The professionalism of their sales person was exceptional. jason walked us through the process and gave a detailed proposal for all work that was to be done. The owner even came out the first day of construction to help prepare the site. Jason continued to be our contact throughout the process checking in periodically and following up after completion. The workers were pleasant, polite and professional. The work was completed in a timely manner. The area was clean and organized each day. The dry wall person did an excellent job; clean seams and smooth surface, as well as trim around the door and windows on the inside wall. It is a beautiful room and we use it everyday.
Description of Work: Betterliving built a sunroom on our existing 12 by 24 covered porch. The windows were custom fit to the dimensions of our porch.

After signing the contract and making the initial payment, the project started slightly behind schedule. However, during this period we stayed in constant contact with our salesman discussing and finalizing product and other fine details of the project. A project foreman was assigned who did measurements, delivered materials, and scheduled work crews for the various phases of the project. He was knowledgeable and did a good job of communicating with us throughout the entire project. During the demolition phase of the project an unforeseen problem was encountered with an existing support beam. There was a known leak in our roof that was to be fixed as part of the project. However, the extensive damage to the existing beam was not expected and needed replaced adding additional cost and time to the project. We felt that the additional cost was fair and that the replacement beam was installed properly. The existing leak in the roof was fixed. However, some of the existing plywood (under the roofing tiles) and fascia showing signs of dampness and deterioration was left in place. We later agreed that the work to make these repairs would be completed in the spring. Another problem was encountered when the township inspector required additional support for the roof due to the cathedral ceiling. A ridge bean had to be installed which was not in the original plans adding more time to the project. The project foreman did a good job of working with us and the inspector to satisfy both parties. The finished ceiling with the ridge beam and ceiling fan look great. We love the wall system with all the glass. And, we are glad we added the electric radiant heat in the floor under the ceramic tile although this took longer than expected to install and added time to the project. The finished room is the perfect upgrade that we can use year round. The Betterliving crew was professional, punctual, and did quality work. They arrived on the job site when they said they would. This was important to us since we were coordinating our work schedules. We would use Betterliving again and recommend them to anyone for their sunroom project.
Description of Work: Converted an existing screened-in porch to an all-seasons sunroom which included: 1. Demo portions of existing screened-in porch including roof supports and ceiling. Remove all debris. 2. Install insulated sleeper floor with electric radiant heat and finished ceramic tile floor. 3. Install white vinyl all season porch wall system with gable glass on front. 4. Install insulated cathedral ceiling. 5. Install electric package for sunroom including ceiling fan.

Betterliving Patio rooms was very proffesional with the entire project from start to finish. They took great care to protect all of my landscaping. Ray explained in great detail on how the project would proceed and what would be done to my roof and how the roof system was to be applied. The crew that came to do the work was very polite and made sure to to disrupt my life while they were here. When the job was finished everything was cleaned up as if they were never here which was very important to me because when you pay for something to be done you shouldnt have to do part of their job when they leave.I would highly recomend BetterLiving Patios to anyone who is looking for a proffesional company and one that says what they will do and it gets done.I will be using them agian in the future.

No start and no finish. Just hassle
Description of Work: We decided against this company as a local contractor offered a better living space for 1/2 the price. Since declining the bid we have been called numberous times with other peoples names. How does our phone number get on someone elses order. This seems fishy to me. Just for the hastle factor, I would not recommend getting a quote from this company as you may be harrassed for saying no thank you

Response from Betterliving Patio Rooms of Pittsburgh
We take every customer’s feedback very seriously whether they purchase from us or not. In continually trying to improve our communications with our customers we hired a new employee to call an update them constantly with the status of their project. Unfortunately, erroneously this person had written down the wrong phone number, and called it several times leaving messages to update the customer with their project status. As this reviewer has stated in their comments we had called them several times with someone else’s name that being the name of the customer who we were calling to schedule the installation of their purchased item. We feel terrible about this mistake, and wish the reviewer would have understood the error that we made, and not judged us so unjustly. We DO NOT harass our prospective customers, and when we are told the person is not interested in our products or has purchased from someone else, we do listen and remove them from our system. We are sincerely sorry for this mistake and will take more precautionary steps in the future to verify customer’s phone numbers.

They originally stated that they would be able to start the job at the beginning of September but they were late because of weather and other jobs they had to finish but that was o.k. Once started, Josh, worked really hard to make everything as perfect as possible. When we expressed concerns about something he listened and did exactly what we wanted him to do. He did this job by himself, I believe he was supposed to have a helper but he was sick. It took him five days to complete the job but the quality of work is excellent and we couldn't be happier. He cleaned everything up every day to our satisfaction. We would definitely use them again!
Description of Work: We had Betterliving turn our existing covered deck into a screen room. The job involved removal of the railing, and building around a chimney as well as filling in the gaps of our existing deck roof and installation of two doors.

We had a back porch that has sun all day long and we tried numerous ways to make it a more livable space for our family. We finally decided that we were going to enclose it and put a roof on it. We were not sure exactly what we wanted it to look like but knew what we wanted. Ray came and walked us through our options and gave us the price right on the spot. After he left we called repeatedly to ask questions and get further prices and Ray answered all questions immediately and with much professionalism and courtesy. We could not have been happier with the ease with which Ray helped us to make decisions that made our home look its best. The crew that arrived to do the work was professional and skillled. The speed with which the work was done was surprising but not as surprising as the number of neighbors that came to tell us how much they loved the work being done to our home. The screen room looks as though it always a part of our home. It is beautiful and we could not be happier. We have had so many people stop to tell us how much they love what we have done, we can hardly believe it. At each step of the process, Ray was available to us to answer any questions or issues that we had. He said he would not let us down and he did not. We simply could not be happier with the room, the product, or the workmanship. We have added a fantastic space that my family will enjoy for years to come. We would highly recommend Betterliving Patio Rooms.
Description of Work: Betterliving Homes and Patio's built a screen room with a shingled gable roof and vinyl railing. They also replaced outdoor lighting fixtures, and added a ceiling fan into the new screen room. Additionally, they upgraded our existing deck to code (which was no easy feat, our deck had some issues from previous badly completed work done on it).

They were very helpful. I had a considerable number of changes I wanted done as the work progressed. They satisfied my desires. They worked promptly and efficiently. I believe that the work was priced fairly and would not hesistate to use them again.
Description of Work: They installed a 24x18 sun room attachment to my house. This required a considerable amount of work. They had to take out part of a brick wall of my house to install French doors as the entry into the room. They also had to do a considerable amount of earth moving. This required the installion of stone retaining walls, steps and a brick courtyard.

Sales pitch was great. Went downhill from there. We went with this company even though they were not the lowest price. Ray, the owner, promised good communications throughout the process. This turned out to be lip service. Many of my phone calls to the project manager were not returned. I had to keep calling the owner to get my questions answered to for him to get the project manager to call me back. The overall quality seems ok for now but they lack in attention to detail. They messed up some interior trim work and we are still waiting for them to return to replace it. (two months since work began) I made the mistake of making the final payment before accepting the job as complete (shame on me).

About 18 months later we saw that the shingles were showing the nail heads. We called the company and even though it was now outside of the warranty they came back and re-nailed and tarred the nails so that the nail "pops" were not visible under the shingles. Roof has been fine since. Very nice folks and very reasonable.
Description of Work: We had a sun room installed by another company in 2000. However, the roof was not shingled at that time and Better Living came and installed a shingled roof over the composite roof that was part of the original installation.

Did due diligence with Angie's List reviews, Better Business Bureau and state licensing agencies. Visited well-displayed showroom with knowledgeable sales staff. Owner, Ray Rupp, visited our home after regular business hours for lap-top computer presentation of work he has done similar to what we envisioned. Signed contract June 1, with projected start of late June/early July. Unusually wet weather caused work delays until end of July. The only work they sub-contract, concrete, was completed about two weeks before roof installation. To reduce yard damage, concrete was pumped to site at rear of our elevated property. About a four-day process, start to finish, not counting the weekend when no work was done. Very hot weather that week, with several threats of thunderstorms, which, obviously, is not good for working on roofs or with metal. An on-the-job-injury to the crew-leader required a shift in the workcrews, with some other members coming in to help "catch up", then leaving to return to their regular sites. As questions/concerns came up, the roving construction coordinator and/or the company owner were available by phone and email to answer. There did seem to be a difference in how well the work day went during the injured crew-leader's one-day absence (a Friday), and the crew was gone by 2pm that day. I was also surprised when no work was done the next day, a good-weather Saturday. I had not been informed in advance that they would not be working that day. The owner, Ray did stop in to check on the job and help complete finishing tasks. I had been discussing with him, and his construction co-ordinator, the possibility of constructing a custom safety grate for the window-well which extended into the now 4"high floor area. Admittedly, this was not part of the initial contract/costs, and was not part of their normal operation. But I had been told by Ray during several discussions that they were exploring ways to meet our request, even at extra cost. During some of the "catch-up" work when the crew-leader was off, I noticed some eye-catching misalignment of screwheads where some sheetmetal wrapping met previously-installed wrapping on a support post. The owner agreed with me when I pointed it out to him, and, unsolicited, said he would replace that section when replacement materials arrived at the warehouse. I am disappointed that neither the window-well grate, nor the screwhead misalignment were ever resolved during or after construction. I do acknowledge quick action on Ray's part, however, when, several days after completion, we experienced rain water coming down through the damp-environment-ready ceiling fan in the roof peak. He came the next day to take care of it with additional roof flashing/caulking, and had checked with the fan manufacturer, as did I, to be sure that the water intrusion would not be harmful to the fan motor. I recognize that no construction project runs completely as expected, and even with my disappointments here, I would still recommend Ray Rupp and Betterliving Patio and Sunrooms because I believe they really do have the best interest of their customers at heart, and I expect to contact them for add-ons in the future. UPDATE: Within days of submitting my original report, Ray called to say he saw my comments and to acknowledge his concern that I was disappointed about the screwhead misalignment mentioned above. He had made note of the problem, but indicated it was something that eluded his attention and wanted to make it right. He encouraged me to call him personally should I discover any future problems. We agreed on a day later in the week when he could attend to the correction. His crew chief on my original job came out and made the correction to my satisfaction, and, again, encouraged me to call immediately if any other problem should develop. Further, it is my decision that the window-well is not a concern that should involve Better Living in any way. I am fully-pleased with my exprience with Better Living.
Description of Work: Removed existing corrugated aluminum "lean-to" patio cover, to replace with gable roof system. Removed old poured concrete pad and sidewalk slabs used to extend patio area. The floor area had been covered over by outdoor carpeting. Poured all new 4" concrete base (11'x20') with reinforcing fiberglass threads added to mix, steel rebar tied into foundation and steel mat (some salvaged from original pad). Support posts were on separately-poured pilasters dug to below frost line. Building permits met local code to allow us, or future owners, to finish this open patio room "starter" package into a completely enclosed four-season room if desired. Key to our needs was the addition of roof gutters and tie-in to previously-installed drain system to re-direct water that had been penetrating the foundation due to no guttering on the previous patio cover. Also replaced old single-pane glass window in laundry room window-well, which extended into patio floor area, with vented glass block window.

This summer I decided to look into enclosing my back porch into a 3 or 4 season sunroom. I had the concrete slab and roof so I started doing research on my options. I received three different estimates and was about to commit to one company but then I stumbled across Better Living (never heard of them before). I was very impressed with their website (very informative) and the reviews, so I gave them a call. Ray, the president, responded quickly and came out within a couple days. I was very impressed with his approach - very knowledgeable and not pushy at all - and he gave me some excellent tips and things to look out for even if I did not go with him. He gave me a good idea about closing off my back door and converting a rear window to a french door that would lead out to the sunroom - which I ultimately had them do as well. I felt very comfortable with him and his assurances of the quality of his company and product - especially compared to the three other companies that came out. Ray convinced me to consider the four season room for the more year round use and minimal difference in price. The estimate Ray gave me was a little higher than the the other companies, but comparable. Ray provided me with all the information and did not try to commit me to anything that night. After meeting with him, my wife and I agreed that Better Living was the best despite the higher price than we originally expected. I always believed in quality and would pay more instead of always going with the lower bid. I called Ray the next day and he was back out a couple days later to finalize. He quoted me about 6-8 weeks to start construction, actually turned out to be about 10 weeks. They assigned a project manager (Josh) who oversaw the project and two workers were assigned, Kevin and Walter, who completed the project. They showed up on time every day, worked hard, cleaned up after themselves and were very professional. A couple of days into the project, they discovered that the roof was water damaged and was leaking. They gave me a fair quote on a new roof/shingles and corrected the design of the roof which led to the problem in the first place. I did not want to spend the additional money but it might have been a good thing it was discovered due to the water damage it was causing. I also decided to finish/insulate the ceiling since the roof was being done. Once again, more money than I expected to pay, but I am happy I did - it completely finished the room and it is like an addition to my house now. The project in total took about 10 days and I could not be happier with the results and the quality of the room.
Description of Work: Enclosed my back porch into a four season sunroom - including new roof/shingles and insulate/drywall the ceiling. Also framed off a back door, removed exterior siding on rear of house to drywall, and converted a rear window into a french door.

I met this company at the Home Expo in march '11. They came to give an estimate, builder returned to evaluate what was going to be built, and all persons were very considerate. When building time came as they estimated, they were able to acquire permit and began. Work and materials arrived just as they said, and they worked totally on doing the job. There was nothing they were not prepared or able to handle, it went very well.
Description of Work: We added small three season sunroom and deck to replace old porch at back of smaller city home. The old porch deck needed to be removed and they helped estimate size for raised room and adjoining deck. to come off existing back door of house. The sunroom turned out beautifully and the deck; they are both private and cozy. It is perfect for us. The way everything works, their work , and the materials are just beautiful. The craftsmen we had were Chris, Steve and Mark. They worked skillfully, professionally and timely. Thank you for a wonderful product and service.

The overall experience can be described in one word: beautiful! We'd done the right thing and ventured to get a number of quotes at the start, from a range of companies. We then found Ray on Angie's List - he was rated nicely on Angie's List and gave him a call. Ray was prompt in coming out and right from the start put us in complete ease. Before he even gave us the quote, he tried to understand the reason behind why we wanted the sunroom and what we wanted out of it. It was great - he basically treated this project like it was his own, completely pouring his heart and soul into the entire project - - not overlooking every bit of detail, big and small. His quote was sort of middle of the road, but his work was supreme. The quality of the materials he used was top notch. And his attitude and aptitude in the entire process was the stuff one can only hope for! We had to get the right permissions/permits/variance from the township - and Ray was in charge; handling every aspect of this masterfully. Ray's crew was great too; and they worked hard to get the job done, well, BEAUTIFULLY! We plan to use Ray for more projects!!
Description of Work: We wanted a nice sunroom at the back of our home where we had a concrete porch area - so we could enjoy the seasons, and the nature in our already beautiful home.

CONCRETE PAD WAS NOT PROPERLY PREPARED RESULTING IN WATER LEAKAGE FROM RAIN AT BASE OF WALL. SLOW TO RETURN CALLS AND HAS NOT RESOLVED PROBLEM. IN ORDER TO MOVE ALONG, I BOUGHT CAULK AND SEALED THE BASE OF THE WALLS MYSELF TAKING CARE NOT TO BLOCK ANY DRAINAGE HOLES. SO FAR NO WATER!
