The Amelanchier trees need to be sprayed for Pacific Coast Pear Rust before bud-break or the treatment isn't terribly effective. Halstead's showed up about 10 days too late. They sprayed, but as expected, it wasn't terribly effective. Getting Halsteads to show up in a timely manner was an on-going issue. Communication was poor both by email and phone. It was just too much hassle to deal with them, so I found another pesticide company to do the work. It's gone much better with them.

It went really well. The crew arrived on time; they were friendly and answered any questions I had. They all seemed to work well together. I was nervous at first because this was such a huge project, but the crew knew exactly what they were doing. It was a very good experience. The price included pruning and cabling of the other cedar tree in my back yard. I would highly recommend Josh and his crew for any tree service.

I thought the price was too high for what was done. The owner/manager was very slow in getting back to me in regard to time of service (like 10 days) I was expected to pay the total charge when the birch had not been removed. I paid the cost without the birch tree. Then the tree was taken out immediately and I paid the rest.

It was tricky scheduling the actual appointment. Once the appointment was set, they showed up on time and got right to work. They only trimmed what was needed and cleaned up and mulched all of the big stuff during the time they were here. It looks great and they did a good job. Thanks

I called Halstead's for an estimate to cut down the Scotch pine, and they came out two days later and left an estimate. I called a week later to see when they could come out, and they actually fit me their schedule for the next day! I was told by another company that I would have to wait a month. Halstead's has done work for me before, so that may have helped getting me on their schedule. They said they would be there at 8:30 a.m., but actually arrived at 8:00 ready to go. Josh and another worker made short work of cutting down our 30-foot Scotch pine, and they took away everything, even cleaning the old pine needles off our driveway. And I asked them to trim some branches off a large white pine in our backyard, and they trimmed quite a few branches and hauled those away as well, andthey didn't even charge me for that service! They've always done a great job, and I will calling them again to trim more trees.

They came out punctually and did exactly what I needed them to do. They did it for the price that they quoted to me. My tree looks very nice. They were recommended to me by several other people as well.

A horticulturist came out and gave me a price for the work I wanted done. He gave me information about the tree. We set a date to have the work done. They came out. I was not needed at home. Later when some dead branches got stuck and looked unattractive, they returned to remove them.

I called and Pete called back the same day, was able to come out the next morning for an estimate, and fit me into the schedule the following day. I was very pleased with their promptness. The tree was quickly removed and the crew was efficient and polite.

We are very pleased. The trimmed trees look great. all of the mess from both trees that were removed was cleaned up as requested. We were left enough bark mulch for several yards. They ever cut down a dead tree for no additional cost.

Phil was quick with estimates and scheduling. The workers spent two days trimming and hauling away the branches. Everything was cleaned up nicely. Very pleased. They also took down my mother-in-law's 40 foot blue spruce tree,($1,000.00) amazing to watch them cut off every branch as they walked up the tree. All traces of the tree were removed, including grinding up the stump.

The person I talked to on the phone advised me on the Portland permit process (since these were street trees), and one of the certified arborists came out and did an estimate. Then, after I obtained the permit for pruning, I scheduled the work for the following week. They sent 2 guys who arrived exactly on time (well, 10 minutes early) and spent 5-6 hrs overall - one climbing up in the trees on a rope and one working below. They answered all my questions and were very willing to discuss the work. The trees look much better now and they left the area clean. They also cut, to firewood length, the few largish branches that were pruned. I felt that I got a very professional job from people who know and care a lot about trees. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Halstead's to others. I did not get any competitive bids, so I don't know really whether $900 was cheap or expensive for the work - that's my only reason for a "B" on price.

Phil gave me a bid on the job the same day I called. He said they were scheduled for 2 or 3 weeks, but then called later and got my job in early due to a cancellation. Three men arrived early, worked very hard all day. One climbed the trees to do the cutting and the others hauled stuff into the chipper. All were easy to communicate with and we made a couple of changes to the job.

I had used this company twice before, several years apart (we have lived in this house for 20 years), and had always been pleased with the quality and price of the work. I checked the List this time to look at others' experiences. We got one bid from another company first, which seemed high. I called Halstead's, and after a bit of initial phone tag, we connected. That day Phil came out to the house and went through the job in detail. He remembered the house and some of the trees, having done some of the previous work. After Phil wrote everything down, he carefully read back the work order - not a mumbled speed-read - so we could all make sure everything was accounted for. When the crew arrived about 10 days later, they were polite, professional, efficient - and cleaned up everything. They offered us pruning style choices on the apple tree - orchard or aesthetic. They immediately followed through on the couple of tweaks I wanted on the cedars (e.g., prune "bushiness" to keep from touching the deck).

Halstead's gave me a consultation about the trees surrounding my 1950s ranch house. They described in detail the kinds of trees I had, their ages, and possible care options. This was a very informative process; I felt like I had commissioned my own Discovery Channel show. Particularly helpful to me was the reassurance that several trees we had worried about were in safe condition. They then provided me a complete estimate of all the work that they might do. We couldn't afford to do all the work they suggested, but we decided to have them take down one large catalpa tree that was dying. Halstead's subtracted the cost of the consultation from the cost of removing the tree. They let me know in advance exactly how much the cost of the job would be, what paperwork they needed, and when they would arrive. They did precisely what they said they would. They did the job during the day while I was at work, though my husband saw them do it and was impressed with their skill and care. They sent several people to remove the tree, which was close to our house, the neighbor's house, and several utility lines. When I returned home the tree was reduced to firewood-sized rounds, and all the brush was removed. In fact, our yard was tidier than it had been when they arrived. Great job, guys - I'll use you again.

Halstead's was by far the cheapest quote I received for the service. They promptly sent someone out to give me a quote (compared to phone quotes from competitors) and we were able to schedule the service the same day I called. Their team showed up on time and removed the tree. The stump was ground out two days later. They performed the service with a great deal of professionalism and cleaned up all related debris. I will use them again for any future tree or landscaping services.

Contacted Phil for consultation on health of the tree, set up a time and date to evaluate the Oak and Phil was right on time. We needed several large limbs removed that were contacting the roof and the tree has one large seam we were concerned about. Phil explained in detail what needed to be done and yet maintain the beauty of the Oak. We scheduled his crew to come out and they were right on time, very professional and followed the quote description perfectly, which included the installation of two cross cables up in the tree to help support the multiple trunk seams. They removed bin after bin of dead and removed branches, installed the cables and cleaned up everything before leaving. The crew covered up annuals and anything that needed protected on the ground. This tree is in a small backyard with limited access and many plants around it. Everyone we dealt with was courteous, honest and professional, and our tree looks absolutely perfect, the way we wanted it. A job very well done.

Phil returned my call quickly, came by to estimate the job and left an estimate in the front door. I called after the holidays to schedule the job. The workers arrived on time and were polite and considerate. They asked my permission to severely prune the Japanese maple before proceeding, knowing that a favorite tree! There was quite a bit of debris, especially from the pine tree, but it was all gone when they left (including what fell into my neighbor's yard). My yard looks great now.

We had several bids and they were close to the least expensive. They were really thorough and fast. They went right to work and worked well as a team.

Yesterday, the Halstead's crew completed the third tree service job for us and we were again completely satisfied. From the original friendly contact with their representative Phillip Whitcomb, to the actual work on the trees everything was professionally done. We had a very tall fir tree thinned again and a large oak tree removed. The project went quickly and perfectly. The price was right, the people were great and the clean-up was perfect. We appreciated dealing with an honest and competent company.

Estimate was given very quickly and was very competitive. Work was done quickly and yards were cleaned up very well.

These people provided outstanding service. They came to provide an estimate and then performed the work right on time. The crew taking down the trees knew what they were doing and worked quickly. After the project was completed, the tree trunks and branches were removed and the yard cleaned up nicely. The entire project was completed in about four hours. I can recommend this company without reservation. They do good work.

THE CREW THAT DID THE TREE TOPPING DID A VERY THOROUGH JOB OF PRUNING AND THINNING THE TREES ON A VERY DIFFICULT PIECE OF PROPERTY. THEY ALSO CLEANED UP THE DEBRIS AND LEFT THE SITE IN GOOD CONDITION.
