Steve was very professional. He returned our calls and emails in a timely manner, showed up on time, and really listened to what we wanted. He gave suggestions and even when we changed our mind on the final project he was very understanding. The trees look great. We would definitely hire Steve again.
Description of Work: Planted approximately 14 trees and two bushes.

I had a flowerbed in my front yard that was completely overgrown and filled with weeds and grass, that had been neglected because it was inaccessible from a wheelchair ramp that had been there before we purchased the house. There was also a large bush in the flower bed I wanted removed. I also had two small raised garden beds, and I wanted my vegetable garden expanded. Steve was very quick to return my call, and promptly came out to assess what I wanted and his ideas for my flowerbed and garden. He returned the following week with a proposal and information on the plants he wanted to put in my flowerbed, and talked to me and my husband about the ongoing maintenance required for the plants, etc. I could really tell he has an expansive knowledge and he was helpful to answer any questions we had. He came back on the promised day to complete the work, and was punctual. He made my flowerbed look great, and also got my garden ready for the spring, and also took some time to talk to me about ideas for vegetables, plant spacing, etc. He could definitely tell that we are new to gardening and he really gave us the confidence to continue the work on our lawn and garden. It was great to work with him and I will definitely call him again for any landscaping needs I have.
Description of Work: Cleaned flowerbed, removed a bush, debri, weeds, grass, etc. Planted new flowers and mulched. Also expanded a vegetable garden and prepared it for summer.

The process was very smooth. We purchase some larger landscaping stones to edge some landscaping beds. Handlebar Landscaping was very helpful and actually helped us load the rocks into the bucket of one of his tractors and assisted with loading the rocks into my truck. Very simple and a great time saver!
Description of Work: We purchased some landscaping rocks from Handlebar Landscaping. The owner assisted us in loading the rocks into the loader's bucket and moving to the purchaser truck.

It went wonderfully. Steve drew up multiple plans for us as we had a hard time deciding on the exact layout of the path. He worked with us to figure out just what would work well with the existing landscape. He came on time and worked in a very professional manner, with a beautiful result. It was a pleasure to have him working at our house.
Description of Work: Steve ripped up our existing concrete walkway and put in pavers.

Description of Work: After getting the estimate it was weeks before the work was started. I did not have a large area to be landscaped but some grasses I wanted removed were not. Also, the plant that was the majority of the cost died within a month due to the rain last summer. I told him about it and I was told he would replace it with something and that was the last I had heard from him. No refund, no replacement, no communication. It says that plants and trees are guaranteed for one year. He acted as though I watered it too much when it was Mother Nature that did the watering.

Response from Handlebar Landscaping
There was a lack of communication in both directions here. -I was told there was no particular hurry, and since it was a small job, I fit it in when I could. -On site, I was asked not to remove the grass in question, just trim it. She was billed appropriately for what I did- the verbal proposal was $360, actual invoice was $285. -Payment was received after some time and a note with the payment mentioned the dead plant. -Within 1 week I visited the site, found the plant to be dead. Due to the timing(mid summer) I decided to postpone replanting to a more appropriate time. -At this point, I messed up, lost track of things and forgot about it. -I never heard from her until reading this review. -She has been refunded in full ($150) for the cost of the dead plant.

The design was fabulous and the plants are beautiful. All work was done with care and great satisfaction. Our plants, shrubs and trees are rapidly growing and are in perfect shape. The thick bed of mulch was laid down and has stopped any weeds from coming through.
Description of Work: Handlebar Landscaping designed and installed our landscaping for the front of the house. We requested that the majority of the old plants and tree be pulled out. New plantings, shrubs, and trees were planted.

Steve started the project within the month. There was some demo work needed to prepare the surface which we decided to do ourselves. The area that was going to have flagstone was quite large, and we wanted very large pieces of stone. Steve found some wonderful stone and had it delivered. After prepping the surface, Steve started laying the stone. He is a master at cutting and laying the stone so that gaps are minimal. It resembles a puzzle. The pieces fit almost perfectly. I was stunned to learn that he was doing all the work by himself. Because Steve works alone, the project took longer than we all expected, but it was totally worth the wait. In addition to the flagstone Steve incorporated two design elements. One was integrating a granite millstone, that he made himself, into the flagstone layout. The other was a beautiful bench made from Acadian granite. We have received many compliments on the work. Without a doubt, we would have Steve back for other projects.
Description of Work: If you are seeking someone who is a true artist, Steve from Handlebar landscaping is the person for you. We contacted Steve in early summer to give us an estimate on replacing and enlarging a flagstone patio. We had an idea of what we wanted and Steve offered some very creative suggestions. Within a week he had prepared a proposal, and met us at our house to discuss. He spent a lot of time with us, detailing the project and answering our questions. He seemed genuinely excited about designing the patio. We received three other estimates from companies that didn't have Steve creativity or enthusiasm. His estimate was competitive. All four estimates were in the same ball park, except for one that was through the roof.

I called in July to have an estimate in redoing all the landscaping surrounding my home. He came out within a few days and spent a good amount of time discussing what needed to be done. However, a couple of weeks went by with no word. I called him in early August and his machine said calls would be returned on the 5th of the month. I spoke with him the following week at which time he said he would have an estimate ready by week's end. It is now September 9th and I never have heard back. I do not recommend using this vendor.

He did everything that we wanted to have done. He was very thorough. He looked at the plantings and adjusted some of them. We followed his advice and we were happy to do so. He did everything pretty much himself and we were very satisfied. He showed some good things and we chose something that we really liked. I thought that the price was fair for what he did. We were willing to pay the price for what he provided. In fact, we want another part of our backyard to be worked on and so we would use his services in the future too.
Description of Work: We used the services of Handlebar Landscaping in June of this year for landscaping an area in our backyard. The landscaper laid a stone path and also installed some lighting along the path.

It was pleasurable to work with Steve Eshleman. His price qoutes were professional and clear. His knowledge level was superior and he maintained good communication with us prior to and during job site date;he was prompt in all aspects. Since our job was relatively small (three 8-9? Norway spruce plus minor landscape adjustments); Steve completed the job himself in 1 1/4 days, thus saving him labor expenses and us cost. We will definitely call on Handlebar Landscaping again for our landscape needs.
Description of Work: Planted three 9 foot Norway spruce trees and minor grading adjacent requireing one yard on top soil plus drain pipe.

Once I made contact by email, I received an immediate reply. Steve came to my house to give me an estimate within a couple of days, and followed up with a written estimate by mail several days later. One week later he installed the plants, which were large and of good quality. He is very knowledgable about plants and what work best in different light and soils. He will be providing a plan for another larger area of my yard in a couple of months when I am ready to tackle that project. I would definitely recommend Handlebar Landscaping.
Description of Work: Steve helped me design a plan for part of my back yard to help screen my view of the neighboring house. He planted three large bushes and mulched, and gave me tips on how to integrate some smaller bushes I had to move from other areas.

Steve Eshelman, who sports a handlebar mustache and is the owner/operator of Handlebar Landscaping, promptly returned my initial phone call and showed up at our house on time for the appointment we made to discuss the project. My wife and I wanted to incorporate a curve into the new walkway and this would add about another 12 feet to the original length of the walkway. I explained that we wanted to reuse our old bricks and would like to expand the width of the walk from its original 3 feet to 3.5 feet. Also we wanted to flare the ends of the walk. By combining bricks from our back walkway with those from the front walkway, Steve determined that we would indeed have enough bricks to complete the job. Steve's estimate for the job was $3740 but he informed me that the price could be reduced if I could do some of the work. This estimate was about average for the 5 estimates I received for the job. Steve showed us pictures of many of his landscaping projects and he mentioned that he would do all of the work himself; the pictures of his projects showed me that he was a meticulous craftsman and I liked the fact that he did all of his own work. About a week or two after I signed the contract with him, he started the job. Before he started the job, I removed and washed all of the bricks from the old walkway. This took me many hours, but was not difficult and saved me $450 off of the original estimate that Steve provided to me. Steve brought in his equipment for digging a new base for the walk. He was very neat and respected my landscape plantings that were located near the walkway. After digging the base he brought in about 6 - 8 tons of crushed stone for the base which was tamped down with a motorized tamper. Steve designed the walkway to make sure that no water would accumulate and that drainage would not be a problem. A 1 inch layer of sand on top of the gravel provided a base onto which the bricks were placed in a running bond pattern. To accommodate the flaring at the end of the walkway, Steve had to cut a number of bricks - some of them being in small triangular shapes. After the bricks were placed and leveled, sand was worked in the cracks between the bricks. A final layer of "polysand" was placed in the cracks to provide an almost cement like character to the sand. The finished walkway is beautiful and we have received many compliments from our neighbors. The old bricks provide much character to the walkway and, in our opinion, look much better than the uniform nature of new brick pavers. We are 100% satisfied with our walkway and with Steve's work. During the whole project, Steve was very professional and cleaned up after every day's work. Since Steve is also a Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturist, he also provided some suggestions for landscaping around our new walkway. All in all, this project exceeded my expectations and I can recommend Steve's work without reservation.
Description of Work: We had a 40 foot brick walkway that was about 30 years old and had sunk below the level of the adjacent landscaping. This walkway was located in the front of our house and went from the driveway to the front porch. In addition to being unsightly and not level, the walkway accumulated mud runoff after rains and could become icy in the winter because of water accumulation due to poor drainage and its sunken state. We wanted to redo this walkway reusing the beautiful old bricks (and some other matching bricks from another similar walkway from the back of our house that I removed previously).
