. In the end I am pleased with the overall quality of the deck, and the work was done in a timely fashion. It took only a week for the deck and the fence. John Kindler, who runs K.C. Contracting, was on the job every day, without working on multiple jobs at once. Anytime I would call he would either answer or call back immediately and was never in a hurry to get me off the phone.

I needed nothing fancy - just a landing and steps to replace the steep dangerous steps leading to my back door. After receiving several estimates I went with KC Contracting because John had the best design solution, allowing the steps to run parallel to the back of the house rather than sticking out. I did have to wait quite a while before construction began. However, I knew that this is a busy time and was in no hurry. While I was waiting, John always responded promptly to calls and emails. And when he was free to start construction, the crew showed up exactly when he said they would and worked straight through until the job was finished. Because of the layout of the house, he had to make the deck 7 feet wide instead of 6 feet as originally planned. The cost of additional materials added $100 to the original quote. However, it was SO worth it. The finished deck is beautiful. The extra foot even gives me enough room to put in a small table. John and his crew paid attention to details, worked quickly without sacrificing quality. They also cleaned up after each day of work (removing the fallen leaves from my patio in the process!). I plan on contacting him for additional projects next year.

In January 2008 I found myself with an attic mold problem. The interior of the attic was covered with black mold, and in many places the nails holding the shingles in place were starting to loosen from the plywood. In severely cold weather, there was frost on the interior plywood of the roof, and on the trusses. Not what you would expect for a 7.5 year old roof installed by Burns & Scalo in July 2000 (with 40-yr shingles!). As luck would have it, the warranty on the roof expired after 5 years, so Burns & Scalo refused to take responsibility for it. They had installed a ridge vent and power fan in the new roof, but HAD NOT closed off the gable vents. So we had air & moisture coming in the gable vents and going out the ridge vent. Not an effective way to vent a roof, as the areas along the perimeter of the roof were never receiving any ventilation. You can read my review of Burns & Scalo for further info. John Kindler, owner of K C Contracting went out of his way to help me fix the roof and attic mold. He put me in touch with a very reputable company from eastern PA that specializes in mold removal (Grangeville Environmental Services). I ended up hiring them based on a very favorable review by one of John Kindler's other customers. Once the attic mold was treated, John & his crew of friendly roofers had the roof replaced in about 2 days. They installed a new product called SmartVent along the perimeter of the roof. They showed up on time, worked steadily, cleaned up thoroughly (except for the attic floor, which got a lot of debris on it after the SmartVent was installed. I ended up having to lug the shop vac up to attic and vacuum it myself), and were very friendly and courteous. John was VERY good about returning phone calls. John Kindler, the owner of K C Contracting, returned my calls promptly and went out of his way to help identif

John Kindler and the crew from K C Contracting were professional, efficient, and made the process of replacing our roof as painless as possible. From the initial meeting (estimate) with John, I had confidence in his ability to do the job right the first time and I believe that confidence was well earned. The new roof looks great and our yard bears few scars from the experience. In fact, they did an excellent job in clearing away the debris. I feel it's important to note that the entire process was completed on the schedule laid out by John Kindler at the outset. Not only did he make an estimate visit within days of my initial call, work began within the time frame "guesstimated" at that visit - and was finished in nearly the exact time he stated was needed for completion. This, with a large roof and a day lost due to rain. In 11 years of home ownership, I have had more negative experience with home repair professionals and contractors, than positive ones. K C Contracting is a rare exception. The overall experience was excellent, far above the average in every respect. I will not hesitate to call John Kindler for future projects and will be pleased to recommend K C Contracting to friends and family.
Description of Work: They removed old shingles/roofing; repaired/replaced faulty boards; trimmed any tree branches in contact with roof; repaired/replaced wood in dis-repair around chimney box; installed new architectural shingles, ridge vents, water and ice shield in roof valleys, drip edges and new flashing around the chimney. They also hauled away all debris.

A dreaded and postponed experience was made painless. Two days after callings, John came to give me an estimate. After accepting his estimate, he said work would begin around the end of August(two month wait), but work began the second week of August. The crew was prompt and very organized. They all seemed to know what they were doing. The crew was very polite. Cleanup was extremely thorough. They also shingled my father's house and he is very satisfied.

Description of Work: They took off the old porch and roof, and replaced it with a deck and roof about 3 times larger. They showed up every day by 7:00AM, worked steadily, cleaned up every day and left the yard even neater than it was before they arrived. The whole job took about a week and the materials used and craftsmanship were excellent! Ours is now the nicest deck on the block. Came to do an estimate promptly. Came very promptly to fix a leak that developed AFTER getting two estimates. (Came even though we had not yet decided on a roofer, and he knew that). Came back promptly when his initial repair of the leak didn't work, and he covered the area with a tarp until he could do the whole job. Started the job a few weeks later than he said, but when we called, he started the job the following week. Took two weeks to do job (which he estimated at 5-7 days). Cleaned up very well at the end of each day. Said he had mentioned having had to replace some wood during the job (he hadn't mentioned it). Pleasant, helpful crew. Quality of work seems quite good. Under-"guesstimated" cost of gutters and downspouts by $500.

We contacted K C Contracting to give us a bid for a new roof. on our 20 x20 garage. John came when scheduled to look over the job and gave us a bid within a week. He was the lowest bidder. John called a week before to schedule the work. He arrived on time the day he scheduled with his crew. They started the job at 8:00 am and were finished by 2:00PM the same day. They cleaned up after the job was finished and hauled the old shingles away. We would highly recommend KC Contracting.
