First, it is not easy to find any expertise in this area of replacing a downdraft. Most companies do not host a display to get any sense of how they look or work. We visited Lowe's, Home Depot, and Sears and looked at catalogs. Originally, we were going to go with Lowe's. They had a cumbersome process in which an installation inspection had to take place first to assure any new downdraft would fit. This cost $40. Then, they gave us the news that the intallation would cost nearly $300 in addition to the $550 downdraft--pretty spendy for what looked like an uncomplicated installation. They would refund the $40 if we went with the purchase. So, we searched around the yellow pages to find someone else who could install. Home Depot did not. Sears could do it for about $200, but their downdraft was more expensive. We called about 4 or 5 other places before landing on Brand Source. Not only could they do it, but they could get the part from Portland in a day. The owner even knew the part number from the top of his head. Their charge to install was $67. They arrived promptly and put it in. Unfortunately, we had some buyer's remorse. The lower cost Broan brand (matched Lowe's sale price of $550) was noisy as it moved up and down in its casing. We asked if they could fix it or replace with another. No problem. We went out to look at an in store display and saw an upgraded version, which would be easier to clean. They came back the next day, replaced the noisy one with a new one. They did not charge at all for the re-installation, though they would've been within their rights to do so. All the while, they were friendly, courteous and professional. It works great, easy to clean and quiet.
