Description of Work: Thornton and Thornton Construction gave us an estimate on a bathroom remodel, and even though we didn't end up using them, the estimate was extremely thorough and very professional, and Stephen was a very nice man.

Description of Work: I had the master bathroom design done from the coupon. The bath was part of a 5 sided area..He gave me multiple designs as we also wanted it handicapped accessible, full bath, family shower.. I then hired him to remodel the bathroom which is in progress. I have observed his excellent manner with the engineer and county officials. He has a lot of patience working with me in making decisions on what fixtures and finishes I want.He workmanship is excellent. I will consider hiring him again on another project.

The siding we had was dry rotting, because of the way the builder had prepared it. Those two, Thornton & Thornton, have been doing siding for a long time, and they really know what they’re doing. They don’t just talk up a fancy line. We found them on Angie’s List. We liked how knowledgeable they are. One of the guys is older than the other, and he is really gifted. It left us feeling really comfortable.
Description of Work: Thornton & Thornton Construction replaced some siding with hardboard. In the process, he also discovered some major dry rot issues we had, and helped take care of those. We’ve been through some wet weather, so there’s some more work they will be doing for us.

Contractor was punctural in coming to home at the stated time. He took measurements and seemed interested in the job. Stated he would send me a written estimate by email. Because he was in another job said estimate would not be sent to following week. No estimae. No call. No email. Very poor professionalism. If he was not interested he should have said so.

You are correct, of course. I should have called to let you know that we are behind, but certainly not un-interested. Perhaps you recall that my wife was with me that day. It was a good day. She's not with me many days any more. And as she started a new chemotherapy for the cancer spreading through her body, we had a couple of weeks of serious touch-and-go. I am obviously loosing her and it is upsetting and I don't blame you for being upset that I did not inform you in a timely fashion that we were late but still interested. I am seeking help to learn how to deal with this as well. Truth is it's probably not that long until I won't have to deal with it any more - but I'm not really looking forward to that time coming. Regardless, my deepest apologies for my neglect toward you in not calling or emailing.

Steve is punctual, professional, committed to detail and up front with his customers. Sub-contractors were highly skilled and professional. We were on a tight schedule because of out-of-state and foreign visitors and family events and we were worried that the remodelling would not be finished in time, but Steve assured us it would be and it was. The finished job was beautiful, including finishing touches.
Description of Work: Both bathrooms were extensively remodeled: new bathtubs, showers, cabinets, granite counter tops, tiled floors and walls, miirors, fixtures and recessed medicine cabinets . Skylights, attic ladder and ceiling fans in bedrooms and living room were installed.

In the past we have always called for 3 bids before beginning any major work ... we've done $100,000.00 in work since buying this house and spent the first $50,000.00 with 3 different contractors ... We have spent the next $50,000.00 with the Thornton's over 3 projects and already have the next one scheduled ... the point being that we are so happy with their work that we no longer bother with the 3 bid process. When we decided to go ahead and redo the kitchen we simply called Steve and Vicki, told them what we wanted and let them get to work. Our feeling is if you find someone who does great work, and has been fair about doing it, why would you ever call anyone else? They came over, sat down and went over ideas with us (I wanted to move a wall out a foot) and they gave their suggestions ... they walked us through every step of picking cabinets, flooring, paint, ... and as the dining room carpets were being ripped up (we decided to tile in there also) and discovered dry-rot, Steve instantly jumped in and repaired it ... very reasonably I might add ... so as to not throw the project off schedule. Not only was the job finished on schedule, Steve also did many other little 'extras' with the same pleasant attitude he's had since the first day we met him. I would highly recommend the Thornton's and, if you like, I have no problem with you calling me if you have further questions.
Description of Work: We decided to remodel our kitchen, dining room, hallway and entry. This was to entail all new cabinets, flooring, paint ... moving a wall back a foot, enlarging the entry way from 36" to 50". Move the refrigerator to the other side of the kitchen which entailed running new water lines for the ice-maker, installing a new dishwasher and micro-wave and having all the baseboards replaced throughout the downstairs.

From Steve Thornton: You have my sincere apology. I know it cost you time and money waiting for us to respond. My wife's cancer returned with a vengeance and I struggle with scheduling - to be with her when she needs me and to get my work done. She helped me so much with scheduling and returning calls and now I'm doing most all that myself - and not so good at times. But when I commit to a project, I make every effort to get it completed on schedule and to the client's complete satisfaction. Still, we fell down on our obligation to you, Members, and for that I am sorry.

I called Thornton and Thornton based on their high grade in Angie's List. At first they were very quick to respond back to me, and set up an appointmet to come out and view my project. After our initial consultation, in which I gave all of the details of my project, they responded back with what the owner described as a "very rough" estimate just to make sure they were in the ballpark. During our first consultation they also spoke of how behind they had fallen on various projects, how they have had to let workers go, and how they have been having some cash flow issues. All of these things should have been a red flag for me, but I continued with the estimate process anyway. After receiving their inital numbers I called and asked that they come back out to explain their design, and talk about firming up a price. Again, they set this meeting up in a timely fashion and met with us the following week. After going through some design options I asked them about time frames for completion, and construction start dates. They explained again that they were very far behind schedule...even overwhelmed...and wouldn't be able to start my project until sometime after mid March. They gave me a rough completion time as 2-3 weeks "depending on weather". When it came time to talk about cost I was told that they would have to go back and figure the cost of the materials, and add in all of the details that I had asked for (details that we discussed during our original meeting.) They left, and I waited for their final bid. After two more weeks passed I finally received an email from Thornton and Thornton apologizing for the delay, and asking for more time to work on my estimate. At that point I decided to eliminate their company from my list of potential contractors. Bottom line...I believe based on the reviews that I have read that Thornton and Thornton is a reputable contractor that does high quality work, although because of their lack of organization and time management I will not have the opportunity to discover that for myself. I would caution anyone who is considering using them as a contractor to evaluate their needs for completion date and construciton start time, and to question this contractor's ability to handle the project in a timely manner.
Description of Work: Received a "rough estimate" for the building of a custom patio cover. Met with the contractor twice to go over design and plan details.

Overall it was a very positive experience. I have had a number of remodels in the past and they have been the most responsive and professional that I have experienced. We had a tight time frame before Christmas and they delivered exactly as promised. The attention to detail was excellent. They are friendly and very helpful in selection of materials.
Description of Work: Basement bath was damaged by sewer back up. I removed distroyed carpet and cleaned up. They painted bathroom and stairwell, installed new fixtures, toilet, sink, and exhaust fan\light. Travertine was laid on floor with travertine baseboard. Carpet was then placed in stairwell. New moldings were installed in stairwell.

They have done a lot of work for me. They are getting ready to do a complete kitchen remodeling that would include new flooring and new countertops. They are very, very good. We are very happy with their work. They are very honest and have a lot of good ideas too. They finish the work on time and always clean up after themselves. I'm not stuck here. I'm free to come and go as I please. I can leave them alone in the house because I trust them. I just like everything about them. I have no problems with them at all.

The work was spread over three months. The work cost me $450. The guy did a good job, especially in the kitchen. It was close to 20 years old. The hinges were self-closing hinges, which were extremely hard to find. He was well connected and he could find me a contractor, who was able to get the exact hinges. So, they were an exact fit. He had to file them off in a couple of places. Other than that, everything was fine. He was very responsive and always kept in touch. He was very professional. I will be using them again if something needs fixing.

The first time we contact Thornton and Thornton it was for a siding job. We set up a time, and when that time arrived, no one was there. When my husband called, he woke Thornton up. We decided to give them a second chance and come out to bid on a bathroom remodel and hardwood floors. They were on time this time; however, we've still not received the bid. We met them on a Tuesday; they said we'd have the quote by the weekend....that was 3 weeks ago! I've never seen a company behave so unprofessionally.

Our deepest apologies to this client who is absolutely correct. Our conduct was unprofessional. We will make no apologies, but rather do our best to try to see that we improve in this area of our business. We are actually growing way to fast in response to Angies List inquiries and desperately need to put in place a system to avoid ANY potential clients from falling through the cracks as this one did. We are ashamed and will make the appropriate changes in our communication protocals to stop this from happening again. Steve and Vicki Thornton

Steve and Vicky Thornton are a husband-wife team. They were delightful and so easy to work with. I had had a general idea of what I wanted to do and other contractors simply told me what it would cost to implement my general plan. But Steve and Vicky went out of their way to really draft a plan that was far better than what I had thought of doing and researched the exact shower type we needed. After about three drafts, we were able to see how great our master bath would be--both in space, functionality, internal appearance, and exterior appearance. From the outside the addition looks like it was always there. His bid to do the job was fair and reasonable. During construction, Steve and Vicky continued to work with us in ideas to make it just right--sharing ideas with us that almost always were the exact right thing to do. Steve, in my opinion, is a rare old-time perfectionist and will make sure you are completely satisfied with his work. If you see something that needs attention, he is right on it. He is true to his word that he guarantees complete satisfaction. Besides quality work, they are wonderful personalities and so much fun to work with. I recommend them for any remodeling work with the highest confidence that they will make any job you ask them to do the result in the best possible outcome.
Description of Work: Remodeled two bathrooms. Hall bathroom had tile re-grout, new cabinets and sink, new mixer valve and shower head, new vinyl floor, and painting. Master bath off bedroom was totally gutted. It was a very small bathroom with a tiny shower about the size of one in an RV. In order to gain space for a larger shower, we had to knock out a bearing wall and extend the bathroom 4 feet. Then had new cabinets, sink, new glass shower, new vinyl, new toilet, sink and additional storage. Now the shower is large, roomy and it is beautiful. Everything for the remodel was top quality. Later we also added on the installation of a new mud sink in our laundry room--again they helped us find just the right sink to replace the old one.

We called them they gave an estimate suggested the more durable tile over replacing our linoleum with more linoleum, and we took that route at we were more interested in having something more durable over the long term. They did a great job. Took a day over our expectations but well worth the value and quality. Would recommend them to anyone looking for a quality job for a good price.

They were very exact in their work and really craftsmen as far as getting the trim and molding perfect. The windows are wonderful and I immediately noticed a big reduction in outside noise and also expect a large decrease in heating and A/C bills. They also returned after completion to wash the windows. My garage was cleaner after they left than it was when I moved in.

They spent a lot of time with us and have been out here at least three times. Our bathroom required extensive changes including knocking out a wall. They were the only ones that noted that the space we had available wouldn?t work for a shower that we wanted. They came up with a plan to put in a corner shower. He went that extra mile and showed us how he had put that shower in They had installed a drop down ladder in our church and did a good job. I get the feeling that he is very meticulous. They really made an effort to keep the cost down.

Very very well. I think I explained in detail above.
Description of Work: We called Steve on Thursday night and asked that a wall be built in our living room. He gave us a price we were happy with and was here on Friday to build it. Excellent work and just exactly the way we asked him to build it. Prompt and finished in one day. The sink in my kitchen broke and Steve was able to replace it the same day. Did an exceptional job and am very pleased with the new sink and the lack of mess that another contractor would have created.

The work was done with skill, precision and efficiency. The old sash windows were removed without causing the slightest damage to the frames or walls and the new windows installed in one day. A second day of about 2 hours was necessary to complete the final work and cleanup. All debris was removed, and no outside mud was tracked into the house by the workers. To complete the job, the windows were carefully washed inside and out to remove any smudges or caulking.

Quite frankly we were amazed that a company would go to that much extra work and expense just to show a home-owner additional options when there was a chance all their efforts would lead to nothing. Understand these were presented in such a way that we never felt pressured at all. When they left my wife and I discussed a few of their ideas and over the course of the next few days I called the Thorntons with numerous questions (all of which were answered without a sense of putting pressure on us to decide) and, as a result, we decided to spend $12,000.00 rather than the initial $3 -$4,000.00. Steve and Vicki are the extent of Thornton & Thornton ? no huge group of people traipsing in and around our home all day and yet they started, and finished, the project exactly when they said they would. Having dealt with many contractors over the years I can state without hesitation that the idea of hiring another contractor was very much akin to going shopping for a car ? we approached it with dread ? yet Steve and Vicki both made us feel instantly comfortable as they came across like simple working folks like the rest of us. Everything about the project was explained in depth and yet in language that even we could understand without feeling we were being talked down to. Another huge plus on the Thorntons side was the clean-up they did at the end of every day ? which is not something I could say about other contractors who have done work for us in the past. Their working area was always cleaned before they left. As to the project itself, we couldn?t be happier ? and the detail that they go through to make sure we were happy wasn?t even anything we asked for. When they had made their initial proposal they stated that they treat every job as if they are doing it for themselves ... which of course was met by skepticism on our part because we can?t count the times we?ve heard that before ? but both my wife and I agree that this is exactly the way they work ? the room (porch) came out incredible. As a matter of fact we?ve already contracted them for additional work inside our home ? and didn?t bother with the the whole 3 bid process because were so pleased with quality of their work. I will gladly tell anyone seriously considering a contractor to call me direct (503) 209-2664 and I?ll answer any other questions you may have. Jim Mackey
Description of Work: Built a fully enclosed porch on our existing patio all to code, screened storm windows with siding and roofing matching what is on our home. The first thing to know is that I always get 3 estimates and my wife and I had initially planned on a relatively simple ‘screened in ‘ porch like we saw on a visit to Florida … pretty much a roof with screens running down to slab … nothing real fancy and we figured maybe $3,000.00 - $4,000.00 and all 3 of the bidders gave us a price comparable to each other. However the Thorntons went a step further … while , in their bid, they said they would be pleased to do our project as we had stated, they also included very detailed proposals for a couple different options … things neither my wife nor I had thought of. Their ideas included drawings and costs so we had no problem understanding everything involved in each possible project.
