+ 0 moreGreat! We had others come out to look at the job. Two bidders would not even give an estimate because of our steep metal roof. Another wanted to charge us an enormous amount because they said the scaffold would be so difficult.Oregon Chimney folks came out, had the scaffold up quickly and easily and were done with both chimneys in 2 days. they were professional and so courteous.
Description of Work: They fixed the cracks in the chimney and replaced the bricks.

+ -1 moreWe had a great experience with Portland Chimney and Masonry. Our chimney was leaning and needed to be either repaired or torn down. The owner came out couple of times to assess, give advice and help us determine what the best solution for our needs was. We ended up tearing down the leaning part of the chimney, repaired the rest. Everyone we dealt with on the phone, the owner, and the guys who did the work were really nice, attentive, courteous and helpful. Everything was on schedule, they even started the work a day or two early at their own initiative, due to the weather.

+ 0 moreThe crew was very thorough, and did a very high quality job. The job took longer than the estimator had anticipated, but the crew did not rush the job. They even took care of some extra problems (decaying top coating on the shoulders of one of my chimneys) that the estimator had not enumerated, all still within the contracted price. The team worked diligently through a record-setting heat wave. Everyone that worked on my house was courteous, and cleaned up carefully after the job was done.
Description of Work: Portland Chimney and Masonry ground down the mortar, re-tuck pointed, applied crown coats, and removed moss from two chimneys at my house.

+ 1 moreWe hired Portland Chimney and Masonry to do a cleaning and inspection of our new to us stove and fireplace after moving into a new house. Every step of the way was fantastic. Scheduling was easy, although a little bit out, time wise .. of course, it's fall and that's to be expected. We received a reminder call a day prior to our service, and a call before arriving at our location. They were actually early, and called to make sure that would be ok. Earl and Jose showed up and both friendly and professional. They pointed out a big issue right away, with how the wrong caps (standard roof vents, not chimney caps) were installed, and removed them for us. They swept everything and cleaned up well. We have white/cream carpet, and you can't tell that they were ever here. Being new fireplace owners, we had a lot of questions that they answered for us in a very friendly manor. I am completely satisfied and will be calling them for future needs. The *only* complaint I have, is I wish they accepted more forms of payment, and that's not really a complaint.

+ 1 moreScheduling the inspection and estimate was very simple and they were able to come out here quickly and assess the work to be done. I accepted the bid and was called by the scheduler the next day to get it on their calendar. They had an opening in a week, but said they could check if things could be moved around to accommodate my short timeline. They were able to schedule it sooner and get the work done. The workers that did the job were very courtesy and proficient. He noticed the original mortar had a tint to it, so he did his best to match the replacement to the color and it turned out wonderful. They were quick and the work was wonderful. Thank you.
Description of Work: Mortar replacement and tuck pointing of a chimney stack. Also cleaned up the moss on the stack.

The office staff was friendly, polite and helpful. I was given an estimate for the work over the phone and scheduled an appointment. Due to traffic Earl was a bit late but immediately set up. He was fast, clean and very friendly. Not a smudge of dirt was left in my home and the bill was exactly the same as the estimate. We have already recommended Portland Chimney to our neighbors.

+ 0 moreI got the estimate a few months ago and had been waiting on other remodeling/repair work to be figured out first. But then they offered a 10% discount and I booked the work. The workers were all polite, nice guys. They cleaned up well after themselves. Our chimney went through 3 stories (plus the big attic), but they had it dismantled in a day. The 2nd day of work was to patch the roof. It l They were very accommodating and answered a bunch of roof related questions I had (it's a high roof, I've never been up there).

+ -1 moreThe chimney leaked for a couple of years off and on after the rebuild. Mostly after a big rain storm in the Winter; I was mad and didnt know what to do to get it right However, after they came out again this Fall it finally seemed to be fixed now. He put a top coat sealer on the crown which seemed to have done it. It would have been nice to have them do the extra sealing back when it leaked the first time but I do appreciate them making this right.

+ -1 moreI love them, he is excellent. I paid for the repair, and it was reasonable. I used them on a rental house, because I sold the house, and the buyer said there was a crack on the chimney. Portland came out, and said it was a cosmetic crack, and they examined the whole stack. They discovered that the mortar had disintegrated between the brick up on top, which the inspector hadn't noticed, and I was able to provide the buyer a reasonable and competent price for that repair. The important thing is rather than spending 5000 Dollars on a cosmetic crack, I spent 1400 Dollars on re-mortaring the stack. I had used them prior on my house to re-point my chimney, when I had built my fireplace in my basement. They did excellent work. I also recommended him to my neighbor, and he fixed that.
Description of Work: I used Portland Chimney And Masonry Inc. The mortar had deteriorated on the exterior of the chimney stack, and so he took the bricks out, cleaned them, and re-mortared them into place.

+ -1 moreThey did an excellent repairing the chimney but never completed the job. After 28 days they were suppose to come back and seal the chimney but never did. We paid for the chimney work but not the seal work. We told them we would pay for the seal work after completion. Never heard from them again.

+ -1 moreVery unproffesional with getting information to me and paperwork. After speaking with the office manager on the phone, she called once recieving the Angie's List review, it not seem that they fully understood the lack of unprofessionalism. She seemed to be under the impression that it was a mere lack of poor handwriting. That was part of it. The entire experience was handeled very unproffesionally and they did not follow through with what I was told until I had to call and get things to happen, twice.
Description of Work: Called Portland Chimney to schedule a cleaning at my rental house. I had used them in the past with no issues. I asked if they would please make sure that all paperwork be sent to me. They told me that would not be a problem. The inspection was scheduled with my tenants and seemed to go fine. I had no complaints from tenants. A week after the appointment I still had not recieved any paperwork, or receipt of payment. I called and asked about it. It took them a bit to find any paperwork. When they did they said they would get it mailed right out to me. It showed up a few days later with a form that was filled out when they did the cleaning, along with a sticky note that had all the notes from my phone conversation about where to send all paperwork to. I had also asked them to call me if they found any issues with the fireplace or chimney. The inspection sheet had notes written in the comments section that were very hard to make out due to the poor handwriting. I then had to call them back again to ask about what they had found. Once they explained it to me we set up for an estimator to go back by the house the next day so they could give me a quote for some repairs needed. They told me they would need to access the roof, but not need in the house. I called my tenants to let them now. I recived a quote via email that again was very diffucult to read due to poor handwriting. My tenats also sent me an email stating that they were home all day and the company never came by. Not sure if they actually went by the house or not, or just used previous notes. Either way they handled things unprofessionally with me. I will not use them again.

+ 0 moreThe guy that first came out and did the original job in 2008 did well I think. However, the roof near the chimney started leaking again in the beginning in the beginning of 2010. They came back out and did some preliminary work - checking previous workmanship. They basically left saran wrap around my chimney. They never got back to me again after; it seemed like they didn't want to complete the follow-up. I believe I called them about a refund after this and they never responded.
Description of Work: Rebuilt the chimney because there was a leak coming through my roof.

+ 0 moreWhen it wasn't done satisfactorily, I called them and told them that there was a problem with them. All of a sudden the person that was helping me do house cleaning said, "There's some guy with a ladder outside". I had specifically told them, do not come to my house and do not come right now. I was calling the state construction board. They were here in 2 hours and just ripped out equipment that wasn't put in right.They just took it. We ended up not paying for their services because they done such a terrible job. When they are coming on my property when i specifically told them not to. I called the BBB. They made a mess inside my house, I called them and the guy said he would come out and clean it up. He did, excuse me, such a S**** job it took 3 of us cleaning after he left after they had allegedly cleaned up. They hadn't covered anything in the house when they did this, which they were supposed to have. There was soot and everything all over the wood floors and the furniture. Everything. It was a mess. The price was reasonable. I remember it being a good price. If they had done the work properly and it had been done well, the price would have been good. Unfortunately, I got what I paid for, not much.

+ -1 moreWent great. Servicer called to inform me he was ahead of schedule if I was available to meet him sooner. Once I got there, it only took him about 15 min to complete the work. I noted how fast it went, and he replied that he had already done all the prep on the roof prior to me arriving. Saved me time and allowed me to get to my next activity quicker. He inspected the chimney and provided some suggestions for improving what I was working with and what I could expect not having a cap on the chimney.

+ -1 moreI contacted Portland Chimney and they sent an estimator out the next day. They recommended that we have both our chimneys rebuilt, but we chose to have only the worst one done this year due to costs. They scheduled the work out two weeks to insure we have the right mason do the job. They ended up coming two days sooner than planned and in two days we had our chimney rebuilt. The mason was very neat and professional and his helper kept the job running smoothly. The chimney looks great and should last another 100 years! I had seen another chimney in our neighborhood that had been rebuilt by this same company, which is why I contacted them.
Description of Work: The mason dismantled one chimney from the roof line up. He cleaned the bricks and rebuilt the chimney using the original bricks, which was important on our almost 100 year old house. He also tuck pointed the copper flashing from our new roof into the base of both chimneys.

+ 2 moreDuring the estimating process the following was noted: The original Brick in the existing Family-room Fireplace Chimney, on the backside of the house was a mix of old brick salvaged from old buildings, The old brick was badly flaking and dissolving and the Chimney needed to be rebuilt. The other Chimney on the Front-room Fireplace, located on side of the house on the second level roof had been built with new Brick and didn't need the Brick replaced. It did need a new Crown and Tuckpointing of all Joints above the roofline. We agreed on the work and price for both Chimneys. A new SS Rain Cap was added to the side Chimney later in the work. Prior to getting the estimate I had spoken with Rachael, the scheduler for Portland Chimney and informed her that I had engaged a contractor for new roofing and would like the chimney work done before the roofing. She agreed and would coordinate with the roofer to do that and keep me informed of the schedule. When the Mason and Helper arrived to start work they asked for connections for power and water. Water and power connections were pointed out. They explained how they would use tarps to catch old bricks and debris, roll the stuff up and carry it away. They said they would alert us before grinding mortar. They explained how they would use plywood and tarps as needed to protect the roof and a scaffold platform for the grinding work on upper level side Chimney. The work began. Eveything went as planned. On his own initiative Rafael crafted an architectual design into the upper part of the chimney that he rebuilt. I'am very pleased with the Chimneys now. They really add to the house.
Description of Work: The Chimney on the backside of house had to be rebuilt. The existing rusted wind cap, crown and top tile were removed and the chimney disassembled brick by brick to just below the roofline. Then the chimney was rebuilt using new brick (Mountain Blend Mission). A new crown with a new 12" x 16" Flu Tile was added and a new Stainless Steel Directional Wind Cap was installed. New temporary flashing replaced the old flashing. The Chimney on the Front-room Fireplace on side of house on the second story roof required repair. The existilng broken crown with the top tile was removed and the morter joints from the top to the roofline were were taken out to a depth of 1". The Chimney was repointed from the top to the roofline and a new crown was rebuilt with a new 12" x 16" Flu Tile installed. Temporary flashling replaced the old and rusted flashing. About a week later when the roofer had finished putting on new roof shingles, the Chimney Mason and Helper returned and replaced the temporary flashing on both chimneys with the new permanent counter flashing. They finished the job by giving the Chimnys a scrubbing and acid wash.

+ 0 moreThe work went well except for cleanup. Some of the fluid they used to clean the roof material ran down the sidingand caused some stains. Portland Chimney sent personnel to clean up the stains and almost all of it went away.
