Description of Work: My considerably large garden was overrun with weeds and had some major drainage issues. Shaun tackled those first, promising that I would be able to walk in areas that had been inaccessible half the year due to ankle-deep puddles. That goal accomplished, and a beautiful path established, he took on a series of beds with mature rhododendrons and other plants, treating them with mulch and compost and pruning them to allow light and air to flow. He built several stone walls with a real eye for the subtle rhythm of the stones -- these are works of art that give the garden a solid, old-world feeling. He also did a series of plantings of Japanese plants with an exquisite eye for detail and color. He knows how to group trees, shrubs and perennials so that they thrive together and support each other, including many that bear fruit. He sees form and function, food and beauty as equals in the garden, and attend to both aspects with loving care. He's the first landscaper I've worked with who achieves this balance, integrating the two so that fruit trees, berry bushes, fruiting vines, herbs and veggie patches are always accompanied by beautiful flowering plants and seem part of the whole vision, not just stuck on the edges or cordoned off in their own area. Shaun really understood my vision for the garden, and expanded it by sharing his considerable knowledge with me. Instead of working on paper for the design, we took time to walk through the garden a few times and decide together out there what would work best. He made some changes as he worked based on available plants and my preferences once I saw how things looked, and was very accommodating and flexible. He has great relationships with all the local nurseries and found many exciting new affordable plants to add to the garden. He is a force to behold out there, moving rocks and slinging compost -- things seem to happen almost instantly. He gave a conservative price estimate and then came in under the estimate, which was great.
