Description of Work: Kitchen remodeling: Everything removed from old kitchen including cabinets, floor, sink, bulkhead. Was very satisfied with service, responsiveness, kitchen deign, and all employees and subcontractors hired by Clark. They do carry a wonderful line of Amish-made kitchen cabinets (Schrock's of Walnut Creek), which still look great even after 6 years. We did tell Clark that we were willing to wait our turn for the job, but when it was our turn, we wanted their complete attention, which we got. The only wait we had (and we were informed by Clark ahead of time) was for the kitchen countertop. Employees were very trustworthy -- we left for work and they did have access to the house with no problem. We would hire Clark again, and in fact, we have recently contacted them for a deck. More recently we had 2 chipped ceramic tiles in the kitchen (our fault) and we contacted Clark about repair. Clark sent their ceramic tile man to replace them that week at our expense, but we were okay with that since it wasn't a defect in the tile or original workmanship. Clark is A#1.

The price they quoted me was $47000. They were very thorough and the quote itself was very well written and very comprehensive. They were good for the quality of work from what I saw, but they were way over priced for my budget.
Description of Work: Clark Renovations Inc. DBA Clark Construction Co. came in November last year and gave me an estimate for a basement and laundry room remodel, which included electrical work, plumbing and flooring.

They pay close attention to detail. They were very coscientious about the work in the house. Everything was very clean when we came home. We had very good service when selecting items in the showroom. They were very helpful when we were having to make choices about what things we wanted.

The job was excellent and was very satisfied with the result. This is an established family-run local business that's been operating for many years. Chris, our consultant on the job, was very low key, listened to our concerns, and made appropriate recommendations. Their pricing was fair and comparable to other estimates. The workers were all professional, showed up when expected, and cleaned up daily.

Asked for a bid for complete kitchen remodel and additional work in September and received bid. At the time I made it clear I was soliciting bids from several contractors and declined a complete design until job had been awarded. The bid I received was substantially higher than I expected and didn't include all work I had requested. Because I was told work would be ongoing during the holidays we decided to wait until 2010. In the interim we completed some of the work and decided to reduce the scope of the kitchen project. In the spring I e-mailed Clark to ask for a revised bid to reflect the project as it had changed, and received no response. I had told him that I had a "Home Depot" kitchen plan I wanted to use preliminarily for bid so I could compare bids "apples to apples." (He had offered earlier to provide a plan and I had declined because I didn't want him to put that much work into the job until I hired him.) I received no response to my e-mail. I finally called and the secretary told me that they were aware of my e-mail but "that's not how we do it." I clarified my intention, that if I hired Clark I would use their plan and their cabinets, I was just trying to use the same plan for all bidders, preliminarily. She told me that they give a plan and a bid and it's "take it or leave it." Apparently they weren't interested in renovating to my specifications, and she said they aren't interested in giving me a bid if other contractors were also bidding to do the job. ("We aren't going to get into a bidding war.") I was surprised to hear that! Who would hire the first contractor they talked to without talking to other contractors about a major renovation? I think this, and their failure to communicate this to me initially or to answer my e-mail, is unprofessional and would not hire them.

Response from Clark Renovations Inc
Your member deemed our Sept.09 proposal as too high. It included a complete kitchen with quartz tops, flooring, back splash, windows, doors, powder room, bulkhead, archways and door ways modified, recessed and under cabinet lighting, plastering, etc. How can you put any value on a quote without looking at the design? We produce our design 1st and price 2nd. We take great pride in our designs and the quality of the products we use. They are not available at Home Depot. The relationships we have with our Amish cabinet company and others enables us to price competitively. We bid against our competitors frequently - we do not put the big box stores in the same category as professional kitchen and bath designers. The customer had a bathroom done by another company that she was disappointed in. Evidently she didn't learn from that experience. Perhaps the member should have requested designs first from the numerous people she contacted and selected the one she liked before asking all the professional people to bid a Home Depot design. We have our own carpenters - you have no clue who your installer will be with a big box store. They are unable to get the products we use, so how can this member compare apples to apples? And, we won't use their products. Home Depot does not cut archways, refinish floors or do the custom carpentry work that was requested. It is absolutely insane to hire a contractor before a design as she states above. Any kitchen proposal without the accompanying design doesn't mean much. Oct. 8 2009 she sent an email saying she would put off the kitchen and main construction until after the holidays; but, she would like to sign for the Andersen Art Glass windows. We mailed her a proposal on Oct. 16, 2009 which she did not respond to. We've been in this business 40 years. Part of being in business is learning to say "no" to unusual and strange requests (bidding something we absolutely won't produce). We wish her good luck with her project.

They were professional and prompt. They were neat and put down a walkway of plastic. They did a good job and finished the work quickly. They had to carry large pieces of glass and frames, so they dinged the wall and one part of the ceiling. They acknowledged and accepted their mistake. They made some attempts to fix it, but could not do it. My overall experience with them was good.
Description of Work: They replaced half the windows around my house.

All this work was done in about 8 weeks. It's all beautiful, roomier, and more functional. Although it seemed more expensive than using a smaller company of one or two contractors working for themselves, and we were required to get the tile and plumbing fixtures through Clark, the products and work were top-notch. It was a pleasure to come home every day and see their progress. We're confident that the work was done really well, and will last for years. Chris Clark and the work crew were professional, punctual, polite, forthcoming in discussing all issues, options, and requirements; all work was carefully detailed on paper.
Description of Work: Remodeled 2 bathrooms. In one tore out and rebuilt a small custom tile shower, repaired and replaced framing in floor and walls, installed new walls, ceiling, fan, electrical, lighting, sink/cabinet, and accessory fixtures. Added insulation. Installed an existing toilet and mirror from other rooms. Fixed closure of the door/door frame, and installed new threshold. In other, bumped out one wall into adjacent closet to enlarge the bathroom, removed old tile floor and all fixtures, installed new walls/ceiling, tub, toilet, wall cabinet, double sink/counters/cabinet, mirror/medicine cabinets, electrical, accessories, lighting, fan, tub wall tiles, floor tiles, and under-floor electrical heating w/programmable thermostat. Also repaired door/door frame, replaced latch. We bought our own accessories and lighting fixtures, which saved us hundreds over ordering from Clark. We also did all the wall/window/door/trim stripping/priming/painting in both baths, saving hundreds.

We provide the plumbing fixtures for a reason. We are a registered Kohler showroom - we get addl. discounts for Kohler products because of that and discount to the homeowner. What happens when the homeowner provides the fixtures and we're paying the plumber $60 an hour to install - he opens the box and find parts missing. We have to call the customer at work to return the original and repurchase. Time costs money. We provide and are responsible if there are any problems.
