SFW was hired to repair dry rot behind some siding. The deconstruction and dry rot repair was done expertly in only one day, and the cost for that was very reasonable. However, the residing took way too long, and the costs escalated unbelievably fast. The final cost of the project was almost 6 times that of the tear-off and structural repair. If I had it to do over again I would get bids from others for the residing, then have SFW do the tear off and structural repair. I truly believe this would have saved about 50% of the cost of a very expensive project. Lesson learned.

Overall the project went very well. As with any construction project we had a few hiccups, but Steve was very responsive and we were able to move forward comfortably. The reason I gave them a B on the cost is they were much more expensive then other people who've done similar work, but they are also very particular about their work. The job was billed hourly. I would hire them again and have recommended them to a number of friends and neighbors.

As expected we could not tell the extent of the damage until after the hardy plank was off. The three windows had rot around them and needed the under planking redone. Once we got scheduled the work went very good.

Pleased with SFW professionalism, and documentation of damage and related repairs. Nature of repair such that precise cost estimate is not feasible because extent of damage can't be understood until enough de-construction is done to expose damaged areas. That said, their cost was within estimate range and the timely updates for actual costs being incurred was very helpful. My only suggestion for improvement was that their final report, which included before and after images, could benefit from naming the damage pictures instead just keeping default image file number. All in all I found SFW to be very professional in their approach, no 'surprises' re cost of repair, and I would recommend them to others.
Description of Work: Structural restoration for water intrusion/damage. Selected SFW based on review of Angies list and respective recommendations. SFW contracted to repair structural rot from water intrusion at failed chimney flashing that in turn resulted in water intrusion behind wall sheathing and resultant damage to rim joist, stud wall stud structure, lower level window header, and surrounding sheathing. Project involved replacement of upper story exterior door, and lower story window.

The team at SFW was very helpful and provided several options and price points. They allowed us to choose the best time to have the door delivered and installed and it all went very smoothly. We noticed what seemed to be a leak in a different part of the house while they were there, and they happily investigated and helped us determine it wasn't a problem. When I noticed a minor gap in the door after installation, the foreman even made a visit on his day off to fix it. Great, great team.
Description of Work: I had purchased an Angie's List deal for some dry rot, but it turned out we needed an entire door replaced.

I will say that the workmanship was generally high, the carpenters & painters very professional, and the results good. The team-members reported on any incidental issues to discus before proceeding - which I appreciated. But the project proved frustratingly complicated. Would I use SFW again? Perhaps. I think the folks who do the work are very good, and take the extra steps (like painting every surface of what goes into stair railings, and carefully caulking everywhere) to do a lasting job - though I do have some criticisms. But the management & administrative processes need serious attention. This was a small job, straightforward and completely visible as to what had to be done - replacing & painting 3 exterior porch/deck stair railings along with a damaged exterior door fascia and a mailbox support - with cedar. We have a 1930s cottage with some nice woodwork touches (which weren't rot-resistant) supported on visible pressure-treated structures. I bought a half-price Angie's Coupon - and called in for an estimate, since I could vary the scope depending on what the estimate was. I was told that estimates were not done - since the extent of wood-rot often isn't evident. True, but I've dealt with enough such considerably more complicated over decades - so I persisted. Estimates provided, the scope was settled and the work was done in two phases - carpentry, then painting a couple weeks later (to accommodate our travel). SFW works on a Time & Material basis and that is what the client's bill is based on - but the daily T&M summaries provided were very inaccurate. I don't know whether this was due to mis-reporting, mis-communicating, assumptions, inaccurate data entry, or software issues. Fortunately I'm retired and was at home full-time - so I went through the exercises to get these figures corrected. I will stress - Accurate Timekeeping is Mandatory! There is a Punchlist (I have to sign off that I'm satisfied at each step) but minor items can be handed off from Carpentry to Painting. I did notice excess in caulking nail/screw holes and was told this would be dealt with by Painting - OK. I did not notice some very burred areas on some of the bannisters (even more noticeable after painting) - and apparently the carpenters and painters did not either. There was no final job punchlist - so at some point I'll sand these and re-paint. There is also a difference between hourly rates charged for carpentry and painting work. Fortunately I had gone through the exercise to get these rates - the initial charge was going to be all at the higher of the two rates. After that was settled, the Angie's coupon was going to be applied at the lower of the rates - but that was corrected on re-reading the terms.

SFW had the unenviable task of taking my almost-new home and making it rot free and mold free, no thanks to the original builder who took shortcuts. Their crew was efficient, explained everything, and I now have a weather-tight home with a lovely new paint job. I am so glad that I used SFW and would recommend them to anyone who needs a quality professional.

The dry rot involved some wood trim below stucco, and is in the very front of the house. I had put this work off for quite a while because I was worried about the repair dislodging the stucco above and around the wood trim. The employees who did the work really knew what they were doing and there was no damage to the stucco. I was also concerned about the leaded glass window below where the work was being done so they brought a big sheet of plywood to cover it during the repair. The crew arrived early each day. They were diligent, efficient, thorough and cleaned up after themselves at the end of the day. They also showed me the steps that they took to insure that the repairs would prevent the issue from recurring in the future.

I purchased, through Angies List, 2 hours of roof repairs for $99. Almost immediately I was called by SFW. I explained all I needed was to have 3 ridge caps reattached. I was told I would be put in the queue. When I heard nothing in 2 weeks I sent an email to find out my status in the queue. Shortly, I received a call and was told a "crew" would be out in the morning to start my "project". When I explained again all I needed was to have 3 ridge caps reattached, she agreed I did not need a "crew" and perhaps one of their men would do it on their way home some evening. Perfect! About a week later I received a call at 8:15am. Two men would come out to do the repair if OK. I said it would be OK but it needed to be done by 11:00 as we were going away for a week and had a plane to catch. She said it was not a problem and they would be at my home in an hour. The 2 men were (at 9:00) but they had to wait for their work trailer. That showed sometime after 9:30. I showed the men the ridge caps needing repair but they said they didn't have the correct nails and would have to go get them. About 10:15 I went out to see how things were going. Nothing had been done. In addition to the nails, they also needed silicone. And they were having a problem with how to attach the safety equipment to the house. At this point I'm wondering what's going on. Then one of the men said they had been directed by the office to do a window repair. How it got from reattaching ridge caps to a window repair is beyond me. By now, it's close to 10:30 so I told the 2 men to forget it. One of them apologized for the confusion but the ridge caps are not fixed and I'm out $99.

Main complaint was that I paid when work was schedule for 4-6 weeks from date of paying and scheduling. I was put off more weeks and after 7 weeks I was told it would be another couple of weeks. After speaking firmly with the scheduling agent they came out within a few days later. I know my job was smaller than most, but.... The work done by Noah and his assistant was excellent. They worked diligently to get it done swiftly and didn't drag their heels as has been done with other contractors I have used in the past.

It didn't. This company is not reputable. They do not give estimates they just want to work at $74.50 an hour with no parameters. They tried to turn a 4 hour job into a 10 hour job. I wouldn't allow work to be done by someone who refuses to give an estimate and wants an open tab to work.

The deck was approximately 12’ x 6’ with 8 stairs to the patio. The construction individuals that came to the house and did the work were fantastic. This was a priority job (which is part of the problem later described). The men were on time and worked very hard to get the project completed. They were fantastic and I would hire that crew again in a minute. The issue with the job may have been due to my not knowing the questions to ask or how some of the terminology used would affect the outcome. This small deck cost approximately $17000 to complete. The supervisors came out and added parts that they said needed to be completed which included removing a sliding door - then reinstalling, removing the siding on the outside wall of the house and replacing and redoing wiring. When I contacted the company and expressed that I needed to have it done relatively quickly I believed that the job would take 2-3 days maximum and believed the cost would be $25 an hour more than normal. I was not aware that it would be $25 more an hour for each person who was on the job site - which ranged from 3 - 5 people depending on the day. When I questioned the replacement of the siding I was told that was the only way that they could guarantee the work. The siding was not in bad shape - not split or coming off. The construction personnel made the comment that they were not sure why it was coming off. The job that I believed would be 2-3 days was 7-8 days and kept getting more expensive. I wish that they would have come out talked with me about the project and given a true bid for the work prior to starting. I have learned a great deal about this process and have learned not to use this construction company again.
