I cannot say enough wonderful things about this group. I sent an email via Angie's List and was called 2 days later by Bill Baylor, the designer. He came to our home, went through everything we wanted done, gave spectacular recommendations to the type of plants that were best suited to us. A week later, he returned with a plan and pictures of how our home would look with the plants he picked. We were bowled over! This was a Friday. He said they'd be here Weds/Thurs and sure enough, they showed up Thurs morning ready to work. I have to stop here and say that the crew that came to our home were OUTSTANDING. Very respectful, very cheerful, and hard workers. The owner of the company, James, also came out and stayed with the project and worked alongside his guys. You do not see that very often. The heat and humidity did not deter them. I know how hard it was to move that Japanese Maple and they took very good care of it as it is a costly tree. Day 2: Same thing. They all showed up on time, cheerful and friendly and went right to work. Today they put in all the plants, arranged according to Billy's plan and Billy was here first thing this morning to ensure all the plants went were he arranged. And again, James was here working with them. Our yard has now been weeded, excavated, planted and mulched and it looks FANTASTIC. What a difference we see in how our yard looks. I could not be any happier. Next year, we will have them back! I just want to thank JLS Land Service AND Angie's List b/c I never would have found them any other way. I would also like to say that we had another company put in a French drain and wall planters around our shed 2 years ago and I will never have them back. JLS Land Services was well worth every penny spent. THANK YOU JLS and Angie's List!!
Description of Work: Completely gave a new look to our landscape to the front and side of the house, excavated, weeded, mulched, put all new plants and moved a beautiful Japanese Maple tree.

We've used JLS a couple times in the past to mulch, clean up beds, dig footers and install new drainage lines on the side of our house. Each time they've been professional and hard working. The owner is very down to earth and does everything he can to go the extra mile to make sure the customer is happy. Unfortunately being out of a job short-term is going to prevent us from using them this spring but we're looking forward to working with them later in the year or early next year to replace our paved side-walk and aging wood stairs in the front of the house.
Description of Work: Had 6 yards of mulch brought in and installed, all our beds weeded and cleaned up and had them drill 2 footers under a raised deck so I could install supports for a new hot tub.

They showed up on time and were very professional. Everything that they said they would do was done very efficiently and professionally. All of the greenery that was planted looks fresh and green. Your could tell that they were newly purchased and had not been out of the ground a long time. They cleaned up after themselves. The whole property looks very beautiful and welcoming. We are very satisfied and would gladly use them again. Two neighbors saw the wonderful job they were doing and the company got two more jobs from the look of our property.

I contacted JLS Landscaping to estimate the job of landscaping the front of our house. Jim Langenstein, the landscape architect came out and discussed our needs and budget. He returned a few days later with a detailed design showing the outline of the beds and the names and placement of the plants. He described all plants specified in his proposal, and suggested alternatives based on our input. He also included an in-ground lights system to wash over the front of the house. We scheduled the work and James and his crew came out and completed everything in two days. Jim was there the entire time supervising the work. The design included some daffodils, and when Jim showed me the bag of bulbs that they were getting ready to plant I asked what color they were. Jim said they were white with yellow cups, but I wanted yellow with orange cups. The nursery where they bought their stock didn't have any of those, so Jim scoured the area stores for yellow daffodils until he found some (thank you, Home Depot!). James and his guys did a wonderful job. I can't wait 'til spring when all the plants will bloom, it's really going to look spectacular. I was very impressed with the professionalism and attention to detail of both Jim L. and James. I will definitely use JLS Landscaping again for any lawn and landscaping work.

Excellent. The work was quality and the owner knows his stuff, is reasonable on price and does what he says. The only one little minor detail is he had to postpone the job once as I think he overbooked his guys.
Description of Work: Two of my neighbors backyards all converge into my own on a down slope. Consequnetly the drain pipes from my house and their homes all drain water together down the slope creating pools of water in my backyard. As mentioned, there was a delay in having the work completed. The deal was purchased a full year or more before the final product. The first assigned person came out quickly and was very clear there was a backlog of work and that it would take some time. After about 6 months I started to wonder but had other projects going around the house so i didn't follow up very promptly. Finally, i got back in touch JLS and a new guy, Jim, was sent out. He was really super and again told me that it might take some time; i was in no hurry. After several weeks, i got my design and had an opportunity to go through the decisions regarding layout and plant choices. i'm overall really pleased with the final product. I have to accept some responsibility for the delay since I didnt really stay on top of it myself. The final analysis, JLS WANTS to make the customer happy and will work to a reasonable solution.
Description of Work: Landscape Design Got the Angie's List Deal for a landscape design. There were initially some minor problems w/ receiving the final design but once a new guy, Jim, got the work on his plate, he was acceptably responsive and answered questions re: plants, location, care and offered some additional thoughts and advice for my yard. I'm very pleased with the work overall and would do business w/ this company again.

Overall, the experience was good. James, the owner, responded in a timely manner to my request for an estimate. After my husband and I decided to have the work done, we called James to set up a date. I waited too long to write this review, and I don't recall all of the details with regard to dates, but I do recall that one day James was unable to come when he scheduled to come, but he did call to let us know that he would not be able to make it. He did come on the rescheduled date. James was always a gentleman -- very polite, and answered any questions we had.

Filter fabric installed between subsoil and french drain system to help prevent dirt and debris from clogging system. Approx. 4 inches of clean stone installed on bottom of trench, 4 inches of drainage perforated pipe installed. Four inches of clean stone installed on top of pipe. Filtration fabric overlapped top of system. Two cleanouts installed in system 3 to 5 ft. drywell installed at end of french drain system. Pop-up emitter installed in the event of heavy rainfall to prevent system from backing up. Wet and unusable topsoil that was excavated was hauled away. Fresh topsoil installed on uneven lawn areas. All disturbed areas stabilized with seed and erosion matting.

The process took about 1 month from start to finish. At first we contacted JLS just for routine landscape maintenance. However, James was honest in his appraisal and told us what we could see for ourselves--namely, that there was a great deal of overgrowth. Although he would have done only what we asked for at first, James suggested that we have his associate and a landscape architect, Jim, look at the property, give us an assesment, and work-out a long-term game plan for getting the landscaping back into shape. We did meet with Jim and without regret. As it turned out, James and his crew started with the original work we requested by cleaning and de-weeding the grounds. Once the overall game plan and costs were worked-out with Jim, James and his crew came back to remove and, in some cases, replant the overgrowth. Then they came back to do the replantings. They left with the place looking wonderful and the best it had in years. We will have them come back to do the routine maintenance and do the cutting-back and selective pruning in late fall which is part of the longer term plan Jim recommended.
Description of Work: James and associate, Jim, gave us a landscape over haul of plantings that were about 10 years old and poorly pruned over the years. They transformed the overgrowth for a reasonable price and now the property looks well manicured and proportionate to both the house and the other plantings. They reused what plants they could by relocating them to other more suitable areas and they replaced only what they had to. They did the work for the price and amount of time they quoted and they and the crew were pleasant and professional. In fact, James went beyond the contacted services and replaced our rotted mail post at no additional cost. We would use JLS again and would recommend them to others.

I told James he had the job and he told me he would get back to me to schedule the work. This took a while and the work was scheduled for the 26th of July. James and his crew arrived promptly on the 26th and set about their work. I did notice they did not have much heavy equipment to level the areas where the stumps had been removed. They did have a walk behind front-end loader which James assured me would be adequate for the job. I was a bit sceptical as I had attempted to tackle this job myself with my Kubota tractor and front-end loader which was definatly more powerful than the walk behind James was going to use but I left James to his work as he started on the first area in the front yard where one of the trees had been removed. The job took James and his crew most of the day to complete. Upon inspection of the finished work, I noticed James had forgotten about the area in the backyard where the second tree had been removed and they had forgotten to do one of the five tree rings. He immediatly put his crew to work to finish the tree ring and he started to tackle the second area that needed leveled and seeded himself. They finished in an hour or so and were paid for their work. I'd like to note that all the leveled areas were seeded and straw put down so it was difficult to see the quality of the work below the straw. This is why I have waited several weeks to write this review so the grass has had time to grow and I have had a chance to mow these newly seeded areas to really feel how level they were. I mowed these newly seeded areas on Aug. 14th and was very disappointed. The front lawn area is rough and in my opinion barely passable. The backyard area is totally disapointing. It has large high and low areas that should have been leveled and I am sure the mower will be scalping the lawn in this spot due to the gross unevenness! His rush to finish this area is reflected in the quality of work that was produced here. I would also like to point out that they did not bring a trencher to finish the ditch for the water line. Instead they elected to use picks and shovels. This resulted in the remaining ditch not being dug to the 10" specified depth and the water line now is not at this depth along its total length. On the plus side, I will give them good grades on the mulching of the tree rings as these do look good after they completed this work. In hind sight, they were the lowest bidder out of the 2 bids received, but I would get a third bid next time. I would recommend them for minor work like mulching but if it comes to any work beyond this I would go with a larger company which has the equipment to tackle the job.
Description of Work: James came out on July 11th and gave an estimate on the following work: 1) Two large trees had been removed and the stumps ground and we needed these two areas leveled, clean fill added, and seeded to return them to useful yard area. Any leftover stump grindings or soil was to be removed from site. I had already used my Kubota tractor with front-end loader to dig out any remaining small roots and stump grindings and pile on site. 2) A prior landscaping company had cut tree rings around 4 large trees and one small tree in our backyard but had never returned to finish putting down weed barrier or mulch these new tree rings. James was asked to finish this job by laying weed barrier and adding mulch to the five new rings. 3) While on site James noticed I was in the process of burying an irrigation line running from our house to our raised bed garden area in the back yard. I had purchased a sub-soiler attachment for the Kubota to dig this 130' trench. Due to the hardness of the ground I had only been able to get the 10" deep trench about 3/4 of the way complete. James offered to complete this trench and bury the water line for me as long as I had the line ready to go in the ground when he was here doing the rest of the landscaping. For the complete job, James wrote up an estimate for $1400. I had gotten a second estimate for this work from Cedar Run Landscapes for $4000 for just items 1 & 2 above and felt thay were extremely high for this amount of work. In hind sight I should have gotten a third estimate to see who was closer.

Response from JLS Land Services
The member contacted us to do some landscape work for him at his house. He had some projects already started and after some discussion we agreed to help him finish the projects he had already started. We arrived at his residence promptly. The front lawn came out nice. We regraded area where stump was ground out and hauled away excess material off sight. The back lawn we finished his already started escavation project. Due to the hardness of the ground and the amount of shale we trenched out the trench to the level he had already trenched. We did not bring a trencher due to the fact he had already used his small tractor and had already had 90% of the escavation done. We only escavated what had to be done. We did not feel a trencher was necessary for such a small job. We did however have a machine on tracts with a front loader and a rockhound for fine grading of disturbed lawn areas which we use for a large magarity of our work. This machine is highly varsitle and has substantial power for most of the work we do. If other equip was needed we would have used it. Mr he had several stumps ground out behind his home. However due to the fact the contractor that he hired to ground out the stumps did such a poor job at grinding them out we were only able to get out the smaller roots. We did the best we could to get out as much of the stump as we could. We were hired to add topsoil and grade disturbed lawn areas not grind out stumps. We topsoiled the areas as specified seed and straw was used to stabilize the disturbed areas. He also had some very large mulch rings which were previously installed by another contractor which his other contractor did not finish. We installed weed fabric and double ground mulch to these areas. THe work was completed in a timly fashion and before we left he did approve the work and payment was pd in full.
Our experience with JLS began with an immediate telephone response to our email inquiry. Within a day we had an appointment with Jim, the landscape design specialist. Jim listened to our concerns, had good ideas, drew up some plans, helped us select pavers from a catalog, and a few days later presented us with an itemized estimate. We agreed to the price and the work was scheduled to begin about a week later. We had previously scheduled the work to be done in April by another contractor, who had postponed repeatedly and didn't keep us informed well, so for us, good communication was an imperative. Communication with JLS was excellent! They kept us informed by phone, email and text messaging, and started the work on the scheduled day. James and his crew were extremely professional, friendly and courteous throughout the process. Our main concern was correction of the water problem in the yard- our small townhouse yard was a virtual swamp: too wet to walk through and everything we planted, died. We also had a weedy, sparse lawn, some ugly, overgrown shrubs, and an old brick-on-sand patio that we were forced to weed constantly. In front of the house we had a similar brick-on-sand walkway which was uneven and crumbling. As soon as they arrived, the JLS crew prepped the yard by clearing all the unwanted vegetation. The first job JLS tackled was the patio, which was removed completely- bricks, sand, and underlying plastic, and then reshaped, regraded and replaced with pavers. In the front of the house they had to remove the brick walkway and a section of concrete walkway before installing a new paver walkway. That work took the first two days. During that time they were able to observe the sources of water in our yard. They could see that poor grading caused rainwater to pool in the center of our yard, but in addition, we were also getting the water from our sump pump and our neighbor's sump pump; both discharged under our deck. Even if our neighbor's sump pump water was aimed away from our yard it would have flowed downhill to us, so we decided to tie their sump drains to our new drainage system. The original drainage plan entailed laying porous pipe underground strategically to collect water in the yard and carry it to a deep rock filled trench. However, one heavy rain convinced James that we had too much water to deal with for that plan. Instead, he suggested that additional pipes should be buried to drain the water to an easement where it could then flow to the sewer system. Our final system consisted of two long sections of underground pipe to bring water from the yard, the two sumps and and our downspout to a deep gravel filled trench that runs the width of the yard. Another pipe from the trench cuts through a berm in the back of the yard and terminates in an easement so excess water can flow downhill toward the road behind our house, where it can be drained by sewers. The entire drainage system is underground and almost invisible. The yard was covered with topsoil and regraded. The job was finished with a sod lawn, which is thriving nicely, and mulch in all the bedding areas. To ensure good drainage from the downspouts, the gutters were cleared as well. We have since had some spells of torrential rain and we are happy to see NO flooding in the yard. We've also noticed that our sump pump rarely runs, where it used to run 3-4 times an hour. The sod looks great and is ready for its first mowing. The new patio and walkway are level and very attractive. Finally, James repaired a section of our split rail fence, and the gate, so now we have a nice safe area in which our granddaughter can run. The price for this job was a bit higher than our previous contractor, but we also had a much more complicated solution than the first contractor priced out. In fact, our final cost was higher than the JLS estimate because we needed to address water issues that were worse than we'd known. Overall, we feel the price was good. JLS didn't leave us hanging the way the first contractor did. The work was scheduled promptly and completed expeditiously, and the quality of the work is excellent. Our yard is now a usable, attractive space ready for some new ornamental planting in the beds. We highly recommend JLS for landscaping and hardscaping. It was a pleasure.
Description of Work: The initial plans included the following: Removal of the existing brick patio and installation of new paver patio Re-configure and repair of existing deck stairs Removal of overgrown shrubbery and cleanup of beds Excavation of yard to remove rocks and old landscape plastic installed under entire lawn by previous owner Installation of a french drainage system tied in with sump discharge and downspout to handle excessive water in yard Removal and replacement of walkway at front entryway Installation of sod lawn, and mulch in all beds Clearing of gutters and downspout tied into drainage system During the course of the job some additional work was determined to be necessary: Repair and replacement of portions of fencing Drainage system was expanded to include all water from our sump pump and our neighbor’s sump pump (which was affecting our yard) and drainage was extended away from our property.

We did some of the work ourselves to save money (like demo the old deck, pour concrete footings for pergola, build pergola and plant the beds). JLS was very flexible with that. They also were able to meet an aggressive timeline (we needed to have everything done within 3 weeks of starting for a big outdoor party) and they needed to work with/around 3 other contractors who were putting new siding on the house, new basement windows and tree work. Jim (the landscape architect) was on site almost every day and James (contractor) was there often. The crew was very capable and meticulous. The patio is absolutely awesome. I found that they made good recommendations and helped us make some of the decisions about paver colors/patterns and trees by listening to what we like and suggesting alternatives. The work was done on time and on budget--no surprises. We have since added the pergola and we can now enjoy our beautiful new outdoor space.
Description of Work: JLS provided an architectural landscape design for our backyard. This included excavation, grading, paver patio (over 850 sq ft) and new trees and planting beds. Jim worked with us to get a design that we liked for a price that we could afford.

James and his crew (2 workers) showed up at 9:00 AM sharp. He made a point to meet with me first to go over the project and explain how all work was going to be done. He listened to what I wanted and offered advice on how best to accomplish everything. The stone was pre-purchased as I had hoped to do the work myself. His crew dug out the perimeter of each bed, laid modified stone, and constructed two L-shaped walls. All three of them worked equally hard throughout the day. His stone mason took the extra time to make sure each piece fit in its location but also looked good where it was placed. His other worker was in constant motion supporting the other. The end result was proof of their quality and professionalism and exceeded our expectations. All three were friendly, respectful, and showed that they cared about the work they were doing. Before it was over, James helped offer advice on some other trouble spots on my property. I hope to work with James and his crew again on future projects. My thanks to them.
Description of Work: Provided labor to install fieldstone walls along front of house to create outline of two large flower beds, approximately 30-ft across in total and on average 1-ft high. Price included stone base and mortar material. Fieldstone material was pre-purchased by owner.

Good. The job lasted a little longer then expected, but it was worth the wait. They had great attention to detail.
Description of Work: We got our entire front, back and sides of existing plants and deck removed. In the front JLS created a walkway to our front door and laid bluestone over the concrete slab. They installed proper plants that will grow with the house. On the sides, we planted new plants where there was dirt. In the back we removed an old wooden deck and made a raised slate patio with seat wall. On the other side we created wonderful grand stairs down to the ground level slate patio.

For years my sump pumps have caused problems at the front of my house because they drain into an area that is impermeable clay, creating a nuisance all year and a hazard in winter. James was one of 3 A-rated Angies List landscaping contractors I contacted about the job, and the only one who responded quickly with a good plan at a reasonable price. The day of the job he and a worker arrived with a small backhoe and a load of gravel. After finding the underground drain lines for the sump pumps JLS excavated a deep hole for the drywell and filled it with gravel. Top soil was replaced, soil was seeded, and a pop-up outlet installed against the chance of overflow. The system works really well, and has solved the problem.
Description of Work: JLS put in a dry well near the front of my property to collect ground water from my sump pumps. They replaced the top soil and seeded the area so it should be invisible in the spring.
Great, honest guy who showed up on time, did a great job cleaning the gutters and gave me an honest appraisal of additional work we are thinking about doing. Went above and beyond once he got his ladder out and even helped me with a flood light issue. Will definitely call him again.
Description of Work: Cleaned gutters and provided estimate on backyard terracing.
