Nick has been my cement contractor for the past 30 years. I have 10 rental properties in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, so he has done every project imaginable- big and small. Nick is a true craftsman. He takes an ordinary job and makes it look extraordinary. This recent job was to construct a walkway between 2 houses in order to create a water barrier to keep both basements dry. He installed 2 trough type drains running across the width of the walkway and he sloped the walkway very slightly so that water runs away from the house on both sides. He made a beautiful curvature design connecting the walkway with the front patio. He takes such pride in his work... even when it's "just rental property" I really appreciate that! The biggest job Nick has done just prior to the walkway was to bust up an entire basement floor, lower it 12" and pour a 2622 sq ft new concrete floor. He is coming back to acid stain and seal it once the plumber is done. I can't wait to see the finished project! He has also done steps, sidewalks, a raised, stamped courtyard patio, etc. Nick and his crew are extremely professional. They are great dealing with tenants and neighbors and working in cramped city spaces. I am happy to let people know what an excellent craftsman Nick is. He's the real deal.
Description of Work: Nick Scotti created a large double width walkway along the side of a large older home and also constructed a large concrete patio in front creating a beautiful sitting area creating excellent curb appeal.

Nick Scotti's quote was the most expensive of five quotes we obtained. He came with the self-confidence of being in the business for 30 years and knowing everything. We hired him for the price he asked. By the time he was finished we realized that not only there were things he did not know, but he did damages that caused us a lot of problems and money. He replaced a rainwater pipe under the driveway with a thin pipe not designed for this purpose. Moreover, instead of replacing the entire pipe under the driveway, he kept half of the existing one that is close to 50 years old and very brittle. He did not glue the connection and deformed the pipe. He left mud and gravel inside the pipe. We realized all this when water started backing up from the gutter and checked the pipe with a camera. We also found out that there was water leaking from the bad connection. When we informed him about the problem, he came at home unannounced with a friend plumber, refused to accept responsibility, and was rude and offensive. This is what we got after providing complementary coffee, doughnuts, bagels, pizza for five days for him and his five workers, as well as having him and his wife for dinner at our house. Now we have to take care of fixing the pipe under the driveway by ourselves, which is very expensive. Moreover, after 30 years in the business he doesn't know how to dye concrete. Our whole driveway has white spots from efflorescence. He had no clue what the white spots were and said that they will go away after sealing. Of course they didn't and now we have to remove the sealer and take care of the spots ourselves. Also, he mixes the sealer with xylene to increase the quantity at a reduced cost. We are still waiting for the sealer in the joints to dry. This is an update of my earlier review after two years. Two of the driveway slabs have sunk. Shoveling snow today was a problem. There is a large crack in one of the slabs. The concrete is crumbling at the edges everywhere. The color only got worse with the white spots even more pronounced. I asked for opinion from several concrete specialists and all explained the problems with the poor quality of the materials used, as well as not sufficient amount of gravel leading to the sinking. In the meantime he made his lawyer send me a cease and desist letter demanding that I stop writing about the bad quality of his work or he will sue me.
Description of Work: Installed concrete driveway and french drain.

Response from Nick Scotti Concrete Contractor, Inc.
This poor review left above is from a job that was completed almost 3 years ago. This customer left a review on Angie’s List when the job happened and we addressed the issues mentioned then. We find it unfair that Angie’s List will allow a customer to write a review a second time regarding the same job. It is in poor business that Angie’s List allows the same customer to complain multiple times. If this is the case then 1 unhappy customer could result in numerous bad reviews, lowering a company’s overall rating. After we brought this to Angie’s List attention, they removed this customer’s first review. Now, we are left to respond once again to this customer. As we stated before when dealing with this customer, it was a situation where going above and beyond to solve their issues was never enough, combined with this customer going against our better judgement. The issues listed in this customer’s current review, are of environmental causes (both ground settling and 2 harsh winters) and lack of care. We guarantee our work up to 1 year after completion. But our work is made to last much longer, as long as customers take care of the product with proper sealing and care. What this customer is describing is clearly due to them not taken proper care of the concrete. You’ll notice that she did state that we sent her a cease and desist letter, this is true. We had no other choice but to pursue legal action against this customer. Especially since we tried multiple times to resolve the situation and she continues to speak poorly about our work. We work hard to please our customers and to deliver an exceptional project and concrete work but after multiple attempts with this customer, nothing we did was able to please this customer. At the end of it all, not only are we out money on legal fees, but this customer still never paid us fully for the work we delivered. During our time on the job, we delivered extra work and never asked for payment on these extras. The [Removed Member Name], constantly supervised our work and tried to use online research against our 30 years of experience. Our reputation on the BBB and other Angie's List customer's speaks for itself. Our work is 90% referral and/or repeat customers. Unforeseen issues can come up job-sites but in this case we did everything we could to resolve the issue but when there is no reasoning with the customer there is not a whole lot we can do. When looking through Angie's List, you'll see that our customers have always had pleasant experiences when choosing us as contractors.

Mr. Scotti was prompt, personable and professional. He also possesses the artistry of his trade that makes him a rare find. His attention to detail and design has prompted neighbors and even passersby to comment on the improvement in appearance it has made not only to our property but also to the neighborhood.

This man and his team can do my concrete anytime. He redesigned some things that have made our sidewalks much more useable and safe. And what he did to our patio was amazing and very unexpected. I wanted an Omni stone type patio but Nick said it would get to weedy. When I came home he had stamped an old world pattern into the concrete. It feels like an ancient Roman road. Everybody who has seen the work, even our daughters, have said it looks wonderful. He took an old tired house and made it look not so old and tired. He and the team even went so far as to stake up a rose bush that is probably 30 or more years old, so it wouldn't get damaged. I never thought it was possible to get so excited about concrete! They were on time, courteous and cleaned up so well it looked like they weren't even here. We could not be more thrilled.

We couldn't be more impressed with the work that Nick and his team did at our home. All of them are very hard-working, efficient and highly skilled. The job was completed in 2 days, which was amazing, given the scope of work involved. Nick took care to minimize the damage to our lawn and landscaping, as most of the digging was done along the front of our flower beds. Upon completion of the job, our yard was left in the best possible condition. Nick installed two exposed aggregate concrete walkways, which intersect near our front entrance. Both walkways are a lazy "s" design and one of Nick's team used his artistry to curve the edges of the intersection because he thought it would look better. He was right and it looks beautiful. Another of Nick's team was digging a trench for the downspout drainage pipes and took care to cut pieces of sod, so the lawn could be replaced with minimal damage. Nick and his team are great guys and true professionals. They deserve an A+ and a hearty recommendation.
Description of Work: Replaced 55 ft concrete sidewalk from street to front entrance and constructed new 55 ft concrete sidewalk from driveway to front entrance. Replaced downspout drainage pipes for 3 existing downspouts along front of house.

Nick scored the concrete. It now looks as if we have stones on the patio. We are so pleased. We highly recommend this company! Nick takes great pride in his excellent work.

A few years ago, when Nick Scotti was replacing a neighbor's driveway across the street, and later when he built a stone retaining wall there, my wife and I were impressed with the hard work, diligence, and pride of him and his work crew. When it came time for us to replace our concrete driveway, I checked with the owner of the house across the street to get her opinion about her experience with Nick. Her report was filled with high praise. We then considered three bids, including one from Nick. His almost matched the lowest bid ($100 more), but we signed with Nick because of the known quality of his work and because he gave clear and sensible reasons for some options that the other two bidders never mentioned. (He later knocked off $100 from his estimate of curb work we were contemplating). When I requested that he and his workers not disturb us and neighbors with blaring radios, he said, "We don't play radios. There's a time for radios and a time for work." In some ways, my request was laughable, for much of the work is inherently noisy because of jackhammers and equipment. The job took two full days and a part of a third. Watching the teamwork of the five professionals was a pleasure--a combination of acrobatics and ballet--together with the necessary muscle work. The pride, diligence, and skill we had witnessed a few years earlier had not changed. Furthermore everybody showed up even before the promised starting times. At the end of each day, the site was clean and orderly. My wife and I agreed that Nick set the tone and the high quality bar for his team. The results were beautiful, the high quality clearly apparent. Nick Scotti himself is a delight. He's cheerful and upbeat, he knows his craft and profession well, he works hard, he keeps his promises, and he's a perfectionist. From at least one small touch he added to the project (without cost to us), from the elegant stone retaining wall he had built across the street, and from his interests outside his profession, we know that he's more than "a concrete man": he's an artist. We would definitely use him again if the need arose. In fact, near the end of this project, we asked him to look at brick walkways in our backyard that we thought might need refurbishment or replacement. Rather than lead us into another project, he assessed that the walkways were holding up well. In other words, we shouldn't be wasting our money on his repairing or replacing them. For our tastes, that's character.
Description of Work: Removed old concrete driveway and replaced it with concrete. Replaced a deteriorated curb section. Did a small amount of brick repair on the driveway retaining wall.

It went very well. No problems along the way. A very professional company. Nick Scotti came and gave an estimate (written on his business card). They then mailed a contract that detailed what we spoke about. I signed and made a $500 downpayment. The work started the next week as he'd predicted. It took a few days given the size of the job. All the old concrete was removed. There was no trash left behind. The new steps look great.
Description of Work: I needed to replace 34 concrete steps in front of my Greenfield house. I had trouble getting other quotes, so I can't directly speak to price, although my steps were about the same price as two of my neighbor's. They worked quickly, fairly neatly, and the new steps are beautiful. The street in front of the house is very narrow and steep, so the concrete was poured from my backyard (uphill) and carried down to the steps in wheel barrows. Nick is easy to get a hold of and the completed job was what we had agreed on. I would recommend using this concrete contractor.

Nick and his crew were a pleasure to work with. They were neat, and courteous. Nick went beyond what was expected. He thought that we would like a border on our patio and deck and added a beautiful brick look edge. He also made our front entrance look like a stone walk with added color. It is a beautiful job and we enjoy it each day. We will have him come back next year to work on the stone wall in our backyard. We give him our highest recommendation.

Referred to me by someone who used his services for a large concrete pouring job several months earlier. I saw the work myself and it was very good - seems to pay attention to detail. The homeowners were very pleased with the job. He even worked on the site while it was raining. I asked for him to come and give an estimate on a concrete pour for a 52'x36' garage floor. He arrived a few days after initial call to get an estimate. He spent a few minutes surveying the work site and asked for a few details to consider for the pour. He presented me with a business card and an estimate written on the back. He did answer some of my questions but seemed in a rush to leave. No followup phone call was made by him on the estimate. Overall a fair experience but his bid came in very high.

I solicited bids to replace my existing concrete patio (24x12) and replace it with a larger patio (26x18). I contacted Nick Scottie, and we arranged a meeting time. He arrived on time, but he spent the least amount of time looking at the job or discussing options of all of the contractors I contacted -- he seemed like he was in a hurry. His bid was the highest, at $6,000, more than 50% higher than the bid I went with.

Nick Scotti and his team arrived at my home and went to work. They removed the concrete stairs, leaving the brick walls in tact, repoured the stairs and actually made changes that improved the overall function and look of the staircase. To say that I am happy with the work done by Nick Scotti Cpncrete Contracting, Inc. is an understatement. They came to my home, immediately started working; they brought everything they needed with them and when they were done it was as if they were never there....except for the fact that they left me with a beautiful new front porch. Now I have the nicest porch on the block and I did not have to pay as much as some of my neightbors who had the work done by other contractors.

Not applicable, since we ended up doing a different job than the one recommended/bid on by this contractor.
Description of Work: Nick Scotti responded quite promptly to my request for an estimate on repair/replacement of our front porch flooring (part of the porch had sunc about an inch) He came and made an estimate - saying that the entire porch should be replaced - I believe his estimate on the job was $3300 - my wife was home when he came for the estimate - I was not home. The estimate was in the form of a dollar amount written on the back of his business card - not a formal contract indicating what he would do for the $3300. We went with another contractor who simply repaired the poroch floor with a concrete layer over the sunken section.($1000) Scotti's approach may have been the correct way to go, but we preferred to try the lesser investment at this time.

They removed every single bit of concrete in my mother?s front and back yard.
