Description of Work: Ray put up a new ceiling fan, fixed a leaking sprayer and set an electrical box and light into the hallway ceiling.

Description of Work: Ray installed new garage door openers for both my garage doors, all with key pad entry and remote access. He also added an outlet in the garage and did some electrical re - wiring. In addition to that he installed a new home water filter system.

+ -1 moreThis is our second time with Ray, and its always a pleasure. Just a very nice honest person to deal with, with great prices. Ray came two separate times, the first to fix the toilet and give estimates for the gas line and to do a general appraisal of the tubs (what the problem was, why there were leaking). The second to do the gas line work and remaining plumbing. Ray is a master plumber so its nice to not have to worry about any job being too difficult. It just gets done. I think its especially notable that Ray will try to find the best solution and he's always thinking of cost to the customer. He's always very clear about the options available and the trade offs.
Description of Work: Moved gas line into the joists in the basement so that we can sheet rock the ceiling. Fixed toilet which was shifting around and handle which kept falling off. Adjusted piping for tub facets that was causing leaking.

+ -1 moreRay arrives on time every time. Besides his excellent work, what really sets him apart is that he goes to great lengths to keep the worksite as neat as possible. When he is finished, you will not have not have to spend hours cleaning up as we have done in the past with other workmen. We are confident that Ray can tackle any job!
Description of Work: Ray has done several jobs for us and each time we were very pleased. This time he removed wallpaper, applied a coat of skimcoat to even the walls, applied a primer, put two finish coats of paint on the ceiling and walls, and painted all of the trim and doors in the room. He also changed all of the old black outlets and wall switch to new white ones.

+ 0 moreFrom start to finish, he is what I want in a worker. He calls when he is supposed to call. He gives estimates that are reliable. He is polite. He even dresses right for the job! He belongs on a television show-he's that perfect of a representation of what a handyman should be. He gave me an estimate and completed the job within days of when I wanted the job done. I got more than my money's worth.
Description of Work: In addition to a handyman, he is a master plumber. Thus, instead of charging $80-$100 per hour, he only charges a flat $50 per hour. For one of the jobs I wanted done, he put in a new vanity. In order to do this, he had to take out an existing sink. He had to raise the existing valves which took some extra work. The two other plumbers that I called didn't mention that the valves needed to be raised. Ray told me right up front that other plumbers probably wouldn't do that but it would be best if the valves were raised. I liked his honesty. Now that the job is done, I can see(inside the vanity)that the valves ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE THANKS TO RAY. I had him do some other plumbing work, too. I am very pleased with his work.

He assessed the job, and was creative in suggesting alternate solutions and ways in which to best get the job done. He gave me a quote and arrived again promptly when he promised to do the work. It is rare to find a professional who is willing to do just a small job and who really cares about his work ethic and the quality of the job. He knows his stuff and he is a nice man! I would not hesitate to recommend Mr. Garvin to anyone.
Description of Work: I needed a kitchen sink with garbage disposal removed from the countertop and then replaced several days later.

+ 4 moreI contacted Ray because I was concerned about the dryer venting. He came promptly and inspected the attic venting and reassured me that everything was fine. He returned a month later and completed the electrical and general handyman work. He was very conscientious and arrived with all the needed materials. He cleaned up after himself. He was very pleasant to do business with. I'm going to schedule him to repair my gutters.
Description of Work: Inspection of dryer venting; light bulbs replaced; outlets replaced; light fixture replaced; hole patched with plywood; banister reinforced; gutters inspected.

Description of Work: Mr. Garvin responded to my request for an estimate with the following email: Good Morning, I'm sorry that I did not get back to you right away. I have been very busy and for the most part I have not taken on any new work for over a month. I am booked so far in advance that I can not even give an estimate when I could do the work. Thank you very much for contacting me but I must decline the job. Thanks again, Ray Garvin. My original message: Mr. Ray Garvin: I obtained your email address from the Angie's List Web site for gutter repairs. The gutter seams at the four corners on the second story gutters of my house are leaking and must be re-caulked. I would like an estimate for the repairs. Thanks. Richard C. Gretzinger.

+ -1 moreRay told me right away what was causing the front hallway leak, explained very clearly what he needed to do to correct the problem and gave me an estimate. He (and his son) showed up when scheduled, fixed the gutter and drain pipes for exactly the amount quoted. Since then, no leaks and he cleaned up completely. When I returned home from work, there was no debris on the lawn or elsewhere.
Description of Work: Repaired, replaced, re-routed gutter and drain pipes. Work was done in 2007.

+ 0 moreRay is very knowledgeable, skilled, and trustworthy. Although I find this work a bit pricey, I trust his judgment and am pleased with the quality of his work. He is familiar with older houses and older systems (eg HVAC). I definitely trust Ray with this old house and its problems.
Description of Work: Ray has done a number of different kinds of jobs for me in a 1950's 3 bedroom split-level. The two biggest are added returns to even out temperature throughout a 3 bedroom split level house (ca 2500 sq ft) that is always much warmer upstairs. This turned out to be a fairly complicated job requiring several visits and a considerable number of hours. As Ray promised, the new returns made a noticeable difference this summer, temperature differential between the top and bottom levels was less. The bedrooms are more comfortable, and the bottom level (with vents closed) not so cold when the AC runs. Second job was Ray fixed a leak in the master bath stall shower. This took several visits to figure out, the source was not apparent, but Ray persevered and eventually found the source and fixed the leak. It was a difficult problem and a messy repair job (it's an old, fairly small tile shower). I don't remember the exact price, but it may have been around $350.

This job was in a cramped corner, which he navigated without the slightest hesitation or complaint. His work has a clean precise quality, the drain/piping he installed was sturdy and cleanly applied. He tested his work thoroughly when finished. I would recommend Ray to my friends, and he will definitely be my first choice next time I have a plumbing need.
Description of Work: Ray replaced the drain/piping for our washing machine sink, and repaired our toilet which wasn't flushing properly.

He called in advance to confirm his arrival time and to ask if I could turn off the power to the water heater and drain the tank prior to his arrival to reduce his time on site. Ray arrived on time and worked efficiently to complete the assignment. He also helped me remove the old heater from the basement.
Description of Work: Mr. Garvin attempted to replace the heating elements in my ten year old electric water heater first, but the elements were corroded in place due to the high mineral content of our well water. Mr. Garvin then shopped for, delivered and installed a new hot water heater, and re-plumbed the hot and cold piping to fit the new unit.

+ 0 moreRay was timely in his initial response and on time for the evaluation visit. Initial idea of a wooden cover was replaced by metal cover held in place by magnets. Ray dropped off a sample piece of metal cover to get my confirmation prior to creating final piece. Rear gutter was blown day to day before water meter cover installed. Ray evaluated and returned when weather cleared up to repair. Very pleasant and positive experience. Fair price. Would use again.

+ -1 moreRay responded in an appropriate time period to my email. He came to look at the job and then returned to do the work on the day and time we agreed to. Most of the doors required some adjustment or planing. After each task was finished, Ray ask me to inspect it. I was able to approve each job. He then cleaned up that area and moved to the next. When he finished the entire job, he cleaned up the walkway from the porch to the front door as well as cleaned the porch itself.
Description of Work: Ray weathered stripped three exterior doors and made sure that all interior doors opened and closed properly.

+ 3 moreRay returned my call promptly and arrived on time for a preliminary estimate. He took careful notes of the repairs needed. He was friendly and helpful. While one of the projects (repair/replacement of a door frame) was not of a type that he could perform, he was able to recommend a sensible course of action that would help to resolve the problem. Ray also arrived on time for the scheduled work, was friendly and helpful. The ladder he brought was not high enough for the downspout, so he went home to pick up the right one and did not charge for the time to do so. Overall the work was done well. We would be glad to hire Ray again.
Description of Work: Caulked bath tub, ran wire, stapled to rafters in craw space under family room for stereo speakers, cleaned out clogged downspout, reversed incorrectly installed plumbing lines on vanity.
