This was probably one of the best contractor experiences we've ever had. Every aspect of the experience was smooth and the professionalism of everyone we dealt with was exceptional. There was one heart-stopping moment when Bill said, "we have a problem." Turns out that a part wasn't loaded on the truck and they would have to wait about an hour for it to be delivered. The footer beneath the porch had collapsed; Bill said it's the first time he has ever seen that. (Thank you cheapskate former owner!) The crew finished the job in one day and the estimate was two to three days. This was yet another terrific and wonderful facet of this experience. Those gentlemen worked really hard all day - I lurked around watching off and on all day. They cleaned up everything and there is barely a trace that they were here other than the fresh dirt atop the excavated areas. With any kind of luck we will never need their services again, but if we do, we won't bother getting other bids. It means a lot to be comfortable with a contractor who is professional in every way and to be completely satisfied with the experience. PERSONAL BONUS POINTS AWARDED TO THEM FOR HIRING VETERANS AND RESERVISTS!
Description of Work: Our three season porch on the rear of the house and our fireplace chimney on another side of the house were detaching from the house (thanks to the previous owner's incredibly cheap and shoddy work.) Matthew's Wall Anchor Service was recommended to us by a contractor we had consulted last summer (and we checked them out on Angie's List...) The estimator Damien arrived exactly on schedule, did not feed me any sales schtick or apply any pressure whatsoever (GREATLY, TRULY APPRECIATED) and had a written estimate, compete with diagrams, prepared in what seemed like no time. Their estimate was not the lowest or highest but based on word-of-mouth, Angie's List and the total professionalism of Damien we couldn't go with anyone else. We called them the next day and notified them that we would accept their estimate. Bonnie and Rhonda scheduled and confirmed dates and times and were always pleasant and professional on the phone. Bill and his crew arrived precisely as scheduled and were polite, friendly and patient with this relatively clueless homeowner's questions. They went right to work and did two separate excavations prior to installing five piers; two for the fireplace chimney wall and three for the porch. Afterwards they disposed of the shrubbery that had to be removed and re-filled the excavations.

The estimate and proposal process went well.
Description of Work: This was one of five companies from which we received estimates on foundation repair work for a slightly bowed foundation wall. Note that the lowest price was one half of the highest price. This company's price was in the middle. While we did not decide in favor of Matthews, it was a difficult decision. All of the companies were very responsive and mostly professional. Each of them had a different opinion on the work that needed to be done. The factors that we considered in making our decision were the warranties (they varied considerably), price, recommendations, Angie's List rating, BBB rating, and references.

Not too often can you say that a company is truly amazing. Matthews is truly amazing. They ran into a variety of problems with my foundation and the process, but wanted to ensure the job would be satisfactorily completed and went above and beyond to fix my foundation problem. It is very rare these days that a company does what they say they will do and work towards the customer's total satisfaction. They worked with me, explained everything they were doing, what was going well and what was not and offered suggestions on how to correct the problem. I was absolutely amazed at the level of dedication, professionalism, and hard work that every single member of the company provided. Sometimes things can be challenging and often to no fault of anyone, but these guys made it right. I cannot say enough good things about this company. They are the best. If you have ANY foundation issues, you would be crazy not to contact Matthews. They are absolutely top notch in every possible way! Hats off to you and everyone at your company!
Description of Work: The corner of my foundation sank and broke away from the house and was significantly leaning outward. Matthews installed a five pier support system and with the use of wall anchors, pulled my wall back to almost its original position.

He gave me a good look at the stuff and put me at ease. There was no charge. There were a couple of cracks in the wall in the basement. It is a full basement, but it is not finished. I am not interested in doing that anyway, but there were a couple of cracks. There was a crack in the floor, so I was just a little nervous about it. I have had some bad rains. I have had a little bit of water in there. I wanted to make sure that the structure was sound. He went through the whole basement, went through the walls, and moved some stuff around to get some checks. He said the structure was sound. He said there was nothing there that he could even feel comfortable in suggesting that I do or try to sell me anything. He gave me a couple of suggestions. The cracks are very slight, and he said I can get some Sakrete ready mix concrete and fill it up if I would like to do that. He told me to keep an eye on it, and if it increases by any chance to give him a call.
Description of Work: A professional engineer from Matthews Wall Anchor Service came out in end July/early August of 2011. He did basement waterproofing inspection. He checked a couple of cracks in the basement wall and in the floor. He said the cracks were very slight, so there was nothing that was any problem at all.

Apart from a scheduling mix-up (which was the office's fault and not the workers), we were extremely pleased with the work done. The guys were punctual and courteous and did an great job. We had major foundation issues (cracked and buckled walls) and they got the wall back straight. The wall actually moved back 5 inches from I-beam supports we had installed earlier (in a failed effort to solve problem). They cleaned up everything before they left. I would definitely recommend using Matthews, the difference in the walls is really amazing.

I got several opinions and estimates prior to deciding to do the piering. Once i signed the contract with Matthews the work was scheduled for several months later due to their current workload. This was to be a 2-day project, and i did plan to be off of work those days. The first day of work we did have some bad weather, and i did receive a call from the foreman that they would be several hours late. They were also several hours late the next day, and did leave a little early both days apparently due to some problems with one of their trucks. This caused them to have to come a third day, and they were able to finish the work the third day. They were professional, did clean up well, and did their best to resolve the issues that i had with the foundation. They were able to close up the exterior cracks to some degree, and to raise the corner of the house somewhat. There was some minor damage to the panneling of the basement as they attempted to install the piers, and this was a known risk.
Description of Work: Installed 7 piers to stabilize the foundation of my house. Originally 4 piers were to be installed outside and 3 inside but upon their arrival they decided to put all 7 piers inside. This was due to difficulty accessing the side yard with heavy equipment, since the houses in my neighborhood are fairly close together. The interior piering included breaking up concrete in the basement, installing the piers and patching the concrete.

They did a good job. They came out and were done in like a morning. I thought it would take much longer than that. We had cracks in the garage and they put in wall anchors. There is a big metal plate on the wall and I guess they drill them into the ground. So that?s how wall anchors are. Everything seems to be working fine. It also comes with a lifetime warranty. I didn?t compare their price with anybody else. It took a while to schedule since they were really busy. They took a month to get the work done. They came out within two days to give us the quote. They were very good and the guys who came out were great.

Called the company and quickly got an appointment with a rep. The sales rep was knowledgeable about their product but also called in a very experienced installer to help him decide how to spec the job and to answer my questions. The estimate included a lot of details about their product, and references. We had to wait about a month to get on the work schedule, which was fine since the sales rep warned us about it and we were out of town part of that time anyway. The crew arrived very early in the morning but didn't do anything noisy until a decent hour. Work took about 5 days. For the outside piers, they excavated by hand to expose a 4' section of the foundation. None of our shrubs were harmed. In the basement, they dug in two areas. They jackhammered the cement floor and removed all the debris. They put up plastic sheeting to protect our stuff, but it was still very dusty. They were very conscientious about cleaning up, but they can only do so much. When the foundation was exposed outside, the crew discovered that the bottom didn't have a large enough footer stone to support the external piers as planned. At first they suggested pouring a concrete footer in that area, but then changed the plan to move the pier and use a wall anchor to repair the bulging wall. The senior tech who helped with the estimate came by several times and helped adjust the plan and explained all the changes to me. I don't have a problem with changes if we get to the right solution, and I think he did. After excavating and placing all the piers, they tensioned them all at the same time. They watched the cracks in the brick house to determine how much to lift the foundation. They didn't get all of the cracks to close as they'd hoped, but they improved the situation a lot. Then they re-filled the holes and repaired the basement floor. They had to work a bit late to finish the floor, then they came back the next week (Monday or Tuesday?) to put the basement sink and washer & dryer back in place. (They moved and replaced our cement sink, washer, and gas dryer with no problems.) They also patched up a downspout to help keep water out of the basement. Things that would have made me more confident about their work (1) Having a structural engineer on their staff to help explain things to me (2) Being more cautious about the condition of the foundation stone - our engineer said that the stone might be soft and need replacing but the Matthews crew was confident it wouldn't be a problem and I guess it wasn't. Excavating inside doesn't let you see the exterior of the stone where it would be degraded. The company does not do brick repair (like repointing to help close the cracks) or plaster repair or landscaping to help keep water away from the foundation. They did make some recommendations for additional work. It would be helpful if they could recommend vendors for the rest of the repairs. The repairs came with a good warranty.
Description of Work: We had foundation settling (possibly due to water damage/flooding) which caused wall cracks and bowing. After having a structural engineer assess the problem we decided to use Matthews Wall Anchor to reinforce the foundation. They installed several support piers, some inside and some outside the basement. They also used a screw anchor to repair the extremely bowed wall. Pier installation involves digging out the foundation, placing hydraulic piers under the bottom, loading the piers, then replacing the dirt (and repouring the cement floor for piers in the basement).

So far so good. It's funny, I explored all of the methods (other companies use other methods) for this repair and chose this method on gut feeling alone. Those guys worked HARD. It's a tough job to dig those holes especially with the rock that was in my yard......did i mention how hard those guys worked? Only time will tell if the foundation ever moves again, because the cracks were very slight on my 50 year old home. Fingers are crossed! As far as professionalism goes, I was happy with the experience. From the salesman to the workers.

A crew of 4 or 5 appeared on the scheduled date. They informed me that one shrub would be dug up and might not survive being replanted, so I told them to dispose of it. They hand dug below the base of the bay but found problems with water lines on one side and with the way the concrete had been originally poured (tied into concrete porch area) on both sides, so could only install 1 jack on each side instead of 2. This was done and the holes back filled, but not very evenly. (As an avid gardener, this was significant to me. I'd expected really lousy soil would be exposed, but would have appreciated it be spread back more to grade.) The price was reduced accordingly. They re-caulked the brick areas where there had been gaps but at least one was very sloppy.

Very well. The installers showed up promptly and got right to work. They evaluated whether an additional anchor was required in the front corner and determined it was not. They worked quickly and quietly and completed the work in less time than was originally expected. They cleaned up everything. In addition, they gave us some helpful suggestions on things, that we could do to prevent water from continuing to impact the wall. This is the second time we hired Matthews, they installed anchors on the front foundation wall 10 years ago. We live in a wet area with heavy clay soil, so foundation problems like ours are common. Matthews knew just what needed to be done.

The estimate was professionally done and their system was explained throughly by the salesman. I was concerned about damage to a large older tree and to my yard so I asked for the work to be done by hand and to limit the access of any large machinery on my lawn. The work was done over two days and I confirmed these requirements of work by hand with the two person crew. The second day we had some rain and wet snow and I was unable to be present and they took a bobcat and trenching machine onto my property and caused additional damge to my lawn and my deck. The work was done in a timely manner and within the established estimate However I have incurred some additional costs to repair my deck and bring in some top soil and seed to repair some areas of my lawn that were damaged.I would hire the company again but would be cautious of the crew doing the work and be sure to supervise. Their system and ancors are one of the best and priced competively.
Description of Work: I had the back of my home a family room area of aprox 20 by 30' sinking on one end and cracking my dryrock and basement walls. the cracks had become aprox 1/2' in size and were getting larger. They put in 4 wall ancors and raised the area that was sinkin back to its original place. they used a wall ancor that attached to my foundation and was drilled and ancored to the bedrock layer to insure no further settlement. they dug 4 holes aprox 3 ft by 3 ft to install these wall ancors and cut a whole in my deck to gain acces to one of the areas of the wall anchor locations. I have a large old maple tree that is located aprox 6 ' from two of the wall anchor excavations and they needed to cut thru the roots to complete the work.

THE DIRT AND DUST WAS CONTAINED TO THE BASEMENT. AFTER ALL THE WORK WAS COMPLETED, THE MESS WAS TOTALLY CLEANED UP. THEY ARRIVED ON TIME AND STAYED LATE THE SECOND DAY TO FINISH. VERY PROFESSIONAL AND WE HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS.
Description of Work: WATERPROOFING OF THE BASEMENT AND 7 WALL ANCHORS APPLIED TO THE BOWING WALLS OF THE BASEMENT.
I CANNOT SAY ENOUGH POSITIVE THINGS ABOUT THE CREW FROM MATTHEWS. DONNIE, TOM AND JOHN WORKED NON STOP FOR 3 DAYS FROM 7 AM UNTIL 9-10 PM. EVEN AFTER THEIR VEHICLES WERE BROKEN IN TO AND THEIR TOOLS STOLEN, THEY MANAGED TO COMPLETE THE JOB IN 4 DAYS. THEY WERE COURTEOUS, COMPETENT AND SKILLFULL IN THEIR DUTIES AND THEY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND THE NORMAL QUOTED ITEMS FOR THE JOB. THEY TREATED MY HOME AS IF IT WAS THEIRS. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND IF YOU NEED YOUR WALLS STRAIGHTENED, THAT YOU CALL MATTHEWS. THEY WORK IN THE CENTRAL OHIO AREA SO DON'T LET THE ADDRESS SWAY YOU.
Description of Work: MATTHEWS INSTALLED 17 WALL ANCHORS AND STRAIGHTENED UP 3 BADLY BOWED WALLS, WRAPPED THE FOUNDATION WITH DELTA SHEET FOR WATERPROOFING, EXCAVATED THE ENTIRE FOUNDATION, INSTALLED A FRENCH DRAIN AROUND THE OUTSIDE OF THE FOUNDATION, INSTALLED NEW SUMP PUMP AND PIT, INSTALLED NEW DOUNSPOUT DRAINS, AND REPLACED SHATTERED BLOCK, AND SMOOTHED OUT THE DIRT EXCAVATED IN THE PLACE I ASKED THEM TO PUT IT IN. OF ALL THE COMPANIES I CHECK WITH, MATTHEWS WAS THE ONLY ONE THAT WAS WILLING TO EXCAVATE THE DIRT FROM THE OUTSIDE FOR A SET FEE. THIS WAS THE REASON I HIRED THEM AS THEIR FEE WAS WAY BELOW THE COMPETITION FOR EXCAVATION AND I FELT THIS WAS THE RIGHT WAY TO REPAIR THE WALLS. THEY ALSO GIVE A 50 YEAR WARRANTY ON THEIR WORK.
