If you are questioning the low marks given by some people for this company, please read my full review because I had expensive work completed (not just an estimate) and I experienced some worries related to those complaints, but those worries were unfounded and I was 100% satisfied at the end of the process. I called for my first estimate on a roof replacement before I even purchased our house to see if it was in our price range to repair. John had someone come out to look at the roof and provided a ball park estimate for me within 24 hours, knowing that I was only a potential buyer. He did not have to take the time to help someone who might not even buy the house, but he did. Because of his helpfulness, I called him for a detailed estimate a few months after our purchase, and he was able to come out within a few days. Several contractors I called never returned my messages requesting an estimate at all (even after second messages were left...apparently this is a common problem). John was not as smooth a salesman as another contractor I spoke to, but I've had some bad experiences with smooth talkers, so I decided John was more trustworthy. My original verbal estimate was given in January and I told John that we were looking to have the roof done in the spring sometime. I did not get a written estimate emailed to me, so I called a few months later and John promptly called me back. He got that estimate sent out within just a few days. (Note that some reviewers complain about not getting their estimates...all they needed to do was place a quick phone call). As spring approached, I did not hear from John and worried that he may have forgotten me. I called in late March and he said they were swamped from the Feb. snow damage and had a few other jobs on their list to finish. He expressed that they would get out here soon, but I said we didn't need to rush because we were waiting on our tax credit to come in anyway. Our roof wasn't leaking and we could wait, so I left it that he would just call me when he was ready. Although I knew I told him I was in no hurry, I began to worry again when June ended and he hadn't contacted me. Since roofers book way in advance, my worry prompted me to start the process of considering the other contractors when John called me the second week of July to schedule the job in two days. I tell this part of the story because I've noticed some reviewers complain that he doesn't get back to people. I believe this is just because they are so busy, it's not because he has forgotten or doesn't want the job. Just be patient and call again if you need to. Anyway, his guys showed up early Monday morning and had finished my very difficult roof in 7 working days (and one of those was a rain day where they were unable to work). I was not 100% sure of my shingle or gutter color choice when they arrived the first morning to start the job. John was quite patient with my indecisiveness and was helpful in the process. A lot of men aren't so patient with indecisive women. As the guys started the job, my dad recommended installing a ventilation fan. I called John and it was no problem to add that on and he was much more than fair on the installation price. If there was any question about additional things needing done, the guys always asked me first. They asked if I wanted them to call someone to repoint the chimney before they did the flashing (I declined but kind of wish I hadn't). They showed me how the chimney flashing looked before they sealed it and gave me two options for how they could cover the previous mess. I just can't say enough about how careful they were to not do things I didn't request, and to make sure I was happy with what they did. The guys never took off their shirts or played loud music. They were nice to my kids and they worked hard. As far as we can tell, they did a very good job on the roof. It's impossible to know if there are any goofs that will show in the future, but my dad worked for a house builder in his younger days and he felt they did a nice job. Since the completion, I've paid attention to other roof jobs and I can see where mine looks really good in comparison. An example is that John's guys hide the flashing down the valleys by layering the shingles on top. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you look at roofs where the valleys show the flashing, it looks a lot sloppier. Also, my chimney flashing had originally looked really horrible and the tar had been very sloppily applied. They did a great job covering the previous mess and made it look 100 times better. I also left the house almost every day to run errands and I left my door unlocked so they could get into the attic or use the bathroom. I felt I could trust the guys and they gave me no reason to believe I made a mistake by doing so. When the guys finished the job, they were unhappy with one of their downspouts. They pointed it out to us and told us they would come back to replace it. They did come back two weeks later and replaced it as promised. Another review mentioned John being vague about pricing. I did have this experience regarding extra shingles I had ordered for my garage, but I believe it's because he didn't have paperwork in front of him with the "locked in" price I had gotten over the winter. When I questioned the exact price in March and then when they started the job, I got more of a vague figure that wasn't the same. This caused me concern, especially at the end when we determined how many more bundles I would need and I still didn't have an exact figure. HOWEVER, the end result was the original low figure he had given me and I will say that it was a very fair price (and I knew what Home Depot's prices were as a comparison). I do believe that John is honest and is not a scammer in his pricing. John also stuck to his original estimate and did not add any charges beyond what I had requested (the fan and extra ice guard). Expensive jobs like this require a lot of trust because a homeowner has no idea of the material costs or how difficult the labor will be. It's hard to trust people when you hear about so many scammers or when you've had previous bad experiences. I believe the negative reviews are a result of that mistrust and the assumption that John is like the many unqualified and unmotivated contractors out there. I really believe that John is trustworthy and he cares about his reputation. I felt his employees were good guys who did good work. I think you will be as satisfied as I am if you end up choosing John Kindler as your contractor.
Description of Work: Needed shingles completely replaced on a two-story 100 year old house (with a very steep roof). They tore off originals and replaced asphalt shingles, flashing, and gutters. Also installed an attic ventilation fan.

John came out to the house very quickly and provided a written estimate that I could provide my insurance company. Working with my insurance company (Allstate) turned out to be a nightmare but John talked to a number of people at Allstate and helped me get resolution on the claim. I asked that the deck be completed by July 4th, as I was having overnight guests for the holiday weekend. The deck completed on Wed and looks great. The crew showed up on time everyday and even worked on Saturaday to ensure they met the deadline. Everyone was friendly and professional. Thanks for everything!
Description of Work: A tree fell and landed on my elevated deck and John replaced it. He worked with me to redesign the deck and add steps to make it more functional.

Came quickly to fix a hole created by a storm last winter, despite calls from all over since we'd been hit with 3 feet of March snow, pulling off a gutter and the wood it had been attached to. Patched the hole immediately and weather proofed it. Later returned to measure for replacement, installed new gutter sections. Friendly, helpful, didn't push more expensive repairs and complete replacement.
Description of Work: temporarily patched storm damage hole, later replaced wood, siding, and gutter.

John came by our house and provided us with a written estimate within a week of calling. I appreciated that we did not need to be present during John's inspection. The quoted price was a bit higher than 2 other estimates from other contractors / roofers, but we decided to go with K C Contracting because it had higher Angie's List ratings. John had a crew come by within 3 weeks of agreeing to the estimate, which I feel was very quick due to the high volume of gutter repairs throughout Allegheney County. John ordered the new gutters and had them dropped off in my yard. He had a crew come by to install within 3 days of having the gutters dropped off. The crew had old gutters removed and new ones installed within 2 days and did an excellent job cleaning up. It rained 2 days after gutter installation and I noticed leaks coming from 2 places, 1 in the front and 1 in the rear of our house. I called John and informed him of the problem and he had a crew at my place to fix the leaks the next day, which alleviated my concern. Gutters working very well (as expected) and look great!

We are very pleased with the quality of KC Contracting's work. When work began the morning after Memorial Day, John and his crew were very punctual arriving every morning of the 5 and 1/2 day project before 7am. Each member of the crew was courteous, friendly and knowledgeable, answering all of our questions in a friendly manner. Even during demolition the first day, the crew always maintained a clean construction site. The only issue of concern for us was that it took quite awhile to start the project. We were hoping to begin the work 3 weeks after we agreed to do the project in the first week of April. Work did not begin until the first week of June, possibly due to weather delays.
Description of Work: J C Contracting demolished our old front porch (250 square feet) and replaced it with 250 square feet tongue and groove wooden front porch including new steps, railings, handrails and lattice. The work included raising the level of the porch which led to one additional step. The work was done in the timeframe quoted (5-7 days) and at the price quoted.

We feel like we may have gotten taken by KC Contracting, which is surprising given all the good reviews on Angie's List. We had them to our house in February to clear ice from the gutters and didn't get a great feeling about them because John kept changing the price on us. This time, we had a written estimate in advance (quoting $2100) but didn't notice until the night before they started the job that it said they would repair both the east and west sides of the house. We'd only had problems on the west side so we only wanted to repair that side. The morning they started the job, my husband called John to let him know that we only wanted to do one side of the house, assuming then that the price would drop to approximately $1050. The work took about a day and a half to complete. Near the end of the first day, John called my husband to say that they needed to replace the flashing around the chimney. This surprised us because we had that done by Hoolahan (another highly rated roofing company) just two years earlier. Unfortunately, we have a three-story house so all we could do was take John's word for it - we couldn't possibly get up on the roof to see for ourselves. After the job was complete, John called my husband with the final price: $1900. We were very surprised because it was almost the full quoted amount when we'd only had 55-60% of the work done. Then John said that they repaired a hole on the east side of the house (even though we told them we didn't want them to do anything on that side of the house). And we wondered why John didn't call us when the hole was found and ask if we wanted it done, rather than doing the work and telling us after the fact. Fortunately, we found an Angie's List coupon giving us 10% off so we only paid $1710 for the job. We're not sure if we really got what we paid for, though. Since then, I've shared this story with a few friends and one of them told me that her roofer carries a video camera so he can show his clients the damage to their roofs. Next time we need roofing work done, we'll be sure to hire a company that uses a video camera.
Description of Work: We hired KC Contracting to repair soffit and fascia board, install ice/water shield and re-shingle, patch gutters, and replace a segment of our downspout - all on the west side of our house. All damage was due to the big snowstorms in February and we'd had KC Contracting out at that time to clear ice from the gutters because we had water running down the insides of our walls.

Overall things went very well. I had contacted several contractors about replacing gutters, which were in poor condition after this year's ice. Many were so busy I had a hard time communicating with them, but John kept in touch and was good to work with. The contractors were nice and left almost no trace after the job. I've noticed one corner joint that seems to leak, but it's not even worth a return trip by them I think. I may use them again when the roof needs to be replaced.

After calling three contractors John Kindler of K C Contracting was the only contractor to return my calls. This was fortunate for me because I couldn't have asked for better service. He was polite, prompt, and down-to-earth. John gave me an estimate within one week of my call and the job was completed shortly thereafter. His original estimate was the same as the final price. The quality of the work was excellent, they were respectful of my property, and there are no problems after a couple of storms.

John Kindler came to our home within 24 hours of my initial inquiry. He spent over an hour inspecting our roof and attic and going over his recommendations with us. He called later that evening with his estimate and subsequently emailed us a detailed proposal / contract. His contract included a discount for having found him on Angie's List as well as a 10 year guarantee on his work. He also promised that he could complete the project within 4 weeks. His estimate was higher than some of the others we received, however, his attention to detail and his professionalism during the proposal period, combined with a guarantee on his work, tipped the scales in his favor. We definitely made the right call! Before work started, Mr Kindler offered to bring sample shingles to our home, however, we had seen a new line of Owens Corning shingles on the internet that we were interested in using. Mr. Kindler contacted the manufacturer and obtained sample boards of these particular shingles so that we could see them in person and make an informed decision on them. Work started on our roof a few weeks later and Mr. Kindler's crew was amazing. They arrived promptly at 7am each morning, worked hard all day, cleaned up at the end of each day, and were polite and professional. They were extremely careful to also check our neighbor's yard for debris at the end of each day. Unfortunately, some debris did wipe out a small japanese maple in our front yard, but the foreman of the crew showed up with a beautiful new tree the very next day! They completed the project in 3 days and the result is a georgeous roof that now adds character to our home. The day the crew finished, I mowed the lawn and didn't kick up a single roofing nail or piece of debris. We would definitely hire KC Contracting again!
Description of Work: Tore off old roof, including all plywood, as well as demo all gutters and downspouts. Installed all new 5/8 plywood, ice guard, 30# felt paper, new pipe boots, ridge vent, new flashings, 30 year shingles, new gutters and downspouts.

Project never got beyond the proposal stage.
Description of Work: If you are prepared to accept KC Contracting proposal without Buyer question/comment regarding construction details and without evidence of liability insurance or workers compensation then KC is obviously someone to deal with based on the overwhelming favorable ratings received. However if you want input to their proposal to establish a solid basis for a contract without potential conflict/misunderstandings then it might be prudent to look elsewhere. I believe KC interpreted my input/questions as a sign of being difficult to work with, as opposed to someone only wanting a clearly enumerated proposal. In essence KC said they had no interest in my money even though my response to any concern was that I would pay to get the end result I wanted. KC did spend over an hour researching a component other than proposed and in consideration my offer to increase the quoted price accordingly was declined. All dealings were professional and courteous even though we could not come to terms.

KC was punctual, and performed work quickly once the job was started. They seem to have done a quality job. They even disposed of extra winter storm damage which was not part of the actual job. I appreciated this. They cleaned up well after themselves. Considering their workload from this past winter's damage, they completed the work in a fairly good window of time.

Start to finish everything went well. They tried to minimize the mess from the ceiling coming down and cleaned up at the end of the job. They placed the chair rail at the appropriate height since it wasn't before. John was on the job a few times and came back after his crew was finished to inspect everything. We painted and the room looks great.

Patch dining room and living room walls where specified, sand to smooth finish. Install new painted homeowner supplied chair rail in place of old chair rail - patch nail holes & caulk chair rail. John of KC Contracting promptly returned my call when I needed to have my gutters replaced. He assessed the damage and provided an estimate for what he thought was necessary. Subsequently, he helped clarify the extent of the damage with my insurance company and agreed to lower the contracted price due to the insurance company's prevailing rates. Throughout this time John was always quick to return calls, and he performed the work in the anticipated time frame. He and his crew did the work without hitch, and cleaned up when they were done.

Yes, I will definitely hire this company again. Checking on line on Angie's List is how I found the company, and reading the positive reports convinced me to choose them from many other referrals. John returns phone calls the same day he hears from you-even if it was from an email. His crew showed up bright and early. They didn't even blocked the driveway with their truck,.so everyone was able to go to work and school. The work was done promptly without any mishaps. Prompt and considerate, plus polite-what else could you ask for from a contractor. He is a winner.
Description of Work: In February, our front and back gutter were damaged due to heavy ice from the snowfall in February. KC Contracting promptly came over to give an estimate. They came back later to measure and purchase the supplies. On the schedule work day, a team of three guys installed the gutters and downspouts within two- three hours. They also, clean and dispose of the previous gutters.

John and/or his crew came to my home on 3 occasions due to water entering my home through the master closet or bathroom window. Since John put on my roof 3 years ago, the first time I called he came out as a courtesy. As we determined that the roof was not the issue, during warmer temperatures they attempted to stop the leaking by using caulking. During all the visits, they removed snow from my roof and melted the ice in the gutters. Due to the cold temperatures and removing snow from the roof a few shingles were damaged. John assured me that he would replace them in the spring. I've had John and his crew at my home several times now, and I know that John stands behind his work. I was happy with the work they performed during dangerous and bad weather conditions.

I would definitely use K.C. Contracting again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to family/friends. I called because of a concern with back gutters having about 5" or more of ice in them along with huge icicles. My concern was two-fold...ice build-up leading to water damage in the attic and then to the house and the gutters falling down because of the weight of ice/icicles. The arrived on schedule. They checked the attic to see if any problems existed already (they did not) - got to work immediately and did everything they could to remove as much ice from the gutters over my decks as they could. They worked so hard in such miserable conditions. John Kindler and his employees are wonderful - I have other work that needs to be done and they will be the first ones I contact. I trust John...This is a wonderful company.

With the massive snowstorms, ice dams had formed on our second story roof, causing water to leak down into the walls of the house. I called the morning after discovering the leak, and the work was scheduled for the next day. The work ended up being delayed an additional day due to workload. The work crew called to let me know when they were heading to the house, and arrived on time with their expected time. A quick look at the roof, verifying the issue and the work to be done to remove the ice dams, and up they went. Fast, efficient work, willing to answer questions and give advice on how to take care of the roof in snow storms. They went up on the roof, removed the snow from the lower half of the roof, pulled ice from the gutter and downspout, and poured de-icing agent down the downspout to clear the downspouts. Afterwards, they even cleaned the snow from the sidewalks and put down salt on the sidewalks as well. Very satisfied!
Description of Work: Removed snow and ice from the bottom half of the roof to break up/eliminate ice dams.

I had water coming into my family room around the window due to ice built up in the gutters---they came and removed the snow and poured calcium chloride into the gutters and the leaking stopped by that night. They also explained that this would probably just be a temporary fix if it continued to snow and the ice continued to form. They were on time, friendly and did a great job.
Description of Work: cleared a portion of the roof and gutters of snow and ice
