Contacted in October for install, they waited until January to order parts, then delayed install for another month. We mutually agreed to cancel our business together since I actually need heat THIS winter. Not an F rating because they did refund my deposit. But I've spent $$$ in electric bills with space heaters while waiting for this install, which then never happened. I really don't understand what happened with these folks. Would not recommend.

Response from THE STOVE DOCTOR
It’s so upsetting to see this kind of totally unfair review. The facts: I was contacted by the client the third week of October. She is located roughly 23 miles (one way) from our location. She asked that we presite for a wood stove install. I arrived on October 28th. She was no where near ready for an install. She wanted my advice as to an alcove to be constructed by other contractors to install an 8” diameter wood stove she had purchased used. 8” pipe is almost never used and is a special order. After spending over an hour with her and her husband, advising them on the details, I left, no charge. I was contacted again the end of November by her to let me know that construction had started on the alcove, but they needed my expertise as to how to build it. I went again to the jobsite and consulted with her remodelers as to what to build. I then ordered materials for the install, which were custom order and as such, non-returnable. I was sent pictures by the client on the 16th of December as to what had been constructed because she was concerned that it was not right. Being a professional, I told her “not what I expected, but I can make it work”. I contacted my suppliers and ordered additional parts. Due to Christmas & new year’s, some of the parts were delayed. When we communicated this. She became very upset and was verbally abusive with my wife. She also sent a very curt e-mail saying to hold on all and she was considering canceling. I don’t respond well to threats so I chose to retract my offer to install the stove. I had already incurred $700.00 in parts (not to mention hours of labor) that are non-returnable. I still chose to refund her full $1,000.00 deposit. Now I get the enjoyment (NOT) of reading this kind of review. WOW! I do the best I can to be honorable and do good business. If this client feels she is vindicated by her review, OK. I just hope when you read her review and my response you will give me the benefit of the doubt. I’m Jim Beck, owner of The Stove Doctor

I called to make an appointment for my gas log system to be serviced in late December, following an ice storm and prolonged power outage (4 days for us), and after calling around to other companies, Jim was the one who could come out soonest, though it was still three weeks out. This was unfortunate but understandable given the sudden demand of the local economy for alternative heat sources. Jim arrived right on time for the appointment and got to work right away. He thoroughly inspected the chimney, damper, and gas log system and turned it on, to make sure it worked. He noticed that the flames were very uneven, so he turned it off and rearranged the logs for a beautiful and even burn. He walked me through several options about how I could optimize my heat output from a gas fireplace if I were interested in upgrading, which I wasn't. He also educated me on how to safely use the system and options for keeping the cats and my about-to-be-crawling infant daughter from playing in there with the vermiculite. After I expressed that this, at least in the short-term, would only ever be a source of emergency heat, he made sure to drive home safety precautions to take since there is no safety spacer installed on the damper (which will also conserve energy by eliminating drafts). Jim did an excellent job and shared a lot of excellent information and options about what I can/should do to maximize heat, minimize drafts, and keep myself and family safe. The only critical thing I can say about his visit was that when he turned on the fireplace before he rearranged the logs, one of the logs got quite hot on one edge. Perhaps out of concern for the tile surround (not wanting to risk cracking/chipping it) he placed the logs on his plastic tarp that was laid out over the carpet. When he went to grab one of the logs, we notice that it had melted through the tarp, but, thankfully, appeared not to have noticeably damaged the carpet. Obviously, nothing happened to the carpet, but I think we can both chalk it up to a good learning experience.
Description of Work: Our house has an older gas log fireplace that the previous owners had never used and was something of a mess. I needed the logs arranged correctly and the system inspected for safety.

Jim and his wife, Chrissy, were professional, kind and knowledgeable. Even though the company was extremely busy with appointments being made two weeks out, they found a way to fit me in during this cold freeze. I recommend using them and will use their service for annual stove checks.

I want to say that maybe I misunderstood the service they provide. We thought we would get a chimney/fireplace inspection because we just moved into this house and the fireplace has a very old blower motor attached and we just wanted to make sure that we had a healthy chimney/fireplace. Well, they were late first of all but that is okay with us as we were home and things happen to make people late so we didn't mind. The service provider looked in our fireplace and told us how our very old blower unit worked, saw a dead bird he said he would remove (but didn't) and then he said he would get his father to write up a bid for additional work if we wanted to have a new stove/blower installed. We didn't get the bid until we called a few weeks later. The extremely nice woman on the phone apologized profusely about the oversight...again, we understand...things happen and it was the holiday period. Her husband returned and gave us a bid but not in writing. Just somehow it seemed like not a lot of service for $95.00. - somehow we thought we would get a chimney inspection, a bit more that a flashlight up the inside of the fireplace. We do feel that we can use the blower motor for a while, though, so I guess we did get something from it. I really hate to write a negative review when they have nothing but A's from the rest of their customers. Maybe it was us. Maybe they do the best stove installations in the world but we will get our work done from somebody else. Please read all reviews from their other customers to balance out our perceptions.

Response from THE STOVE DOCTOR
As the owner of The Stove Doctor, I am sorry to this customer for feeling the service was not what they expected. We strive to make sure all of our customers are taken care of the the best of our ability. The only response here is to say that I wish this customer had contacted me with their concerns before posting this kind of a review. I have complete confidence in my son Cameron's skills to perform this type of safety inspection, but as I was not the technician to do this exam I would have been more than happy to personally re exam their fireplace at no charge to confirm the original diagnosis, and I would still do so for them if they desired it. It is unfortunate that in this day of social media that this is the way complaints are handled. I prefer a good conversation to a bad review. Blessings to you. Jim Beck The Stove Doctor

There wasn't so much as a piece of dust left in my house. They were very thorough, polite and tidy....booties on shoes and everything. Considering it was a filthy pellet stove from sitting for years, I was very pleased with their consideration. I was kept informed at every step and he made sure I completely understood everything about my stove before he left. They made a special trip for me since I have been a long time customer...the LaPine house is totally out of their area. But if you have a stove around the valley area, you cannot do any better than The Stove Doctor. Reasonable prices, incredible knowledge and work ethics and just about the nicest family business you could ever hope to hire.
Description of Work: Had stove cleaned by another "expert" pellet stove person. Still did not seem right, information received on pellet choice and maintenance didn't make any sense based on what I knew from other pellet stove owners. Called Jim & received excellent information over email & scheduled a full clean up & maintenance work-up since it had only been used sporadically over the years (new home purchase). Jim & Cameron did excellent service, corrected what the previous "expert" had done, gave a full explanation on the proper use & maintenance of my stove - from starting it up the shutting it down properly, proper pellets to use, glass cleaner & annual maintenance issue to watch out for. The charge was more than normal because he had to replace a part & completely take things apart & clean them thoroughly for me. Annual maintenance is much cheaper. They made a special trip for me since I have been a long time customer...the LaPine house is totally out of their area.

Since my pellet stove is getting old and is my only heat so it is heavily used, he has come twice yearly (once maintenance and once service). He is nice, professional and always keeps the house from getting dirty or sooty and safety is his prime concern. He is a pleasure to talk with and deal with. He has had to make or retrofit a couple parts for me and he always does it quick. He arrives on time (or calls if his prior stop takes long) and he tries to make all his yearly maintenance calls in our town on one day. He quickly fixed my self-ignition lighter. He loves dogs.

I have had Jim clean and repair my stove for the last 10 years. His wife Chrissy calls me to schedule the appointment in the summer and they always work with my schedule. he orders parts when needed and is gives good estimates and always dose a good job. I leave a key to the house for him if I need him to fix the stove and I can't be there. They are a very small company just him and his wife or son. I would never think of using anyone else. He always leaves the house just as clean as it was. He always takes his shoes off before he comes in. He will move small furniture if I forget to. Very friendly to Me and my dogs and cat.
Description of Work: Jim comes to my house every year to clean my Harman pellet stove. He takes the stove apart and vacuums out the dust & soot from the pellets, checks the parts he can without turning on the stove. cleans the pipe answers any of my questions or concerns.

We scheduled two appointments, the first was more to check it out and the second to perform the work. Both times Jim arrived right on time, and was very careful to remove shoes and use drop cloths. Having done this for many years, his custom built filtering system on his vacuum was unbelievable, no dust in the air or odor of any kind. Whenever I vacuum the pellet stove, I can smell it in the air. The Stove Doctor had been recommended by a few different people and the service was fantastic, from the initial call to their office, follow up calls, the reminder the evening before each appointment. No wonder he has such a great reputation.
Description of Work: Our pellet stove had not been professionally cleaned since purchase, I have just preformed the work myself, however two items needed repaired/replaced. With an estimate of $410, Jim replaced the feed auger and the electronic ignition and thoroughly cleaned the unit. We purchased an Altair stove, which was manufactured locally and the business has since closed. Jim, as it turns out, is the local expert on the stoves and has many replacement parts available, the auger however, was built from scratch by Jim!

Jim is very professional. He gave me an estimate of the cost and labor to replace the auger motor within a few days. The estimate was exactly what he had told me. When he was done everything was cleaned up. I have used Jim for 10 years and would not use anyone else. I highly recommend him for any pellet or wood stove need including buying, selling, cleaning and repair.
Description of Work: The first visit was for my yearly maintenance on my Harmen Pellet Stove which included cleaning all the internal parts to be cleaned and checking to see if anything needed to be fixed or repaired before fall. On his inspection and cleaning of my stove which cost $130.00 he discovered I needed a new auger motor.

Jim arrives promptly on time every year - sends out notices early in the spring so I know when to plan for the cleaning. All equipment is ready, he usually has one of his sons helping him (in training to take over). The job is explained thoroughly, he will discuss any issue you may have and give you ideas on making your stove run cleaner and more efficient. Advise on maintenance the owner can do to make the stove last longer. I would never use or recommend anyone other than The Stove Doctor for anyone who has a pellet stove of any brand.
Description of Work: I have an "orphan" pellet stove - no longer manufactured - but Jim can repair it and every year I (and 2 of my neighbors) have him come up from Springfield to the Salem area & he services all 3 of our stoves in one day. He is very fastidious, efficient, cost is more than comparable to any of the other services. This year I had to have the auger replaced, which is why it cost so much more...it is normally about $150 for a normal cleaning service. He had told me last year that it would need to be replaced & he would have to manufacture it since the stove is no longer in production. It fit and works perfectly....
