Elk River Construction Inc

Both owners of Elk River Construction have been involved with the many projects refereced above for a long time. They are local and easy to get ahold of via phone, cell phone and email. They have always been above board, timely and always professional. They are kid-friendly too... and I should know, I have a handful of them. I have personally recommended them to several of my friends and will continue to do so. I know Elk River to stand by their record and have a huge list of happy referrals. I would like to caution readers to be leary of the super ugly, almost disgruntled reports on here, especially those who have never even hired the Contractor's services. It's too easy for the bad guys to hop on and leave erroneous claims. Elk River is the real deal... and communication is a big thing for me, these guys do it well. Be diligent.

We didn’t end up going with them because the bid had $23000 worth of hidden cost that they could not explain. It was really interesting. When we calculated the bid, the bid was $23000 higher than the actual cost per piece of the construction as they break them down within the contract. When we called them about it to find out where $23000 was going then he quit calling us back. It was absolutely crazy. When we were asking him about it, he said that this is how he does bids and $23000 is all the part of the bid. He would not give us any facts. I was flabbergasted. We talked with six contractors before we picked one and we were actually going to go with them because we liked the way they did things. They originally told us that they do everything and don’t subcontract out and it turns out that they were subcontracting out. When he gave s the bid I wanted some time to look it over and when I did, the bid and the break of the cost just didn’t make any sense. The drop periods did not match the bid; it was off price by $22897. They couldn't explain it. We confronted on it the last time and he never called us back, he never even emailed us. It was really unusual because none of the other contractors ever did that. In the other bids that I received, they had clearly mentioned how much money they needed to manage the project unlike the bid I got from Elk River Construction. I just thought that was odd. He had no bid in anywhere; there was no mention of how much it was going to cost him to manage the project. We asked him straight out whether $23000 was for managing the project. They charged us $500 fee for giving us the drawings and the plans for doing the addition on to the house, which we paid for, so we are keeping that. I was fine with that fee. They were highest bidder because of the hidden cost. We asked them how could we lower the cost and they did give us suggestions, but because we couldn't figure out $23000, it didn’t matter. No matter what we did, it still wouldn't come down by $23000. The labor charges were already included in each piece of the construction plus $23000, so it just didn’t make any sense. It was really out of line. They never responded back to our last phone call trying to get them figure it out and explain it to us. The initial bid they gave us for an addition of 347 sq feet area was $83000 and their final bid after we fine-tuned it was about $73000. There was no way I was doing that. I can understand hidden cost, but no one ever got back to me to explain it. We called, called, and even emailed them. I just wanted an explanation but no one got back.
