Construction schedule was fairly far behind what was projected but they did keep in touch about it and at the end of the day I think if I had been more aggressive about it we would have tightened the schedule up some but I travel extensively for work and it was ok with me. The work completed by the contractor is first rate and I was very happy about it. The vendor used for insulation did not deliver - the job is not well executed and they made a mess of my attic without attempting to clean it up which was extremely aggravating. That said - the exterior work was great and it's substantially increased curb appeal, etc. The quote process was efficient and pretty accurate. There were a couple surprises as there often are during a big job but it all worked out satisfactorily in the end. Give TOPS a shot for your next project.....overall I'm a very satisfied customer.
Description of Work: Fairly large exterior facelift was the main part of the job and those services were performed by the provider himself. New front pillar work, extensive stone work on front entrance and chimney's. New brick and concrete for front porch. New pop-out in the rear of the home with copper like roof and stone work. Home repainted by a vendor the contractor uses and also attic insulation work done by an alternate vendor.

From the moment I met Tom Corey he was always very professional, very thorough and very up-front. Whether it was a scheduled meeting with Tom or the day of the roof job itself, he and his crew always arrived on-time, if not a little early. They were all great guys, worked a long 12-hour day to complete the roof in one day. Tom was very up-front about costs. I knew in advance that they would be checking the status of my very old attic insulation and as soon as he knew it needed replaced, he called me immediately and with my okay, purchased the insulation so they could complete that the same day as the roof. When anything unexpected came up, Tom was in touch with me right away. He explained why a vent pipe needed to be replaced, and showed me the chimney cap that was rusted and falling apart before he would purchase and install a new one. The job site was well-cleaned up when they were done and they made sure there were no nails in my driveway. The gutters and downspouts were done later in the week (following three days of rain) and Tom was in contact with me frequently throughout the week. There were no surprises in the end when it was time to write the check. His estimate was somewhat higher than the other two I got, but I always believe that you get what you pay for. The roof and gutters look fantastic and I couldn't be happier with the job. Tom was great to work with and I would definitely use his company again.
Description of Work: I used Tops for my roofing project. They removed the old roof, including shingles, decking, fascia, soffit, gutters and downspouts. They then replaced all of it and added ridge vents, and finding that the attic insulation was in very poor condition, with my approval, added new insulation.

It was handled exceptionally. I was working with the provider long distance. The company was patient, and communicated well. The work site was always well kept. They were very professional overall. They did the job for my special needs brother and they were very patient with him. They also were very careful replacing the satellite dish after the job and repairing damage done by the satellite company.

Tom was very pleasant to work with. He was professional and courteous to my wife and I. We had a meeting before all of the work began and he helped us choose the best roof to fit our budget. When it came time to install, Tom contacted us to let us know what to expect regarding dumpster delivery and time of start. They finished the project in one day. They cleaned up old materials and swept for nails around the house. They picked up the equipment and dumpster the next day. Tom kept our price as low as possible and everything looks great! We would highly recommend Tops Roofing & Remodeling Company.

Wow. Tom was great. I just asked for an estimate on a portion of the roof above the patio and we were worried that he was going to try to sell us a new roof. He told us that the problem that concerned me wasn't at all that bad, and that it was even too small of a job for him. He gave me tips on how to fix it myself. He didn't try to sell me a roof at all and was also very helpful on how to clean up some of the stains on one area of the roof. He was on time, friendly, helpful, and overall super. I would definitely consider Tom for any job that you may have.

Tom Corry, President, informed me that he did not do roof repairs, but as a courtesy he would give me his opinion on the condition of my roof. I had called Tops due to a water leak in one area of the roof. Mr. Corry did an on-the-roof inspection and stated,"Your roof is not shot". I requested he give me a cost proposal for replacement and he complied. After getting repair estimates, and full roof replacement quotes, from other contractors I decided it made more sense to replace the twenty year roof than to "fix"it. Tops was chosen based on the following: A detailed description of the tasks to be done was included in the contract. Any questions I had were fully answered. Tops had full time, experienced, on-site supervisors who have been working with Tom for a number of years. Once the crew started the job they would stay with it until completion. Tops was the only company who did not ask for money up front. "You pay when you are happy with the job". Tom, stated "we will treat your home as if it were ours". In today's world it's hard to take such a statement seriously, but as I later found out, he meant it. No, Tops was not the low bidder, but my large roof is steep with many detailed areas. The house location makes it difficult to work on. I needed a real pro if it was to go well. What happened: The crew came early in the morning and worked until late in the day, four days in a row. They were organized, supervised and friendly. Yes, they made a mess, but cleaned up at the end of every day. They even went beyond the call of duty and reinstalled a blown off chiminney cap The roof is beautiful, the damage to flowers/planting was minor and well within my expected limits. The end of job clean up was through. It's as if they were never here. I recommend Tops to anyone who wants the job done the right way.

Out of five contractors I received estimates from, Tom was the only one who brought a brochure and contract with him. He explained in detail exactly what I would get, the services to be rendered, and exact cost involved. He supplied me with an extensive list of references. He also did not require a deposit, and explained payment would be received only after the job was satisfactorily completed. I would definitely use them again.

We had contacted Tops in summer 2013 for an estimate, and this estimate was high relative to other quotes from contractors on Angie's list. As the work to be done was not emergent we decided to wait until 2014. The two other businesses from which we received quotes were no longer on Angie's list in 2014 so we decided to go with Tops. Tom has always been professional at every encounter and appears highly ethical. We were originally told that he would not be able to do the work until mid-August, but when we told him we had a large outdoor party in mid-July that we were hoping to have it done by, he was able to accommodate us. The quality of the work was excellent, and when it became apparent that we had a misunderstanding with respect to which gutters were being replaced, Tom offered to cover the extra cost. However, as he had always been so professional and courteous, we offered to split the cost difference with him. I would not hesitate to hire him again based on the quality of work and his professionalism, although one can certainly find lower bids.

Tops designed the garage with very specific requirements regarding handicap accessibility. Some of this project also included VA specific paperwork, requirements and timeline. They worked well coordinating subcontractors for cement, electricity, gutters and handicap lift and kept us informed of the work schedule. Since the garage was attached, windows in the living room were removed and a door added for access to the garage. Interior walls were repaired when windows and doors were changed. During the construction, Tops was observant to keep the doorways clear for my husband's power wheelchair. At the end of each work day, the site was organized. All this work was completed in about 3 weeks. We have received many compliments on how the garage design complements the house. Hats off to Tops Roofing and Remodeling for a job well done.
Description of Work: Tops designed and built a new handicap accessible attached garage. Additionally, the entire project included siding the house, installing a new roof and gutters, replacing 2 windows and refitting an exterior door for handicap accessibility. Tops subcontracted a lift for handicap accessibility into the house.

Tom Corey (President of Topps) personally made an assessment of the roof. He climbed up, took pictures and explained what needed to be done. He also went up into the attic and advised us that our venting needed updated. We knew of the problems with the roof and the venting so we were pleased that he told us of all the problems we should consider fixing. He had quoted us last year but we were not ready to do the repairs. With the roof and skylights leaking this year we requested he do the job. The price increase was negligible. We were fortunate that a customer that same day postponed thier roofing job until later in the summer. Tom was able to have a crew come the very next day. He worked after normal hours to arrange for all the materials to arrive the next morning and they completed the job in 1 and1/2 days - everything including venting and the repair of the siding. The crew he sent worked diligently and professionally. Could not have asked for more respectful young men. We could not have been more pleased with the process and the results. Another local remodeling firm had also quoted us last year. They did not climb up on the roof and inspect it, did not look in the attic for additional problems, and did not know that the skylights were a standard size. Their quote was comparable but only included the roofing (no venting or viyl siding) and insistd the skylights were a custon size so there would be an additional cost (although we knew they were a standard size).

The Tops crew showed up on the first day but could not get started due to the weather. After waiting to see if the weather might clear, we mutually decided that waiting is the best decision. A day later they got started and completely finished the upper roof that day. Another rain delay, and they were able to get started on the lower section of roof. All in all, it took about 3 days of working time. The crew never really slowed down even in the hot humid weather. They replaced a piece of fascia that had been torn off by the wind during last winter and matched the different roof levels between the main house and the five year old sunroom addition. The cleanup was excellent. With all the excess material, very few stray nails were found afterward. The only damage was a broken plastic window well cover that was replaced, no questions asked. The crew was polite and professional. The crew leader, Benny, knew his business and did a great job with his crew and interfacing with us. The roof has now been completed for about a month and everything is great. Our thanks to Tom Corey and his crew.

They did a nice job on the roof on the back building. I didn't have a issue with that part of the job. The snow breaks that they recommended were junk. They don't hold up to the snow we get in the area. After a month the snow break was all bent up and looked terrible on the front of the house. I called Tom and he came out promptly to replace. The second snow break was no better than the first. I called Tom back and he said he would stop by to look at the problem and come up with a solution to my problem. He never came back and never called. The snow break is still all bent up on the house and looks terrible. It has been 9 months since last contact and I assume Tom is just avoiding me at this point, I have left several messages with no response. I will need to hire someone to fix his awful work this spring. I would not recommend this company and it is to bad because they did a nice job on the roof but the customer service is terrible. If Tom would have followed up and fixed my problem or just told me he didn't have an answer the review would have been different. I hope that I don't have any problems with the roof in the future because I can't count on Tom to stand behind his work.

[Member names removed] were very nice people to work for. We did discuss the ice issue on the front of the house, as it is a gambrel style metal roof (an almost vertical slope) that gets the heaviest build-up of ice and snow on the east facing side. We replaced the steel ice/snow guards in the specific area that [Member name removed] is referring to, and apparently because of the inordinate build-up of ice/snow combined with the downward pressure of this style roof, the standard residential guards we installed simply won't hold up to the amount and weight of the ice and snow that falls on the lakeshore in this area. Another style of ice and snow break is warranted. I DID stop back out in the 3rd week of September (since we were doing another job in the area) to check out the second guards that we installed, and they were bent in the middle section of the front of the house. I agree that I erred in not finding yet another replacement more quickly. Winter came upon a little faster than expected, and I didn't communicate in a timely fashion with the [Members] to get this done when I said I would. I take full responsibility for that. No excuses. I do, however, stand behind, alongside, and in front of the work Tops Roofing & Remodeling Co. does, as. This isn't a workmanship issue. This is a product an issue, where a more substantial ice/snow guard is warranted. This particular ice/snow guard has worked on every other home on which we have installed it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that this is the case here. All of this said, I would be happy to install a different style ice/snow guard for the [Members] in hopes of solving this problem.

There were numerous leaks after the roof was installed. Tops roofing made some unsuccessful repairs and then said we would have to pay to repair it completely. There was to be an additional $1900 paid to fix the ice guard under the dormers. After that offer, I made numerous attempts to contact the owner and even sent a registered letter, all the communications were ignored. We finally had to place a complete new roof on the house. The new roofer said that the roofing tiles had been applied backwards on numerous parts of the roof.

Response from TOPS ROOFING & REMODELING CO
The contract was signed on 6/8/2005. The roof was installed during the 2nd week of August 2005. So, this job was not performed in June of 2006. The cost of the job originally quoted was $1736.00 to replace the shingles on the vertical (mansard) front section and adjacent porch roof, as these were the areas that [member name removed] was having problems with originally. After inspecting this section, and then the rest of the roof I noticed quite a bit of moss growth and build-up due to the high number of trees located around the home. So I brought this to the homeowner's attention. I then provided a quote for the entire roof as well. The amount for the entire roof was $7743.00. I was also asked to provide a quote for new gutters and gutter covers. This estimate came to $1156.00. The combined total of both jobs came to $8899.00. This is a very far cry from $14,000.00. Also discussed was a skylight on the back of the house over a patio room that was in deplorable condition. I recommended it be replaced but was rebuffed due to the cost (It was a very large skylight; approximately 6' in width by 3' in depth; a very expensive skylight to replace. Also notable was that the skylight was much wider than tall. Normally skylights are installed vertically on a roof). So we agreed to try and work with the original skylight and seal it up the best we could. When we did the installation of the roof, the front vertical (or mansard) section of the roof sheeting was rotted and in very poor condition. We pointed this out to [members' name removed] and informed them that it needed replaced, which would be done at an amount that was agreed upon prior to signing the contract (I always include the cost for wood replacement in my contracts so there are no surprises). The added cost for wood replacement, wood fascia replacement, and framing work required on all 3 dormers was $511.00 bringing the entire job cost total to $9410.00 ($4590.00 less than what [member name removed] claims to have paid). After the job was completed [member name removed] contacted me and informed me that the skylight was leaking. We did make several attempts to seal the skylight, but it continued to be problematic. One thing I did notice upon inspecting the skylight shortly after it leaked was an overabundance of leaves, debris such as twigs and sticks, and pine needles piled up against the top (or back) of the skylight that were clearly keeping water from flowing from out behind the top of the skylight as it should. As stated before, we were working with the original skylight. I recommended replacing the Skylight and gave [member name removed] a verbal quote again, and once again she declined. As for the other issue with the roof, it was brought to my attention that the front vertical (mansard) section was 'leaking' during the winter. When I went to the [members' name removed] home the first thing I noticed was an incredibly thick wall of ice that formed over the entire section of the mansard roof area as well as the 3 dormers that were built into this same roof section. I questioned [member's name removed] as to whether or not she had ever had the insulation checked for density since the home was getting close to 30 years old. It was clear that ice dams were occurring and water was forcing its way up under the shingles and onto the roof deck. Since the roof has a low slope upper eave, 3 dormer windows cut into the mansard roof section on the front, and an opposing lower front angle over the front porch, there are many areas where water could easily be trapped behind an ice dam, thus causing what would appear to be a leak. As for [member's name removed] claim that I was trying to charge her $1900.00 to 'fix the ice guard under the dormers' this is false. First, there was ice guard installed along the eaves, and extended up onto the vertical (mansard) roof on the front, including around the dormer windows. Upon [member's name removed] insistence that the roof was 'leaking' and unwillingness to explore the possibility of poor insulation, I informed her that if she wanted, we would remove the shingles in the area of question, to ensure that the installation was performed properly, and replace everything including installing new siding and fascia on the dormers, since this would now be the 3rd time the dormer siding, fascia, and flashings would be installed (original when built, when we replaced the roof, and if she opted to open it up again). But, I did tell her that since the original job did not include replacing all of the metal on the dormers that she would be responsible for that cost which would be approximately $1900.00 As for another roofer finding shingles applied backwards on her roof, I'm not even sure how this would be possible. If, by backwards, they are referring to the 'starter' shingles which are placed around the entire perimeter of the roof an inverted fashion prior to installing the shingles then yes, I guess they were 'backwards'. We, admittedly, did have leakage issues with a skylight that was more than 20 years old to begin with. Unfortunately, our customer opted not once, but twice not to replace it. As for 'leakage' that only occurs when snow is melting on your roof (and not when it's raining), that is a sure sign of poor insulation causing ice damming. The sad part of this is that I think [member's name removed] is basically a nice person. And since we went to the [members' name removed] home on several occasions (no fewer than 4) , I feel we were willing to do our part to help rectify the problem. But to submit information that is blatantly false is simply the wrong thing to do. 1-We didn't charge $14,000.00 to install this roof. 2-We recommended replacing a skylight that was in need of replacing. 3-I proposed finding out about the insulation levels to help keep the ice dams from forming which I'm quite certain would have fixed the problem. 4-I went to [members' name removed] no fewer than 4 times to either address these issues, or talk about solutions to the real problems they were having. All of this said, I am sorry that [member's name removed] feels this way about Tops Roofing & Remodeling Co. We have always taken great pride in serving our customers with unparalleled quality and service.

These guys rock!! If you are getting a new roof call Tops Roofing. Tom Corey (owner) answered my initial call on the second ring. He was out 24 hours later to review the job and quoted me a price on the spot. He inspected my attic and informed me that while the house was really well built (circa 1946) he would have to put extra plywood on to do a proper job. (At our last house we got low-balled and then when the pulled the old roof off told us we needed plywood at a substantial up-charge = BEWARE the tactic!). I am I Logistician by profession and I have never seen a crew like Tops come in and perform work as they did. From the dumpster arriving on the first day at 7:01 am to the shingle truck arriving the new day at 7:02. I have never seen crews work so hard. All their equipment first rate... with a beautiful job trailer. We had a back roof that needed serious attention and Tom and his crew did a beautiful job on building us a new design. I estimated a week to do the job and they were done in 2 days!! As I mentioned.... I never seen a more professional and hard working crew. Tom visited the site on both days. We had some chimney work to do and they handled that beautifully. I am getting ready to go on a military deployment and I know Tom bumped us up to make sure I saw the job before I went. The only little issue.... was that the gutters were full of construction materials and I am glad I discovered that before heavy rains occurred. Other than that one item this company did a fantastic job and I would give them my highest recommendation!

The roof shingles on our house were original from the time of construction (circa 1958). As such, the shingles were showing their age, the paint on eaves and fascia boards were peeling, and the metal gutters and downspouts were rusted badly. Not having any experience with local contractors, we consulted with our neighbors and Angie's List for recommendations. We contacted several companies, but were most impressed with Tom Corey when he came to give us an estimate. After he examined the conditions, we spent time discussing various materials and installation details. We were impressed with his down to earth presentation and when he proposed a price for the work, we agreed without hesitation. Tom indicated that he was pretty well booked (as of contract date of 9/27/13), but set a tentative start date of 11/18/13 (weather permitting). He added a clause to his contract that if weather interfered and our job had to be put off until the Spring of 2014 it would be done at the same price. After receiving several days notice, our project was started on Wednesday, 11/20/2013 and completed and totally cleaned up on Tuesday, 11/26/2013. The crew from Tops couldn't have been more professional from start to finish. We were happy to pay our bill on 11/27/2013 having received everything promised and then some. We highly recommend Tom and his company.

Had to reschedule original date, due to mother nature, which did not bother me at all. Came on date rescheduled, hottest day in September...when I got home from work, roof was almost complete. All items around the house, i.e., deck furniture, flower pots, were removed prior to beginning the process of tearing off the roof; all items replaced at the end of the day. All areas around the house were cleaned up of debris. The guys worked until the roof was done, despite the heat! Came the following day to remove and replace gutters...everything was gone (dumpster and work trailer) by the time I returned home from work. Everything looks great. Tom (owner) was very professional from time of estimate to time of completion. His crew worked hard and long. Was very impressed from start to finish. Would I hire them again? Am already making plans for window and door replacement next spring!!!

The crew arrived monday morning and after getting unloaded it started raining. They did not want to tear off the roof in the rain. They came back early the next morning and worked untill after 7pm to make sure all the sheeting and underlayment was on just in case it rained that night. They also cleaned up around the entire house before leaving. On wednesday they came back early and worked untill it was dark trying to finish. Also cleaning up around the house before leaving. Even though they were starting another job on thursday the crew leader came back with one other to finish the job and address any concerns I had. When Tom came out to do the original estimate, he was one of 2 people to climb on the roof and look at what was on the roof. He took them time to come back a second time to explain everything to my wife. Toms price was not the lowest but it wasnt the highest. He would not take a deposit before starting the work. His answer was "You dont pay untill you are satisfied" Tom made me feel comfortable that the work going to be done would be done right and to a high standard. I was not disapointed and would hire Tops again in the future.

The crew arrived early on the Monday the week work was to begin and finished completely by Friday of that week. At some points they had as many as nine workers on the site. The workers were skilled and competent. I was kept updated as the work progressed. My wife and I could not be more pleased with the way the job was handled, the workers involved, or the end results of the project.
Description of Work: Tops replaced the main roof, breezeway roof and garage roof, removed and replaced damaged portions of the structure, replaced the soffit and fascia on the entire structure and installed new gutters and downspouts all around.
