About us
Gray Construction was established in February of 1988. The company was started with only a vision and a few hand tools. One of those tools was an old sledgehammer that was passed down by my great grandfather. He used that sledgehammer to drive railroad spikes into wooden sleepers during railroad construction. And in our humble beginnings we used that same sledgehammer to break up concrete. Today we use jack hammers with pneumatic concrete breakers on the machines. We have come a long way. Kent and his crew were wonderful to work with. Kent is very responsive throughout the process, from coming to our home, providing us a quote and answering all my questions. His website is wonderful and he even has a video regarding the whole stamp concrete process. The Gray Construction crew worked hard and were very tidy when the job was completed. Had 4 contractors come out. Kent was very enthusiastic and had a eye for design. we were adding quite a bit to our pool area patio along with a walkway and grill area patio. We needed an 18 inch at its highest retaining wall added also. The other bids were similar to Kents but they wanted to use a block retaining wall which was more expensive. plus I liked the curb Idea. They came when promised but a couple of things the first day had me going HMMM. First i have a two wood steps 6 feet wide coming off my deck We were eliminating one step by bringing the concrete up to the height equal to the top of the lower step. This gave me a nice border along the walkway and patio in which to contain my mulch. His plan was to leave the bottom step in and concrete around it. HUH? Meaning the step and the concrete would be level with each other but leaving the wooden step in place and, at least the three sides of it ( front left and right), in direct contact with the concrete. essentially buried up to the top in concrete. I could imagine it would only take a few years to rot then what would i do? build a new step inside the hole. I told him that will 1) look terrible and 2) be impractical. The day of the pour the step was still there. thank god i was home. i had to halt work and the crew stood there and watched as I removed the step myself. Second mistake was they dug right through my gas line. granted it was higher in the ground than it should have been but lets work together to get it fixed. Not just turn it off and go over it. I should also add that I had the front walk scheduled to be done also but he wanted to skim coat my concrete front porch with 2 inches of stamped and bury the bottom of my porch posts in the concrete HUH? I said no to that. I did throw him a curve ball by asking for four footers to be dug and filled because we decided to install a pavilion. I mark where they would need to be and they were off by 1 foot or so after charging $1000 for the 4 footers Everything was layed out and prepped by the third day. The area was 30 feet by 20 feet and it butted up to another 30' wide patio. They were totally different patterns which was okay with me i just want a 1 foot wide transition design that was different from both. A different stamped pattern . It is not uncommon but was met with hesitation. It ended up being just an indention line one foot inside the new concrete. Then they weren't going to put any kind of fabric and stone behind the curb so the water would have a place to go. Without it the curbing in winter would have surely pushed in. The patio itself should of had at least two drains in it. The next day they poured and i expected the drains to be put in as asked yet when I came home from work there were none. This giant slab of patio with an attached curb on three side and the water had no where to go. It is a giant bath tub after a storm. it isn't sloped properly so the water pools along the curb. i have to either suck it up with a shop vac or blow it. I was home by the time they were stamping it. Already I knew that the concrete, was wrong color. I wanted a darker richer color and this was hardly even beige. but it was down already so there was not much we could do about that. Kent said we will use darker release This is the powder they put down on the concrete that adds some color but its main job is to allow the stamp mats to lift off the concrete easily without getting stuck. Rght out of the shoot I almost was ready to blow my stack. His one worker covered the whole patio with PINK release then they stamped it. I now had a $15,000 pink patio. !!!! it was labeled rose, but not the walnut color I was going for. I stopped him as soon as I could. Now what do we do. well Their answer was to Put the walnut powder right over top of the pink. typically what happens is, the day after it drys you are supposed to blow off the powder and spray the sealer. they did the blow off but it was still pink. I was still unhappy with the color so Kents solution was to put walnut powder down and not blow it off and seal overtop of it. Don't worry it will look great. Well it looked good but not great. and after only a week or two it the sealer started to come off leaving pink spots all over. see the sealer is supposed to adhere to the concrete. With the walnut powder on it the sealer in many areas never penetrated to the concrete so it just dried on top of the powder release. which by its name "release" performed its job perfectly it released from the concrete leaving bare pink concrete all over. I get kent over and show him and he starts blaming the concrete manufacturer. Well I don't care fix it. he says we will have to remove all the sealer and that is a really hard job. "I don't care" i said "get it done". Well i waited and waited. he came over after work one night 7 weeks later weeks later, by himself and got about ten feet of a sidewalk done on his own in 3 hours. i realized after googling it and watching him it was indeed going to be a hard job. I came up with a great method though. Basically he was putting down stripper waiting a few minutes then using rag after rag to scrub it off. i was doing the same but found that the sealer and the stripper would harden pretty quick you didn't get much work time. one time i left a rag wet on the pavement and when i came back it was dry and stuck. My wife is a body waxer for a living so i did what she did and ripped it off fast. low and behold without any scrubbing at all the sealer and the walnut powder came up at the same time. AHA! Now i had the brain storm. i played full size bed sheets down and using a sprayer i saturated them with stripper. I kept adding more so it wouldn't dry to fast and not penetrate all of it when it dried. i would wait 30-45 minutes till it dried and BAM! the stripper and walnut powder came up in one shot. I ended up doing the whole patio myself. Kent never showed back up to help. now came the time to reseal but i still did not want a pink patio. Kent brought over some sealer dye and said we mix this in the sealer and you get the color you want. great. I should have mentioned earlier that the put the non slip powder down by throwing it by hand instead of mixing it with the sealer the first tim and i had numerous people fall between the initial job and me stripping it. so anyway we get the whole this sprayed and stained and for my trouble i ask for my older concrete around the pool to be stained and sealed at the same time so the colors match. Kent agrees and he and his worker have at it. i was very impressed with the turnout. it looked great. i was like thanks kent. he is like you owe me $2000 for the job. HUH? what??? you have to be kidding. he says no you used 4 five gallon pails of my stripper plus i have to pay my worker. I said you can cover that yourself. Me not being the arguer I should be, end up giving him something. he asked that i post a good review on angles list. I have now waited a year to see how the "fix" has worked. And it is peeling again. walnut with pink spots.. i had my front walk done last year and didn't use him and will never again. Great guy personable, creative. But he doesn't know the craft like others that have years and years of experience. t

Kent came out and took a look at what we were interested in doing, gave us some ideas and feedback and an estimate for what we decided to do. He worked with our unstructured schedule as we coordinated getting the other trades on board and patiently waited for us to get our permit. When we had questions or concerns he answered us in a timely and informative matter and helped us find solutions to a couple tricky details. The work was done efficiently and we are very pleased with the end result. He treated us with respect and courtesy and our project with importance. We would certainly use him again in the future and have already recommended him to several people we know.
Description of Work: Poured reinforced concrete pad for hot tub.
We were so pleased with this company. Mr. Gray came out to our home within a few days of calling. He was very knowledgeable and gave thorough information to help us choose the best product for our needs. He had very positive things to say about his company's reputation and we found them all to be true. His plan included grading for the new patio so we could eliminate the need for our antiquated drain system (another company we talked to were going to charge us to redo the drain, he let us know it wasn't needed and actually better for the house to grade everything away). Installation went well, the product is absolutely beautiful, and they returned a few days later to cut a notch out when we realized our new fence post needed a different spot than originally thought. We will use them again when we decide to do our front and side walks. Great experience, highly recommend!

Kent Gray and Gray Construction did an incredible job on our pool deck. Our 1970s pool with original pool deck underwent a full renovation and we couldn?t be happier. Our job consisted of removing the existing concrete pool deck, excavating the perimeter to increase the size, installing additional ¾ stone base, forming and laying rebar in addition to wire mesh, bonding (grounding) all metal surrounding the pool, and pouring new concrete with a broom finish. From day one Kent made things very easy and seamless for us. He promptly came out to estimate the job and followed up with multiple phone calls to determine what we were looking to complete. At the bottom of a steep hill our pool location made it difficult to remove the existing deck and pour a new one but Kent and his guys were up for it. Kent was very up front with all of the different aspects of our job and communicated very well on when and what was being done. The job was broken up into three different days over a month and a half due to the pool renovation progressing during the same timeframe. This added a bit of difficulty to the logistics but Kent was happy to work through it with us and our pool contractor. If you?re looking for a concrete contractor Kent and his guys are the way to go. His prices are fair, the work is done to the highest quality, and he?s involved throughout the entire process answering any questions or concerns along the way.

Excellent Company! Workers spent two days hand removing all existing concrete and setting in place forms for pouring all the new concrete. On day three the new concrete was poured. The workers never stopped and completed the job on schedule. They were careful and kept us informed of any issues along the way. Since this was the first time we ever had this type of work done, we relied on the recommendations of the company on the design of the replacement concrete and it turned out great. The back patio area design was done to create a very "inviting" living place. At the completion of the work, workers completely cleaned the project site and back filled in the areas next to the new concrete. Company owner contacted us at end of job to make sure we were satisfied with all of the work completed.

This was a big job from the start because my number on concern was getting the drainage right for both the back patio and the front walkway. Kent hit the mark and created a true piece of art work at the same time. The patio and walkway far exceeded my exceptions. The coloring and the finish are something that pavers can not match. I know that I must continue to seal the concret every few years to keep this finish but I think it is well worth it to have a "one of a kind " walk and patio. However, some of Kent's best work you will never see. It is the wire mesh, steal and four inches of packed crushed stone that the patio and walkway lay upon. This foundation ensures that the patio's structural integrity will last for a life time. This job was done correctly, in a timly fashion with no unforeseen issues. I give Kent my highest recomdation without any reservations.
Description of Work: Kent and his crew poured a 660sq ft back patio of stamped concret that was stained to match a specific color my wife picked out. Also, he poured a 340sq ft front stamped and stained concret walkway that was tied to the front concert entrance to my house. In addition, he put in french drains (around the patio and walkway) that were tied in with the existing gutter downspouts on the house and thhe regraded various elevations of my yard to ensure all water drainage would flow away from the house and into the french drains.

With the ten plus years I have in the construction business, I was totally impressed with the job Kent and his employees did from start to finish. He matched an existing stamp and color pattern perfectly. I prefer to do projects myself so if quality is subpar I have no one to blame, but this was out of my comfort zone and Kent Gray will do all my concrete work in the future. Very professional, yet very personable; treated our job as if it was his own. 100% satisfied!

He knew I wanted the job completed soon and he fit me in a week earlier than anticipated. The cement job they did is beautiful. They were on time, worked hard and kept the area very neat and tidy. The attention to detail is fantastic. I definitely recommend Kent and if I need any cement work in the future, I will be requesting his services again.

We are so happy we went with Gray Construction when looking to add a concrete patio to our backyard. Kent responded to our call for an estimate within hours and came over that evening to discuss the project. He provided us with a very quick and reasonable estimate. Kent and his crew were able to start the project within a few weeks (even earlier than expected) and were wonderful. They listened to what we wanted but also provided some great suggestions. Our yard has a steep incline and they came up with just the right plan to make the patio look amazing. We are thrilled with the results and will not hesitate to contact Kent about future projects.

I found Kent's company while searching Angie's List. I am so happy that we decided to go with Kent's company. A 10' 'x 20' pad and a pad in front of our cabana, that had been poured alongside the walkway to our pad around the pool, had sunk about 4 inches on the one end that butt up against the walkway. Kent told me he would be glad to give me an estimate, but said I should give a call to another company that pumps concrete into holes that are made in the existing pad that lifts up the pad to the correct height. He said it would be much cheaper and cost about half of what he would cost. Kent told me he would feel better if I got a second opinion. Are you kidding me? A company that is looking out for my best interest, rather than just looking to turn a buck. That really impressed me. It was determined the concrete pumping would not be an option. So, we went with Kent. The work was scheduled about a month out, but due to a change in his schedule, they were able to begin work about two weeks earlier. Kent's work crew showed up bright and early and went right to work. After tearing up the old pad, they took the time to explain to us why the pad had settled and what they were going to do to ensure that it doesn't happen in the future. They were able to tear out the old pad in one day. They shored up the area underneath the existing walkway around the pool by pushing crushed stone underneath to fill in the gap between the pad and the dirt. The crew was very friendly and courteous. The next day they had planned on pouring the new pad, but had to reschedule due to rain. They informed us they would be back the following Monday to finish the work. First thing Monday morning, there they were. When I got home from work the pad was all done and just looked amazing. Being that the sides were exposed, you could see how solid and hardy the concrete was. Kent said it was 4000 psi concrete. I don't know what that means, but it sounds heavy duty. The crew cleaned up very nicely following the work and even put the remaining crushed stone around my shed to fill in some exposed areas there. I am extremely impressed and pleased with the work performed by Kent's team. It is very rare to find a company with the integrity and honesty displayed by Kent's company. He truly is a good guy and I appreciate him for that! Thanks Kent!

Kent called within a few hours after I filled out the form on his website. He came out the following Monday, discussed our plans, and gave us an estimate the next morning. The estimate was very reasonable. As we thought more about the project, we adapted our design. Kent was more than willing to discuss changes and how it would impact his estimate. Ultimately, we went with a different contractor, but it was a difficult decision. I have little doubt that Kent and his crew would've done a fine job with our patio had we selected him.

Kent and his crew were extremely easy to work with. Throughout this week long project, they arrived at our house ready to go to work every day in a timely fashion. Their work ethic was excellent and they were very efficient. It was obvious that they all were well seasoned employees who worked well together as a unit. Kent Gray was always on site to patiently answer our questions and offer alternatives as we progressed through the various stages of our project. It is clear that Kent and his crew have many years experience in the field. The finished product met all of our expectations and was definitely worth every penny of the cost. We would definitely hire Gray Construction for other projects around our house and are currently awaiting a proposal from them for a retaining wall and stairs.

Kent saved my stamped patio. The patio was faded and needed sealer very badly. The company that originally poured and sealed my patio did a horrible job. Kent did a wonderful job. We are very please with the outcome of the basement floor. The work that Kent did personally is great. When they were grinding the floor, there was much more concrete dust than I was expecting. I wish I would have insisted on putting up tarp over the unfinished areas. It required a lot of clean up and it did come up through the ventilation system. We had the floor stained on a very cold day and needed to keep the heat on so that the pipes in our house wouldn't freeze. Kent was very upfront with the intensity of the smell throughout the house. We just made other arrangements and did not sleep in the house. Kent was very responsive, very honest and up front. He has communicated with us about every step of the process and fit us into his schedule in a way that met our needs. I am very happy with the service. I would recommend him again and would use him in the future.

Kent responded to me right away and immediately came up with a plan. The house had never had walkways installed up to the back or front doors. The main challenge (to me) was the fairly steep grade going up to both. Kent provided me with a drawing and talked over some ideas with me. He was good at keeping budget in mind along the way. Kent was always prompt at contacting me by email and phone to get this project going. It took a while to get this job in action because of the permits required by my township. They required so much information, but Kent helped me gather it. When we finally started Kent and his crew arrived on the date and time we set up. They got started right away and were finished in 3 or 4 days. The workers were always on time or early. They paid close attention to detail and really worked as a team. The whole job turned out better than expected. I would definitely use Kent and his crew again.
Description of Work: They installed a walkway of stairs from my driveway leading to the front door as well as one from the driveway leading to the back door. Removed two old retaining walls and placed both of them with retaining walls flanking the new front and back walkways. Poured a new patio on the front of the house at the top of the new front walkway.

My husband and I couldn't be more pleased with the work performed by Kent Gray and his team of skilled workers. Most rare in contractors, Kent communicated prompted and often with us about the job, which was particularly important because of some extreme incompetence by other contractors (not Gray Construction) involved with the project. Kent was courteous, professional, and very concerned that we ended up with a high quality job that met our needs and looked beautiful. His team are craftsmen. They were punctual, friendly, and answered all questions we had regarding the job. Early on, Kent saw that our job needed a french drain designed and installed, all with a goal of keeping the costs as fair to us as possible. Starting as a hired contractor, Kent ended up a friend who really looked out for us from a professional standpoint. Again, my husband and I have the highest regard for Gray Construction and will use them for all our future concrete needs. Plus we gladly recommend them to anyone who wants gorgeous concrete work done with excellence in all ways.

We had been considering patio options for about one year. We were debating paver vs stamped concrete. Last year we had a different stamped concrete company come out and we were not too happy with their design and didn't feel too comfortable with them. We found Gray Construction through Angie's List, went to his website, and liked his work. I contacted Kent on a Thursday or Friday and he told me that he could meet us on Saturday. I was blown away. Other companies that I had contacted over the previous year would set up appointments 2 weeks out. Kent showed up and we immediately knew that he was the right contractor for us. Everyone else had convinced us that we needed a retaining wall. Kent told us that we didn't need a retaining wall and showed us an option that we had not considered. He told us that he'd happily put in a retaining wall but didn't think it would look right and that it would be wasting money. We had also inquired about adding a walkway off of our patio. Once again, Kent explained that he would happily do it but saw a problem with water drainage that could cause a problem. No other companies even mentioned the drainage problem. The project involved a lot of labor and allowed no access to heavy equipment. Kent and his crew worked like horses and got the project done much quicker than we anticipated. Each day Kent explained what they were going to do, what the next step was, and asked if we had any questions or concerns. The 2 patios turned out incredible and we couldn't be happier. Gray Construction sets a standard that all companies should follow. We will have them back to do more work.
