J R Paving Contractors Inc

One of the worst contractors I’ve ever dealt with. I found them from Angie’s List so this is my cautionary tale for anyone on here considering hiring them. JR came out personally to inspect the site early May 2016 to give us an estimate for a new driveway where a paved driveway had never been before. He claimed to have been in business for years, based in my township and he knew exactly what he was doing. Even though he personally inspected the property, when we received our estimate ($3500) there was nothing about a possible separate line item for a curb cut and nothing about us paying a permit fee. His assistant (Paul) said the work would be completed in 45 days or less - no mention of permits. Well, time goes on and we follow up with Paul repeatedly - they keep telling us to get ready, they’ll get to the work soon. Then excuse after excuse - May goes by, June goes by- then in July they tell us we have to apply for the permit. So we get the permit and then its August. They show up on Aug. 26 and township shows up and says we need a curb cut. Instead of apologizing for being wrong about the need for a curb cut or not providing that in the estimate and he’ll cover the cost, JR tells us either we pay $2500 more for a curb cut or his men were leaving after we waited for them all summer! I told him we didn’t have that kind of money ready. So we made a deal to pay a reduced cost of $2250 (I apparently convinced JR this was a crummy thing to do to us) after three months - so it should have been due on or around Nov. 26. I paid the $3500 original fee in full on-site and would pay the extra by November. JR’s son collected our payment on Aug. 26 and wrote “Owes $2250 - 3 months” on our paid invoice. Well suffice it to say, they did an lousy job with the curb cut (jagged edges, curb ended up at same or similar height as what it had been previously) and failed to inform us about basic care instructions (don’t park in one spot too long, don’t turn the tires in one spot or the driveway will be damaged). Then - and this is the absolute worst - the early morning of Sept. 23 - they called me and told me I had to immediately make payment even though JR told me I could have until November to pay the extra unexpected cost for the curb cut. They claimed I agreed to make installment payments on the phone with JR and I was past due. I never made that agreement. They emailed me - on that day Sept. 23 - with a fake payment schedule and notice of default and they told me that since I didn’t make the schedule of payments (that I was first hearing about on that day), they were - on Monday, the next business day - planning to file a lien! The fake payment schedule and notice of default also totaled an amount we didn’t owe and had never heard about - $2400. Then - like insane people - they drove to my house that day on Sept. 23 and taped the fake payment schedule I was seeing for the first time and notice of default on my front door. In any case, we told them to back off - basically everything stated above - then paid our bill over the next weeks - what we agreed to pay and no more - and moved on. We will never use this company again. This company was deceptive and unprofessional at the least. Their terrible customer service, rude attitude and harassment was beyond the pale. The deceptive billing in my case is something everyone should be warned of. As someone who found these folks and contacted them solely because of their good reviews on Angie’s List - buyer beware.

JR has been in the business a long time. He knew what he was doing. He was very responsive and his crew was excellent! They completed all the work we needed done in 2 1/2 days. We have gotten many compliments on our new driveway and concrete work. I would definitely hire them again.

Great done when told it was going to get done and answered all my questions

I spent a lot of time getting quotes and the cheaper but I think they weren't much different. They are a nice big company. I trust them so I pay a little bit higher price, but they were acceptable. They gave me good service. They gave me a three-year warranty. I think that's worth it. It looks okay. They gave me a three-year warranty. Every year they are going to come here to repeat the sealing. For three years I don't' have to worry I think that's good. Their responsiveness was good. I am going to refer them to my friends.

The driveway was paved and sealed per their instructions however chairs damaged the driveway as well as chairs and they failed to honor the warranty and told me that it is my fault They said that it takes one and a half to two years for blacktop to cure and that I should know better than to turn my wheel on a new driveway or sit in my driveway on a hot day basically implying I'm the idiot, anybody reading this did you know that it takes two years before your driveway hardens , that for two years you should only drive straight in and out of your driveway and not sit on it I reached out to them on several occasions and they never got back to me and when I brought up the fact that the driveway was warranted they told me no they weren't going to fix it because it was my fault for turning the steering wheel on my driveway that was only nine months old, the damage wasn't done in the beginning it was done nine months later

coated with material that they have. Originally, I thought they will use Asphalt (hot stuff) for the coating, but they did not. They told me they never use tar for coating. In general, they did a good job.

Excellent work. It was very quick and professional at a very reasonable price.

They were good I was happy with them. Some of the follow ups I had to do with them but it was good. It's like a mom and pap shop so I think getting back in touch with them for future problem or issues were a little bit tedious.

They did exactly what they said they would do, with the right equipment to do the job efficiently and quickly. The price was very reasonable and all went well as promised. I would use them again.

Three came when scheduled and did the job well.

This was the worst experience that I have ever had with a contractor or any type of service provider. The work was not done properly and they would not come back to fix. The cement that was put on the walls immediately cracked and fell down. The owner and every person that I spoke with was extremely rude and unhelpful. Do not use this contractor. I repeat, do not use this contractor.

Two days before the work was scheduled, I called them to make sure they would come on the agreed day. Spoke with JR who told me that the estimator (Paul) made a mistake in measuring the driveway. He said the cost was 10,000, but he would do driveway for 8,000! Can you believe this! What a con job. I told him no thank you and he started yelling at me on the phone, blaming the estimator who he said was a special needs individual. Do not use this company. F+++++++++++++++++++++

At the time of quote, everything was handled very professionally. They returned calls/emails promptly with estimate/contract, and I was told I would get a call in a week to get the job scheduled. Then, next day morning I get a call and the gentlemen says they are in the area and will be doing my driveway in 2 hours. So much for scheduling and advance notice. Once done, the work was mostly good, apart from some uneven spots where puddles do form. But, that was written in their contract, so I did not make a big deal out of it. Another thing in the contract is that I have to get seal coating done within 90 days from their company for the warranty to be valid. That's where things have gone extremely south. I have now called three times, and have yet to hear back to them. Twice I have talked to a lady who took my phone # and promised a call back, and nothing yet. At this point, I am going to get seal coating done from a third party and hopefully they will honor their warranty. For future, I would stay away from this company and their bait and switch business.

I am thoroughly pleased with the job. I made the initial phone call. A very polite and professional woman took my information. JR returned my call. Both she and JR gave me confidence that I was dealing with a class-A reputable business, that really helped. JR came out reviewed my job. He laid out his plan, installed the following week as promised. I couldn't be happier with the finished product at any cost. However, his pricing was the best easily crushing all other estimates. I saved $$$, literally between several hundred and thousands (sadly) for what I think to be apples to apples though I'm not 100% on this. Either way, end result and quality of work is exceptional. My driveway was a complete wreck with crumbling gravel, cracks and mounds, weeds ugh, you name it. I left out for work in the morning, and returned home to a beautiful driveway I'm now so proud of, immediate curb-appeal boost. I would take advantage of his experience, knowledge, and fair pricing. As with most things i did my homework, JR Paving and Angieslist is a winning combination! I had no idea I could be so enthusiastic about home improvement let alone a driveway! 100% positive experience. I hope this review helps those deciding. Thank you!

Cheaper than the rest, flawless job, completed in half a day.

We chose J.R. out of the 4 pavers we met. He was the most knowledgeable (professional, friendly and honest) and offered the best price for the highest quality of work. He answered all of our questions and explained everything in detail. Our very long circular driveway (154' long x 10' wide) was a mess: slopes, grooves, deep potholes and extensive multi-layered crumbling asphalt. The driveway had steep inclines on either end and dipped down toward the garage. We were concerned with water pooling and flowing into the garage. They leveled it perfectly and we've had no problems. They have top-notch equipment, extensive knowledge and integrity. J.R. and his crew showed up on time and worked diligently all day for two days. They were professional, courteous, friendly, honest and did an incredible job! Our driveway looks fantastic! Everyone is amazed at the difference. I highly recommend them.

I was not present for the work itself, but from the finished product it's clear that they re-edged and applied a full, solid, smooth asphalt surface to the driveway. They cleaned up the area well after completion.

First, Joe (I believe JR Jr.) is a total gentleman and on the job the entire time. Secondly, the entire crew was professional, timely and highly experienced. I chatted with a few of the guys and all were very nice and took great care in working around landscaping and were extremely tidy. They work quickly and efficiently - they were here by 9am and completely finished by 130pm. I would HIGHLY recommend them and would absolutely call them again when a need arises.

There are certain trades that are very hard to find quality people to do residential jobs. I contacted a lot of companies who said the job was too small. J R Paving also does major commercial work but they returned my inquiry right away. The owner explained he had a number of large jobs but if I could wait, he would do my driveway. He took time to explain every step of the job including the grinding and removal of any tree roots. They showed up precisely when he indicated they would start. He checked in after to give follow up instructions and said he would be by to inspect the work which he did.

Work was completed in 2 days. The steps were removed and top soil was added to extend the lawn. the driveway was widened and repaved. great job! I will definetly recommend the company.

The experience was very positive. We contacted 5-6 companies and ended up getting 4 bids for the job, and JR Paving was significantly less expensive than the others. We have a shared driveway, and JR himself came out to give me the quote and then came back again to walk my neighbor through the job and his price. We were told the job would be performed within 3-4 weeks once we accepted their quote, and they ended up coming to pave the driveway the following week. The entire job was finished within 6 hours, and we have been very happy with the quality of the work. I would definitely recommend JR Paving.

JR and the crew did an excellent job. He was responsive, and upfront about the timing of the job. It was the best price for a complete milling and repaving. The driveway looks incredible, and have been complemented multiple times within the past few months. The edges look great. The drainage problem is completely fixed. The driveway is nicely sloped, and the water is run off correctly. It only took a few hours, and the crew showed up timely. I would highly recommend JR.

Great, JR gave me a great price as a way to help keep from idling his crews between big jobs. As a result I wasn't given a date on when work would be performed, he called me the morning of and said they'd be coming by. They came over and got the job done very quickly, was already done by the time I got home. They were friendly, did great work, a cost less than other quotes I received. We now have a great looking, properly leveled driveway. Would use them again.

Spoke with JR, he quoted me a price over the phone and did the job as outlined. I would certainly use J R Paving in the future! Updated 8/15..... after the big job was done, I became an after thought. I was told to call 90 days later to have the driveway sealed. I called on 7/2 and was told I would be taken care of. After 6 weeks of no contact, I decided to use another company who gave me a better price and completed the sealcoat within 1 week of initial contact. Unfortunately, the experience ended on a sour note.

The entire process went great. They were punctual, we were able to ask them question and they were not irritated. There was no slacking on the job,they worked from the time they arrived,until the time they were finished. When they were finished, they asked if we were pleased with the job. That showed us that they cared about the finished product and that we were happy with it. Our new blacktop is beautiful. Mr.JR was very kind to us and flexible, and we're getting a lot of compliments from our neighbors.
