It went as John said it would. It took a week. They were very neat. We are looking forward to winter this year! John specializes in chimneys, I felt confident I was getting the safest option for our family. He and Brandon's are a pleasure to work with.

The work went very well. Mr. Schofield and his worker dropped a new liner in our chimney, sealed the interior smoke chamber, and performed other masonry repairs to the interior and exterior of the chimney. They took excellent care of the interior of our home, keeping everything tidy and clean, even with all the soot, dust, and masonry work going on. Mr. Schofield's manner and professionalism were absolutely top-notch, and I would recommend him to anyone... and in fact, I already have, to my father-in-law, who needs some fireplace work done at his house.
Description of Work: We had problems with smoke escaping from our chimney into the house. Mr. Schofield inspected the fireplace and chimney stack and found several cracks and leaks, which would need to be repaired for us to begin using our fireplace again. It was a big job, which I knew it would be, and we probably could have gotten it done for less, but not with the same level of confidence I had in Mr. Schofield.

It went brilliantly! John was professional, helpful and friendly throughout - we initially called him out to take a look at our chimney/flue to make sure it was drafting correctly and we ended up contracting him to fix the identified problems and install a wood-burning stove. John worked hard to explain the various options to us regarding the work and the wood stove in particular and helped us to reach decisions where necessary. John (and Brandon) completed the work quickly, cleanly and as quietly/respectfully as was possible. The house was completely clean afterwards - no mess! The quality of the work was excellent and we're extremely happy with the results. We will definitely be hiring John and Sootseekers again when we need any fire/chimney work. Thank you :)

As always, Mr. Schoefield was professional. He actually arrived ahead of schedule, but called to state this ahead of time. I had some concerns with the fan of the wood burner, and he made it a fact to completely clean it. I had a question to what I thought was a bird that may have gotten into my furnace flue, and he without hesitation looked into it and removed a dead bird. I have dealt with John and his company "Soot Seekers" for years, and he has never let me down! I don't look anywhere else for this service!

On time, pleasant man, quite knowledgeable. Used him in the past. Used a vacuum system so absolutely no mess. Took maybe an hour or so. Will continue to use him. Really can't remember cost, but it seemed reasonable. (AL required that I put in a figure) It took many weeks to arrange appointment. I was surprised that he'd be that busy in the summer. It didn't really matter since I just wanted it ready for the upcoming winter. Overall, completely satisfied.

John and an assistant performed the interior work on time. They sealed the the fireboxes in each of the three decorative fireplaces and did an inspection of my two chimneys. John said that they would have to return in the spring to install the chimney caps as they would have to be custom made due to the shape of the chimney. It is a 100 year old house, so that did not surprise me. However, my calls to schedule the second part of the work have gone unanswered. I have left multiple messages and none have been returned. John does good work, but I have very little tolerance for contractors who cannot return a phone call after repeated contact attempts. It is especially aggravating since he already should have had the parts made by the spring and should be expecting payment. If you can get a phone call returned and an actual service date, they may be worth a call. I will find another provider.

Went very well. I called and left a message and John called back within a reasonable time frame. We set an appointment time and he arrived as scheduled. He did the inspections and cleanings without incident. On inspection of the chimney tops he found that the masonry was deteriorating. He recommended some repairs that needed to be done. They were repairs that he does not do, but he recommended a masonry repair business. (It just so happened that the masonry repair company is highly rated on Angie's list). John is very businesslike and straightforward. I used Soot Seekers 18 years ago to rehab the fireplaces and install the gas logs. I was very happy with John's work then too. Wonderful to see consistent good business practice.
Description of Work: Inspected chimney, chimney liners, and chimney top dampers. Inspected fire boxes and rearranged artificial logs in fireplace. This was for two gas log fireplaces.

Response from SOOT SEEKERS CHIMNEY SERVICE INC
Our company policy for the past 23+ years is when we are speaking to a potential customer on the phone, we either schedule an appointment with them, giving them a 1-hour window of when we will arrive, or if we are not able to accommodate them due to scheduling considerations, we inform them of that. We have even offered another CSIA Certified chimney sweep in the vicinity that may be able to help them sooner, or to meet their immediate needs. There appears to be some mis-communication or potential this client contacted another company other than Soot Seekers Chimney Service. We were scheduling new appointments for approx. 4weeks-5weeks from this date(which does not fit his statement of 2 weeks), we don't hang up on potential customers, and we don't speak to a potential customer and then say we'll call back, unless there is additional information than needs to be gathered or they requested to speak to the technician directly. If there had been a concern regarding the non-scheduling of an appointment during the initial call, or lack of a call back within a day, a phone call to clear up any concerns would have seemed appropriate. I trust this is a misunderstanding and is in no-way a reflection of how we operate. Regards, John Schofield

I have had John do work on our fireplace 3 times over the last 10 years. The second tome was when i had just moved into my new house. I had John come to inpect and clean the chimney/fireplace. There were several fire bricks loose in the box which he reset. He then repointed the entire box, as needed. Since then, he has been out 2 times to inspect and clean. John is very professional and polite. He is very conscious of keeping the house clean when he brings his equipment in. He changes his shoes so as not to bring wet snow/salt/mud in from the outside. When john arrived this most recent time, I was not at home, but my wife told me that he talked and interacted with our very curious 3 year old. She told me that he was very cute with our daughter who was hounding john with rapid-fire questions. I thought this was very nice of him to humor her and give her the time and attention. By the time I arrived, john was just getting all of his equipment set up. He had already spread the drop cloths so as to keep any dust from settling on our rug/floor/furniture. I realized that this was just a precaution, though, as his vacuums are very strong and there is very little if any dust AT ALL. It didn't take very long for him to complete the job, and when he was done he explained everything that he had done. I started asking John about a gas fireplace that I was going to install in the fireplace. I was surprised to learn that John not only installs and services gas fireplaces, but that he sells them. Had I known this, I would have purchased from him and had him install. I trust John's honesty implicitly. Not only in the work that he does, but in general. After the first time he was at my house, and after I had gotten to know him, when he had to come the second time, I explained that I would be gone all day at work, but that I would leave the door open for him. This is how much I trust him. There are not too many people I would trust in my house all day with me gone. I recommend John to anyone. Thank you, John, for all that you have done for me and for my family!

1924 house, old unlined chimney and open fireplace - lost more heat in winter than provided by fire. Flu was rusted away and wind would whistle through doors I put on in 70's. Finally decided to shop for an insert, called four outfits, responses from three, price for insert was cheaper at one - but when their guy got here and measured, he realized they could not do the chimney liner in our older one - gave me Soot Seekers number. John climbed up, over and I think maybe through! Gave me the straight skinny on what would work and what size would be best for a good fire and info and prices on a New Buck Stove. Pricier, but I just plain liked the guy. The best money I've spent in a long time! Installed right before Christmas, lined room with drop cloths on floor and over fireplace, cleaned out chimney, worked in the liner and insulation around it, cleaned up and went over instructions for first couple fires. Fours times the heat for half the wood. I'm not usually impressed - John impressed me and would and did recommend him to family and friends.

Man, I don't know where to start. I called about 6 different places during the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. In Pittsburgh we had heavy rains and winds from it. Anywa, they were honest and said we can't get to you until January. I said, ok please put me on the list. As the date in January approached, I was still calling other places mind you, they called and affirmed the appointment and the time. Wow! They came out did the inspection and the repairs while they were still on the roof, since in their repair world it was minor; my world not a lot of money. :-) I wasn't present during any of this. Once he finished, he called and gave me an estimate over the phone and also told me what he found. After weeks passed, I still had not received a bill. I figured they were still pretty swamped so I waited. Finally, they called me back apologized for the delay and sent a bill along with a seperate detailed letter for my insurance company. Man, how great is that! What really impressed me is how they resolved the issue the same day, because it was minor I'm sure, but never hounded me for payment. I'm the one that kept calling me. This showed me they have integrity and honor in doing their job and helping the home owner maintain their home. I've been elated with joy ever since. I wish they did other services so I could call them for everything. I just can't thank them enough or say enough about them.
Description of Work: The provider inspected my roof that was leaking into the dining room and the living room. They determined the joint between the main roof and the pushed out wall of the dining room needed to be sealed and the chmney flashing fixed.

Had him come out to give me quote to clean 3 chimneys--spent a lot of time with me explaining way wood burners and boiler fireplaces are set up and maintenance ideas. Said he was going to send me narrative and never did. He was about $20 more/fireplace than other quotes to clean. Very responsive and professional, but never heard back and went with other company. Feel like I was charged $69 for nothing. Waste of my time since I never heard back.

John is everything you want in a contractor. Courteous, intelligent, careful, knowledgeable. He uses good materials, he explains everything without pandering. He's also very expensive, I had other bids at ~30% less than what I paid. But in this case I wanted quality, so I paid for it. Highly recommended.

John spent a long time examining our chimney and then more time with us explaining the problems we had and what we needed to have done to have a safe chimney and fireplace which were up to code. John is a very experienced and professional guy. He is licensed and does annual training where he learns and helps other to learn his craft. In this role he and others provide community service for non-profit organizations. Coordination with Rand R Masonry was excellent. When the chimney rebuild was complete, John proceeded to install the stainless steel liners in the chimney flues, then installed the Ahren Fireplace system. The nice looking chimney cap was installed with the damper connected. The scaffolding came down when John was done. John was very careful to protect our floors and furnishings. He cleaned up every day before he left. He spent time after the job was complete explaining how we should build small fires at first to allow the fireplace lining to cure. The fireplace is attractive, functional, and we know that it is safe. John answered all of our questions. A great experience, very smooth.
Description of Work: Evaluation of our chimney and fireplace. Discussion of what needed to be done to bring us up to code and to have a safe fireplace for burning logs. After R&R Morter erected scaffolding and rebuild our brick chimney, Soot Seekers installed stainelss steel liners in each chimney flue, one for a water heater and a much more substantial one for our fireplace. A cap was insalled at the top of the chimney, with built in flue damper operable from inside the Ahren fireplace (see below). Then the old fireplace damper was removed and the entire chamber was relined with an Ahren Fireplace with cast refractory material which brought our fireplace up to code and much safer. Finally a new folding door and spark screen system were installed.

Rand R Masonry Restorations recommended I get Soot Seekers to examine the chimney before they did external repair to correct a problem with water leaking into my fireplace. According to Soot Seekers t;he problem is with the cracked bricks on the outside of the chimney and cracks on the cap/crown which Rand R is going to repair in a week or so. Both John and his helper were extremely polite and careful using dropcloths and wearing booties every time they entered the house. You could tell you were getting the truth about the situation. I would not hesitated one minute to call them back for any chimney fireplace cleaning or work.
Description of Work: F;ull inspection of fireplace chimney from roof to base. Vacuumed out and brushed flue liner. Asseessed need for repairs to flue liner for use with a gas insert instead of buring wood. Advised that repairs were not necessary unless I would be burning wood. John Sc;hofield used a flexible camera to examine the chimney internally.

I called Soot Seekers on several occasions, at least 3 or 4 times and either got a busy signal or voice mail. It seems like there is never anyone there to actually answer calls. I left detailed messages each time I called and it would take them several days to call me back. (They did call me back and unfortunately they were unable to catch me at certain times as well which is not their fault obviously) When I was finally able to speak to John he was very professional and was able to give me a quote on chimney sweeps for two of my chimneys, however he was going to charge 60 some dollars to come out to give an estimate on some of the repairs on the chimneys I needed as well as to take a look at the dampers. I was able to get a free estimate from another company, who I also found on Angie's list and their chimney sweep prices were a little more affordable so I just went ahead with the other company. I'm sure Soot Seekers does a fine job, but the lack of prompt responses kind of turned me off.
