The overall experience was good except that we found their estimate 3 times more than another estimate for similar work on installing a new furnace. The estimate we received was for 14,000 but we were able to get the work done from another company for 4,000

They sent a service tech to my home in request to bleed my radiators. I assumed this was a very simple non technical task. After just a short 2 hr visit the radiators were bled and at that point I was told 2 out of my 3 thermostats needed to be replaced. So I figured go ahead and do it since they were here. I was was never given a price(assuming they couldn't cost much and only took a minute each to install) then I was surprised with a bill for $1350 that is outrageous for a few hours and 2 thermostats that cost under $80 each at home depot. I feel very deceived and disappointed with the whole situation. The items installed aren't even working just a few short weeks after being installed. I have them set at 62 inside temp is between 68 and 70 yet the heater is still turning on. Total disaster!!! I later learned from several other companies that I spoke with that this same task could have been performed for less than 1/3 of what Horizon charged my family. :(

It was a huge job and was going to require us to be without water for several days. The technicians worked on one section at time so that during the entire job, we had water in selected parts of the house. It made the intall more difficult for the plumbers but more convinient for us. I was completely satisfied with all of their work and could not be happier with the choice we made in going with Horizon. I highly recommend them to anyone.

Something clogged my main drain line so I called Horizon since they advertise a $99 flat rate fee "no matter what it takes". This was very competitive so I asked them to come over and take care of the problem. They came on the same day so I have no issues with that. However, after the technician took a (very) quick look at the plumbing, he said he couldn't help me and he pretty much packed up and left me hanging there! He said he couldn't snake inside a line that is full of water! HUH?! The line is full of water because it's blocked, hello? I told him it didn't make sense at all, to which he responded that Horizon's policy is to not snake from above a clog, only from below (from the street), because that's a straight run and there is less risk of getting stuck with the snake. In order to get a straight run from above, he would have had to unscrew a cap somewhere down the line, and since the line is full he didn't want to do this. He said there were "liability issues" in doing this. Apparently he didn't hear of a water pump or a siphon. He didn't want to run the snake from the street either because it's too far from the house! Bottom line this is your typical bait & switch company, they advertise a cheap price but they honor it only for jobs your granny could perform. I then called a local company and they came right away and did it from above the clog, it took them 5 minutes, and the snake didn't get trapped anywhere because guess what, they know their job unlike Horizon!!! UPDATE: The company has called me and apologized about the issue. They didn't explain the reason why service was refused in the first place, however they added a credit to my account for a free drain cleaning should I need to in the future. Nothing in writing, but I'm planning on taking advantage of this. Thank you. UPDATE 2: Sure enough I experienced another clog in a different part of my house. So I called Horizon to cash in on the free drain cleaning and I'm happy to report that they performed the job as expected, at no charge. Because I'm pleased with the way they corrected the initial complain, I'm removing the bad rating.

The first guy came and fixed our toilet. Both guys were punctual, asked what the problem was, showed you what was wrong. They weren't cheap. At the end of the first visit he fixed everything but did not fix the handle. Came back and fixed it very quickly. He stayed around to make sure everything was going to work right. When I started to work on my wives they had to order the part, before we left they called right away and said they would come out and fix it right away. I have to say that I am completely satisfied with them. We took one look at the heater and said ok and we getting a new heat pump, and I don't know if I saw them in the paper, they sent a team out at no charge to look at it. When they come to do the annual inspection they put in a very nice filter and gave me an extra year of free service because they put in the wrong fuse. They have never left me hanging. They always come back, and don't get charge for another service charge.

I found them on an advertisement in the newspaper. The bill was $79.00, but I had some discount coupons. I went with them because of the discount coupon in the paper and I have seen their truck in the neighborhood before so some other residents had used them and I heard no complaints. They set up a time window and they stuck to it. Actually they were 15 minutes late, but the driver or the repairman called me in advance and told me that the job he was currently on was taking a little bit longer than he expected and that he would be here within 15 minutes so that was good news. He said they hadn't forgotten me and they were on their way. They work 24/7 so if your furnace or whatever goes out in the night and it is freezing cold outside, they will come out and fix it but I have a contract for the furnace with another company. It's hard to say anything about the price since they are the only ones I ever called and I tried to fix the toilet myself and it didn't work. They guarantee for 90 days.
Description of Work: Horizon Services replaced the toilet flapper in the toilet tank for me. Their headquarters are in Wilmington, but they have a New Castle County office which is where I am at.

Michael Fondi, HVAC Specialist arrived at our home on time for a seasonal tune up of heater and humidifier. He immediately impressed my husband and me with his courtesy and professional appearance. He did the routine service on the heater, etc. and taught us a few things about preventive maintenance that we never knew about the runoff drain from the heater/ac and humidifier. He instructed us on how to clean the runoff container with white vinegar every couple of months to prevent clogging and build up. I have numerous allergies and asked if the filters we were using were adequate. He mentioned that there are electrostatic filters available that some of his clients have had installed and they seem happy with them. He didn't try to sell one to us - no pressure at all. He had one on his truck and offered to show it to us and explain how it worked - we liked the idea and asked him to install it which he did. It was pricey but he told us about a coupon for $ 47.50 which we used.

The mark of an excellent company is not how what they do when everything goes right, but how they respond when things go badly. Because of this, I can only give Horizon excellent marks. Our first experience was on 9/26 when our air conditioner quit working. Since we had worked with Horizon previously on a heating issue, we called them again. The phone staff were pleasant and professional and we received a service appointment for later in the day. The technician arrived as scheduled, worked quickly to identify our problem (a leaking evaporator coil) and offered several solutions to us including replacing the existing unit, recharging the existing unit temporarily, or replacing the 15 year old unit. Our solution was to temporarily recharge the unit and seek quotes from companies to install a new unit. We agreed to meet with a salesperson the following day to discuss our options. We were very pleased with the work the technician did. On 9/27, a salesperson who I will not identify arrived at our home. Although he was pleasant, he immediately began to pressure us to sign a contract that night, offering us deals that he said "you will never see again". We were stunned at the level of pressure this man exhibited. When we refused to think about financing, he pressured us. When we explained that we wanted quotes from other companies, he pressured us. When we told him that we needed to have our roof repaired first (after all, this was the end of September - long after the cooling season!) he pressured us. He kept lowering his price, asking "what price would it take for you to sign today?" It was terribly unprofessional and rude. When we finally convinced him we were not interested, he asked several inappropriate questions, including questions about our roof (?) and finally left in a huff, sitting in his car for at least 15 minutes outside of our home, which was quite frankly just creepy. After that experience, we vowed never to use Horizon again, put our review on Angie's List, and didn't think much about it again. The day after the sales visit, we received a phone call from someone who was following up to find out how our experience was and I flat-out told them that we did not want this high-pressure individual in our home again and that we would never, ever use Horizon Services. Less than a week later, we were contacted by a sales manager. We were stunned. He assured us that this salesperson had been disciplined and that this was unequivocally NOT how Horizon trains their employees to act. He apologized and asked if he could personally visit my home and review options. He promised an EXTREMELY GENEROUS offer on a new air conditioner and stated that he was only interested in earning my business back. He was very genuine. We were a bit skeptical, but agreed to meet with him. A few days later, the sales manager arrived with another gentleman. They were well dressed, professional, and very forthright. They showed me a copy of the salesman's disciplinary action to prove that he had, in fact, been disciplined. He reiterated numerous times that this is simply not how they train their employees to behave and that the owners of the company were informed of this unsatisfactory outcome. He looked at our air conditioner and agreed that it needed replaced. He also looked at our hot water tank and some ancillary equipment in our basement and commented on those as well. He never tried to sell me a thing. His only goal appeared to be my satisfaction. He brought literature about the air conditioning unit that he wanted to install, if we agreed. I will say that Horizon unequivocally LOST MONEY in the transaction with us, but they seemed willing - almost eager! - to do so in order to satisfy me. That is quintessential customer service. So often, we hear that companies have a "100% customer service guarantee" but do you really believe it? I don't. This company is the exception to that rule. We agreed to have Horizon perform the services we discussed. In under 24 hours, a friendly and skilled crew arrived at my door. They worked quickly and professionally. They took care of my home and didn't leave a mark or a scratch. I could not have been more impressed with the workmanship and professional service. Horizon is not the cheapest company to work with. There is no doubt about this. But, as you consider companies to use, you must ask yourself: Will the company warranty the workmanship? Will the company be there in the future to support that warranty? Finally, does this company actually CARE about you as a customer? This company does. "Cheapest" is not always "best' and we believe this very sincerely. After today, I must give high praise to Horizon's customer service philosophy. They are willing to go a great distance in our case to make this situation right, and (price aside) we have NEVER received such personalized attention and customer care.
Description of Work: Service call to diagnose a problem with our HVAC unit. Unit was temporarily recharged and we were told we needed a new unit. The next day, another salesperson came to our home to quote on a 4 ton replacement central air conditioner. After our situation, the company came to install a new air conditioning unit and a hot water heater.

They came on time with a crew of 3 men. They tore out the old vent stack, the boiler and all of the plumbing. They cleaned out the area and then ran new gas lines, installed the new boiler and ran all new plumbing associated with the house heating system (3 zone). They installed a new chimney liner and reworked the venting for our hot water heater. They ran new pvc to accommodate the new venting of the new boiler through the basement wall. This was finished outside with a cover for the intake and exhaust. They also rewired the area for the electrical system required for the new boiler. They bled the entire baseboard system and pressure tested the system before turning the water back on. They installed shut off and bleeding valves for each zone in the house. They also installed new programmable thermostats for each zone. When finished the explained the system to me and cleaned up the house. They removed all the drop cloths and protective carpet they laid down to protect the house. The entire process took 13+ hours to complete. I was told at the time of sale they would install the entire new system in 1 day.
Description of Work: Had a completely new heater (boiler) installed in our house, replacing the old boiler. They tore out the old boiler and the associated pipes and installed a new boiler which include reworking the gas line, electrical and vent stack for a 3 zone unit. They also installed new piping and valves for the entire system.

I had been pricing replacement units for a while because of the age of my current unit so I knew the approximate cost should be. I received quotes from 5 other companies and all were between $2,500 - $3,500 for a 2 ton condenser and coil. Horizon quoted me - $8,000, - $10,000!!! Ridiculous. I can't believe that there are people who actually are willing to pay that!
Description of Work: My central air died during a heat wave in July. Horizon was the only company that could come out that day. Unfortunately, the unit could not be repaired and total replacement was necessary.

My backup sump pump had failed when I tested it a couple days before Hurricane Irene was going to hit us. I called Horizon and was very specific in my request stating that I needed to replace the backup sump pump before the storm arrived. They assured me their trucks were fully stocked, but I asked again about the specific parts for a backup sump pump. They said yes, they carried backup sump pump parts. They were scheduled to arrive between 2 pm and 6 pm on that Friday. The office had called around 4 looking for the technician, but mistakenly called me when they realized he was still at the previous location. I was told he would be on his way shortly. Around 5:30 i was called and told he was running late but would be on his way soon. He arrived around 7 p.m. that evening. The technician looked at my backup pump system and told me they didn't have any parts for backup sump pumps and their supplier had been out of backup sump pumps since Irene was first forecast to come our way. He said he could order one and it would take a few weeks. He quoted the price for the repair and said it would cost nearly what I paid for the original system. He did verify for me that there was no warranty since the existing system was 4 years old. He did offer advice to contact the manufacturer to try to get the warranty extended, but all this did nothing for preparing me for the oncoming storm. He started to write up a service ticket explaining there was a charge for coming out, but I quickly reminded him that when I first made the call, they said the service charge was waived when they run late and that he would have the parts. The entire experience was a disappointment. Our power did go out during the storm as water was rushing into our sump pit, but I thank God I had purchased a generator a few years before and it still worked.

I have been using their service for six years now. They are nice to deal with. They may be little bit more expensive, but I am not sure. They come out when they say they are going to be out here. They are very reliable. The quality of their work, responsiveness, punctuality, and professionalism are all very good.
Description of Work: I use the service of Horizon Services Inc. for heater and air conditioner maintenance. I have a contract with them and they come in twice a year to check the heater and air conditioner for us.

This was my first time using the company and I was very surprised at the professionalism of everyone I spoke with, from the appointment specialist to the technician. The pricing was upfront and there were no surprises. The technician explained every part of the service and was very honest in not recommending unecessary repairs. I will definitely do business with Horizons in the future, and refer others. Dealing with small mom and pop shops are always a gamble. I'd rather do business with well established organizations that have history in the business and guarantees behind their work.
Description of Work: They replaced my capacitor, added refrigerant, changed my filter and tuned up my air conditioning system. The cost I paid also includes a service plan I chose to purchase which covers any issues experienced over the next year.
