The person who came was Jake, the son of the owner. They have some amazing equipment for tackling jobs like this, and it was fascinating to watch. Jake cut down and then pulverized the roots, to make sure they wouldn't come back for a repeat engagement. All in all, Jake did a fantastic job!
Description of Work: A couple of years ago, we took down an overgrown and out-of-control sweet gum tree, but we didn’t deal with the stump then -- imagining that it would just die off. Eventually we realized that this was just dreaming, and that we needed someone to come in and finish the job, by grinding out the massive stump. Who else to call, but in to the rescue came Portland Stump Grinding!

I considered renting a grinder for about half the cost, but I also know my ability with large machines. I called them was able to actually talk to someone without leaving a message...explained my situation with another tree being delivered and my need for this to be done quickly. They quoted me a price and that was the price it was also lower than most of the places I called. They were incredibly accommodating and were here within a couple of days. They called for a utility inspection which was done and they called me the night before with an expected time of arrival. They were right on time! The owner's son was the one who did the work and he was very nice and professional. He was interested in the other plants and trees I had as well. He ground the stump, made sure that debris didn't go all over the place, was very respectful of my property, and then cleaned up after the job as well. I would call them back without hesitation.
Description of Work: I had a 20" stump that needed to be ground out of the middle of my front yard.

Portland Stump Grinding did an excellent job. We had a huge Elm tree which required removal because of disease and danger of falling. After the arborist removed the tree, we were left with a large, ugly stump. We called several arborists and discovered that removing stumps is very low on their list of things to do. Many are not interested in removing stumps, and some who list stump grinding actually subcontract it out. We wanted to replant another tree and needed the stump cleared away. By luck, we found Doug Gillum. He had seen the stump when driving by. We called him, and he discussed the process by phone. The next day, he removed the stump, protecting the surrounding plantings, and did a beautiful job. We highly recommend him!

I called several companies for a bid, and Portland Stump was the first to seem interested in doing our job in a timely manner. I had asked for the cost of removing all the chips made by the stump grinder. I got a price of $500. I thought this was way high, however, after paying for a drop box, and labor to load, I would have saved money if I had PDX stump grinding do the cleanup. The machine (robotic) was a marvel and made quick work of the stump and root system. It took a little over three hours to grind everything. Jack, the operator, was careful not to cut our cable and FIOS lines that ran close to the project. Afterwards, Jack brought out this super powerful blower, and gave it to my son to blow out the garage. Dust and chips went flying out of the garage doors. When it was all done, the garage was free of chips. However, be aware that there will be dust everywhere. You have to remove the remaining dust with rags etc.
Description of Work: Removed HUGE stump and three large roots. This stump was 45 inches across the top, but the roots system had to extent almost 9 ft. and a foot down. In order to keep the price down, I did have my son expose the roots that had to be ground.

Gave an estimate over the phone and clearly marked utilities in advance. Arrived on time and removed the stumps quickly. Lost an Azalea bush nearby, but that could be a coincidence.
Description of Work: Removed a small and medium sized stump, 18" and 5" diameter.

Description of Work: I had 3 stumps located on a slope in an area that was difficult to access. Other stump grinding companies didn't want to do the job. Doug was able to do the job that others couldn't. I would highly recommend them.

I was SO pleased with this company. The people who cut the tree recommended them and I didn't even check them on Angie's list first. They bid the job over the phone and set up an appointment within 2 days. I had very tight access through a neighbor's fence, and wasn't sure if their big grinder would fit, but it did. It was a nearly-new remote-controlled machine that went cleanly through the opening. It only took about 1.5 hours, and it was done. I was concerned about damage to my neighbor's yard, but he was very careful, and so professional. He pointed out 2 spots that he couldn't get as low as he wanted because of obstructions in the immediate area, but I was fine with that. I don't ever want to lose another big tree, but if I do, I absolutely would hire this company again to handle the stump.
Description of Work: They ground out a stump of a freshly-cut-down enormous white pine tree in my back yard.

I needed to have two large stumps removed in close-in Portland and having no other reference looked here on Angie's List for a grinder, preferring a small owner operator. I called Portland Stump Grinding on a Monday night thinking I'd need to arrange a bid meeting. Doug asked me what the rough size of the stumps were and gave me the bid, saying he could do it first thing the next morning. I met Doug the next morning and the stumps in fact were quite a bit larger than I'd estimated. Doug adjusted the price modestly and very fairly. Doug went straight to work first with his chainsaw getting the large stumps to ground height. Doug was grinding within a short time and completely finished the job before mid-day. Doug is a great guy. He was prompt, earnest, and totally professional. The entire experience was quicker and easier than I expected. I can't say enough about how much I appreciate his work. I highly recommend him.
