After a recent rain storm and water again flooding the basement, we called AJ Waterproofing. His wife answered the phone and was very pleasant. We made an appointment for AJ to come to the house to evaluate the problem. He was very patient and inspected every place water seemed to be entering and provided options to solve the problem. We decided on a solution and set a date to do the work. Aj and his crew arrived on time and finished the job that very day! All work was completed satisfactorily. The work was done very professionally and even though it was a difficult and dirty job, they left the house cleaner than when they began! We would highly recommend them to anyone who has a similar problem. Our only regret is that we didn't call them sooner.
Description of Work: We had a continuous problem of water flooding the basement after a rain. After deciding to do something about it, we had a drain jack-hammered along the basement perimeter and a sump pump installed.

After talking with three different basement waterproofing companies, we decided to go with AJ. Throughout the whole process, I felt that he had our best interest at heart. He ended up doing more work than the other two companies and charged us less to do it. His style is very relaxed. As the work was being done, we would discuss what he would find and alter the plans as neccessary. For example, AJ originally was going to dig around the outside perimeter of the house and waterproof the walls underground, but after digging out the inside for the drain, we determined that for the problem we had (water coming up into the room hydrostaticly) doing any waterproofing outside would be useless. The crew came in the morning around 9:30 and got to work covering up everything in the basement with plastic and moving what they needed to out of the way. During the first day, they got all the drain dug and put into place. The second day, they installed the pumps, concreted over everything, and replaced our clogged underground downspout. I was impressed with how much care they took keeping everything clean and making it look like they were never even here when they left. I wish the billing part of the working with AJ was a bit more formal. When all the work was done, he pretty much just ran numbers in his head and gave us a total. It was the same amount that he had quoted us at the beginning (with a written estimate), but we had altered plans during the process so only some parts of the original estimate still applied. The only downside, is that because of our situation, he could not guarantee that we would not have water again. Where we are, we get water coming from two different directions and can get up to 22 inches of water right up against the house, causing the first floor to flood. It is stated on the back of his estimate that they can't guarantee against a flood, but every company I talked to had the same clause. However, if the system helps at all, it was worth the money. If you are okay working with someone who is more on the informal side, then AJ is great. If you are the type of person that needs to have everything in writing and planned out to the last detail and are not good with going with the flow, then AJ might not be the right guy for you. We are looking into moving to a new house in the future, and if we ever need any work done in the basement, I would not hesitate to call AJ again.
Description of Work: installed french drain around perimeter of floor, 2 sump pump pits (one in front and one in back), 3 sump pumps, a grate in the french drain by the back door, and an underground downspout outside.

This was one of the strangest experiences I have ever had. Called and spoke to AJ's wife and she was very nice and professional. Explained he was out on a job and would call me back that evening. This was my first red flag. He did not and two days later I spoke to her again, again very nice but no real explanation as to why I did not receive a call back. AJ contacted me later that day and although he took the time to speak to me, and appeared to be very knowledgeable he made it clear my job was too small and too far out of his way to make it worth his while and it would be minimum 3K. How can you quote a job you have never seen? He was more concerned with who else I was getting quotes from and that they would get the sale so he was not going to waste his time. By the end of the conversation he said well maybe he would stop by or give me a call over the weekend. Never did. The irony is we ended up going with another company who offered a similar solution to what he recommended over the phone, not the competitor he was so concerned about. From the other reviews it appears he does quality work, but only if he decides it is worth his while.

Response from AJ Waterproofing
I would like to say that I am sorry that I was unable to come out to you in a timely fashion that was convenient to you, but I was still hoping to come out to you after this very difficult job was completed this week. As I had said during our conversation, I would try to come out over the weekend,(which was this past weekend) l but my son had a wrestling tournament and I was busy with my family and this week I was on a job 100 yards from the Delaware River and unable to break away. When my wife told you I was on a job, I'm not sure why that would send up a red flag. I am the owner of the company and I am on each and every job I do. I do one job at a time with my crew, that is how I am able to have such an exemplary reputation. When we spoke on the phone, you said you wanted to have your crawlspace floor encapsulated. I explained to you that I do not encapsulate the way that you wished and I explained how I do and about the cost of what it could be. Again, I am sorry that I was unable to help you and I wish that you would have called before you felt the need to post this review for work that I have not done. As you can see by my reviews, the only time I have had anything below and "A" rating is from someone that I have not done work for and for people that I have tried to help over the phone. We are a very honest company that try's to help people before worrying about taking money from them that we do not feel is necessary. Again, I am sorry that we were unable to help you and I hope that you are happy with the job that you did have done.

We had a leaky basement in an approximately 100 y/o house that was getting progressively worse after each rain. Called several companies to evaluate the problem and provide estimates. AJ was by far the most knowledgeable about diagnosing and fixing the problem. He is extremely professonal. He started and completed the job right on schedule. AJ was personally there for the entire job. He left the basement cleaner than before he arrived. He followed up after to make sure everything was satisfactory. I would use AJ again and highly recommend him.

I really liked his ideas. He was more creative and a little less unnecessarily excessive in areas, which I appreciated. However, he was informal just for my taste. He didn’t bring the paperwork and he was very relaxed about payments and agreements, but I think it was just his style of work. I would recommend him to people who are just a little more informal.

All of the positive reviews are completely accurate. He is an honest business man who is true to his word and keeps to his schedule. I interviewed 3 different companies and am happy I chose AJ. He does not use any high pressure sales tactics which I appreciate. His workers were efficient and reliable. AJ went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and that the job was done right. They even left my basement cleaner than how they found it!

The job went very well. He and his crew were very knowledgeable and experienced in this work, and AJ fine-tuned the offering based on discussions with us. They got the work done quickly and cleaned up everything spic and span. As with any large contractor project in your home, make sure you keep an eye on the work to be sure it meets your expectations. A close inspection when near completion revealed one of the workers cut a corner in re-concreting an area well-hidden from view. I brought it to AJ's attention and he had his crew do it right. However, even prior to discovering this issue, AJ had personally used some excess concrete left over to perform a small repair on my driveway - no charge. All I had to do was ask. AJ is very attentive to meeting your needs. At the end I believe we got a very well designed and installed system at a very fair price. Our house was undisturbed by their work and they left no dust, dirt, or debris behind. And AJ made sure that we were satisfied.
Description of Work: AJ installed a water drainage system in our crawl space and basement / garage. This included trenching the floor to install the french drain system, a sump pit with main pump and battery back up, discharge piping, and re-concreting the floor when done. The work area was sealed off from the rest of the house to prevent dust infiltration and large HEPA filters / fans were used to clean the air and blow it outside. Mold treatment of the walls was also completed.

We had been getting small amounts of water for the last couple of years in two areas of our basement. After Hurricane Irene in 2011 we began to get more water with heavy rains. During Irene we were using a pool pump through the storm just to keep up so we decided to have the problem taken care of. AJ stopped over the same day I called and gave me an estimate. He looked at the job and suggested what was needed. I requested a backup pump that I first read about while reading AJ Waterproofing's reviews. It is used when the power goes out which ours often does. By the time he left we had agreed upon pricing and that the work would commence shortly. The crew arrived as scheduled and did a very neat job. Everything was covered and protected. It is extremely hard work. They finished in one day with just one item needing to be attended to afterward and it was.My only surprise was that I needed to have an electrician put in a new outlet to run the equipment.

We have had it done several times but not like this. He did it very well. His work crew was very pleasant. It's amazing how clean that basement is considering what they were doing down there. He was very nice. It was as pleasant an experience as it could be. I have recommend him to four other people already. A couple of the other people I interviewed for the job, it seemed like they wanted to frighten me. One other guy told me that my house could fall off the foundation. He threw out a figure and he said that if I signed right now he would take so much money off and he hadn't even told me what he was going to do. This guy wasn't anything like that. He wasn't trying to frighten us. He told us exactly what he was going to do and that's what he did. The job wasn't cheap but I think given what he did and my experience talking with the other people, it was a reasonable price. Very, very professional. I asked him how long it was going to be, he said probably a week. They were here Monday and they were out by noon on Friday. It's rained already and there is no water on the floor, the walls are dry. It's just great, I'm happy.

In Delaware: Sunday, Roto-Rooter was out and couldn't tell us what pipe was leaking only it might be the foundation. Yesterday, I called my local insurance company and Toni gave me 2 people who could at least tell us what we needed to do, no phone call was returned from either person. Artesian was out the same day and tested their lines to the house and couldn't tell us anything but it was not their lines.
Description of Work: I used Angies List and found AJ Waterproofing and thank Jesus I did. We live in Delaware and AJ (Penna) called me this morning and gave me instructions on how to test the pipes for a pipe or sewer line leak. God bless AJ and his wife for being the only ones who could move us toward a possible direction. Most importantly, AJ called us back. Yesterday, I called my local insurance company and Toni gave me 2 people who could at least tell us what we needed to do, no phone call was returned from either person. A.J. came on 7/6/12 and I walked him through all my issues in the basement. He went outside and identified a grading issue near the sewer outlets that he believed to be the cause of the leak in the North wall, which he said he would fix if awarded the job. He listened to all my concerns and explained everything to me, including explaining the caution that will be exercised when opening up the area near the oil burner due to the existing, though shut off, radiant heat piping sytem buried in the floor, as well as the buried oil line leading to the tank. I ultimately awarded them the job and have a scheduled service date of 7/27/12. They will be installing a french drain system along the North and West side of the inside of my basement, as well as underneath my basement steps, tying it into my existing sump pump outlet. They are also going to strip the paint off those two walls and reapply a rubberlized paint, along with a couple other odds and ends that I didn't expect them to do (add an outlet for the existing dehumidifier to drain into once the french drain is in place and install hot/cold water shutoffs to an existing wash basin). Oh, and the outside fix to the grading around the sewer outlets. Total estimate of $4,500. Looking forward to having this work finished and never again worrying about how much water will come in when Mother Nature decides to open the flood gates. *UPDATE - 1/11/13* I am extremely happy with the results. Since I had the work done, not a drop of water anywhere in my basement. Any water that did come in filtered hrough the French drain to the sump pump and it did the rest. Best $ I spent on my house, hands down!
Description of Work: Based on recommendations I read on here, I called on 6/21/12 and left a message for a return call. I received a call back from Caroline a couple hours later and went through the issues I was having in my basement - small crack/leak on the North wall about a foot to foot and a half up from the floor that oozed / dripped water only when it rained torentially from the North; small crack on the East side of the floor (within a couple inches of the wall edge) that oozed when it rained heavy. I asked about stripping the existing paint off the walls, which shows sign of wear and tear (bubbling, etc.), and reapply a dry lock type of paint. She suggested a french drain that would empty into my existing sump pump. I was more than happy to entertain both options, looking for an on-site visit so an estimate could be worked up. An appointment was made for the late afternoon of 6/25/12. He was unable to make the appointment on 6/25/12, so it was rescheduled to Friday, 7/6/12.

I had called and left a message with Member early Monday afternoon that A.J. was unable to make his appointment later that afternoon but that he would be happy to either reschedule for that evening or any other day that was convenient for her. When I called Member she said that she never got my message and we have rescheduled the appointment. A.J. is on every job. He is the gentleman who comes out to give you the estimate and he is on each and every job. A.J. does not leave a job until he is confident that everything is going well and wrapping up. If he is unable to make an appointment, he either calls the appointment directly or asks me to call and reschedule. We try very hard not to have to reschedule, but sometimes it does happen. If it does happen, we always try to reschedule at a time that is good for the homeowner.

after getting a unreasonable estimate from another waterproofing co. i called A.J. waterproofing. what a difference. A. J. came out himself and went out of his way to work with us so we could get the job done. we're in the process of selling our house and after doing other projects we were runniing a little short on money. my wife was pretty upset about the situation until A.J. told her to calm down. he said we would be able to pay him when we sold the house. i couldn't believe it. from then on my wife and i really felt confident he would do a good job for us. we were right. him and his crew came on time and didn't even stop to eat lunch or anything. when they left for the day everything was cleaned up until they showed up the next day. A. J. monitored everything they did, not that he had to. all the crew did was work and they did an excellent job. the basement even looks a lot better without the paneling. it took 4 days to complete the job. after this job was completed, we not only found an excellent contractor but we also made a friend. if your basement needs waterproofing, don't hesitate to call A.J. waterproofing. sincerely, V.S. in havertown pa.
Description of Work: we had water coming into the basement so we called A.J. waterproofing. first they had to take our old paneling, take up old carpets and clean out old stuff that we had. first they did a drill and seal. then they installed a pressure relief system, submersible sump pump and submersible container. they then cleaned the walls and spray painted with antimicrobial and waterproof paint.

We interviewed four contractors for the work - all of them recommended on Angie's List. A.J. DiElsi was the first to visit with us and he impressed us right from his initial visit with his knowledge, candor, professional recommendations and references. We had heard that there were a number of less-than-scrupulous operators in the waterproofing business, but Mr. DiElsi inspired trust from the getgo. We are so pleased with our "amazingly new" basement that we would highly recommend AJ Waterproofing to anyone who has a damp basement issue. He truly knows his business: he did exactly what was promised, his crew were friendly and hard-working - they did everything in one and a half days, unobtrusively as possible and sensitive to the shrubbery they had to work around. AJ Waterproofing is one truly professional organization!
Description of Work: AJ Waterproofing installed a complete french drain in our basement, together with a sump pump system which included a water pressure-based backup system as we frequently lose power in our area during winter storms. His crew further cleaned all of our basement walls - the house is 41 years old - and applied two coats of a rubberized paint on all the interior walls. The basement looks so new that I was hesitant at first to even return the items I had temporarily stored in the garage. AJ further helped us to identify the source of our basement dampness issues; he suggested that we close off a planter section on our back patio (approx.30 sq. ft.) and further install a rubberized sealing system along one side of our addition to eliminate any moisture from that side as well. His crew did such a beautiful job with their masonry work that you could hire AJ Waterproofing for that reason alone!

They responded to my phone call right away. I was given the estimate within24 hours and the work has been accomplished. They did all that they said they would & more. They were very careful in their work habits.....made a great effort to cover the carpet. There is no outside access other than a small window and this was used to bring the materials to the basement. There was confusion over the sump pump they replaced this even though it was not in the estimate. At first I was going to be charged until I pointed out that this seemed to be free with the coupon on Angie' Lists if a French drain was installed. I was very happy with the work done to install Humidex system installed by CMI.
Description of Work: After removing the paneling , a barrier was placed on the existing wall and a French Drain was installed. A public water back-up system was installed. The entire crawlspace walls were painted with rubberized waterproof mold resistant paint.

This day in age there aren't many companies that do business like the old days. I can say with confidence that AJ does and I wish everyone still did business this way. AJ came in and gave it to us straight with what was wrong with our old system and was very clear as to why he knew what was wrong based on his experience. He is an extremely confident guy with an extremely confident team. And what better way to back up their confidence then by doing an extremely thorough, clean, and excellent job. He was very accommodating in scheduling an appointment. I'm a very busy person and requested him to come out in the evening, which was no issue. He evaluated our old system clearly identified and saw it was done by a unprofessional by certain tendencies of such "waterproofers." He provided his recommendations as to what was needed to resolve our issues with the basement flooding. Being that we had this done before and it was a failure, we wanted to make this system full proof. Though it seemed to be overkill of what we requested in addition to his proposal, by adding a second well, he was very receptive to the idea. He did try to explain it was probably overkill and not needed, which shows he was a very honest guy by not just being accepting of the additional work and money it would have cost, but we explained we were willing to spend the extra money for peace of mind knowing if something happened to the one well that we had a back up. His team came in on time an were very polite and professional. They took care of the job as stated above and were EXTREMELY clean. After they had the job completed, the basement was cleaner than before they came. They were thorough and very detailed oriented and made sure they did exactly as contracted. If you had work done by other contractors you know they tend not to follow up as they are always concerned about the next job. After our job was completed, we received a follow up call to make sure we were happy, which was very comforting. I have to say, over the years I feel we have had bad luck with contractors, builders, plumbers, waterproofers, etc. I'm hoping with AJ its start a new trend of having excellent work done by a great company to our house.
Description of Work: We had a our basement waterproofed by another company a few years back, but it was evident after last years record rain fall that the system wasn't completed correctly. We had flooding even with the smallest amount of rain as well. That being said we wanted to get the current system re-evaluated and see what we needed to do to get the system working. The service conducted was a complete overhaul of our existing system. Dry Wall removal and disposal Mold prevention Replacement of the old system which included breaking up the concrete replacing all the work and materials done by the previous company and re-concreted the floor. Installed well on the opposite side of the current well. Provided a new sump pump for the new well Replaced the old sump pump from the existing well Re routed the drain pipes outside for proper drainage Installed window drains to help drain the water correctly. Connected the down spouts from our gutters outside into drainage pipes to take the water away from the house.

After living in my house for many years I noticed the basement taking on more an more water during periods of heavy or extended rain. After finally deciding to take care of the problem I contacted a few firms for estimates. AJ was the lowest of the bids collected but I would have chosen him had he not been. AJ is direct, personable, knowledgable and a man of his word. The job took two days to complete. Day one AJ showed up early, ran through the process and the crew went immeditately to work. Their work was neat, fast and efficient. The next day the crew came back to finish the job. I came home the night of their second work day to find a sparkling basement. Hats off to AJ's crew. It has been two months and not a drop of water in the basement.
Description of Work: Installed sump pump, french drain system and repainted basement walls.

AJ came out with the crew on a snowy Saturday. Before they started work, they shoveled snow from our driveway. They have cover all of the basement with protective plastic to contain dirt and dust. They carefully removed all the items from the garage in order to create proper work place. When they were done, the garage and basement were thoroughly cleaned and all items put back. Our garage walls look very well and they remain dry.
Description of Work: Our garage walls (part of our garage is under ground- house sits on a hill) were damp and cement was bubbling and peeling off. AJ waterproofed and refinished the walls.

Great experience -- start to finish. A.J. installed the new pump the same day I contacted him at a very reasonable price. After a few heavy rain storms, the pump is working great and I have nothing but the highest praise for his work.
Description of Work: Replaced sump pump within existing structure.

We were completely pleased with the experience and with the results, and recommend A.J. without hesitation as the solution to your basement waterproofing needs. A.J. is clearly dedicated to customer satisfaction, which is reflected in the high quality of his work and the work of the people he hires. He pays his workers well and they mutually respect each other. One of the ways that A.J. impressed us was that during our initial walk-through and conversation about our basement, he observed everything very closely and made recommendations that were uniquely-suited and most cost-effective for our situation. The work was undertaken swiftly and efficiently, but carefully. Every effort was made to be as unobtrusive as possible and the workers were completely successful in leaving the place neat when they were done. A.J. is friendly and personable and a lot of fun to get to know. It's just too bad that the quality of his work is so good that we probably won't ever need to have him come back.
Description of Work: A.J. Waterproofing installed a French drain in our basement in Media, PA.

I first left a message on Saturday the 10th asking if they do free estimates. Didn't hear back that Monday so I called them back on Tuesday. Set up a time for AJ to come to my home. He was supposed to be here between 1:30 and 2:00. He called at 1 asking if he could come then. I said sure. I met him in the driveway so he wouldn't ring the doorbell and wake my little ones. As we were walking in the house, I asked if he had booties he could slip on over his shoes. He did not. He said he didn't even have socks on so it was either going to have to be his shoes or his bare feet. AJ asked which I preferred and I said well, really neither. Thinking we would then come up with a compromise (say plastic grocery bags on his shoes like I've done with other workers). Instead he says, I can't help you then and turned around and walked off. Interesting way of doing business.
Description of Work: Didn't hire him to do the job. Never actually received an estimate.

Response from AJ Waterproofing
Over the Christmas Holiday I will be working at Episcopal Academy's new campus in their Theater. I have done several challenging jobs for them over the past 20 years and this will be another. I will not be wearing booties or bags on my feet, but I guarantee I will not leave a mess anywhere in that theater, in the hallways leading to the theater, in the parking lot outside the Theater, no where where there be a mess. That is what I have built my reputation on, clean efficient business. This young lady was rude in the way she asked me about my shoes or booties. I choose to walk away for that reason. I came to her home, not with work boots on, but with my day shoes that were clean. If I were to go to a potential clients home with dirty work boots on I would address the situation properly. I wish her well in finding a solution to her problem.
