Sustainable Organic Lawn Care Services “Safety for Humans, Animals, and the Planet – Clean, Quiet & Renewable” Lawn care services from Clean Air Lawn Care Corvallis are a full-service eco-friendly alternative to traditional lawn care. Sustainable Lawn Care Sustainable lawn care means using clean electric and powered equipment for lawn mowing and maintenance that is run on renewable energy. Clean Air Lawn Care’s electric equipment is charged during the day by solar panels mounted on our trucks. Because we’re electric, our equipment is also noticeably quiet. We’re also committed to educating our customers and the public on sustainable lawn cares. Sustainable Lawn Care Benefits • Electric mowers emit 3,300 times less hydrocarbons, 5,000 times less CO, one-fifth as much NOx as gas lawn mowers. • Emissions are reduced to zero when run on renewable energy. • Electric equipment is 50 – 70% quieter than gas-powered lawn equipment. Our Sustainable Lawn Care Practices • Electric equipment is charged using solar panels on our trucks and wind energy powering our shops. • All of our greenhouse gas emissions are offset by wind power and carbon offsets purchased from Carbonfund.org to ensure our entire operation is carbon-neutral. • All grass clippings and organic matter is recycled, either on site or at a local recycling center. • We mow at a height that maximizes water conservation and nutrient uptake. Basic Lawn Care Services • Mowing - Accessible turf areas mowed per customer service agreement. Grass clippings are mulched when possible, composted on site, or removed to an organic waste recycling center. • Trimming - Turf areas adjacent to curbs, sidewalks, driveways & patios trimmed. • Edging - Edging performed at start of service each season and maintained through the year. • Blowing/Clean-up - Sidewalks, patios, porches & driveways blown with each mowing. Additional Lawn Care Services • Spring/Fall Clean Up - Prepare your yard and beds for Spring/Fall weeding, pruning perennials and grasses (other bushes and hedges as necessary), remove leaves and debris, and mulch if required. • Mulch Installation - Includes prepping beds, selection & delivery of mulch, and spreading mulch to dramatically reduce weed population, retain moisture & improve the overall appearance. • Moss Treatment/Thatching – Spring Moss treatment and rake out services to help you build thealthy turf. Moss treatment is typically followed up by the aeration-overseeding-topdressing. • Core Aeration/Overseeding - We offer core aeration in the spring and fall to reduce compaction and thatch layer. Aeration also helps provide oxygen and vital nutrients directly to the root zone. It is recommended annually and should be done in conjunction with organic fertilization. • Topdressing - Applying a layer of topdressing can be done with or without overseeding to provide vital nutrients to the soil to build a healthy lawn and soil base. This should be completed in the spring and may be required as part of a core aeration/overseeding. • Bed Maintenance/Shrub Service - Light pruning, weeding, and overall general maintenance of beds is included with a bed maintenance package. Complete fall cleanup/removal of leaves can be included in general bed maintenance. Service provided once a month, but can be customized to fit your situation. Mulch costs anywhere from $30 to $150 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. On the inexpensive end, red and black mulch are about $35 to $40 per cubic yard, and are typically made from recycled waste wood like shredded old pallets or deck material. Cedar, cypress, and rubber mulch cost anywhere from $100 to $120 per cubic yard. A pro can help you determine the type of mulch most suitable for your landscaping needs.
Topsoil costs from $12 to $55 per cubic yard, depending on the type you choose. For example, screened black dirt will cost about $15 per cubic yard. Loam (soil composed of sand, silt, and clay) costs about $17 per cubic yard. Standard screened topsoil costs about $20 per cubic yard. The type of topsoil you need depends on your landscaping plans.
Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.
No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.
Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.
