and replaced hinges and door hardware. They replaced the towel rack, repaired the drywall and repainted the bathroom. They also hung a towel hook and wardrobe hooks. These men do a good job and are eager to satisfy the customer. They're honest and punctual. I highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Bathroom facelift This is the second time I've used J & K and I continue to be pleased with the result. Jim and Allen replaced my shower doors, light fixture, shaved down the bathroom door

I've done tons of home improvement projects including building of a shed and deck. Unfortunately I was finishing my basement myself but had a water backup that the newly installed drywall had to be removed at 1ft. I decided to hire someone else to finish a few things in my basement. I only needed someone to finish the soffits and finish the drywall. Jim came and did a walkthrough of my basement. I was going to drywall my ceiling but he convinced me to do a drop ceiling. He provided a quote which was right around where I was thinking this would cost. He mentioned that his drywall finisher did not see the job and provided a ballpark figure. He said if it was over that price I would have to pay but mentioned he thinks it would be an extra $100-$200. We set things up for the following week. He met me early in the morning on a Tuesday at my house because of my work schedule and was planning on starting that day. Unfortunately due to weather he had to cancel. This I can understand. The next day he came and worked by himself and the Thursday he had a helper. I checked every night the progress and all was going nicely. I checked in on him on Friday and did not receive a response. I received a text later in the day that he did not arrive due to his kid was sick (as a parent I understand as well). He finished up early the next week. He had his drywall finisher, Mario, come and gave a price for the work. It was almost DOUBLE what he quoted. However, I did agree to it as I knew his drywall finisher from previous work and I had to odd walls in 2 spots. His finish came on a Saturday, 15 minutes late. He stayed all day to get 2 coats on spackle on the wall. However, he was very sloppy. Spackle on my concrete floor, around my steel poles and on the one door in the basement. Obviously this is a work in progress and I mentioned it to Jim. I let it go and he came back the next day. The drywall finisher had asked me on Sunday for more 20 minute spackle mix as he ran out. He said he called Jim but didn't get an answer. I went out and purchased a bag for him to finish up. I let Jim know this and he told me that Mario is his subcontractor and all has to go thru him, even though I had asked Mario to do some work in my kitchen (with Jim's approval and not part of our contract). On Monday, he finished up sanding. Once he was done, he immediately asked me for payment. I told him to call Jim because I wanted him to check the work. He came the next day and verified the work was good and he would be there on Wednesday to install the drop ceiling and finalize the job. He finished up and I received a text when he was leaving telling me to leave the final payment in the basement and he would come tomorrow to pick it up. There was an extra bucket of spackle mix and I asked Jim if that was mine to keep. He said he was returning it for a refund. I walked into the basement and was impressed with the ceiling. The finish was great, the ceiling looked good. Here is the downfall: I have spackle on my stairs, doors and drywall dust all over the items in my storage area as well as near my HVAC unit. I texted Jim and his response was and quot;Cant' stop the dust. What you gonna do when the kitchen gets done. You just can't help the dust. I seen worse.and quot; This was the last text I received from Jim. No apology or even to help clean up the dust or take some money off. Overall, the work looks nice, but the cleanup is messy. I have to sweep the floor, take off the spackle on the poles and doors, and clean off my personal items. Also the contract was for materials and labor. I would assume that I would keep the extra materials (I could be wrong on this one) but I received no reimbursement for my bag of spackle I had to purchase? It was nice at first, but I feel like he didn't want to do my job once he started it because I wanted to install the doors, trim and paint.

Response from J & K Contracting
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion however make sure you tell the whole story. Now I feel I have the right to tell my side.I am really socked that Jeff even has any issue with what we had to work with. I did not want to have to bring this up but now I feel I have to. First thing is we did not frame this basement. The framing work was horrible. All the walls were drywalled except where Jeff had to cut a foot out due to the flood. That's why he hired me.There was a wall built with 2 -45 degree angels. The drywall was already on and the one corner had exsposed wood that Mario had to fix. (Jeff knew this) Every wall had screw heads sticking out that we had to sink so Mario could finish. Above a doorway the drywall was 1/2" away from butting up to another sheet. Mario had to put a sheet of drywall over another sheet to line the butt seam up due to the framing. All of this fixing we had to do we did not charge for.Jeff had 4 sheets of drywall left in the basement that I included in the cost to finish hanging what needed done. Jeff then put those sheets in the storage room and now we can't get them out. So I told him it would be $40 more and he said ok.(He knew this but did not mention that in his review so remember the bucket of spackle I returned?) After the job was done I did not even charge him the $40. We were able to use 1 sheet by cutting pcs off at a time for soffits. I guess Jeff is upset about having to buy a bag of 20 min spackle for $14.00 .Sounds like he wanted me to pay him back but again I did not charge him for the extra drywall!. Mario is a real good finish guy. He works a full time job so his hrs at a customers house can be strange but I leave that up to the customer. Most don't mind. When I quoted Jeff on the finish work I must have told him 10 times(Don't hold me to this but I would guess about $400 for Mario to finish this job but anything over Jeff would be responsible for. Jeff agreed so I had Mario stop by and take a look at the job when I was done my part. Mario knows my work. I use him on all my jobs. When he seen it he told me $750 to finish it because of all gaps and bad corners and so on. ( that we did not do) I then contacted Jeff and told him Mario said $750 so that means you would have to cover the other $350. Jeff said OK. This is really why I am responding to the review. If you the customer agree to the terms of cost before the job starts then why would you complain about it in a review. Jeff could have said no. Everything was in a contract that we both signed with NO hidden costs. I have no idea why you would even say the spackle job looked sloppy when he started. Then you said it looked good when it was done. You can't judge something until it's done. Jeff and I texted each other a lot. Day and night about the job. I seen he was not happy that I did not reply right away on a Friday. I'm not even going to respond to that one because it is so redickulous.. As for the dust goes anyone knows you can not stop the dust. The dust issues was never brought up until after the job was done. Jeff had to clear out the basement before we could even start. So to me that would be the time to cover up my stuff if I did not want dust on it. If we were working in the living space that's a whole new story. I know I did not repond to everything on your review but I don't fell I need to. As you can see I have a very good record. Any customer that had an issue with something we took care of it right away and that turns into a good review. We went above and beyond to make this job look as good as it does. With what we had to work with it looks great. I try to do what it takes to please my customers. I feel this review was unfair and Jeff knows his basement turned out good.(the work we did) Like I said we are all entitleed to our own opinions. I will leave it at that. Thank You!

I'm a DIY guy that has done a lot of work to my cars and home including building my own 2 story deck with patio underneath. I was reluctant to hire someone to finish my basement but was under a time crunch I didn't think I could meet. I could not be happier I did. I could not recommend Jim and Co. any higher. He is a model of great service that seems dead in todays world. Jim was great at keeping in contact and his quote was very reasonable. Calls would be returned promptly and he would call ahead if he was running a little late. His work was super and he found creative was to figure out some rather complex issues in finishing a basement that clearly was not meant to be finished. His reasonable price included everything down to trim and paint. The price of doing all the work was so reasonable he creatively made a built-in bookcase and shelving for my entertainment center for a price that was close to or lower than me purchasing the entertainment center I wanted, and they looked better too. On top of that he was just a straight forward and good guy. My wife was pregnant at the time and had concerns with being alone at times with someone she didn't know. After meeting Jim and co. she was very comfortable, HUGE. He even brought his young son a time or two. In the end he met our deadline and needless to say were very pleased with his efforts.
Description of Work: Created finished basement and created door through 8" concrete wall separating my main basement to external egress basement that was previously no linked.

I originally contacted Jim to get a quote on repairing my damaged basement. Jim came out within a few days and looked at the job. A few days later he forwarded me a reasonable quote on the repair, but he also suggested that he could redo the entire basement for not too much more money. I decided to go with the complete remodel and I'm glad I did because I like the way the basement turned out. Jim and his associates Alan and Mario were a pleasure to work with- courteous, neat and punctual. These guys do all the work. There are no subcontractors. Throughout the project Jim was always making suggestions many of which I took. Again I'm glad I did. Jim stuck to his price quote too. When there were upgrades or extras that needed to be done Jim was fair with his pricing. Another thing I liked was that Jim was constantly in contact with me about the job. There was no chance of confusion or misunderstanding about what was being done. I believe that Jim honestly wanted to do a good job and wanted me to be a satisfied customer and I am. I will definitely be using Jim's services in the future and I highly recommend him.
