Dorson was very responsive and easy to work with during the whole process. The quote was quick and thorough. The work was done on budget. It took a little bit to get scheduled since he is busy, but he kept me up to date on the plans. Everything was done quickly once it all started. We are very happy with the work and plan to call Dorson for future projects.
Description of Work: He coordinated subcontractors to repair a leak from our upstairs master bath that was leaking through the ceiling in our dining room (removing drywall from the ceiling, fixing leak and replacing the ceiling piece, retexturing) and he repaired a leak coming from a poorly designed portion of our roof (resloping the roof, cleaning any water leakage and replacing tile on roof).

It was great, Dorsan came over late one evening to accommodate our schedule not his and listened to our idea. Then we scheduled another time for him to come with his Designer and the 2 took measurements and pictures of the space, and then they went to work. After seeing the drawings, we are excited to get started on the remodel. The design work was spot on. They listened to our wants and found a way to make it all fit together in the space that is allotted. It has been a great experience working with Jackson Construction.

My home has a failing foundation. Mr. Jackson has been instrumental in spearheading a study by a structural engineer, special framing to assist in the engineering study, and excellent design work by one of his associates. The work required to save the home from further damage will be extensive. We have heard that his work is upper end and high quality. Once financing is obtained, we plan to use him as our contractor. Hopefully will have more to write later.

At the first call for business... Jackson construction was on it. Always checking in to make sure our needs were met. Sending me many detailed designs and plans according to our wishes and price considerations. Many designs came over night even. When the bids came in the owner of Jackson construction personally over saw each contractor and organized them for us in one day. The owner of the Jackson construction was super patient with my aging parents and their wishes. Very kind. The house is in bad shape and problem solved many issues. The above figure is the bid price for an inside/outside job remodel including labor and materials. Here is a list of things he did that impressed me: 1. He brought in a designer to help us with vision and help with what would sell. 2. He brought in an inspection service to help make a list of what needed to be done before selling the house.. so the house could get a loan.. 3. He brought in a realtor that had been selling houses in the area with similar design and vintage. This helped us with how much we should put in the house to make it sell and keep some money in our pockets. 4. In the bid he listed the inspection service recommendations along with the bid by columns. It made it easy to understand. I had another builder check out his bid and he was amazed at the low cost and efficiency of this business. I highly recommend Jackson Construction. We have used them before and they never disappoint. Description of Work: He designed a kitchen and organized a large house remodel at my parents home.
We were very impressed from the first contact with the owner Dorson Jackson . He worked with us , presenting a complete and professional out line and contract , for each phase of our extensive project. The scope of this project included a design for safe and functional bathroom for our father. using an existing closet and laundry room . We added a beautiful atrium room for exercise and were very pleased with the way it was designed to our existing home , it looks as if it was always part of the original design. The kitchen was a complete upgrade to tile , counters windows and cabinet finishes. Dorson is vey focused on every detail, and will only accept the very best esthetics as well as function. He has chosen the best work crews who, are also efficient and focused on the details. The crew members were respectful , clean in working and left the job site in good order each day!! Dorson came to check on the work every week several times to ensure that everything was done correctly , and began each work day with communication with the crews . There was every attention to our concerns, and outstanding respect for our home. Home remodel is messy, and when a company cares to do all they can to keep it organized and as clean around it as possible it is a pleasure! The time line we had to work with was very exact, and every detail was outlined so that no delays would get our project off track. I worked in the design industry for 10 years , and this experience with Dorson Jackson was excellent. The integrity and respect for his crews and customer is outstanding and unusual in today's market.

Great job! I was thinking the construction company would call to send someone for a bid on the project, but that was my mistake. I called afterward to check on getting someone to come.
Description of Work: The designer came to look at potential remodel and submitted to us a 3-D design suggestion. The designer was courteous and knowledgable. The designs reflected nicely our vision of the remodel.

They visited us, discussed our desires and preferences and measured everything. They told us what we would get for the Angie's List special price and what it would cost for construction drawings. They sent a preliminary drawing, which we edited, then sent a final drawing. We feel we got a great deal, they were highly professional, and very helpful with suggestions and recommendations.

Dorson was excellent to work with throughout the process, from initial scoping to project completion. Always available via e-mail, text or phone. His crews were always prompt and considerate of our home, and did an excellent cleanup after finishing each stage. We were able to participate in the process as much as we liked, which help control the cost while giving us the final choice on fixtures, paint, etc. We are very pleased with the final project and would definitely use this contractor again should we have further needs.

I think the owner, who gave me the estimate, meant well but put me off right off the bat. While I was telling him what I wanted to do in that bathroom, which was fairly clear in my head, he kept trying to suggest ways that wouldn't involve actual replacement of components, even though I told him repeatedly that I didn't like what was in there and why I didn't like it. For example, when I said I wanted to remove hideous wallpaper and paint in there, he said it might be hard to remove and that it might be possible to paint over it in some way. He also kept pushing a granite vanity top, even though I told him that I wanted an integrated sink. I was a little put off that he kept talking about getting his top and possibly a vanity from China, as that does not exactly imply quality to me, even if it's cheaper. I suspect he knew that I was on a budget and was trying to find ways to avoid replacement of components. That might be fine if I didn't already know what I wanted, but I was very clear about what I wanted, so it was a bit frustrating when I got the estimate and it didn't even contain most of the things I specifically said I wanted. It was also several thousand dollars over the budget I told him. On the up side, I know he was trying to figure out how to save money, but it was clear he wasn't going to be able to provide me what I really wanted for the bathroom, even at a much higher budget than I expected. He was very responsive and communicated his timeline for an estimate clearly. He wasn't right for my job, but I think with the right client, it could be a good fit.

Overall, we were very happy with the work provided by Dorson and his subcontractors. We did the demo of the kitchen ourselves, and he then had subcontractors install the cabinets, level the floor (so we could install our new flooring), and the granite counter top. We had originally planned on having formica counter tops, but the subcontractor that did the work did not install them correctly. Dorson was attentive to our concerns about the installation of the formica, and allowed us to upgrade our counter top to granite instead (we did not have to pay for the formica due to the fact that the subcontractor installed it incorrectly). If we had any concerns with the work done by the subcontractor, Dorson was available and prompt in coming over to our house to assess the work himself-- he then contacted the subcontractors to come back out as soon as possible to fix the issues. He was there to introduce us to the subcontractors before they started the work, so we new who were working with, and would stop by to check on the progress and quality of the installation. He was easy to get in touch with, and promptly returned or emails/texts/phone calls. We really enjoyed working with him, and would work with him again in the future!

I had Dorson bid on a kitchen remodel. He said that he would have a bid to me in two weeks. It has been 5 weeks since he came out and still no bid. I sent an email inquiring as to when I could expect a bid, and was told Tuesday. It is now Thursday and still nothing. I had high hopes based on all the positive feedback here, but why would I want to trust a kitchen remodel to someone who can't get a bid in on time. I certainly don't want my kitchen ripped apart and no communications from my builder.

(member name removed) I am sorry for the miscommunication; I feel we have got off on the wrong foot while trying to put this project together. I think you might have misunderstood how my company bids on projects. You expected me to email my bid to you, however it is best for both parties to meet together at the site of the project and discuss the details of the bid. Many of my customers have given me high ratings for customer service because I like to take the time to explain my proposals in detail face to face. I understand your frustration, and would like a chance to make it right. I haven’t heard from you since we communicated after your review. Perhaps you prefer a different type of contractor. I understand it’s not always a perfect fit, but I always have my customer’s best interest in mind, and I understand when a contract goes to another party. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you more.

Very well. There were very few delays and that was primarily due to shipment delays, however we were well informed of these delays. The workers were respectful and patient with our situation as well. They made appropriate recommendations for equipment and the care of the equipment. They were very efficient at removal and disposal of old toilet, sink, and tub, boxes and cartons of new equipment. The clean up of the areas utilized for the work they had to do. They had to uninstall and dispose of a hydrotherapy tub, and do plumbing for new tub and toilet and sink. They also remounted a cabinet and lighting fixture that is appropriate for the bathroom.

Dorson Jackson, the owner was most professional and responsive throughout the entire process. He personally came to my home, discussed all my dreams, took a bunch of pictures, and came back with a thorough plan with clear cost information. Of course my dream was more than could fit within the $25,000 limit for the 203K, so Dorson worked with me to develop a plan to get the most out of my 203K loan. He reworked the plan a few times as I changed my mind and priorities and didn't display the slightest irritation. After our plan was finalized, then came the paperwork with the mortgage company, underwriters, and FHA. What a nightmare! You give them everything, and then they want more, or on a different form, and then more. When i was irritated enough to start cussing, Dorson calmly went the extra mile again and again.. Although we were unable to complete the project, I really want to share with Angie's List subscribers how wonderful it was to work with this man and his company. You won't go wrong with this contractor.
Description of Work: Developed and redeveloped detailed plans and provided consultation and support through the process of acquiring a 203K rehab construction loan to fix up a home I was planning to buy. An FHA 203k loan is offered by the federal government to help people buy and repair homes that need rehabilitation. In addition to completing detailed plans for the project, connecting me with the vendors to pick out my cabinets, flooring, appliances, and counter tops, Dorson Jackson completed reams of complicated paperwork for the mortgage brokers, underwriters, and FHA. In the end the appraisal came in too low, the owner wouldn't budge, and I ended up with a sale fail, but through no fault of this provider. My biggest regret with the sale fail was being unable to work with Jackson Construction through completion of the project. If I ever have need of a construction contractor again, I will be calling Jackson Construction.

My experience with Jackson Construction was very positive. Dorson Jackson, the owner, is great to work with. He laid out the time line of events, gave me a detailed estimate and worked with me on the things that I particularly wanted. He communicated with me via emails, texts and phone calls, keeping me updated on when subcontractors would arrive, changes in schedules, information I needed and decisions that I needed to make. The time line worked out very close to what I was given. The quality of work is excellent and I love both of my remodeled bathrooms. I?m very happy with the results. The tile work is absolutely gorgeous. The workers were punctual, careful and always left the work site clean at the end. There were just a couple of things that would have changed the budget estimate and Dorson discussed those with me so I could decide which way I wanted to go. Other than that, the final cost was what was budgeted.

I was very impressed with Jackson Construction. The owner, Dorson, was extremely knowledgeable and took a lot of time explaining the structural issues and other important factors that would effect the project outcome. His designer, Monica, was great to work with and produced some really nice drawings. They were worth way more than the mere $20 dollars that I paid for them ! I know that Jackson Construction went out of their way to bring their bid into line with what I could afford, as well as offering to do the job in stages. Had I not already had personal experience with another of the bidders, I would have hired Jackson Construction.
Description of Work: The owner visited the property with his designer to survey the proposed bathroom loft addition. Plans were drawn up and submitted to me. Necessary structural issues were discussed with me, the plumbers and carpenter were also brought in to look at the project. A very detailed proposal was submitted.

Throughout the process, we learned how lucky we were to have Dorson working with us. Like many others, we didn't have a clear vision of how and what we wanted would look like, we had better ideas of what we didn't like or want and we recognized that we needed help to shape our ideas and uncertainties into something that a responsible contractors can bid on it. Dorson never lost patience with us, he sent his designer Monica to work with us to come up with a 3D of how the end project would look like in colors and after a couple of interviews and visits, she did a superb 3 D of the kitchen, living rooms, dining room and laundry room and really helped us to visualize how the proposed changes would looked like, a 5th thing we learned, if your contractor takes the time to respond to your calls, emails, texts or questions when they are bidding on your project, that is a good sign, because there will be many more as you gets deeper into the process. Dorson then sent us to his cabinet person, his bath and kitchen supplier, his appliances supplier and his floor person, all reputable local businesses to further define what we wanted and to give us a more accurate idea of the cost of different options and choices we were making. He either made the appointments himself, or we were contacted by his suppliers, or we called; for other subcontractors such as electricians, plumbers, painters, appliances installers, carpenters, dry wall installers, Dorson actually scheduled a collective visit and tour to the house to explain to them what was likely to be the work ahead. As our ideas were becoming more clear, the choices were less overwhelming, we could always count on Dorson to tell us what are the differences between the options, his experience with one option vs another, how the options and choices can impact the budget and the rest of the project, most of our choices and options were not straightforward, set and done, still Dorson was understanding and patient to work with our back and forth and changes; a 6th thing we learned, if your contractor or project manager has a general building experience and a solid working relation with his/her different suppliers and materials, many more problems are likely to be anticipated early on and there will be less chance for unpleasant surprises later on the project. We were treated warmly, well and professionally by all Dorson's suppliers who clearly kept a close and good communication with us and with Dorson (thank you Monica, Rick, Gary, David, Mary and others). We finally settled on an affordable and alternative design and as Dorson pointed out, going through the designing phase, working with the designer and the different suppliers is the way to reach the clarity we needed to home in on the concretes of our project, aka, finally knowing what we wanted and what that looked like. Given our limited time and resources, we took the option to vacate the house to allow Dorson to put the resources he needed on the ground in order to finish the remodeling on time and we stored most of our belongings in a neighborhood storage and some in the untouched areas of the house. Dorson submitted a detailed bid with itemized work, cost and timeline for progress, it was not only the most understandable bid among the ones we had, but the one that best fit our budget and expectations, his bid had a greater transparency than others, he passed on the quotes from some subcontractors and for bathroom and kitchen supply he actually passed on his contractor's quote without markups, needless to say, Dorson's was the winning bid; a 7th thing we learned, a detailed, understandable and itemized bid allows you to see that your contractor is clear about what will be done and often how will be done and the timeline, instead of getting budget by rooms, by project, by phases of progress, with Dorson's bid we were able to make final adjustments to maximize our budget, leaving items out and clarifying and add additional items in. We gave Dorson the key to our house, the agreed initial payment of close to 50% and he gave us a date to start, the demolition phase was speedy and successful, followed by the actual building phase, floor preparation, carpentry, shower/tub installation, water, electrical, cabinets and floor, our project was scheduled for a full 4 weeks, and we must have visited the work on average 2-3 times a week, finding Dorson coordinating, inspecting or supervising in some capacity most of the time during the working days. Dorson was extremely responsive to our questions and observations while the work progressed and he scheduled weekly onsite tour to update us about the progress and some of the challenges and extras he threw in because of the quality standard he holds himself and his work, we found the regular and detailed communication immensely helpful as the project was ongoing and our house was going through this extensive remodeling; a 8th thing we learned, when your contractor works to stay on schedule and to the details and the content of the bid while be sensitive to the quality of delivery of his subcontractors, you know the planning was well done and all the unpleasant surprises that may justify a contractor to ask for more while the project is ongoing have been thought, checked and anticipated to a reasonable degree, which is actually the best insurance against overrun in schedule or budge, we had Dorson to thank for our peace of mind and joy to see the expected and reliable progress as scheduled and itemized in the bid and we truly need to highlight the exemplary project management we got from Jackson Construction, for us, it fulfilled exceedingly our initial goal of finding a Company that helps us to minimize the angst of going through an extensive remodeling against the clock. Before the work, we had extensive damages in our walls, they were carefully repaired and the painters were detailed and careful, we even got a sample wall to check the color matching after we have already finalized our color choices, as color can look different when they are under the actual light, angle and company of other fixtures. We paid the second installment of 30% plus with minor adjustments to reflect on some additions after the original bid. At the scheduled date, we received our house back with a result that satisfied us highly, during the working phase, Dorson's subcontractors were able to make improvement as they found such as firm up the connection between the hot air duct coming our from furnace to the rest of the house, which will lead to more effective heating, not to mention saving in the utility bill, we were pleasantly surprised that a few items we removed from the budget for saving still got done courtesy of Dorson Jackson what he called "bonuses", the biggest one was the paint of the whole garage, and Dorson received his last check with a bonus as a token of our appreciation for his quality work. A 9th thing we learned, the customer service is even more important after all payment are done; Dorson invited us to put together what he called a "punch list", in his usual style of timeliness and efficiency, he went above and beyond again, accomplishing all the details we pointed out as needing extra work and threw in a few more extras. The 10th thing we learned is how fortunate we were when we decided to hire Jackson Constructions for our remodel, a contractor who is interested in making his customers happy, a contractor who holds himself and his subcontractors to a high standard, a contractor who you can trust to have your best interest in mind even when you only have a modest budget, a contractor who values your satisfaction as much as his profit, we don't want to be selfish, great experiences and companies deserve to be shared, that's why we are writing this review to share our experience for your future reference, thanks to Dorson, his team and his people, we have a home in our what feels like a new house to receive our daughter on time.
Description of Work: My wife and I were looking to remodel our 1969 house to receive our first child, we wanted to replace our floor, redo the kitchen and the bathrooms, after researching a bit, we believed we needed a company that has design capability and ability to provide project management, we went on Angie's list and contacted a number of well reviewed companies. The 1st thing we learned was to find someone local, simply for the fact that further the contractor works normally from you, the less likely they are to have their team near by you and even if they are willing to confute to supervise your project, they will need to bill you more for the mileage, a contractor from Portland taught us that on the phone; Jackson Construction is a local company in Salem and provides remodeling services to its neighborhood. The 2nd thing we learned was there are companies that have the whole team (builders, designers, managers) and companies that don't; Jackson Construction has everybody. The 3rd thing we learned was there are companies with pre conceived notions of how much you need to remodel your kitchen or your bathroom and others work with your budget to best meet your expectations; Jackson Construction belongs to the later. A 4th thing we learned was there are companies who will charge you for the bidding process and companies that don't, Jackson Construction unlike most others, they seem comfortable and confident about what they can offer, they didn't charge us for the designing and the bidding process and they offered the single most thorough, dedicated and detailed process of all our bidders, that by itself in our remodeling process meant $300 to $500 of saving. Dorson Jackson who is the owner of the Company was prompt to reply our call and always timely to the appointment, from the very beginning to the very end. He listened to the ideas we had and asked relevant questions and provided highly useful input to start us in this very invested process. In retrospect, remodeling is a messy business, don't let anybody convince you otherwise, the difference of having a good Project Manager/General Contractor, someone who thinks for your needs, your priorities and your best interests honestly, timely and professionally, is well worth your money.

Dorson Jackson gave me an estimate, which was acceptable, started the work a few weeks later. They gutted the kitchen, took away the junk and started the remodel. I needed to pick out the cabinets, flooring, counter tops, backsplash, sink, faucet and paint color. Then there was a parade of subcontractors: carpenters, electricians, a plumber, flooring guys, granite layers, painters, a tiler finish carpenters and finally someone to install the new appliances. My final inspection of the project was accepted and the final payment was made.
Description of Work: The remodel of my kitchen and laundry area met my expectations. Dorson Jackson was professional and his subcontractors were as well. He finished the project as predicted. He worked with me to do the little things I wanted as I changed my mind. The completed job looks better than I envisioned. He paid attention to the smallest detail. I definitely would use him again.

we are in process of remodeling our house in anticipation of our first baby, Dorson and his company was highly recommended in Angie's List, even though, we are in the middle of the process, it is clear to us they have earned each one of their positive feedbacks, they were responsive to our call, set up an appointment within a week, showed up on time with an excellent Designer Monica, both introduced themselves and heard about our initial ideas to approach this remodeling, they looked the places we would like to have some work done, they took measurements and they asked some questions and answered all our questions, Dorson gave us the numbers for his "floor guy" and "cabinet guy" for us to see and chose the material we wanted, while Monica came up first with a 2 dimensional plan, then surprised us with a gorgeous 3 D plan with many different perspectives, Dorson's "floor guy" turned out to be a very reputable local business with a nice 2 stories show room and we have an appointment to see his "cabinet" person tomorrow, I can see Dorson is flexible with ideas and competitive in his bidding, we are most impressed is his dedication to our bid and the one stop shop experience so far we have experienced so far, as we approached to the end of the designing phase, which Monica gets a solid A, Dorson has asked me to take a pause and provide a feedback for this phase, which we are doing gladly. Thank you Monica and thank you Dorson, we look forward to the process ahead.

We are in the initial planning phases to remodel a very small bathroom. Dorson and Monica have been very helpful and great to work with in the design of our remodeled bathroom. On time. Great eye for detail in making the remodel design fit into the 1926 architecture of our house.

Thank you Member for the opportunity to design a remodel the bathroom in your old home. Your neighborhood is historic and has a beautiful view of Salem. I remember walking by your home years ago after walking home from Junior High with my friends. Just as Abraham Lincoln said "if I had more time, I'd write a shorter letter" it it is also true that it takes more time and is even more challenging to design smaller spaces. As always the greatest satisfaction is knowing that we got it 'just right' for you and your family.

We are first time remodelers. And from my experience going through a remodel is some what like having braces put on your teeth. You don't really want to do it. It hurts while your going through it. It doesn't look good while your going though it. It's expensive. But in the end you like the results things look and feel better and you're glad you did it. I had braces so I know what I'm talking about here. The project took much of the summer. Dorson is affable and knowledgeable in his field. He had some very good suggestions. One suggestion came while were were considering the flooring. We were considering hard surfaces such as wood laminate flooring. Dorson is big on tile but I don't like grout. Dorson showed up with a sample of a product we had never seen nor heard about. Luxury vinyl tile grouted in with acrylic grout. I should have known about it it was in Consumer Reports and highly rated. We love it. Its like having a sheet vinyl floor with the benefits of ease of cleaning but almost everyone who sees it thinks that its stone. We love it. Another specific suggestion Dorson made was the granite counter tops. I was dead set against it. I wanted corian. But I think now that would have been a mistake. We love the Uba Tuba granite in the kitchen. It has a matte finish that we really like. Dorson also suggested new toilets that turned out to be really nice and cost effective. He even chose the toilet seat. Its a slow closer. Really nice and quiet, no banging. All in all we are happy with our newly remodeled home. It looks good, in our opinion, and feels good. Kinda like straight teeth. I would like to think I could have done it all myself but I think my inexperience as a remodeler would have led to expensive problems and I would have been dissatisfied with the end result. So we're very happy we had Dorson's help.

Thank you for hiring me to replace the side door in your garage. South facing doors get the weather and sometimes are subject to excessive wear. Thanks for the positive review as well

When we contacted Dorson Jackson, he was very prompt in figuring out our needs and assessing the site. Following this, he was very quick to schedule the appointment and was prompt in his response to e-mails with questions regarding the job. He came at the scheduled time and worked quickly to get the job done in a timely manner. Upon finishing the installation of the framing and door, the room looked fantastic and you wouldn't be able to tell that it wasn't an original piece of the building architecture. We would absolutely hire Jackson Construction for any future construction needs.
Description of Work: We own a dental practice and turned one of the operatory rooms into a doctor's office. It had an opening in to the room, but no door or framing for a door. We hired Jackson Construction to come in to frame, install, and paint the door to match the rest of the office.

The performance was amazing. I pulled the doors off the hinges one morning before work, and the new doors were made up and delivered to my home before noon the same day. The doors were fitted to the old hinges with only an hour or two of effort and now are ready for paint.
Description of Work: Helped me tackle a woodworking project that I had to get that day so I could setup the beds so my kids could sleep that night. I’m working to get my house ready to sell and budget and time are both in short supply. Dorson managed to get me a set of replacement interior doors that were identical to the old ones-saved me the money and trouble of changing out the entire door frame and wood trim. Not to mention the painting I didn’t have to do. I got my badly worn doors changed out for a fraction of the price of entire replacement
