The seller of the duplex ended up completing the repairs prior to the sale finalizing. Tom was prompt and professional. I will call his company again in the future.

As part of the sale of a 30+ year old house, the financing lender required a number of repairs before the loan closing. I called Thomas Contracting Ltd (Tom Varnum) to give me an estimate. He was at the property at the time we set and did a walk-through of the work to be done. His estimate was the lowest of the three bids I received. He was willing to schedule the work around another job -- working over the weekend -- to finish this work in the time frame needed. I agreed to have him do the work based on the combination of price, timing, and his excellent reviews on Angie's List. The deck was the biggest piece of the work. Tom used quality materials and took his time to make sure the installation was done well, so instead of a dangerous rotting deck there is a well-designed, well-constructed, basic but beautiful deck, stairs and railings. We did run into a problem since the existing exterior faucet was located right where we wanted the deck stairs to be, so after talking about different options, he relocated the faucet at a reasonable time+materials add-on charge to the initial bid. Now the new deck and the new faucet both look and work great. The property inspector who did the follow-up inspection even complimented the quality of the work! The other work done was less extensive, but still completed with attention to detail and in a timely manner. With this contractor, the lowest bid definitely does not mean low quality work. He is very knowledgeable on the technical details, takes pride in doing a good job, and is easy to work with. I will definitely consider using him again in the future.
