Serving the greater Eugene, Oregon metro and surrounding communities, Steve's Masonry had its inception in 1975, when owner Steve Tofflemoyer began working with his father constructing fireplaces and other masonry projects. Steve started his own masonry business, concentrating not only on the conventional uses of brick and stone, but also escalating to include new styles of cultured stone, dry stack blocks and interlocking pavers for landscaping and much more. Masonry work enhances the beauty of structures everywhere. Just a few examples of our quality masonry services include: • Gates • Driveways • Patios • Fireplaces and chimneys • Building fronts These are but a few areas in which quality masonry boosts the aesthetics of construction. From the day we met on site to discuss the work to be done to the next day when he presented the contract, Steve went back on our oral agreement to do the work for T&M not exceed about $27,500. He said that only included a fixed price because this was such a good deal that he did not have to keep his word. He changed the contract under duress, but it showed a flaw in character. At the end of September, with only half the chimney protruding through the roof, Steve presented me with a written $5,000 change order with no specifics. When I asked him what this was for, he replied that the job had cost a lot more than he thought. I asked him if he understood that I did not have to pay more than the contract, on which $1,300+ was yet owing, and he said yes. I told him that I knew he had done additional work to help the HVAC contractor, for which I would willingly pay, but he could not come up with any other additional work that he had done. The next day we met at the jobsite so he could explain the change order request, and all he explained concerned the work specified in the contract. I told him I could not pay him any extra based on his explanation. He said that if I did not pay he would stop working. At this point the carpenters could not finish sheeting and putting a rain guard on the roof until chimney was finished, while the roofers were to come the next week, and the rain was coming the week after that. The house had to be enclosed immediately. One more attempt to reach a settlement when he presented me with a list of work that his people had done totaling $6,200. was all about work included in the contract, includin$59/hour to carry water from the creek. So I found another mason who completed the work in four days for about $3,000. Meanwhile Steve threatened to collect on his extra work based on verbal contracts (that did not exist buy he claimed he had credible witnesses) when the contract clearly stated that the only modification to contract would be written change orders. I ended up paying the balance of the contract to avoid further legal fees on my side and be rid of him. He seemed like a good fellow, and I think he did credible work on my new home as far as he worked. I just can not trust his word when it comes to honoring a contract.

Response from Steve's Masonry
The Member has falsified this report beginning with the very first sentence. There is very little truth in his information. He has also left out a lot of details. The truth is the Member took advantage of someone who should have never trusted him. The truth is that he has had multiple complaints and issues with multiple contractors he hired. I took him at his word that he would pay for additional work he requested and I was at fault for not having written change orders immediately. The change orders were due to additional work he asked for outside of our contract (and admitted to several witnesses) not due to costing more than I thought. When I did asked for signed change orders he had many stall tactics and in the end refused to pay for work I had done. This situation was only resolved because I choose not to spend any more effort, time, and money with someone so untruthful and who tried to talk his way out of the facts. The fact is the Member did not pay the “balance of the contract amount” as he stated. I agreed to take less vs. spend additional legal fees and time in court.

Steve came and gave an estimate. He charged $125 for the estimate, but subtracted it from the price of the work. He sent a contract within two days. After accepting the contract, the work was scheduled within a week. A crew of two masons worked for two days on the project. They were careful with the plants and the yard as they completed the work. They were responsive to suggestions and I was able to make requests as to how the finished work would look. When completed, they cleaned up the area and left it neat and clean.
Description of Work: An existing brick chimney needed repair. Some areas, including the top, needed to be rebuilt. New concrete cap and flue.

We checked out several masons and are EXTREMELY pleased with the work done by Steve's Masonry. They were prompt in getting our bid information to us and employed excellent customer service. Upon accepting the bid, they started work on the project within 3 days. The employees were professional and punctual. They are very fast and efficient. They were careful with the job site and were able to assist and work with us throughout the project. I was pleased they were willing to work with me on an odd request, including my parents ashes in the foundation of my home. They were happy to meet our requests and I highly recommend this company. They have a fair price, excellent follow-through and customer service and a high level of performance!
Description of Work: Poured a footing and foundation for a 3100 sq. foot home.
