 + -1 moreGreat! They could have conjured up any plausible mechanical reason, charged me plenty, and I wouldn't have known the difference. Turns out I had pored way too much oil in the reservoir. They charged me a very modest inspection and cleanup fee, including a plug and little replacement filter. Can't be treated more fairly than that. V. Mason

 + -1 moreThis time: The clutch got fixed but the pull cord had to be pulled out 4 feet past the handle and it still wouldn't catch. Took it back and the 'manager' said that that was how the factory was set up. I asked how it was that it fell off of the pulley and had to be pulled out 4 ft if it was factory. He told me that he wouldn't fix and I had to do it. Needless to say I wasn't happy and ended up taking it. He refused to fix it and I ended up paying $140 for the services. Time before: Took my mower in for service and the guy in the shop yelled at me to clean my mower next time before I bring it in. Should have learned my lesson then. Will not bring anything to them again.

 + -1 moreHave had multiple dealings. 1) Bought reconditioned yard vac from them that initially worked great. Then it started leaking oil. 2) Took it in, they fixed the leak (though it was dripping oil much worse when they gave it to me to take home, and they had to finish the job before sending it out) but immediately we could not start it. 3) Took it in, now it starts, but often dies immediately thereafter. Can run only on full-on Choke setting (not the case previously). Cannot run at full speed and power. I Took in Toro mower, also for oil leak. Since then it fails to re-start if has been running and then has been stopped for more than two minutes. It has to remain idle for at least 20 minutes once it is idle for a few minutes . It seems that each repair results immediately in a new problem.
Description of Work: Fixed oil leak on yard vac. Also addresses subsequent problem that arose after first repair. Also fixed oil leak in lawn mower.

 + -1 moreIt took about 4 weeks for the repair to be completed, however, they had to order a part and considering the age of my mower, I was thrilled they were able to fix it. The mower has never run better - it's almost like new!
Description of Work: I took my 20-year old Craftsman mower in for service and to repair the height adjustment mechanism on one of the rear wheels.

 + -1 moreThis last time when the problems persisted I got fed up and told my husband to take it to Orchard Supply and Hardware. they are new in the area and now Roy Boys isn't the only game in town for mower repairs. So what if they had to send it to California? It was still back in the same amount of time. The tech with Orchard called me and asked who serviced it last because they had put the oil pan on upside down and that in itself could cause problems with the way it runs. There were some other problems that a knowledgeable and reputable machine shop should have known better about too. Needless to say, when our mower came back from Orchard, it started easy, it runs like a dream, and we've had no issues with it all summer. I will never use Roy Boys again and I would not recommend them to anyone. And by the way, they aren't real friendly either.
Description of Work: Took the Craftsman lawn mower in again for service because it wouldn't run, idle was bad and it kept dying. We had been taking it to Roy Boys every year more than once and we have always just been told we have water in the gas.

 + -1 moreAdvice: Do be as specific as possible about how much work you are authorizing without additional consultation.
Description of Work: (I'm pretty sure I have submitted these comments on Roy-Boys a year-and-a-half ago, but since you guys say I have not, here goes again.) My old, Toro lawn mower had not been serviced for, say, five years or more, and it wouldn't start, blade was dull, cap on gas tank was missing, etc. So I took it in to Roy-Boys, explained the situation, and asked them if they could fix it. They said yes, estimated about a week, and I left it. It took a couple of weeks. They told me they had had to order a part (the mower was, after all, quite ancient) and when it was finally ready, I went to pick it up and was greeted with a bill of nearly $300, which was more than I was willing to pay for an old lawnmower. They were fairly apologetic, but said that the largest cost item was for a new muffler (an unessential part that never was very effective), which they had had to order, and on which their technicians had spent a couple hours of labor because bold holding the old muffler had corroded in place. After some discussion, we agreed that I should have been consulted before going ahead with the muffler replacement and we negotiated a reduction in the bill, which I still considered rather high. But the mower runs fine now, and will have to last for several more years to recoup the investment. (It's still very noisy, as it always was.) The work they performed was fine.

 + -1 moreI had Roy Boys give my Honda lawn mower a complete tune-up and sharpen the blades. They did an excellent job, completed the work within 2-days, and the price was exactly what they quoted over the phone. Even though I have heard of their excellent repuation this was the first time I used them. My 6 year old lawnmower starts and runs like new. Hint: If you CALL for an appointment they will get you in quickly and the service will be performed in 1-2 days. If you simply drop in without an appointment they require 2-3 weeks which is un-cool if you're anxious to get your lawn mowed.

 + -1 moreOur small Mantis rototiller wouldn't run continuously so we took it in to figure out what was wrong. The repairman was very professional and courteous. We were quoted 100. which was a little high as we only paid about 250. for the machine 15yrs ago and wasn't sure it was worth fixing. New ones range from 3-450. but my husband felt it would be worth it, especially if it runs for another 5 yrs or so (this is not a machine we have used more than 1x/yr. for last 6yrs). We had a tight time frame and Roy Boys really did a great job with the repair and getting it done by the weekend for us. Our only concern is that the final price was 30% higher than the original quote (130. instead of the estimate of 100.). The hourly labor rate is 76. which is nearly comparable to an auto mechanic. Considering the simple motor construction and ease to get into it, this was a higher labor rate than I expected.

When I got there, he accompanied me to the lawnmower to make an assessment of what it would cost and whether it would be worth fixing. He said it is worth fixing and told me that they could fix it for a price around $35, and that they were backed up about two weeks. I gave them the lawn mower to fix, and they were dead-on on their price and nearly dead-on with their time estimate (if not a little early). The lawnmower works fine. I would use them again.

 + -1 moreI had my mower serviced by a factory authorized dealer for 3 years in a row and after each service I would have to return it because it would not start after adding my own gas. They told me I was using old/poor fuel. It was Chevron fuel in a clean can and recently purchased(less then a week old). I then found Roy-Boys and had them service the mower for about the same cost. I have since use the mower for 3 1/2 months and 3 cans of gas without a problem. The mower even starts in fewer pulls then when it was new.

 + -1 moreWhen I bought my house, the previous owners left the lawn mower, an old, 21-inch Murray push mower. It worked okay, but was visibly "well used" and it had debris in the gas tank. Dropped it off at Roy-Boys on a Saturday, was given a sight-unseen estimate of ~$95 and that it would take 10-12 days to complete, and they helped me unload it out of my vehicle (an SUV). The work was completed on time, included an outside steam clean, the final bill was cheaper than the estimate, and they helped me load it into my vehicle. With dropoff and pickup, I interacted with two, separate individuals and both were pleasant. I would encourage an estimate based on actually seeing the equipment just so everything is above board. Also note, there is a minimum work charge that is not obviously noted (yes, there is a sign in the service/repair-side of the building, but my dropoff interaction took place in the retail-side and the sign wasn't noticed until during pickup when I saw it through a hole in the wall during my wait in line).

 + -1 moreEverything went exceptionally well. Very good customer service and my knives were all sharpened to my satisfaction. I had even brought my chain saw in with me, as the chain had come loose. They tightened it for me and showed me how to tighten it myself if this ever happened again and they didn't charge me for this.
