Description of Work: The memory stick where I'd been storing quite a bit of work-related files quit on me, meaning I couldn't get to any of the data stored on the stick. I tried one place for data recovery, and was charged $200 for a diagnostic and was then told it would cost nearly $1000 to fix if I wanted it done within a week. I could pay $600 to have it fixed over an indeterminate period if I wanted to cut my costs. Shocked, I picked up the stick and took it to Pittsburgh Computer Solutions. They couldn't help me, but they did try, and it only cost $49 for a diagnostic. They were kind enough to mail the memory stick back to me and refer me to a more heavy-duty data recovery company.

Description of Work: We have been using PCS (Pittsburgh Computer Service) for years, and finally, I am writing about them. I believe once one finds a trustworthy and excellent service - stick with them. My father turned 94 this January and in his 70's taught himself how to use a computer. He had been using a "relic" for his computer. My family decided for his 94th we would buy a new computer, monitor, keyboard, speakers and an all in one printer, scanner, copy and fax machine. Since we had been using PCS we relied upon John, one of the technicians (what a fabulous person), who has been helping us for years and knows what my Dad can and cannot do, to put together a package for us. Several e-mails back and forth we decided upon the package. John came out the other day to install everything. He tested the speakers (old and new) to see which ones were better, tested the font to make sure it was big enough for my Dad, made sure the mouse was working at the right speed, went through all of the icons (and the size of the icons) to make sure my Dad could see them and understand them, relabeled some icons that had new names but changed them to familiar names my Dad could recognize. John did everything from soup to nuts. PCS also has "remote capability" and we signed on for that in case we would need help and noone could come out to help us.

Description of Work: On Easter Sunday my computer started making strange, crackling sounds. I called In Home PC on Monday. They said I could bring in the hard drive (tower) and they d run a diagnostic on it ($45) or a tech could come to the house and diagnose the problem there($75/hour). Since I work from home, I chose the second option. The appointment was scheduled for Thursday, 9 a.m. Joe arrived on time and immediately started working on the computer. The hard drive was shot, and since the computer was nearly 4 years old, Joe recommended a new one. He called the shop. They had a Dell (with Windows XP, which I wanted) complete with a 19-inch flat screen monitor, a 3-year warranty, and could be installed immediately.

Description of Work: Joe came to house to identify problem, ran computer diagnostic, hard drive gone. He told me I needed a new hard drive and quoted me an approximate price. Replaced computer hard drive loaded all programs that were lost and loaded SP2. Installed drives for existing printers; reloaded Virus program and email program. Reconnected PC, sound card not working, came back out and reinstalled sound card drivers.
