Water Softener / Carbon Filter Service
Description of Work: We have an issue with some brown residue being left in certain places. We have a whole house carbon filter and softener (separate units). I used the chat feature on their website to confirm Elek serviced my brand softener and filter valve (Fleck), which they confirmed they did. The technicians arrived and the first response was "we don't work on these". He gave multiple possibilities for what the problem may be. Eventually, he decided that we should have them install a sediment filter to trap ($500) whatever this debris was... Despite not troubleshooting the issue and essentially giving me an estimate for new unrelated work, he tried to charge the service fee ($100). To Elek's credit, when I pushed back, the technician called the office and eventually waived the service fee, but it was an uncomfortable situation. I had another company come out and confirm very quickly that the carbon filter simply needed to be re-bedded. Eventually the carbon loses its effectiveness and must be removed and replaced. He also tested the water and confirmed no additional filter was needed. The technician was professional and friendly, but here's where they fell short: - Elek office told me they worked on a product before the visit. Then said they didn't when they got here. - Misdiagnosed the issue, which at the end of the day didn't have to do with the actual valve. - tried to up-sell me on something that would not have resolved the root issue I view interactions with service provided in a pretty straight forward manner: "would I trust them to go into my mom's home and do the right thing?" In this case, they failed that test pretty significantly...

The plumber was punctual and fastidious. He protected his work area with protective coverings. He cleaned up his work area and made it spotless. Upon completion of the work he sat with my wife and I and explained the billing. (which is a company required procedure.) I highly recommend this company.

A real person (not a pre-recorded voice message) answered the phone when I called, and gave me a time frame for a plumber to respond, and service details, all pleasantly and professionally. True to her best estimate (within 2 hours), a plumber arrived at the site. He (Nathan) was very professional, courteous, and friendly. He explained the pricing possibilities (listed in his binder that he showed us). He explained what he actually did do to remedy the problem. My husband and I were very satisfied from start to finish. This was the first time we used William Elek, Ltd, and will no doubt use them again should the need arise.

Never again!!!! They charged us $800 for a new faucet (which I then priced at Home Depot and it was less than $100, so it was a cheap one) and some minor fix it on the laundry faucet. The guy even told me that he spaces out his work so he only does 2 jobs a day (little did I know that he'd be charging me for the time he was talking to me). I would never ever use them again. ( and it's actually unfortunate because I had previously used them -- in the 90s -- and I thought they were expensive, but did an ok job. But this is just ridiculous.

After installing the granite countertops and the new sink, I found out that the granite contractor wasn't going to install the plumbing and he didn't coordinate his plumber to come. Faced with having to deal on the long Labor Day weekend and part of the next week without a functioning kitchen sink. I called Wm. Elek, who I had positive dealings both with a former BNI member as well as the work they did on maintaining my A/C unit in the past. They sent someone over in less than an hour. After looking over the sink, the plumber said that it would take substantial work to rearrange the pipes under the sink to install both the drain as well as the garbage disposal. So, I told him to go ahead and just hook up the sink and we'd do the garbage disposal later. He set a timer (so I set one also) for two hours, saying that if he ran over that, he would have to charge extra. He got most of it done within the 2 hour limit but spent another hour on trying to fix a small leak in a pipe. THREE hours and almost $700 later with really no parts (although he charged $90 for some fittings and an elbow) since I provided the faucet) he leaves with the garbage disposal sitting by itself. The last hour he was sitting there tightening and untightening things while talking on the phone and then left. e To add insult to injury, I finally got a call from my contractor who sent his plumber, David Pence, over to assess the work left to do. Remember that this was the "big job" that the other plumber was going to charge an arm and a leg for. David said it would be about $150 to redo everything and install the garbage disposal. After an hour he was done, with professional results and he charged the whopping sum of only $135!! So, the best and the worst with one sink. You be the judge!

The plumbers and heating technicians have always been great. We have used the company for years, first for plumbing and then to replace our 50 year old oil furnace/boiler with a new high efficiency Weil McClain Boiler about 4 years ago. We are just so disappointed with the recent lack of customer service from the office, and their unwillingness to continue to serve us. We don't understand their decision to stop offering maintenance to new customers and we don't understand why we were considered a new customer when we have been using the company for years. Maybe our business was too small to matter to them. Whatever the case, we feel abandoned. Hence, the "lousy" rating we feel compelled to report on them.
Description of Work: We purchased a new boiler from Elek about 4 years ago. We also have used their plumbing services for years before that. They have always come in case of emergency and live up to the 24/7 promise. The plumbers and the heating technicians have always done a great job, have been very professional, and thorough. When we had a problem at 5AM a few weeks ago when we had no heat or hot water, I called for help and a repairman was here shortly after 6 AM. He fixed the immediate problem and got the system running but he suggested we needed maintenance on the boiler since the igniter and the sensors have a tendency to wear out and with a maintenance contract, they would keep them maintained/replaced so that we would never had a surprise outage related to things that should be fixed via routine maintenance. I called the office to set up the maintenance contract and was told they are not taking new maintenance customers. I explained that we bought the system from them and have had their excellent mechanics come over to fix it several times already so we are not new customers. I spoke to the service manager, who spoke to the owner, and all agreed they are not taking on new maintenance customers, and they considered us "new". We would probably have agreed to continue to pay by the hour if that was an alternative but they gave us no indication that they wanted to continue to service us at all. It was truly the strangest conversation I can recall with a service company. We are now in the process of trying to find another company to maintain the furnace and become our new plumber. We have never heard of a business turning away a repeat customer. I cannot believe their company will stay in business long with that attitude. It is very sad that the new owners are not living up to the long history of the company's level of service.

At first, I selected Elek by searching out a company in Allentown that claimed to have experience with Mini-Split Units. I called and spoke with several people before agreeing to even have them come out to my home. It was nearly what you could consider an interview. Once they came out they provided an estimate, which was very costly, but I figured worth it because I *THOUGHT* I was getting a knowledgeable contractor. I am willing to pay top dollar for good service. As it turned out after the job began, they only have one person on staff with very limited knowledge of ductless systems. They technicians had to keep calling this person on the nextel to ask questions and get guidance on what should have been done. They performed the work and then my problem immediately got worse. Here is where things started to go wrong. When I called them to work out the issues, the supervisor (Derek) started to refer to job notes on the invoice. I had a yellow copy of the same invoice that had no such job notes. It was a hassle to get them to honor their workmanship warranty on the job and it ended up costing me even more. Just as they finished fixing their errors, a part failed on one of the units. We ordered the part and they sent another technician to install it. He did not install the part correctly, and then failed to put the unit back together properly. I found out because when I operated the unit to test it, it nearly fell off the wall. Literally it was missing mounting screws!! I called and demanded to speak with a service manager, who promised to return the extra parts and screws that I would need to have another contractor put the unit back together properly. He never showed up. He instead sent one of his secretaries out to do the job for him. When I asked the secretary how this can happen, she remarked "We had a lot of these problems and a lot of dissatisfied customers, but we thought he fixed all that. I guess not" --- well that about sums it up. Elek is more expensive than other contractors in the Lehigh Valley, but the quality of service is just poor. This is one experience that firms up the saying "Expensive isn't quality!" because they REALLY drive that point home. The real strength of a company is when you are called to handle tricky or complex situations. Elek fails miserably.

We have used Elek in the past for our furnace cleaning and any other plumbing issues. They have always been professional and anyone sent to our home was very nice. They didn't mind answering any questions I had. Naturally, when our furnace died, we called them. The service tech was efficient and called Brian right away. He arrived at our house within the hour and had our new furnace ordered and installed within a 1 1/2 days!!! You will never go wrong with this company!!! They work with you, are professional, respond immediately and are great to work with!!!

All told, it took Elek plus 3 of their subcontractors to complete the job. I made the initial call to them in late May of 2012 and it took until September to finally complete it. The cost ballooned from about $8,000 to over $20,000 when it was all said and done. Luckily my homeowner?s insurance paid for about 60% of this. They seemed to have poor internal communication, and even worse with their subcontractors. I would use Elek for small to moderate jobs such as the water heater replacement, but not big projects. I plan a bathroom remodel in the next year or two and will not be calling Elek for that project.
Description of Work: I had my water heater replaced a few years ago by Elek. They seemed to do a good job, and price was comparable to other contractors I got bids from. So when my sewer (lateral to city sewer main) backed-up I contacted them again. They determined with a camera that my sewer lateral was terracotta pipe and had broken and collapsed underground. After the initial diagnosis it took about a week to schedule excavation for repair. They ended up digging a 10 foot deep trench in my back yard and couldn’t find the pipe. They backfilled the hole and called the company owner, Don, to come out and help determine what to do next. By this time I would get a few inches of water on my basement floor when using the shower or laundry. They then decided to try digging in my side yard. It took almost 2 weeks to schedule this. Their delays are unreasonable; probably due to the fact they use a subcontractor for excavation and do not have their own heavy equipment. Furthermore, they do a lot of work for Lehigh University - residential customers seem to take a back seat in their queue. When Elek finally showed up the second time they did find the sewer lateral, but then determined that they needed to break-up the concrete floor of my basement to tie in my house sewer to the lateral and city main. They included the cost to put up plastic sheeting in my basement to reduce the spread of dust during this demolition. Their workers never put up the plastic and my basement and first floor were literally coated in dust and debris. (They did deduct the cost for the plastic, but I spent 2 weeks cleaning up the mess.) They ran new pipe and partially backfilled the yard with gravel, stating they don’t do finish landscaping. I was told I needed to get my own landscaper to place topsoil and seed it. After some negotiating, they agreed to have it done by yet another sub of theirs. Also, another different subcontractor was called in to replace the concrete floor in the basement.

They are a bunch of liars. They took over 6 months to get the work done. They never came when they said they were going to. They didn’t know how to do the work and I wound up having to finish it myself. They would lie to my face. They would tell me one thing and then deny that they said it. The price was competitive with most other people. It wasn’t terrific; it wasn’t bad, it was fair. The price was not the problem. They were incompetent and didn’t know how to do the work. I wound up working with the guys, doing half of it myself the last day they were here to get the job finished.

Had them replace the "builders special" Furnace and A/C unit that was installed when the hose was built. They did an excellent job with the installation - the new unit's installation is so much neater then what the builder did. The new unit furnace is so quiet you do not even hear it run anymore! The technicians that did the installation where professional, courteous, and knowledgeable. They communicated to me what they where doing and when, if I had any questions they answered them quickly and politely. In order to run some of the new AC wiring/plumbing they had to remove the drop ceiling in order to do their work. When they where done with the job, you could not even tell they did anything. They had drop cloths down to catch debris and put everything back. I am very pleased with what they did and would not hesitate to use them again.

Not great. They showed up with a professional crew. They remediated the backup, but did not check the work. within a week, after cleaning the basement again, it backed up again, causing a whole new expensive finished area cleanup. I had the insist they use a camera and confirm the issue was fixed at my cost again. it was only then they found a broken pipe, which they excavated and fixed. They left me a a large mount of dirt which I now have to hire someone to fix, and I asked them to fix an outdoor spigot before they left, they looked at it, broke it off, and left. (and later offered to come and fix. (and I pay the come-out fee?)... overpriced and not impressed.
