We contracted with them after damage from Hurricane Sandy (prices written on the back of a business card 'We don't use contracts'...but we needed the work done ASAP so we ignored the inner warning bells). Phase 1 went as scheduled, but the existing Leylands really weren't trimmed as discussed. We'd talked about really trimming them back, but the before and after photos show that barely a foot was trimmed from the tops. Never had an opportunity to express our displeasure over that due to the below, but they did remove all traces of the downed Lelands and fixed the fence as promised. In phase 2 of the job they had an internal communication error about the scope of the work (remember...no contract?), thinking that they were just going to mulch the new trees, instead of the entire area.. If there was any part of this that was amusing (well, more pathetic than amusing), it was that the owner at the job site called his wife on the phone to call us rather than talk directly to the homeowner standing 30 feet away. Her: "I assumed...." Me: "You were there twice, you didn't need to assume anything...." We wouldn't agree to pay any more (nothing worse than being nickled and dimed at the end of a $1500.00 job that was priced on the high side to begin with)...so she hung up on me, called him, they yanked their trees and left--all without a word, and all over a relative pittance. How passive-aggressive. Turns out that they'd done essentially the same thing with a neighbor: didn't document what they'd promised to do, and then tried to change it (in their favor, of course), during the course of that job. Unfortunately, we didn't find that out until too late; as a matter of fact, we've yet to find anyone who had anything good to say about Arentz General Services.. Avoid them at all costs; hire someone with a modicum of professionalism..and ALWAYS get a contract with the scope of work clearly delineated and agreed to by both sides.
Description of Work: Phase 1 of the job was to to remove 3 downed Leyland Cypresses, and repair fence. Phase 2 was to replant cypresses with new, fix drainage issues, and mulch entire area.

Response from ARENTZ GENERAL SVC
Thankfully your experience is the exception to the rule. After supplying written insurance estimates for 15 years and rarely being contracted, written estimates are always available at a cost of $35.00, that would be removed from cost of job when billed. Trying to get your job done after the storm there was a miscommunication about the area you expected to be mulched and what we had estimated in the job. A 100ft plus run of mulch is more than our small company can afford to give away. We strive to meet or exceed expectations and are truly sorry we couldn't accommodate you.
