They began the work by sanding the kithchen/living room area on a Thursday. They used wood filler on some imperfections in the floor, but not all of them. They came back Friday to re-sand and stain. They couldn't match the color to joining rooms exactly, but got close. Within a hour after applying the stain they had already applied the first coat of poly urethane, we asked if that was too soon but they said it was O.K. We kept the room sealed off and didn't look at it until the next day. We saw big areas that were much lighter in color. We called Jay. He came out too look at it, but said he was unsure if it was the stain or the way the polyurethane was absorbing into the wood. On Sunday one of his guys came out to buff the floor and put on a second coat of polyurethane. Once he started buffing it he stopped and said they would be back in a couple of days because they needed to re-sand everything down to bare wood again. After he left we walked around to take closer look at the whole floor and saw many imperfections in the job. There were swirls in the wood from staining over marks put in the wood with their circular sander, there were areas near the refrigerator that weren't ever sanded or stained, there was stain splashed on our cabinets and brick. After sleeping on it we called Jay again to let him know that we were unhappy and that we felt we needed to call someone else to re-do the whole job. He didn't even try to argue his case and say that they would fix it. He just said that he was sorry and that they rushed and the job got away from them - whatever that means. Luckily he didn't take a deposit up front and luckily they only worked on the one area. He has been in the business for a long-time, but obviously things have changed. We would not recommend or use again.
Description of Work: WE got a quote of around $4,000 to refinish hardwood floors in our kitchen/living room area, two sets of steps, and a couple of bedrooms.

I had gotten two quotes: East Penn and Jay's. Jays was $200 less so I went with them. They showed up as scheduled and were done as scheduled. The floor was covered with carpeting since the day it was installed (many years ago) and only needed a quick sanding coating. It was white oak. This was not told to the guys sanding the floor (floors are typically red oak) so they didn't have the correct color wood putty to fill the staple holes and cable wire hole, It could have matched better. I have two issue; the floor was basically new with no imperfections and smooth. There are now some wavy locations. More of an issue is that there are "dust" particles in the finish an it is not perfectly smooth. I pointed this out the the laborer and he said that there will always be dust in the air and you cant keep it from getting onto the finish. I don't know that this is correct as I've seen lots of other floors which are smooth. I believe part of the dust is from the gallon pail they use to poly the floor. They did not appear to filter it so what ever is in it from the last job(s) would get on my floor. I also had to have them come back to cover a spot which they had missed with the poly. they did this without complaint. I also read in other Angies List reviews that the estimator took the time to discuss different types of finishes. Not here. It wasn't until after the floor was finished that I found out that there are different tabes of poly finish. Also, after the floor was completed no one ever asked if I was satisfied. I didn't complain as its not worth my effort. Overall, you get what you pay for. I'm not super upset with their workmanship. If your looking for a basic economical finish then maybe Jays is the place. I think for my other rooms I'll try someone different.
