It went great. Rick called a couple of weeks ahead to discuss what I wanted done for the deal I purchased. I explained the situation, sent him pics via phone and we discussed what I needed to provide. Initially I was going to get finished plywood that I'd have to paint, but a neighbor suggested the melamine and I was glad I went with that. No painting required, it's finished already and it's strong! While no one will be walking on this, it will hold a person's weight if need be as it was installed onto existing cross beams. I purchased a piece of trim molding to finished off the unfinished edge across the front and Rick did a nice finished boxed edge. All in all it went great and Rick was a pleasure to work with. I'd highly recommend him. He's knowledgeable and has been in this business many years. He's a Pro.
Description of Work: I purchased a 2 hour handyman deal for $199.00. I had Rick from Neil Kelly install a 1" melamine board with trim in a window alcove ledge in my two story foyer. The ledge was about 11' above the foyer floor. Prior to that it was just sheet rocked and painted. It could not support anyone standing there to paint or clean the window.

Everything went very well. He first came to assess the damage to be caused by excess moisture from the deck directly above and quoted approx. $600. He said he would come Dec. 10. Meanwhile, he kept in touch by phone. He then came on the day he said he would, Dec. 10. Rainy day. He put a tarp overhead and worked beneath. He spent approximately 1 1/2 days to repair/replace damaged joists. When finished, he replaced everything as it was previous to the work and swept and cleaned up all debris.
Description of Work: Raised house to replace a partial decaying 92 in. 6x12 beam and replaced 1 floor joist composed of 3 2x10 combined together.

He arrived on time, completed the paperwork FIRST! He admitted he has a slight case of ACHD so loves to fix everything! Very personable and will do everything very completely and professionally!! Been in the business over 35 years and it shows. Not afraid to tell you he doesn't do that, but will recommend someone if needed.
Description of Work: This was one of Angie's Deals: 2 hrs for $99! Reg Price is $85/hr. He determined our Garbage Disposal was working properly in 15 minutes, replaced the caulking around the kitchen sink and put new caulking on window near sink, cleared the drain and fixed the recurring problem in the Master Bath, Cleared debris off the roof and treated it with moss killer. He can work and talk at the same time. Need to hire him back to replace a window!

Dave was on time, professional and friendly. Since we had tried a few homeowner fixes, I needed to walk through those and he told me what he planned to do to fix both the problem and our "fixes". He did a very good job. The dryer vent had split behind the drywall (the installer in the 70's had used screws which had made holes in the vent), so he removed a nicely cut section of drywall, removed the broken section and replaced it. He also ensured it wouldn't happen again by angling the vent toward the wall a bit better and then finished it off by replacing the drywall and securing with screws. It looks good and is functioning well. Since that didn't take the whole two hours, he also rehung a coat rack and helped a sticking door no longer stick. I will absolutely use this service again and will make a list of things to do (as was suggested by another reviewer, but I had assumed that the vent would take the two hours). This was a good experience. If you, like us, are thinking that you should be able to do this stuff by yourself, I want to share that this takes a lot of pressure off and gives you some piece of mind (and time!).
Description of Work: The main reason I called was to fix a broken dryer vent (cracked behind the wall). Since this didn't take up the whole two hours, Dave also hung a coat rack that needed larger mollies and figured out a sticking door situation.

They made the work seem like a bigger deal than it was and I felt that the work very minor and the bid was quite high for I needed done, which was painting, putting in a gas fireplace, and electrical work such as putting in light fixtures, among some work around the home. I felt their was a lot of hype and that my money was wasted on this service after hearing the estimate of $85,000 for the work, which I felt was very high. While they were through and nice with what they did, I was overall very disappointed in the whole experience

Before we ever ask a homeowner to commit to a remodeling contract with our company, we provide highly detailed specifications, highly detailed plans and a firm price (no surprises, no allowances). We then design to meet the client’s budget. In this case, we studied the property, the anticipated challenges and the anticipated costs of the project and provided our conclusions to the client as a first step in the process. The homeowner’s budget was simply not adequate to make all the changes desired. Homeowners are often surprised to learn of the complexities that must be overcome to produce a quality remodeling project. This can be especially true for a 1927 town home with plaster walls and ceilings, as was the case here. Neil Kelly is known for its quality of design, thoroughness of planning, competitive pricing and quality of construction. Our commitment to quality is built into our 68-year reputation. We regret we could not proceed with this project after our preliminary investigation but we are pleased the client could make an intelligent and informed decision before any construction was contracted or begun.

Thomas Lifschutz came out to quote a medium sized job. It took me a few weeks hounding to get a quote back, when it came back it was completely lacking detail, and ridiculously overpriced. If they didn't want the job there are more polite ways to communicate that. There was the name of a different project manager inside the quote (different from what was verbally communicated to me) with no explanation; my best guess is that he used another quote as a template and didn't bother to properly fill it out. Needless to say, I'm not going to be working with Neil Kelly.

I went through Clean Energy Works Oregon weatherization program to weatherize my house. They assigned my project to Neil Kelly. I had heard they were expensive but I have good friends who used them for a major remodel on their home and they were quite pleased with the work they did. Mostly it was fine. The workers were nice and Neil Kelly reps. were also nice and professional. One worker did mar a window insert but Neil Kelly took responsibility and sent it to the company for repairs. I appreciated Neil Kelly's ideas for weatherizing my house. They had good ideas for sealing the 1950s house. What I am quite unhappy with is the attic insulation. I mentioned to several different people with Neil Kelly that I didn't want blown in insulation in the attic. They all said it was the best and were unbending on the issue. Believing them, as they were the experts, I caved and let them blow in insulation in the attic. I did my best to have all attic work completed prior to the insulation, additional supports, wiring, etc., and had asked the workers to remove an attic fan at the far end of the attic. They failed to remove the fan and it was so loud I finally contacted Neil Kelly to have it removed. It was then I was told a hazmat outfit was required to go into the insulated part of the attic and they would not remove the fan, but did disconnect it. Now the nonfunctional fan is blocking an air vent in the attic and I was told not to try to remove it myself as I shouldn't be exposed to the insulation material. The other issue I have with Neil Kelly is the cost of the project. They are quite a bit more expensive than many other contractors in the area. They gave me a bid for some electrical work that was twice as high as the electric company I went with to do the work.
Description of Work: Weatherized the house: air sealing, attic insulation, duct sealing, floor insulation, three new duct returns, 2 solar tubes, 2 storm window inserts.

Not sure if this review is legitimate because I never actually saw anyone from this company they were impossible to get an appointment with and when I did it was going to be literally 2 months before they could even look at my project. After my initial contact with them, I had to repeatedly call them back to try and get an appt., I think they were hoping I would give up, and when I didn't they finally agreed to come out in about 3 weeks, with a promise they would not be able to do the work for 6-8 weeks. I will admit they were at least honest about the time frame and did not want to create unrealistic expectations22 for service. I'm sure when I emailed them that I no longer needed them I'm sure they were relieved to see me go. They might do good work, but I'll never know.

My front door did not hang correctly and the lockset did not work correctly. I had a previously purchased lockset installed which required a bit more work than anticipated, and the door was rehung so it swings better. The door works great now, doesn't stick anymore! I had a couple other minor things attended to. The kitchen skylight trim I had from before did not fit or look right so Lonny recommended that I get new wood trim. I had him come back for a second visit to purchase and install the trim. He did a great job and I am happy that he recommended putting up new trim.
Description of Work: Replaced front door lock & rehung door, applied new caulking in bathroom, began reinstalling kitchen skylight trim and then came back with new trim to install. Purchased a Big Deal for $80 and 2nd visit was $298.

Everything went very smooth. They were great in narrowing down options for tile, floors, colors and everything in between. The 7+ week project ended on time with almost no unexpected issues. The project was more expensive than if we did it ourselves, but the help in coming up with a great design and the lack of stress that usually doesn't happen with a project like this was well worth the price. I will definitely use them again and highly recommend Janel Campbell (designer) and Dan Moore (project mgr).

They called back within 1 day of my contacting them, and Thomas setup a time for the next week that was convenient for me at 5pm, which they normally don't schedule. That morning I learned I would be delayed; he very kindly accommodated and agreed to arrive at 5:30. He arrived on time, was very professional, listened to all my projects and ideas, explained a number of alternatives, and really worked with me to come up with a logical plan. The coupon is for 4 hrs of design work including a 3D rendition. I'm hoping the work estimate will come in at an acceptable level; I'd really enjoy working with them if all are as professional as Thomas. I'll update this listing as soon as I see the bid & drawing.
