Stump's Decks and Porches

Project went great. Mark put together a great design and everyone was responsive and professional. I had gotten 3 quotes and they were mid-priced, though nit too far from the lower bid. I highly recommend them. We've had the deck for about 8months now & it still looks perfect!

It went great. The guys worked hard and the deck was built within 2.5 days, which I was shocked at. All through the design and negotiations process, our project manager, Mark, was great to work with. He helped us design the deck we wanted, gave us additional ideas, and worked within our price range. All responses from Mark were very timely and he was always easy to get in contact with via email or phone.

Damp/wet in a small space under porch. In cellar. Mike, the owner, fulfilled everything as stated. I, initially, thought the bill was high. Only for a moment, until I considered time for 2 men, materials, big truck with tools, trailer with materials and many more business expenses. About 3 hours to repair warped/twisted plastic deck boards. It's been 3 months and problem has been cured effectively. No longer damp in that area after much precipitation hitting the porch deck.

The process for selecting the materials and colors went well. Once the project had been scheduled, things took off. The folks arrived to tear down the old deck and put in the footers for the new deck within the first two days. Start to finish, the entire project probably took about 5 days total. The deck was beautiful and it turned out just as we expected. After the deck had been in place for about two months we noticed that the Trex rails appeared to not have enough support. I contacted Tim and Mike took care of the problem. There are times when I sometimes feel I paid too much for something to get done, but in this case I feel like we got a quality product for a fair price. I also felt very comfortable working with Tim and Mike and feel that they honestly want to do the best they can for the customer. It was a great experience!

Best contractor I've ever hired, hands down. Mark, the sales rep was punctual, honest and professional. If I would email him a design tweak, he would reply often within hours with a new drawing, provide firm detailed pricing revisions (no "that might run ya a little more..."; he would send the price change down to the penny, and you could count on it). It was a delight to witness them work. Crew of 3 for a 400sq ft deck. Demo and excavation on day 1, fully finished product in 5 business days. Precision work, every cut was perfect the first time. I was half convinced they could read each other's minds, like watching a ballet (uh, with power tools). Any unforeseen circumstances or alterations were handled promptly and cheerfully. I didn't like how one of the water drains was placed, so Gary (the job foreman) pulled it up, cut new boards and within 30 min the drain was the way I wanted it. Somehow, the load of stone for under the deck was missed on the manifest. No problem. They didn't miss a beat; called for the truck, kept going with the framing. When truck arrived, they decided it would damage the lawn to pull in the back to dump, so they layed out a plywood "road? and literally attacked it with shovels and wheelbarrows, did it all by hand. An hour and a half after the problem was discovered, a dumptruck's worth of stone was down, problem solved. Most contractors might have called it a day at 9 am while the excavators came back with stone. Stump?s crew had all the framing up instead by day 1. Great work ethic, honest, fantastic workmanship. I don't think you could do better. Their price came down in the middle of my estimates, but after seeing the work, it was very fair. Final product exceeded my expectations.

The Service person (Mark) was very nice and professional. I was looking for a covered (cement) porch for the front of my house which was not really what they do. Their designs were okay but I porbably could have done the same with Sketch-up. This offer didn't really turn out to be what I was looking for.

Stumps is a great company to work with. They do quality work and strive for perfection. They stand behind every inch of the job and don't quit till the customer is satisfied. They are very neat and clean about the pemises and very non intrusive. They do whatever it takes to get the job done expediently and of high quality. Gary, Mike, and the whole team are in my opinion are the best in the business.

The guys at Stump's were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. They quickly responded to my email inquiry, and were honest about the lag time in scheduling an estimate (one month) and to beginning the project (additional 8 weeks), so I could plan accordingly. The salesman (I forgot his name) was very professional and worked to meet my needs without trying to upsell at all. My contact person between the estimate and the project starting (Nat) was very responsive and helpful in negotiating some unexpected permit variance issues in my municipality. The guys who did the actual building of the deck did a fantastic job. They started and finished when they said they would (minus a few missed days because of severe rain/wind) and left me a beautiful, sturdy deck that has gotten me many compliments from my neighbors already! Best of all, my 2-year-old son LOVES the (gated) deck and I can let him run around on it knowing that he is safe.

I had an older deck that needed reinforcement and new deck boards. The estimate and assessment of the work needed was honest and fair--no upsell, but honest about the condition. The crew were polite, professional and fast. Despite additional work being done that made it take 2 days instead of the estimated 1, they stuck to the original estimate. When it comes time to replace this deck completely in a few years, I won't hesitate to use them again.

I called them on Tuesday, and got their voicemail. I left a message, with the job I wanted to do, and my contact information and requested a call back. This is the third day and yet they have called back. Probably the job I want to do (an open porch and expand my current deck is too small that they do not want to pick it up). Update on 8/19: They called me about 3 hours after I gave them an F rating on Angie's List. The guy called me back did not have a friendly tone. I was told that the earliest time they can come for an estimate is some time in September and the earliest time the job can be started is on October. They are just very very busy right now.

They submitted all the blueprints for the new deck to the township to get the permit. They removed the old deck on Saturday and started the new deck on Monday. It rained on Tuesday so they finished it on Wednesday. I now have a beautiful deck that conforms to all township regulations. During installation my outside light was damaged and was immediately replaced by Stumps that evening. I would highly recommend their services.

this was my first time using Angie's List and this was the best contractor experience I have had. I interviewed three companies. I liked all three, but Stumps gave me the best price and the most advice, so I went with them. I had a tricky design because I had bay window, an outlet and a ground level patio that limited the placement and size of the deck. Mark did a very good job of listening to my objectives and recommending a solution that worked well for the space. They were scheduling ~6 weeks out when I signed my contract, which I knew, but they stuck to the schedule they committed to. The workers showed up on time and did a great job. the deck looks fantastic and i am really happy - strongly recommend them to anyone looking to build a deck, as long as you don't need it done immediately.

We found Stumps to be professional, honest and courteous. We requested an estimate for a porch, at the time they were extremely busy and backed up with work. They conveyed a time table to schedule estimate and possible start date of any work right up front. . The estimate time was scheduled, and they were right on time. We had to postpone our plans until a later time, so we didn't use their services, HOWEVER, Stumps would receive my first consideration in the future when we go ahead with our project. THEY ARE A COURTEOUS, PROMPT, HONEST, AND PROFESSIONAL BUSINESS.

Mark arrived, he was very professional, gave him the ideas we wanted in a deck. Mark sent the 3D plans to us via email within a week. We where very satisfied with the work performed. We are not ready to have the deck built at this time however when that time comes Stumps will definitely be given the opportunity to perform the work.

An email request was sent to schedule an estimate, but did not receive any reply.

These guys are great! I needed a ramp built onto my deck before my future wife arrived from England. The township was finicky about the permits but Stump creatively adjusted the project plans to make it all work. Because of the township, they had to scramble but were able to complete the work just in time for my bride's arrival. We would use them again in a heartbeat.

UPDATE: Mark called me today after reading my review stating that I did not receive an estimate. He said he emailed me an estimate on 4/15/13. I told him I would check my "Junk" folder when I got home. Gee, am I embarrassed! There was an estimate from Stumps on 4/15/13 that apparently landed in my Junk folder. I apologize for my error. Lack of an estimate was the only issue I had with Stumps.

If you are looking to build a deck I strongly recommend going with Stump's. My wife and I thoroughly researched different companies and were constantly disappointed with the prices we got back. Finally, we happened upon Stump's on Angie's List and were pleasantly surprised when they came back with their estimate. I worked with Mark Bankston on some of the particulars of our deck---my wife and I wanted to build a bar/table area that would extend 9' in length leaving room to put our grill in the corner. He was very easy going and accomodated our every need including using hidden fastners and using 2 x 12's. The lead time was only a few weeks, which I imagine can differ depending on the season, and they indicated the project would take a day or two. The guys showed up the day and time they said they would and set to work digging the post holes by hand. Although using machines may have been quicker I think my wife and I appreciated the hardwork they put into our project. The workers were very professional and courteous the whole time and worker with my wife and I on issues encountered during building. For instance, we had an electrical outlet where the edge of our deck would be running. The foreman Brendon notified us of the problem, he was worried there may not be enough support for the edge of the deck, and offered us some solutions. In the end we extended the deck out by a foot from the original plans but we appreciated Brendon showing concern over the stability of our deck. The project took a total of two and a half working days--which was a bit longer than what was indicated but much shorter than what we expected so it was really a non-issue. The extra half day was more about doing odds and ends on the deck---installing a piece of lattice, swapping out a board, etc---as well as fixing the bar/table area that my wife and I had wanted. The workers had initially installed the bar area not to our liking, we had worked with Mark on a custom design which would look more like their benches vice their typical bars. I relayed my dismay to Mike Stoltzfus, the PM, and he ensured me that it would look exactly like we had envisioned. And he was right! Overall, the deck looks and feels great. I have no complaints and the final invoice is exactly as they said it would be---no surprises! Our neighbors have constantly been complimenting us on the deck and a few have already scheduled quotes from Stump's. I cannot be more pleased with Stump's and would recommend them to anyone who asked. Do yourself a favor and go with Stump's, you will not be disappointed.

We are very happy with the work that Stumps has done for us, and with the professionalism of Dean, Micah, and their crew. We originally brought them in to build a scond deck for us, and were so happy with the experience and quality that we subsequently brought them back for several more projects, including rebuilding the original deck that the builder had installed when our home was built. They are quick, clean, and genuinely nice people to deal with. We highly recommend them for any outdoor decking projects.

I contacted Stump's after being given two outrageous quotes from other companies that frankly were a depressing start to the project. The first man I spoke with at Stump's gave me a ballpark quote based on what we wanted that was much more realistic, and very close to the final cost we paid. Within a few days, another gentleman was sent out to our house. The man that came out to take measurements and talk to us about what we wanted specifically was very knowledgeable and helpful - our friend with deck-building experience came over as well to make sure everything was legit and was what we were looking for. He had samples of the Azek materials and colors, as well as literature to leave with us so we could make the best choices for our family. He was a pleasure to work with. Within a few days, he had drawn up the plans and emailed them to us with the cost breakdown. They were very busy when we contacted them and on through the summer, so our deck wasn't constructed until August. We would have liked it to happen sooner, but a busy company is usually busy because they're good, so we were content to wait. It only took them two days to complete the deck and pergola, including getting rid of the steps that were attached to our house, putting in footers, building new stairs, etc. I think there were 4-5 guys here both days. When they were finished, one of the builders told me how to clean and care for the deck, then he power-washed the whole thing. Final product is great.

The crew was very professional from start to finish. Prior to the start of the job, the design plans were very specific and were made to our specifications and wishes. They were very quick to get back to us, answered all our questions and helped modify plans to meet our needs as a family. The tear down and digging of the footers took one day. The worksite was left very neat (no nails, lumber, etc.). The building of our deck took only 1 1/2 days and the crew did an amazing job. They made a deck for us that not only is beautiful, but the craftsmanship cannot be matched by any other company. Stump's did our neighbor's deck, we saw their work and knew that we wanted them to ours as well. We didn't even bother getting any other estimates, because their work is that good! We now have a place that our family can enjoy (even putting a gate on the top platform to keep our children safe). We 100% recommend Stump's Quality Decks and Porches.
