Was originally quoted a rate of $60/ hr for labor, which was then raised to $75/hr because Mr. Daily "had purchased a bigger, faster machine that would get the job done faster". Didn't quite follow his logic, but wanted to get the job done before the rains started and he seemed like a nice, competent guy. We discussed what needed done in detail and I didn't think I needed to supervise - he was the pro, right? Unfortunately, he did a horrible job - apparently doesn't know how to install a drain curtain, even with detailed instructions. First serious rain and the mud was back. It appears the ditch was not started at the far end of the barn where it should have been, the whole length of the ditch he did put in was not sloped properly nor dug wide enough and not topped with the right material (DG). It is only moderately better than before the work was done. Well, except the for section they missed. Very disappointed. I was also charged for an extra hour of labor because he had "brought his father along to help with the job". He had mentioned prior to the job that his dad often helped him on jobs, and they are called Daily and Sons, so don't understand his reasoning on that one either.
Description of Work: Needed a "drain curtain" installed along animal entrance to barn stalls to mitigate deep mud during the rainy season.

Response from Daily & Sons Excavation LLC
Regarding this review, this is the first I've heard of any failure with the curtain drain installation. We are honest in all our dealings, and we do guarantee our craftsmanship and are not out to pull anything on anyone. Below are my responses to the above complaint to help educate and help future customers understand the process. Rate increase: we first estimated this project in June of 2012 with a rate of $65 per hour (not $60). After our initial estimate, the client mentioned she would seek other estimates, which we recommended was a great way to check pricing. After 5 months lapsed, we were contacted again and were told the project was scaled back. We resent a revised estimate, however, we did mention that we purchased a new larger machine and our rate increased. We had explained this was due to 1, a machine that works faster because it has more power to dig, and 2, it consumes more fuel. Average rates for a 12,000 pound excavator are $75-95 per hour in the Rogue Valley. With this understanding, our estimate was approved and we scheduled the work. For anyone looking for construction related services, estimates aren't guaranteed for an indefinite period of time. If you've received a bid and any time has lapsed, it's always good to double check and get an updated estimate. Scope of work: as mentioned in the complaint, the customer felt we should've started the drain in a different area. Before we started the work, we reviewed in person exactly the work at hand. For water consulting, our customer had several meetings with the Jackson County Soil and Water district who gave her a plan of attack. The exact words that were part of the scope were "I'm going to... scale back to trying to fix the area along the drip line of the gutters." This was exactly the area we installed the drain which the customer approved. As for the mud, we installed this late in the season (which was not our fault) and the client chose to not pay for the DG to cap the area. With animals currently living in the area where the drain was installed, mud was already present for about 6inches. We tried our best to cleanup the muddy area with the understanding that in the spring she'd order DG and cap/grade it. The decision to not order DG was not our call, rather part of the new scope of work. As a contractor, it's our job to bring all details to our customers attention and we don't do anything that will jeopardize a project. However, if a choice is made by the homeowner because of budget and materials are cut, there is nothing we can do other than state the facts. Extra $75 on bill: this may be the only area I feel I could've educated our client better. We estimated a range, which was $605-755 based on $75 per hour. Our final bill was $680. That price of $75 per hour is for one guy and one machine. In our estimate, I never mentioned if we have a ground guy, that's an additional $35 per hour. However, my end goal was to meet our clients overall budget. When there is ground help plus an operator, projects run smoother and generally faster. In this case, having ground help allowed us to stay within our range for the overall project. I had only added $75 for ground help for 4 hours, which actually could've been more but we were trying to save money for the client. Without ground help the cost would've easily met the max budget, so in this case we thought we were helping the client, not trying to up charge just because. Quality of curtain drain: we have installed lots of curtain or French drains. We take pride in our work, and shoot all our grades with a slope laser. This particular drain had plenty of fall. First we dig the 1' trench to the slope we want, then we lined the trench with filter fabric before placing about 6" drain rock in bottom. We then installed the 4" perforated drain pipe. As an extra guard against contaminants entering the pipe, we also wrapped the drain pipe with a sock filter. We then placed drain rock on top of the pipe and folded the fabric over the top of the pipe making a burrito. We then used the cut trench material to cap the trench. This is the correct way to do a drain, and if there is still mud, the soil needs replaced with DG with road clothe underneath, which was not part of our project and the client knew that. In the end, it's unfortunate to get such a negative review when the elements causing the frustration are out of our control and were not our decision. We know we aren't perfect and strive to fix any wrong we have done, if given the opportunity.
