Description of Work: Well, this experience ended up being more complicated than expected. | |The short version is that Paul and I did not communicate well. | |Here is my story. I've given myself plenty of distance before sharing it, as it was kind of traumatic. As a first time and new home owner, originally from a region that does not have basements or crawl spaces, I am admittedly ignorant regarding basements and crawl spaces. We contacted Paul because our kitchen drain was sluggish and sometimes backed up when the washing machine ran. | |After scheduling an appointment using Angie's list, I ended up needing to call to make arrangements. This is probably true for a lot of people, but it was much easier to get a clearer idea of what the scheduling issues were over the phone. Paul said that because we were far from his general work zone, he would come and do the inspection either in the evening (after 5:30) or on the weekend. This wasn't great for us, but we made it work, and he came on a Saturday morning. | |When he came to check out our issue, he seemed kind of annoyed. We showed him our sink issue, and when he went to check out the crawl space, he said there was water in the crawl space and he wouldn't be able to go down there. We told him we had 2 entrances to the crawl space, but he couldn't get a good idea because of the water via either entrance. He then said he'd have to leave and get special equipment and protective gear and come back another time if we wanted him to check out the issue further, but he said it in a way that made us think he didn't want to do this. He told us that he was certain, however, that that the sink issue was not a broken pipe (which we wondered because of the water) or clog, but that our pipes needed to be vented. He quoted us $350 to install the vent, which seemed reasonable. | |We also asked him about fixing the handle in our bath tub, which leaks water when it's on. He told us that the style we have is really old, and it would be more expensive to rebuild it than it would be to replace, and that replacing the system would be safer as well. The cost for replacement would be $650. We thought that was high, but after comparing to other prices, we have learned that to be very reasonable. | |He told us the first thing we needed to do was resolve the water issue in the crawl space. Because we thought it was related to rain, we contacted an encapsulation specialist. That person discovered (just by looking into the crawl space) that we had sewage in our crawl space, and we needed a clean up crew. Obviously our problem was much bigger and more immediate than we thought! | |We got in touch with a nearby plumber since we were under the impression that we were far for Paul, and that plumber recommended a clean up crew to us. The new plumber didn't go into the crawl space, but checked our clean-out for the main sewer outside (which Paul did not do), and suspected that we had a clog of some type. | |At this point, I contacted Paul through Angie's List to let him know about our disappointment in him not being able to identify the sewage that the encapsulation specialist could so plainly see from the entrance to he crawl space. I believe that people make mistakes, and I was trying to give him the opportunity to correct this one. We had not officially hired the other plumber to fix our issue yet. | |However, instead, Paul was defensive and rude, and he accused me of not wanting to spend the money to protect the health of my family. He was obviously overcharged with emotion in responding to my email through Angie's list. This was especially difficult because the situation was really scary for us! We have an infant and a new house and all of a sudden things are going pretty badly, with possibilities including mold problems, warped floors, and needing a new sewer. A little compassion from Paul, or at the very least a more professional attitude, would have gone a long way. | |In the end, my assessment is that Paul has very competitive prices. I think that he is probably a capable plumber, but I did not get to see his workmanship. But I also think that he does not communicate well, especially not via email. After his insults, I could not work with him, but he didn't put any effort into trying to regain me as a customer anyway. Having been a customer service rep before, I ended our communication with telling him what he should have said that would have left me with the impression that he was a professional and we had had a misunderstanding. | |I hired the other plumber who discovered quite the mass of tree roots in my sewer, and resolved the difficult issue for us while showing us some much appreciated sympathy.
