No problems from start to finish. John and his crew examplify the meaning of "professional". Stop searching. This is the company you're trying to find.
Description of Work: Existing roof was stripped clean and replaced with all new material. Having a great selection of shingle colors and patterns, the new roof looks fantastic! Also had the skylight replaced to avoid future problems.

Very well. They replaced a difficult pitched roof, start to finish, within two days. Additionally, as they replaced the flashing around chimneys, they repaired a large portion of a T111-enclosed chimney that was weather-rotted.

Excellently. The crew arrived promptly, ready to work, all business, with steady clean up the entire time. Everything was done as promised, well supervised, and all my questions answered. The workmanship and attitude were simply superb.
Description of Work: An entirely new roof for house, breezeway and garage, with assessment of underlying wood deck and replacement as necessary. We have dormers, valleys and porch roofs with metal overlay. The metal overlay did not need to be redone, but all intersections were addressed properly.

My experience was terrific; great. He's very good; excellent. He really was very fair, very good, and I would call him again. He did an excellent job. He put in an all new 40 ft gutter and also a downspout. They were fair. Let me just say that his price was fair. We have had people in here who are a zero. This guy is absolutely wonderful. We would hire him back. We will get him back. With the storms coming through, I'm crossing my fingers that we won't need him but if we did, we definitely would call him.
Description of Work: He had to replace about 40 feet of gutters and also a downspout that had been destroyed in one of the storms.

Excellent. - Of the the 4 roofers I received a quote from JM Shinn was the only one to supply written estimate and reference list. - Communication both with John and his office staff was great; all questions were answered in a timely manner. - Scheduled sooner than other three bids. - Lowest price of the 4 bids received. Provided a price per square when asked. - On Work Day: (John told we had a perfect day...only 3 sheets plywood needed to be replaced & shingles delivered at the right time) - 7.30am: Team arrived (just like I was told) - 9.45am: old roof torn off by, 2.5 sheets were added - 2pm: New roof completed - 3pm: Full yard clean-up and team gone.
Description of Work: ** Directly from written contract** Work to be Performed - All old roofing to be removed to the existing wood deck (one layer of existing roofing). Any bad wood will be removed and replaced with the corresponding thickness roof sheathing (up to 3 sheets of plywood at no additional cost). - Install 6 ft. of ice and water shield along the bottom of all main sections of roof. Install 1.5 ft. of ice and water shield along adjoining walls. - Install new felt paper over the remainder of the roof deck (30 lb). - Install a new GAF HD architectural shingle system over roof section (color is customer’s choice) using 1.25 inch galvanized roofing nails, 5 to 6 nails per shingle for max. wind protection. - Install new flashing as needed along all adjoining walls (where roofing meets sided walls of house). - All exhaust pipes will receive new pipe collars. - Install a new power attic fan, roof top install and flashing only (fan will have both thermostat and humidistat controls). Note: we do not wire the fan. - All debris will be removed upon completion of job, which includes running of magnet around house and yard to pick up loose nails. - Price includes replacement of up to 3 sheets of plywood, if any additional sheets are replaced they will be billed at $55 per sheet.

The job went as a classical example of the perfect contractor performance It started with evaluation and explanation of the future job details and cost, I got a contract proposal with 30 more references, the job was done as scheduled, as specified, in compliance with the standards, no unexpected expenses or additional work, the ground was cleaned. Clear, supportive and professional communications from the first call till the end

john showed up as promised started early and not long into it called me with bad news (not totally unexpected) the plywood would also have to be replaced. some may consider this terrible news but after looking at it with John I was glad he didn't just go over the bad plywood. We revisited the price and once we agreed on a price he was ready. The weather didn't cooperate with us however we spoke most every day until it got nice enough to do the job. Again he was there early as promised. John and his crew worked all day till about 7pm they finished the entire roof including cleanup about 30 square. John and all his crew were very professional and cordial to me and my family.

The problem started early. My 2500.00 deposit check was given to Mr. shinn on 08/22/2015 so he was scheduled to start the work early on. However the work did not start until about the third week on October. The long delay was blamed on Mr. Shinn's wife "She is a blonde and you know how they are". A major concern is that Mr. Shinn had his employee's work in the dark which is very dangerous. I had to remind Mr. Shinn on a particular day that it was too dark and they needed to stop. His judgment in my opinion is very poor. Specific concerns: a. Ice accumulation has been a major problem because my home is at elevation and ice damming is a major problems. Mr. Shinn agreed to install heat tape. He then refused to install the tape. Last winter without the heat tape in place, water ran into the home causing considerable damage. b. 2 large skylights where installed. They where not registered with the manufacturer for the 10 year warranty to go into affect (Velux skylights). The glass in both units is scratched or marked in some way. Had a problem with the installation of the flashing on one unit on the northside of the home. c. The home has a large overhang that is supported by beams, the underside of the overhang is constructed of 3/4 x 6 tongue and groove cedar boards. Mr. Shinn used a power nailer to secure the shingles over this area and he used nails that where too long. These nails pierced and cracked the cedar board. The tips of the nails are visible. On the original roof the nails where the proper length and put in place by hand. Mr. Shinns solution to problem was to install an aluminum soffitt to cover the nails and cracked cedar boards. d. The attic ventilation strip that goes on the ridge of the roof was not properly installed. It apparently was not sealed at the ends and allowed numerous rodents such as red squirrels and mice to enter. Eventually these rodents made their way into the house. They chewed and tore down chunks of installation in the attic. The carpet was torn in the great room. The owner of Green Man Exterminator.com(on angieslist.com) observed the rodents entering my home from the poorly installed ridge vents. e. The roof over the front porch has an eye brow shape. the drip strip on the edge of the eye brow shaped portion of the roof line was poorly done and does not follow the contour of the roof. The great room has a dormer with a large window. The window has considerable rot and is generally in bad shape. Prior to construction the window was covered in plastic to prevent water from entering the great room. The plastic was removed during construction. Mr. Shinn promised to replace the plastic after the completion of his work on my home. However he fused to replace the plastic even after being asked to so several times. I had to replace the plastic because water was entering the interior of the great room. I had a great deal of difficulty finding someone to replace this plastic. On the positive side the following tasks where more than adequately completed: a. The removal of the existing shingles b. Cleaning up the debris from the roof removal. c. With the exception of the problem with application of the shingle overhang on the bridgeline, the remainder of the shingles seem to be applied well.
Description of Work: Mr. Shinn made it clear from the start of construction that he is in charge. He usually ignored my questions and concerns. Throughout his time on my property he would not address my question or concerns. If the old shingles had not been removed, I would have terminated Mr. Shinn early on. Below please find and extensive of complaints. I made every effort to contact Mr. Shinn to discuss my concerns with his work. He ignored my calls and for this reason I am forced to write a negative review on Mr. Shinns work and abusive behavior.

Response from John M Shinn Roofing LLC
Wow.. Let me start by saying that my company has won the Super Service award 5 years in a row (top 5 % of Angies List), and there's a reason for that, we ALWAYS do good work, I'm there to make sure of it.. We have aprox. 105 REVIEWS where we actually did work for someone, AND THIS IS THE ONLY REVIEW WHERE ANYONE CRITICIZES OUR WORK.. I'll do my best to respond to his numerous complaints.. I'd also like to point out that I've offered to have a representative from the manufacturer come out and inspect his roof AND agreed to fix (free of charge) any issue found by the manu. to have caused damage to his home. The member has never responded, shocker.. The member isn't claiming that HIS ROOF LEAKS, HE IS CLAIMING ICE AND RODENT DAMAGE?? First, for the record I asked to have A COPY OF THE CONTRACT, AND OTHER VARIOUS PRINT OUTS FROM THE MANUFACTURER POSTED BY ANGIE'S LIST, so ANYONE reading his review can CLEARLY SEE THAT THE MEMBERS CLAIMS ARE CLEARLY NOT TRUE. I have kept a file, IF ANYONE WOULD LIKE TO REVIEW, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK, one look at the contract alone disproves most of his complaints. The deposit amount, the extended/optional skylight warranty, installing heat wires, the nail length, installing new plastic around the window he needs to have replaced, etc., are CLEARLY INDICATED, OR NOT, in the contract.. So here goes my attempt to respond to his numerous complaints, I will start with the big ones, WHERE HE CLAIMS THAT MY WORK, OR LACK OF IS RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGING HIS HOUSE.. 1. Any type of roof, even perfectly installed, can receive ice damage. There a whole lot of factors beyond the roofing that set the stage for ice damming, amount of insulation, ventilation, orientation of the roof to the sun, design of roof sections (angles), outside temps, severity of the winter, etc. The bottom line here is A. the MEMBER HAD ALREADY EXPERIENCED ICE DAMAGE the previous winters before we did the roof (he pointed it out to me during the estimate as an area of concern), B. Although I am the one who suggested the heat wires to him, WE NEVER HAD AN AGREEMENT TO INSTALL THEM., because C. The MEMBER NEVER INDICATED A DESIRE TO INSTALL THE HEAT WIRES UNTIL AFTER WE COMPLETED HIS ROOF. We did however install more ice shield then required along the bottoms, in all valleys, and around his skylights to help PREVENT ice damage. I EMPHASIZE prevent because ICE SHIELD ALONE does prevent ice damage the majority of the time, BUT, it's not a 100% guarentee, ice damage can still occur. 2. The rodents- AGAIN, I saw rodent traps, rodent poo, and damaged insulation in his attic while doing the estimate, long before I ever did any work. AND, the bottom line is there is no "end capping" with the newer styles of ridge vent, they are "self capped". Our installation of the ridge vent was done correctly. Rodents ARE NOT A ROOFING ISSUE unless you have holes in your roof which would surely leak.. So, I just want to re-emphasize that although it's a little confusing to discern from reading his review, his claims of damage really aren't "roofing issues", he doesn't claim the roof leaks or is damaged, he claims ice and rodent damage. As far as the rest of his many complaints go- the deposit amount was $500, not $2500, and he was told that it would be a 4-6 week wait period, I have the amount, check # etc. on the contract.. BTW, contrary to the members claim, I haven't heard a word from him since shortly after completing his roof (last Novemeber). He HAD NO COMPLAINTS AT ALL ABOUT THE JOB AT THAT TIME, BUT WAS ASKING FOR ME TO INSTALL HEAT WIRES AND PLASTIC AROUND HIS WINDOWS. I also spent A WHOLE LOT OF TIME addressing his questions and concerns FROM DAY 1. I can honestly say that I have way more time spent with the member both before and during the job than just about any customer I can think of. THAT REALLY BECAME THE ISSUE.. I have no problems with people observing us working or asking questions.. PROVIDED THEY DON'T INTERFERE WITH OUR ABILITY TO DO THE JOB, or ANYONE'S SAFETY, INCLUDING THEIR OWN.. However, the members questions/concerns/observing WAS BASICALLY CONSTANT, AND definitely interfered with our ability to work.. I had to ask him several times not to stand/walk around beneath where we were working so he didn't get hit with debris, and a few times needed to tell him directly that I needed to get back to work. I was spending more time answering more less the same questions over and over, then I was working.. The member watched me install EVERY SINGLE SHINGLE, WITH CONSTANT INPUT TO MAKE SURE he liked the angles i was using around the concave portion of the roof (the section of roof with the drip edge he complains about NOW in his review). I HAVE NEVER ALLOWED ANYONE TO MICRO-MANAGE MY WORK LIKE THAT, but, in his case I figured it was the only way to make him happy.. Truth is there came a point that I could no longer gracefully handle his "supervision". The second day on the job (he has quite a big, and fairly steep residential roof) he called me complaining that my crew was there, EVEN THOUGH I TOLD him the night before that would be the case because I had to go dump his old roofing. HE CALLS ME THAT MORNING TO INSIST THAT MY CREW CAN'T BE THERE WITHOUT ME. Keep in mind, THEY WEREN'T EVEN ON THE ROOF, THEY WERE SITTING IN THE TRUCKS WAITING FOR ME.. I told them not to start without me because I assumed he wouldn't like it. I told him I would be there shortly and they wouldn't start without me.. NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR HIM, THEY COULDN'T EVEN SIT IN THE TRUCKS WITHOUT ME THERE.. When I told him that was unreasonable I got, "I work for him", etc.. The bottom line is I then had to let him know I would no longer deal with his over the top micro management, he didn't care for that too much. As far as the nails penetrating the underside of his overhangs goes, THAT WAS HIS CHOICE, AND CLEARLY INDICATED IN THE CONTRACT. I told him that as per manufacturer's specs, due to the thickness of the wood, EITHER THE NAILS SHOW A LITTLE, OR THE MANUFACTURER'S WARRANTY WOULD BE VOID in those sections. His SKYLIGHTS ARE COVERED UNDER WARRANTY, but the warranty he references in his review IS AN EXTENDED, OPTIONAL WARRANTY LEVEL OFFERED BY THE MANUFACTURER, AGAIN, NOT IN OUR AGREEMENT, HE NEVER EXPRESSED INTEREST IN THAT WARRANTY. The skylights were not damaged. They were rooftop delivered by our supplier, still in the original packaging, and promptly installed. He was standing right next to me while my crew mounted them, AND now 1 year later, they were damaged when installed.. Amazing.. In closing, I have to say that 16 yrs, and THOUSANDS of customers later, this is the most ridiculous situation I have ever encountered. The members roof was installed well, it doesn't leak, and the rodents are a living in the woods issue, not because we didn't install the ridge vent correctly. I honestly haven't heard a word of complaint from this guy until a year later. AND FOR SURE, I always stand behind my work.

A terrific job by John and his crew, and Chris (John?s wife). The roof looks good and workmanship is of high quality. The overall experience was unbeatable. All contact and communication was done by phone text and e-mail. I was always able to reach Chris or John whenever we had questions or concerns. John?s efforts went above and beyond the required roofing work.? Prior to starting the job, we told John that we had concerns about possible damage from squirrels living in the ceiling. John surveyed the damage, immediately called me, took and sent us photos. To our astonishment, electrical wiring was damaged and all the ceiling insulation had been removed by the squirrels. We couldn't have been more pleased and would highly recommend John M Shinn Roofing.
Description of Work: Removed all old roofing to the existing wood deck (single layer). Removed and replaced bad wood with the corresponding thickness roof sheathing. Installed a new GAF HD architectural shingle system over entire roof (Patriot Red).
