The tech did fill my a/c unit with freon but did not correct the leak - nor did he even attempt to correct the leak. In addition, he promised to return the next day and add some brass caps and drop off my receipt (he did not have any receipts in his truck the day of the work). He did not return the next day at all. I left him a few voicemails and he did not return my calls. When I left another voicemail and told him I would stop payment on his check - he returned the call and emailed me a bill. Needless to say, two days later the a/c stopped cooling again. A different company came out and prompty noticed the major leak and repaired it. They said the other company and quot;did nothingand quot; to fix it and no new caps were installed. I would never use this company again.
Description of Work: A/C unit was not cooling. The tech came out promptly to start the repair. The tech filled the unit with cooling liquid and 'said' he replaced the copper caps and fixed the leak. He also stated he would stop by the next day to add some additional caps and give me an invoice.

It always goes great!!! They are prompt, they keep their promises, and they are professional. The company is an established business and they value their good name. -Do remember that these ARE professionals, so ask advice and listen to the response you get. We always feel as though the whole teams wants to find the best solution for our needs at the best price. -Don't take my word for it. Call Woodruff and Smith!
Description of Work: We continue to have a wonderful relationship with the knowledgeable professionals who own and run this company and we appreciate their professionally trained employees, as well. We recommend them highly to anyone! W & S provides us with a variety of quality services at reasonable prices and with excellent responsiveness to our needs, whether we are calling on a cold Christmas Eve or a sweltering Fourth of July. They installed our whole house air conditioner when we moved into our home, are always available for advice, information, and maintenace or service on our existing heating and cooling systems, and they also installed and maintain our kennel building's heating/cooling unit! The air conditioner went in with minimal interruption to my day. I love when that happens. The employees did the work quickly and neatly and the unit works great. The work was overseen by one of the company's owners and all involved were efficient, experienced, and easy to have in my home. There have been a number of occasions when we have needed inspections, maintenance, and service, and we always call W & S for our needs, as their response time is very quick and their wilingness to work around our schedules is much appreciated. We thought about using a closer company and did call them for a consultation. It was a bad experience that cost me time and money and did not accomplish anything, whereas the W & S folks were here the next day with an estimate and information. When we built our kennel buidling, we sought input from W & S as to the way(s) to heat and cool the building for our bullmastiffs. They listened to our needs, gave us a number of economical options, and worked with us to find the best answer. We love the unit we had them install and it does an great job.

I am satisfied I got a professional service from Woodruff and Smith.
Description of Work: I have a Trane heat pump. One fine morning I saw water seeping through the indoor unit and adjacent bath room floor was flooded with water. Before I called Woodruff and Smith,I called another company. They had being doing maintenance service for me. They said I have a big leak of freon ( Refrigerant) . Instead of spending money to find the leak, they recommended to go for new heat pumps and inside air handler. They started to give me estimates and they never cared about my flooded bath room . The technician left with his estimates. I called Woodruff and Smith ( for a second opinion). The owner of the company himself came for the service. He verified the level of refrigerant and found low but not low enough to cause the water being frozen. He suspected the drain pipe and asked me for its location. I did not have any clue and there were lot of household things stored in the boiler room around the indoor unit. He used a borescope camera and found the drain pipe. There was a sink in the floor and the drain pipe was moved away from the sink. The water instead of draining into the sink, it is being flooded on the floor. Mr. Woodruff moved the pipe direct into the sink and since then my bathroom is dry. They will come again to reroute the drain pipe from the indoor unit. He will help me to find the leak by injecting a jelly type substance in the outer unit. He also will recommend me with a new unit if the leak is not traceable.

The installation was fantastic. The service guys that who did the installation really did a very good job. The person who came to do the estimate was really unreliable as he promised me paper work and I never got a paper work and he never returned phone calls. Their price was great.

DO NOT HIRE THESE GUYS! I moved into my house approximately 2 years ago. Beforehand, we received a flyer in the mail for a discount on their services, so my fiancee and I decided to give them a shot. My Dad is hvac certified, so he bought the air handler and heat pump at cost. He also owns a few rental properties, so before John came out, I spoke with him a few times and made it abundantly clear to leave the old furnace because my Dad wanted to see if he could fix it up to use in one of his rentals. Long story short, when they were finished, I came home to a huge pile of old ductwork and the old furnace was gone. I immediately called John and he said his "guys must have had their wires crossed" and "it would be impossible to track it down." That most likely meant that they were in the process of refurbishing it to sell to someone else.
Description of Work: They removed a gas furnace and installed new basement ductwork and a new electric air handler and heat pump.

they were very expedient in coming to my house to replace a 50 year old boiler. Srmitty brought some colorful brochers of new Tran boiler. he told me they were made in Italy, but failed to tell me I could not buy replacement parts. i also told him my plans to replace the radient heat tubes with Wirsbo tubing in the floors rather than the old tubes in the ceiling. as well as expanding it to the sun room flooring. he said it would be fine. When it came time to do the tubing he was very difficult to get a hold of. I finally contacted another heating man who told me that the tubes in the floor required more heat and that the furnace he sold me did not have enough BTU's to do the job. I thn had Upnor design me a heating system and sure enough I will have to get a new boiler... Hence I wasted $3,000 on a bunch of joes who simply wanted to unload thier junk and make a profit. I am now working with a HVAC man recommended by Upnor who has tons of experience with radiant heat.

After the compressor was ordered, the repairman came as scheduled. Installed it and now I am cool.
Description of Work: Called Woodruff because air was not cold. In fact, when on the temp in house went up. They found there was a leak in the compressor. We had the a/c installed in 2007. We have a Trane with an extended warranty so there was no charge.

UPDATE: This company is now working with us on our failing furnace. Mr Wodruff just left after coming by short notice to look at our furnace that wasn't working. He is a super nice guy and I had a great time talking to him. He got our furnace working and would not take any payment. He did not excuse our past issues rather just went a little into explaining why some of the issues came to be. I am very sympathetic now and am excited to work with the company again. I am happy that they are working to right wrongs. Leaving the original complaint for now. We plan on using this company to have a new furnace installed. I am hoping that the results of that will give me cause to clean the slate. First, I never give bad reviews for anything. I am always one to praise the deserving and let the undeserving be. I hate to give anyone a bad review based on one experience but in this case I am so livid I can’t bite my tongue. In short: they installed the central air unit on May 13th and nearly a month and 4 visits later, making arrangements for someone to be home and leaving work early over and over, we are still without a working air conditioning! We had them scheduled for a new furnace install as well but cancelled that and I doubt they care but that is $2,200 they are loosing in business from us. Details: When we kept trying to contact them after their 3rd visit because the furnace fan wouldn’t stop running and it sounded like a train going through the basement with no results of cooling the house. After 4 days John Smith had the nerve to call my husband and chew him out for blowing up his phone! Meanwhile my husband had left him a voice message explaining what the problem was and John seemed shocked in a kind-of an and quot;oh, well why didn't you just say so?and quot; manner... well why didn't he answer his phone or return our calls for 4 days! I suppose our measly $2800 isn't worth picking up the phone once they had already collected. When we pay that much for central air and the house is still 80* and the walls are shaking and floors are vibrating to a noise so loud you can't hear yourself think, of course we were going to call until he answered! I already gave them a good review on Service Magic before it was clear that they couldn't get this right and weren't going to cooperate with us and if I can figure out how to change that review I certainly will. Results: It seems that we need a new furnace in order to get the AC to have enough oomph to cool the house. So if you do not heed my warning here and go ahead and use this company, be sure you ask about whether the air conditioning they are installing will actually work before you pay them to install it. I'm not an expert so I relied on them to give us an estimate based on all the individual circumstances and we could not ourselves have foreseen that our old furnace would be a problem because although it is old, it has been very reliable. It was their job to consider these things before giving us an estimate and base it on all the circumstances and with an outcome that it would work in the end.
Description of Work: Air conditioning unit installed. Also had them scheduled for a new furnace install but canceled it and will be looking elsewhere for that work to be done.

Response from Woodruff & Smith Heating & Cooling Inc
It is unfortunate that the outcome of this client's experience with Woodruff and Smith ended in this manner. As a rebuttal to the member's comments, I am providing my account of the actions that occurred during this installation. Woodruff and Smith was hired to install a new air conditioning system in the member's household. When my technicians arrived to install the new air conditioning unit and inspected the existing equipment further, they discovered that the existing furnace, which was an older style, was a heating-only unit. I informed the member that the existing furnace needed to be updated with a new motor, controls and blower section in order to retrofit the equipment to operate appropriately, accept the new air conditioning system and make everything function properly. However, we were able to make the existing air conditioning system work after the end of the installation on the first day. My technician revisited the job to install the new fan, blower housing and electronic controls the following day. At that point, the technician advised me that the blower mounting that we suspected would work actually did not work. I advised the member that we would have to return with a new blower housing. We returned with the new blower housing and controls, mounted everything, and the technician advised me that everything was working properly. On day 3, the member called my personal cell phone (which I provide to all of my customers) to advise me that there was a loud noise in the furnace. Because of weather conditions, I was very busy with other customers that did not have running air conditioning, attempted to return his calls, and received no answer, but my intent was to make arrangements to fix the issue on their schedule. However, I also had to deal with other customers that, in my opinion, had more pressing issues (as in no air conditioning at all). I sent out a technician to service the unit and fix the problem according to the member's availability. The retro-fit modifications were made to the old furnace and I informed the member at that time that since he was happy with the original outcome and verbally agreed to purchase a new furnace, we would not charge him for the upgrades to his old furnace. The member agreed to have the new furnace installed so all would function properly at some future date, and then proceeded to decline the new installation. To this date, I have not charged (and will not charge) the member the $500 cost to upgrade his old furnace to function properly and provide air conditioning while waiting for his new furnace. My cell phone is 412.523.8843. The instructions (if I do not answer the phone) are to call the main company number at 412.831.6463. Had the member followed that instruction, especially since their calls were outside of our normal working hours, they would have received immediate service from my service manager. However, the member continued to call my cell phone numerous times within a short period of time, of about 30 minutes, when I was not available to answer the call. Had he/she followed the instructions, the problem could have been alleviated much sooner than it did and we all would have been happier with the final outcome. P.S. I suspect that the technician attempted to sell the member a new furnace at a lesser cost as a "side job". That technician is no longer employed at Woodruff and Smith as we were suspect of his practices.

Our AC was on the fritz. Called at night and said I'd like to get someone out the following day if possible. The service said they'd have someone call in the morning. I ended up having to call again when I hadn't heard by 10:45. They said someone would call shortly. By 1, still nobody had called. I was about ready to give up and find another Angie's List recommendation when I got a call. (I was working at home to try to meet someone, so getting someone here was really critical.) Relieved I stuck with them because the guy was prompt, efficient and provided great service. Fixed the problem -- a fried capacitor -- and also looked over the machine/fluids while at it.
Description of Work: The AC was blowing but not cold-air. Replaced fried capacitor.

Service was very prompt and professional. Our furnace stopped working on Sunday evening on a holiday weekend. I received a call back within 15 minutes. Within two hours, Mr. Woodruff had come and fixed the problem. Although he only needed to replace some wiring, he also cleaned the fan which was making some noise. I definitely recommend them!

It was great! We received bids from 4 HAVOC dealers. While Woodruff and Smith wasn't the least expensive, we felt we were getting the benefit of their experience, professionalism, and customer service in addition to the Trane products to be installed. The vendor selection process took a bit longer than we expected, and when I called John Smith to let him know we had selected his firm, he gave me an installation date that was further out that what we desired. It was getting hot toward the end of August, and waiting until later in September wasn't going to work for us. He had a temporary unit installed for us the next business day! This really made us feel comfortable and confident that we made the right choice. The installers were courteous and professional, and John Smith came by the day after the installation was complete to make sure we knew how to work the new system. One other positive aspect for working with Woodruff and Smith is their responsiveness. I had a lot of follow up questions for all the bidders - some would take a few days to finally get in touch with. John Smith always called back promptly (a few times within 15 minutes!) and answered our questions thoughtfully. The system has been working well since late September. The heat pump is really quiet, as is the furnace. The programmable thermostat is great, and the comfort is just what we were hoping to get in a new HVAC system.
