They made the wall out of big concrete blocks. They had to dig out the side of the hill, level it, and then set the blocks. They did good work at a fair price. It looks good. We haven't had any problems with it. They didn't work straight through, though. They would come on the job for a few hours and then leave and go to another job. That's the only thing we didn't like about them. There was also a miscommunication on a tree well that we needed dug out and they didn't quite understand what we wanted. We didn't get what we really wanted with the tree well, but they were okay overall. We have worked with providers who are worse.

I called for an estimate. Jake came out and gave the bid. He told me how long before they could begin. The crew arrived on time as scheduled to begin the job. The job was begun and finished in a timely fashion. The wall looks terrific! Jake, Brandon and Kevin were responsive to my suggestions and minute changes made to the plan. They cleaned up well. They carried the extra rocks I had ordered to my storage location of choice. This was greatly appreciated. I will use them again. These young men were strong and polite!

Very good outfit to deal with from the estimating stage all the way thru demolition of the old walls to constructions and on to clean up and from management thru all the workers too. Job went smoothly and was pretty much on schedule over the 3 weeks process. They are real craftsman in all aspects and did a great job. What a difference from other outfits we have dealt with in the past. Very happy with the results.
Description of Work: Replaced 3 aging wood retaining walls (6ft, 4ft & 4 ft) on slope above driveway with recycled concrete walls. Excavated slope to minimize height of the lower wall. Put in Concrete steps along the edge

Considering all the renovations we are undertaking on our home, we have decided to allocate our funds elsewhere for the time being. The Wall still deserves a positive review. It is clear they take pride in their work, and I have no doubt they would have done a top-notch job.
Description of Work: Rick, from The Wall, was extremely friendly, professional, showed up right on time and spent a great deal of time with us going over all of our options for a new driveway, entry skirt, and the drainage problems we currently have around our garage. Of all of the quotes, The Wall's was by far the most expensive but also the most informative. They helped us think about the "bigger picture" -repurposing the used concrete and possible of "phases" of construction to achieve what we really want. If I am MORE excited (and less nervous) about the project AFTER the contractor has left - I know that's a sign of a good company.

The experience was fantastic. The team hand chiseled the rocks so that each one would fit perfectly. Then the rocks were cemented together and then dirt was brought in to back fill behind the wall.
Description of Work: The Wall excavated from the front and side of our hilly lot and installed a rock retaining wall. The side wall is about 40 feet long by 4 or 5 feet tall. The front wall is about 22 feet long by 4 feet tall.

It went very well, the workers were on time each day. They worked in cold wet weather. They cleaned up each day before they left. They were very courteous and friendly. The work was very well done. We had a problem with a tree in the front yard and we had to change our original plan. I wanted to put the wall all the way across the front yard but if we cut the tree roots it would have made the tree unstable. They worked very well with me and we came to a nice looking solution. I was very please with their work.

I rate the experience an "A" overall because the job was a difficult one and the result was excellent (which for me eclipses all other considerations). The best part of the experience was the employee (Brian) who did most of the work. His work ethic, skill level, attention to detail, respect for adjacent landscaping, receptiveness to input, etc., added up to probably the best experience I've ever had with a contractor. However, other aspects of the job were not as stellar. Some work that was included in the quote was not performed, but I let it slide because it wasn't that important. The job extended for more than four weeks, although the estimator had guessed it would take no more than two weeks. I was repeatedly promised samples of finishes and colors that were not forthcoming. I ended up having the Wall use their colorant and sealer (the quote had not included these materials, only their application). They charged me an unconscionable amount for this! I know they were just making up for the fact that more effort and more concrete was needed than the quote included. I paid this without protest, although it would have been vastly preferable if they had acknowledged what they were doing. Thank you, Brian, for doing such a great job.
Description of Work: They resurfaced a large, irregularly-shaped, multilevel patio with stamped concrete. The work entailed having to replace and/or add to adjacent brick work and pavers.

Estimator arrived on time and discussed in detail the requirements and their approach. Their estimate was the middle of three prices. Supplies were delivered and work begun as scheduled. They were careful not to damage mature trees and completed the job on schedule. Dust and rubble were cleaned up. They honored both their senior discount and the Angie's list coupon.
Description of Work: Built a retaining wall across the property downhill from the house where erosion was ongoing. Excavated to level, filled and leveled gravel bed with perf drain pipe run out to daylight, erected concrete block walls and prepared for back-fill once soil had settled.

Response from The Wall
The work that the member requested was quite extensive and 7,000.00 it install a concrete floor, wall and walkway is a very fair and competitive bid. I would disagree on his comment that our price was "way too high". Maybe he was comparing our bid to the cost of doing the project himself, in that case I may understand his comment of our price being "way too high".

Rick(owner) worked with me on the estimate and made suggestions on where to save money. Chris (concrete division) oversaw the project and kept me inside the communication loop, as the weather was very wet and cold, so the job took longer than expected. The crew was valient in working under extreme conditions, at least from my perspective of viewing them from the warmth of my home. When there were some minor adjustments to be made, the requests were met with immediate action. There is still one more thing to be done and I have a call into Chris now. Even though I have paid in full, which I don't usually do untill the job is satisfactory completed, I have confidence based on the past few weeks that they will finish the project to my complete satisfaction. As one of the crew said, "That is why we have been in business as long as we have." A do-it-right company with very personable employees.

They had to excavate all the junk we had there before and then they complied with city codes for a meter that was near. They also provided extensive amount of choices for us, constantly checked with us during the project to make sure that it was what we wanted and I liked that they had used recycled materials so I just liked them all in all. I like mainly their thoroughness and communication.

Very well. The company followed the design and requirements carefully; the work was performed on time and as requested. The initial delivery of bricks was not what we were expecting and the company had no issue with accomodating our wishes for a mixture of different brick colors, removing some of the first load and replacing with others without hassle. The work was performed over a 2 week period directly following the construction of a new deck. Everyone from The Wall was courteous, professional and helpful.

After some confusion over who was actually doing the work, the job was completed quickly and, for the most part, very well. The only gap was in the omission of gravel behind the wall (that was previously discussed). Instead a lesser volume of concrete debris was used.

They had slopes going two ways. It was kind of complicated and I think they did a really good job of it. Their estimate was less than that of two other providers. I got better vibes from The Wall than from the others, and I was comfortable with them. It took us 3 years to finally come up with what we wanted to do but we are real happy with it and the neighbors have been very complimentary.
Description of Work: We used The Wall to expand our driveway and put in pavers. In our area, you are not allowed to go over with concrete and you have to be seven and a half feet away from your neighbor’s property. When they built this house, we were closer than seven and a half feet, and so all we could do was add pavers to expand it. We couldn’t actually put in concrete. It looks like a little patio now. They also put in pavers at the end of the walkway so that we could have it slope down, so that the water would run off and we could walk through the gate.

I had a unusual situation, where I needed some retaining wall blocks (normally just dry-stacked) mortared together to be strong enough to hold water for a pond. A gentleman from The Wall came out promptly, and had a look at the site and what I wanted. He actually suggested that we *not* use their services, and offered a couple alternative methods that were easier & cheaper. I have nothign but respect for a person who looks out for the customer far more than his own pocketbook. The Wall is definitely on my short list for future masonry projects.

The crew did an wonderful job piecing the stones together and the finished project exceeded my expectations. They also did a good job of cleaning up after themselves when the project was completed.
Description of Work: We had a new 24" tall retaining wall built to support a new fence. The Wall tore out an existing dry-stack wall and replaced it with a hidden-mortar wall mostly made by recycling the stones from the demolition. One section of the wall also got a tumbled Bluestone top cap that makes it nice as a seating ledge.

There were some challenges with the existing grades. The old wall was "flush" with neighbors retaining walls on both sides. So the lower new wall needed to match those. Also the grade of the sidewalk where the lower wall is, is sloped, while the grade of the yard where the upper wall is, is more level. The final upper wall overshot the grade of the lawn in one corner (i.e. stuck up above the grade of the lawn). In the contractor's defense even though it looked wrong to me I approved the line before they installed. Otherwise everything went really well. I had a few haggles with the site superintendent about what was included in the bid, but it was all resolved to my satisfaction. It was a bit pricey, but I really wanted the two tiered wall rather than slope to a lower wall because of a 100' fir tree in the front yard (limit soil erosion). Also, they subbed out the concrete for the stairs and walkway so that added to the cost. I have had many complements on the wall, even from folks just walking by. Very happy with the end product.
Description of Work: Demo and removal of approx. 50' of existing 3' retaining wall and stairs, 2 boxwood stumps and old fence posts. Install 2 tiered recycled concrete retaining walls (lower wall 3'3" high, upper wall 2' high, both approx. 50' long) with new stairs in middle. New stairs were set back into property further to avoid the steepness of old stairs. Included backfill and removal of extra material. During construction added the addition of approximately 15' x 4' concrete walkway from steps to front of house (this accounted for approx $2K of cost).

Excellent. Frank visited, took measurements, and gave us a bid. We got one other bid. We are familiar with the work of this company - they've been building beautiful walls and other hardscape projects in the area for years. Their literature is also beautiful. We decided to have a wall built of recycled concrete rather than prefab blocks. The crew of 3 arrived a few days after we accepted the bid, and worked every weekday, rain or shine, for 6 or 7 days. They had to grind out a couple of little stumps and remove a neighbors fence to get at the space, dig out the slope, build the wall, cap it and put in the backfill. Very precise and thoughtful in the laying of the stones. Friendly and happy to answer questions but intent on their work. The finished wall is lovely and our neighbors love it. The neighbor who had their fence removed so the wall could be built elected not to have the fence put back (the guys from The Wall hauled it away for a small fee) because the wall looks so much better than the fence did.
Description of Work: Built a beautiful terraced retaining wall to keep the back yard of our new house from gradually sliding into the street, and also to level the yard so it is manageable and useful

I was very impressed with the man that came out to give the estimate as he was able to discuss all the options that were available in rebuilding the walls. I wasn't home when they came out, they just started to do the work. I am more then pleased with the walls, they are exactly what we needed. I would definitley use them again. They certainly deserve the A rating they have on Angie's List.
Description of Work: They did two things for me. They rebuilt one wall that was made out of cottage brick and was collapsing. They rebuilt it and added more cottage bricks to it, putting some drainage behind it and back-filled a little. I had a second wall that was larger and was made of broken peices of sidewalk which was built back in the 1930's. It was too low and it needed extending also as it had never really been finished. They took the old wall completely down. They then put in a foundation and rebuilt the wall with those pieces and other pieces of broken sidewalk that I had around as well as some that they had brought. They then put drainage in it and backfilled it too.

Frank Berrong originally came out to discuss the work and to give us a quote. He was friendly, professional, and a good guy. When we scheduled the work to be done, they were extremely flexible in working with us regarding time schedules we had. A couple of very minor portions of the work needed a tiny bit of touch-up, one not even their fault, and they made the changes without any problems and were easy to work with. They were not the cheapest quote we had, but were mid range. I am happy that we used them.
