John M. Shinn Roofing, LLC was founded in 2000 by John Shinn with a vision of offering Stroudsburg and the surrounding areas “Quality Work, Honest Pricing and On Site Owner Supervision”. Since its inception, J.M.Shinn Roofing has grown to become one of the leading trusted roofing companies in the Pocono area. The name is built on a strong reputation of providing top quality service with strict values on integrity, hard work, respect, intuition and quality workmanship that exceeds all expectations. We are a family owned and operated roofing/siding replacement business, priding ourselves on quality work and customer satisfaction.
Both John and his wife were very pleasant and professional. Estimate was in line with others, but John did provide more work in his estimate. He replaced our entire roof, a skylight, and installed two attic fans. Everything was done in a day, and the area was left in pristine condition. We were very pleased with all aspects of this job, and would certainly use him again. We highly recommend John.

All work was performed as stated on time and done right.
Description of Work: John gave me a very thorough explanation of what he and his crew would be doing to replace my entire roof. After giving me a very reasonable estimate they showed up on day scheduled right on time. They finished the job on time as stated and did a great cleanup afterwards. Very honest and professional company. They did an excellent job and I highly recommend them. Will most likely use them again in future for other work.

I was thrilled with the entire job, from initial contact to completion. John called when he said he would, scheduled the job quickly to accommodate me (I had a leak in my kitchen roof) and was on site throughout the roofing process. He did everything he said he would, plus more (like he even cleaned out my gutters while he was at it). Right from the beginning, I felt that John was honest and his prices were more than fair. I had complete confidence in his skills and that of his workers. He completed my roof and cleaned everything up in ONE day. I would recommend John Shinn Roofing to everyone. You won't find a better roofer, anywhere.
Description of Work: All old roofing removed to existing wood deck. Bad wood removed and replaced, up to 3 sheets at no charge, $50 per sheet after that. Installed new drip edge around entire perimeter of roof. Installed 6 ft of ice and water shield along bottom of all sections roofline, 3 feet around perimeter of chimney. Installed new felt paper over remainder of roof. Install new GAF starter strips along all side eve edges. Installed a new Timberline HD architectural shingle system over entire roof using 1.25 inch galvanized roofing nails, 5 to 6 nails per shingle for max wind protection. Installed new pipe collars on all exhaust pipes. Changed all chimney flashing and counter-flashing. Installed a new rolled ridge vent along the length of the roof ridge, installed corresponding GAF shingle caps using 2.5 inch galvanized roofing nails. All debris removed upon completion, including running of magnet around the house and yard to pick up loose nails.

John was very professional. He and his wife, who I spoke with on the phone made me feel very much at ease. From my initial meeting with him, he knows his stuff. He took the time to answer all my questions about my roof. He gave me a price quote, which I agreed to. From there it was smooth sailing. John and his crew were very punctual on the scheduled date and time. Very efficient crew. The day was a tough day weather wise. Cold, windy, occasional snow flurries. They still completed the job in the time frame he quoted. Excellent cleanup after the roof was completed. The roof looks great! I must say, I'm very satisfied with the job J.M. Shinn performed.

My house has about 1500 square feet of roof, with three sections: The front Porch, the back porch, and the main structure, which is about a 30 degree slope. The front and back porches are probably just 5 or 10 degrees of slope. John responded quickly to my request for an estimate and, after inspecting my old roof, came back with an estimate of $5,800. The estimate included a power attic fan with a thermostat that John suggested be set to go on when humidity reached 50%, or temperature 100-110 degrees, and also an upgrade to 30 lb. felt which both together added just $250. The $5800 included the fan and felt upgrade. It took John and his crew a full day, plus an hour or two of the next day, to complete the work. The job was done during daylight savings time, so the shortened daylight hours prevented it being done in a day. If the job had been done in the summer, I am sure the work could be completed in one day. John is personable, knowledgeable, and professional. The work was done for the agreed-upon price. If a neighbor asked me for a recommendation for a roofer, I would not hesitate to recommend John M. Shinn Roofing, LLC.
Description of Work: All old roofing removed to the existing wood deck. Any bad wood removed and replaced with the corresponding thickness roof sheathing (up to 1 sheet of plywood will be replaced for free). Install new drip edge (brown) around entire perimeter of all sections of roof. Install 6 feet of ice and water shield along the bottoms of all shingled sections of the roof. Install new felt paper over all shingled sections of the roof (30 lb). Install a new fiberglass base sheet over front low pitch section of roof using 2.5 inch cap nails. Install a new GAF APP roofing system over the front low pitched section of roof. Install a new GAF/Elk Timberline HD architectural shingle system over the remainder of the roof (color is customer’s choice) using 1.25 inch galvanized roofing nails (5 to 6 nails per shingle for max. wind protection). Install new chimney flashing and counter flashing (brown). All exhaust pipes will receive new pipe collars. Install a new power attic fan on the upper main roof. Roof top install and flashing only, we do not wire the fan. All debris removed upon completion of job, which includes running of magnet around house and yard to pick up loose nails.

I was very pleased with both my interaction with everyone I spoke with from the company as well as the work done - from my initial conversation with John's wife thru the repair work that was completed. I received a call back from John the early evening of the day I initially called. John went thru the details of the problem and gave me a rough estimate. The actual work was completed the very next day. John showed up in the morning with one of his workers (Luis), looked at the roof, gave me the price and Luis completed the job. While I didn't do any comparative shopping around for price, I thought the cost was fair (hence my "B" rather than assuming an "A" for Price in the ratings). Luis was great and took time out (despite the cold - think with wind chill it was in the single digits) to explain details about the problem and the repair he made. Overall the repair looks great - I can't even tell where he patched in the shingles. I will definitely use John Shinn Roofing for any future repairs or work I have done on the roof.

Fast quote, very responsive. Quote was equal price to another contractor but John had more work in his quote. The house is over 100 years old and the roof was in better shape than John thought so it actually cost less than the quote. Came as scheduled and John was on site the entire time. Very fast installation and no more leaks! Overall good experience and would highly recommend

John Shinn (owner) and his crew did an excellent job. Started at 800 AM and completed large job (with cleanup) by 500 PM. John was on site all day and is a working owner which assures invovlement in project. John is a knowledgeable craftsman with extensive experience and answers for all roofing problems. I would recommend him for any roofing job. His pricing was the most reasonable and he delivered all goods and services as promised in his written proposal.

House was bought as a short sale. John gave us an estimate in September 2013 and held the price until short sale was finalized in April 2014. Within a week after closing, John and his crew were on the job, which only took one day. They also did a great job of cleaning up after they were done. John was a pleasure to deal with as he is courteous and professional. I would highly recommend him.

After a bit of delay due to rain, John and his crew arrived as scheduled on the 7th of August. Most of the roof tiling was completed the first day. During the coarse of that first day, John discovered several areas adjoining the roof where the wood siding had rotted out due to water penetration and neglect of previous owners. He gave me an acceptable estimate right away to replace and paint the affected areas. This took another day and a half to complete. The end result is a beautiful new roof that enhances the overall look of the house and some well done repairs to areas of siding. Finally, John is efficient and skilled, paying a lot of attention to detail. He also pays a lot of attention to the work of his crew as any Sargent Major might do. He realizes that his reputation is reflected in his and his crew's work product. He communicated very well with us about what he was doing and why. Over all, it was an excellent experience and I feel confident recommending him to anyone else.

John and his crew did a very good job. The project doubled in scope as i own a log home and once the old roof was removed the support structure was not acceptable for the new roof. John explained all our options and worked with us to get the job done right! We were very pleased with the workmanship and knowledge of the crew. They did a great job cleaning up when the job was complete and made sure we were pleased with the job. We would strongly recommend John to all our friends and neighbors.

I would highly recommend John Shinn roofing for your next project. When I initially called, I left a message on his voice mail. John was on vacation and was still able to get back to me within 45 minutes. His pricing is more then fair and the work he does is of high quality. The job was completed within a day. Another contractor quoted my project at a considerably higher price and thought it would take four days to complete. The job site was completely clean when John was finished with the work and I didn't find any stray nails or debris on my property after John left.

The project went exactly as John stated it would. John and his crew are professional, courteous and are really polished at their craft of roofing. They do not "race" they have a great pulse and get things done in a smooth and consistent manor. It was great to watch and I enjoyed having his team at our property. The project we had consisted of installing 4 new ceiling joists that had rotted from an old leaking sky light and also re-deck the entire roof. (all new plywood) The re-deck was to deal with an issue from an improperly ventilated roof system that caused some mold. We also had to re-frame for the new skylight and and installed some cool new roof ventilation fans. . . Prior to the project start date, John and I had discussed different options and he walked me through the best solution to deal with my vaulted ceiling and attic space so that we could address any moisture issues going forward. We now have roof mounted fans (tucked on the back side of house) to draw air and ensure that the attic area and vaulted ceiling get significant air flow and moisture is sucked out. The roof mounted fans are on a humidistat and thermostat ensuring that if the humidity gets to high the fan draws air out. Pretty cool . . . John, provided the most knowledge and insight during the quote and initial review of the house. I had different contractors swing by to provide a quote. John won the deal hands down based on his knowledge and professionalism. He uses great roofing material, does not skimp on any of the details and ensures the job gets down right. John took the time to explain how roofs need to breath and what needed to be done to fix our issues. I'm a handy guy and like to ensure I hire people that are good at what they do. John, knows roofs . . . . and is not afraid to talk about it. He can explain roofs to the cows come home. . . I love it, I learned a lot and appreciated his insight. On roofing day everything arrived and went as John stated. John is on the roof doing the work with his crew. Things are getting done right and are being managed properly. Following the roofing and clean-up, John personally did a detailed inspection to ensure we had a great looking property. Re-roofing a house is messy . . . A lot of stuff comes off the house. John ensured the property looked better then it did when he arrived. We have received many compliments from neighbors walking by on the quality and esthetics of the new roof. Every-time I pull into the drive, I'm excited about how nice the home looks. . .. THANK YOU
Description of Work: My wife and I have a home built from 1985. John and his crew did a complete re-deck of all plywood and installed brand new GAF HD "pewter Gray" shingles. Some of the work involved included new ceiling joists, new attic ventilation fans. The project was necessary to deal with some leaking and moisture issues which caused some mold and roofing problems.

Requested John to give me a quote on replacing our roof or just making several repairs due to a mold problem. John contacted me the very next day and scheduled an appt for the following day at 9am on a Sat. John didnt arrive as I called him at 11am. He apologized stating he lost my number, which was odd because he just called the day before with his phone. Again he did apologize and still came out that day to give me an estimate. Moving forward, John recommended we replace the entire roof and address the mold concerned, which I agreed with when we compared the cost. Contract was developed and the job was completed in 2 days. The weather was a huge factor not allowing them to get there when first thought and updates were given by John and his wife throughout the process. I did feel that we could have been updated a little more as it was a few weeks before he could get to the job, again because of the weather only. The job was done in 2 days as stated and the roof looks GREAT. John recommended a darker shingle than what we were first considering and glad he did because it looks sharp. I was somewhat disappointed by the clean-up as after the first day work, we came home to find our upstairs hallway to be dirty with small pieces of wood and shingles. After the job was completed, I then found 5-7 nails in our driveway and around our yard. I called John and he did apologize for the nails as he stated they must have fell out of his workers pouch. The upstairs hallway he did apologize but was "unsure" how it happened and stated I had every right to be upset. John did stop by the house and completed another outside clean-up a few days later with the magnet and also offered to pay for any flat tires should it happen. Overall John was knowledgeable and thought his price was fair. The only disappointment was the cleanup as stated before.

Thanks for the review.. Few comments on the cleanup- the "small pieces" of shingles and wood in hallway were from my best understanding basically a heavy "dust". We replaced all the wood on 1/2 the roof (due to mold), that does generate dust (shingle granules, saw dust) in the attic. That dust/debris must have made it into the hallway as I went down the attic stairway to get down through the house. Customer described the nails he found, brand new long nails. Yes, I told customer I would pay for Any flat tires, as I would without question. Yes, I came back myself and ran the magnet around the entire house again, I found a few more nails (3 or 4). The truth is (not counting the new long nails that fell out someone's pouch) you will always find a few nails left behind eventually, somewhere in the yard, behind a bush, under steps, etc. I am always the last person to walk around and "final clean", and we clean up after ourselves well.

Description of Work: Owner came out to the house and provided me with a quote to do the repair, which was a good quote. He also came back to me with the fact that I could get a few more years out of the roof due to the condition. He went up on the roof and checked the seals and overall condition. I don't know many people that would take the time to explain that my roof was good enough and didn't need to be replaced for a little while! He was professional, punctual, and took the time to explain the overall condition of the roof, as well as provide a quote. John came in under the price of other roofers and provided more/better services and materials. John was a top-notch professional from start to finish. He kept me updated on our start date and whether or not it would be affected by the weather. John did everything he said he was going to do. My only concern was that some cement got pock-marked by material being thrown from the roof to the ground. I brought this to John's attention and have complete confidence that he will address this in future jobs. I tell you, John's entire focus is customer satisfaction. It was very refreshing to encounter a positive attitude like John's!

Thanks for the review for review.. Not too sure I agree with the pock marks in the cement though. As I told customer when we spoke about it, the area she described with these marks was about 30 feet away from where the debris was thrown off the roof into the dumpster. We couldn't have thrown the debris that far if we tried.. It just doesn't make any logical sense that it could have been caused by us. The "damaged" area was just too far from the roof.. Have we ever damaged any property? Yes, and when or if it happens I fix or replace without hesitation. If we break it we buy it, or fix it, no questions asked. Any roofer that tells you different is either lying, or hasn't done many roofs. Example, in the past 2 years we have twice damaged a customers property (both Angie's list members). The first incident was a cover for a whirlpool, one shingle hit it and went right through it like a knife, the other was a PVC exhaust pipe for a radon removal system. Both incidents were rectified the day the damage occurred. The cost of new cover for hot tub ($600) was taken off job cost. We replaced the PVC pipe for radon the day it happened.. Again, no questions asked. If we break we buy or fix.. Of course we try hard not too allow that to happen, but with amount of debris coming off roof, even with the greatest of care taken, it's inevitable that small accidents will happen.

Showed up on time for the estimate, seemed professional - gave me a ballpark figure and followed up with a more accurate on point estimate. I originally wanted a skylight that I had purchased prior and he explained that because I had trusses instead of rafters that it could not be installed. He suggested that I purchase a skylight made for trusses and that he would install the light and any finish work we would have to complete. My husband decided that a sun tunnel type of skylight would be easier to finish and that is what we chose to have put in. We picked out a shingle color (went with a 30 yr ) and a Velux Sun Tunnel low profile flat glass and John ordered both and called to schedule the job when materials came in. He scheduled the job for Tuesday April 8, 2014 and confirmed with a phone call the night before. Monday it had rained and was supposed to clear out by Tuesday morning. He showed up on time with his crew, but it was still drizzling when they arrived. He waited and after a time decided to reschedule the following day - which he did. The job was completed that day. After John and the crew left, my husband went through the yard with our magnet and found some staples and nails that they had missed. Overall I thought the experience was very good and would recommend to others looking to get a roof done.
Description of Work: All old roofing to be removed to the existing wood deck from the main house roof. Any bad wood will be replaced with the corresponding thickness of new roof sheathing (up to 3 sheets at no additional cost). Removeall existing screws from gutter guards (except were seems overlap), re-fasten all gutter guards using 1.5 inch roofing nails along the top 2 to 3 inches of flange. Install new drip edge (white wide faced) along all side eve edges. Install 6 feet of ice and water shield along the bottom of both sides of roof. Install new felt paper over the remainder of roof deck (30 lb). Install new GAF starter strips along all side eve edges. Install a new Timberline HD architectural shingle system over entire roof (color is customer’s choice) using 1.25 inch galvanized roofing nails (5 to 6 nails per shingle the steeper main section for max. wind protection). All exhaust pipes will receive new pipe collars. Install a new rolled ridge vent along the length of the roof ridge, install corresponding GAF shingle caps using 2.5 inch hand nails. All debris will be removed upon completion of job, which includes running of magnet around house and yard to pick up loose nails. Install Velux sun tunnel tubular skylight and low profile flashing. Thanks for the review.. One quick comment- there are literally tens of thousands of small peices of debris that come off the roof when it's replaced. We always try to get them all, but in reality it's impossible to get every speck of debris. I'm always the last person to walk around and check the ground, one last final clean. But again, it's just unrealistic to expect that your roofer will not miss something. I clean the premises like it's my own, and after I did my own roof I knew some small amounts of very small debris would be missed...

We needed our old roof shingles to be replaced and found John Shinn on Angie's List with an excellent rating for roofing work. We have been working with John for two years on this project. We have a large roof and his price was fair. When we initially met him about this job, he did not pressure us to replace our roof at that time. He actually advised us that our roof still had some life in it. It was his integrity that let us know he was the right person with whom to do business. Throughout the planning process, he was thorough and answered all of our questions and concerns. We knew exactly what to anticipate with regard to how the roof shingles would be replaced. When we finally committed to the the project he kept us informed of his timeframe and reinforced the process by which they would do the work. This took a little over two days. The crew arrived every day when they said they would and John was not only on site with the crew, he was up on the roof directing & quality checking the work, as well as performing it personally. They kept our property clean throughout the process. The entire crew was hard working and courteous. We would recommend John Shinn to anyone in need of any roofing work or advice. He is responsible, professional and reliable. It was an excellent experience for us.

After I found J.M Shinn Roofing on Angie's List, I called and left a voice mail. He called me back within 30 min of the call and went out to do the estimate the very next day. After the estimate, he walked me through everything to make sure I understood what products he was using and why. He returned all my calls within a very reasonable time and never made me feel pressured as if i had to go with him. We had three other quotes, but decided to go with him. He and his guys were very punctual and very neat with their work. They took all the trash with them which was great. They did a great job with the support wall as well. I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: John Shinn put a new roof on my house, repaired the roof on my garage, and built a support wall for the garage(fixing bad work from previous owner).

John and his crew were on site and ready to work on time. They were all courteous, professional and effective in the work that they performed. Let me start with my first interaction with Shin Roofing. John's wife Chris (always a pleasure) returned my call and set up an appointment for an estimate. Once completed, I was provided TWO estimates, one with and one without new plywood. The option was based on the condition of the planks under the slate and gaps between the planks, I chose to have the plywood installed. John removed the chimney at no additional cost. The determination that the roof fan was needed shortly after the slates were removed. Since it was not included in the original quote, John just installed it, no additional cost. I had not expected this, nor do I think anyone else should. The work was completed it 1 1/2 days, with the removal of the slate, re-sheeting and the shingling of the main house completed in the first day. Due to the loss of light, the small addition needed to be completed the morning of the second day. John was clear on the expectation before the work began. Thanksgiving and some rather questionable weather days were the only delays in starting the work. Throughout the two days John was on site and if there was any changes (such as the roof fan), he immediately brought them to our attention. John was clear on the expectations, the needs and end results of the work that we was doing. At the end of the work, John and his crew left our yard and deck in better condition that when they arrived. ALL of the trash was cleaned up. There were no empty food or drink containers, no butts, nothing was left behind. The bonus was that the leaves and twigs from our trees went along for the ride, thanks guys! Would I use Shinn roofing again? In a heartbeat. Professional, on time, set and delivered expectations. Oh yes ONE last thing that John was very clear on...He physically installed the roof fan, but does NOT do electrical work. That's on us, again he was quite clear and provided a recommendation for the electrical work I am not bashing, John does roofs that's all that he does professionally and does roofing amazingly well. I mean, come on, its called Shinn Roofing, not Shinn of All Trades.
Description of Work: Removed and replaced 85 year old slate roof with architectural shingles, removed old chimney and installed roof fan
