Jr's Quality Tile & Hardwood

Dishonest, Unprofessional, Shoddy Work* I’ve read people’s horrible experiences with contractors in the past and always cringed and felt sorry for them but thought, “wow, glad that wasn’t me.” Well, my time came with JR’s Quality Tile & Hardwood. From the start, the owner, Fred, made the experience difficult and it only got worse from there. And yes, I should have listened to my gut at first hint of problem but after reading so many positive reviews online I pressed on. I hired the company to remodel my bathroom after a water leak. I selected all the materials, got the quote and then out of the blue, Fred started asking me to consider other materials but could never provide a clear reason. Living in an old house where there are no even floors, I worried that his questions were steering me to a product better suited for the unevenness in my bathroom but when I repeatedly asked why he only said ‘comfort’ and ‘warmer under foot’. Most of the remodel was done by Tommy, with whom I have no complaints. He did great work installing the tile. The problems I had were solely with Fred and his son. The wainscotting I selected was to be painted, however, once the tile was done the plumber reinstalled the sink and toilet on Fred’s direction meaning that proper painting could not be done behind those items. I asked Fred how the painting would be done and he replied in email, “we’ll do our best to paint around it.” For a $10k+ job I don’t expect half-assed work and I said so. At this time, Fred also told me that they were 25% over budget and wanted to ‘give me a heads up’ so I knew before I got the bill. Never mentioned any of this earlier in the project when the overruns started! He argued with me that the wainscotting really didn’t need painting though I had a line item in quote for painting, and I sent photos of the blemishes, pencil marks and writing (someone wrote ‘TOP’) on the waincotting; then he felt that he shouldn’t have to pay for the plumber’s time; then he finally agreed to the plumber and told me that this son would be doing the painting. After his son was onsite for a few hours and got one coat done on the baseboards, trim and wainscotting he was supposed to return the next day to finish, but oops he forgot that he had orientation for a new job he was starting and wouldn't be back as Fred told me the morning of so Fred came to finish the work. He was onsite for a few hours, painted a bit and reinstalled the toilet and sink. After a few days, I was able to fully see the shoddy work the son and Fred did. In addition to not fixing the over-sanded trim, the baseboards and wainscotting were never caulked before painting so there were large cracks in every seam, many of pencil marks on the wainscotting were still visible, Fred grouted around the pipes in the floor connecting the radiator which my heating company told me should never have been done as it constricted the expansion / contraction needs of the pipes and could have caused huge issues. I spent more than $1,000 to fix the problems Fred and his son created and to properly finish the work they should have done. I deducted this from the amount I agreed to pay, documenting all of the issues he left with photos. When he replied to my email he had the gall to mention that he never even tried to fix the over-sanded trim. Without a doubt THE worst ‘professional’ I’ve ever worked with.

The owner definitely knows the business. Dealt well with various crews and suppliers. Unlike companies that only sell flooring, Jr's installed a sturdy and quite subfloor. And their salesman Bill, certainly worked to find the exact LVT I wanted. As most construction projects go, it took longer than planned, mostly due to the LVT supplier. Jr's and his outside contractors really worked with me to get the results I wanted. My only complaint is I wish it cost less, but you get what you pay for.

I can't praise JR's enough. Professionalism from the carpenters to the tile man, to the project manager. Mike ( project manager), easy to work with, agreeable to my needs and wants; worked up several floor plans. I hired my own plumber who worked with JR's. I chose and purchased my own vanity, etc. They did tile shower, installed everything, painted, trimmed, put in shower window, moved walls and leveled floors: they cleaned the area on a daily basis, protected the rest of the bedroom. The carpenters (Neil and Steve) asked questions when they began each phase to insure proper placement of everything. Bathroom opens to bedroom and kitchen area. Fred, the owner and ultimate boss, was easy to work with; Bill, at the store, was helpful in assisting me to choose shelving, etc. All -in- all, a great experience; I will definitely use them again when the time arises,

Fred and company were great to work with. The project was able to be started early. Fred was knowledgeable and worked with us to pick harmonious tile and grout combinations. The store has a very good selection of tile, carpet, and vinyl. He worked with us to keep the budget reasonable and let us do the rough demolition work to save some money. Many of the services are local contractors that he subcontracted to handle the electric and plumbing etc. We had other renovation contractors who had quoted using one of the same electricians with a higher hourly mark up, so Fred's price was decent. We were happy at the pace the work proceeded at, and the workers were mostly punctual and polite. The quality of craftsmanship of the entire job was top notch. There was not a lot of excess dirt or clutter overall. Our main bedroom was also going to be renovated, so they used it for the cutting/tool room. The tile work is great, all the cuts are nice, the tile pattern is great. We did some painting ourselves again to save money on the project, and there was enough time to fit in painting around other laborers coming in. Fred stopped over several times during the work and checked in on the progress. There was a slight miscommunication regarding our faucet and sink, so the correct replacement took about 2 weeks to arrive. Because we were not yet using that bathroom, it was not a problem for us to wait for the new parts. Communication over phone or email was timely. Overall we are extremely pleased with JR's. All the guys are great to work with, the process was smooth, everyone stayed flexible with minor issues and timetables, and I feel we paid an appropriate amount for the job.

The end result is fantastic. The original cork flooring came in a very different color than the sample and was sent back and the vendor (Krauss) actually pulled the cork line due to inconsistencies in color so Fred worked extremely hard to find other cork vendors to find another product with similar color. When the final cork product (WE Cork) was chosen, Fred chose perfectly matched trim: toe kicks (cabinet bases) and reducer strips. The installers did very high quality work, were friendly, trust worthy, hard working and quick. Although not originally planned for replacement, the old base boards in dining room were pretty beat up and wrong color so the installers suggested and cut new base boards for us to stain to match which was a great decision for the final look. I highly recommend JR's to others.

It is beautiful and easy to clean. JR's had a large selection of vinyl flooring and I was very impressed with how close the choices resemble ceramic tile and even wood. The vinyl arrived promptly and installed soon after. The installer was neat, precise, trust worthy and took just a few hours. The transformation was amazing, that old linoleum had to go but the new linoleum looks so much like ceramic tile but it isn't cold to bare feet or slippery! The price was steeper than vinyl tiles found at a box store because I chose a vinyl sheet and the bathroom was smaller than the width dimensions of the roll, so I essentially have enough to spare to redo another small bathroom or mudroom.

Fred was amazing! He assisted me in selecting all of my needed items. He was very patient with me as I discovered my own personal style. He made a difficult process much easier. He is genuine, interesting, amusing, and an excellent designer. With Fred's help and vision, I can say I have the perfect space.

I cannot say how pleased I am with this company. We had someone come in to refinish the floors and it was obvious early on that they did not know what they were doing so we had to take them off the job. We were left with a mess and were behind on our deadline. Everyone in town had a long waiting list and their bids were quite expensive. I turned to Angies list and found Jr's Quality Hardwood and gave them a call. Fred, the owner came out right away and they were able to squeeze me in their busy schedule and gave me a very reasonable price. Fred was so pleasant and personable. He also was very positive in regards to undoing someone's bad job, which is probably one of the worst situations vendors have to deal with. Fred's crew came in and did an incredible job. I had to leave town before they got started and my mother was in the house while the floors were being done. She really enjoyed the crew as they were friendly, knowledgable and considerate. They did a professional job. The floors beauty really comes through. Fred even sent pictures to me to show me the progress. This is a first rate company! We got very lucky! I would not hesitate to recommend this company especially to someone who has expensive wood floors and wants to ensure that they are done right.

I was pleased with the work and the work was very good. They were minor things that were left out but they were excellent. They cleaned up after themselves. There was a minor issue with the scheduling but that was a minor point. The punctuality was not the best but it was not a big deal.

They were very thorough and gave me a detailed estimate. They were very good to work with. I would use them again in the future.

He handled the entire job for us. Every sub-contractor he sent to work in our home was excellent. They were trustworthy and friendly. They did a wonderful job. The prices are reasonable.
