The first problem: Within 1 hour of ordering the mat, we phoned and asked them to hold off that part of the order as we were having second thoughts about using that system for underfloor heating. We were told we could not cancel the order as the fax had been sent to the supplier "and they will already have started making the mat" (difficult to believe within 1 hour!). If we insisted on cancelling, there would be a 25% fee ($250). We were told that the usual 3 day grace period a consumer has to change their minds does not apply as this was a 'made to measure' order. As it turned out, there was nothing made to measure about it ... it was simply two strips of wired matting which we then had to cut to fit. So we did not cancel. Secondly, we increased our order of ceremic floor tiles. They estimated that we required an additional 4 boxes. However the extra tiles were not actually delivered and we ran out of tiles. Luckily we found something that was pretty close to match at Home Depot. We were credited by Wallcoverings Ltd for the tiles that were not received. However, had we not phoned at the moment we had to cancel those extra boxes, Wallcoverings would have sent off another fax to their supplier, and we would have had to pay 25% handling fee. The other interesting thing is that they do not take back any less than 5 boxes of tiles ... so we would would have had 3 boxes of expensive tiles left over that we could not return but had paid for! The Wallcoverings Ltd returns policy is very inflexible, not at all customer friendly (unlike Home Depot) and they do not bring it to your attention before you sign their contract. Lesson learned: ALWAYS READ THE SMALL PRINT! We thought we were doing the right thing going to a specialist, and there is no doubt the quality of the tiles is higher than we would have bought at the usual DIY stores, but their customer care is not a patch on either Home Depot or Lowe's. We would not recommend this company to anyone.
Description of Work: We purchased a range of materials required for our kitchen remodelling project. These included an underfloor heating mat, ceramic tiles for floor and backsplash, grout, faucet and hardware.

Response from WALLCOVERING LTD
There are several inaccuracies in this report: First, he didn't mention that he had taken well over a week to make his decision regarding the floor-warming system. This was the first item on which he was given a quote and didn't visit our store in regards to the tile until well after that. Once he did place the order, we immediately placed the order with our supplier to ensure his job could commence as quickly as possible. He did not call "within 1 hour" of placing his order, though he did call within a day. He did claim that he had a "3 day grace period," and this is simply not true. It has nothing to do with the mat being custom made -- it isn't and he was never told it was. It has everything to do with the fact that, with the exception of mortgages and certain other contracts signed in the home, there is no such thing as a "3 day grace period." My company ordered material based on a decision that he made over the period of a week and then signed for. To cancel that order, my company would have incurred cost (the supplier had already pulled the items he ordered from their warehouse and was in the midst of shipping them -- they charge to find and pull orders from the line). I offered to hold the order for 24 hours and allow him even more time to decide whether he wanted to continue with the order, or cover the cancellation charges. He chose to continue with the order without us placing the hold. As for the additional tile -- we never visited his home or made our own measurements. We based our quantities on measurements he gave us either from his own measuring or from measuring done by his contractor. We placed orders based on that, and yes, we were able to cancel his order at no charge when he decided to go a different direction (apparently matching the tile was not of great concern as the tile was going underneath cabinets). Again, the lack of the cancellation charge had nothing to do with how quickly the member canceled, but was rather because the tile vendor we used doesn't charge to cancel orders. Our paperwork states that our restocking fee is up to 25% -- it may be zero, or the full 25%, it just depends on the costs we incur when a customer changes their mind. We do our best to ask for favors from vendors to prevent these fees and do not make a profit on these charges. He was in our store recently and appeared very happy and made no mention of his dissatisfaction. Had he mentioned something to me or one of my staff, rather than just posting a negative review on the internet, I would have certainly seen what else I could do to satisfy this customer. We have a 35-year history and a great reputation and following in our area, and this has everything to do with our commitment to making our customers not just happy, but thrilled with every project the do with us.

They were helpful and knowledgeable. I do believe their prices are higher than the large hardware stores, but I am all about helping smaller businesses stay afloat and I certainly do not think I was overcharged. I would recommend them and soon will be working with them to remodel my kitchen.
Description of Work: I had worked with Stuart and Gene to remodel our master bath.

The sketches were incomplete, with no measurements, and were entirely based on sketches I gave them at the start of the project (theirs were neater.) The purchase order was unclear & inaccurate. The order was signed 2/9/07. The order states returns are allowed. I canceled by telephone within 2 hours. I called again next day. On Monday I sent 2 letters by fax and went into store to talk with owner. He refused to refund the deposit. On Tues. I complained to credit card company and sent registered letter. Owner sent the order to a collection agency (because the credit card company reversed the transaction)instead of resolving the issue. No order was ever placed by him. His trying to force me to pay him for nothing has no legal basis and is unconscionable.
Description of Work: A designer, Tom Roggio, for the company came to my home and measured the rooms then drew sketches of a new bathroom and kitchen for my house. The sketches were "released" to me after I paid a $1000 design fee and a $5000 pre-order payment. I interviewed 5 contractors they sent to bid on the work. The company then handed me a purchase order for the bathroom materials which they pressured me to sign and asked for an additional $24,000 to place the order. The whole time the designer was bullying me over objections I raised about the prices and items on the list I didn't want and telling me to hurry as he had another meeting. Unfortunately, I felt since I already gave them $5000 for only a credit towards the order, I was committed to buying from them. All the items were at least double normal retail prices. As soon as I got home, I realized my mistake and called to cancel the order.
