The project went great. The Neil Kelly person who served as the initial contact, the project manager, and the four guys who did the work were all professional, skilled, and enjoyable to deal with. The windows look great and are keeping us cool during this hot summer. I'd like to note that I've always thought of Neil Kelly as a high-end outfit, a company we couldn't afford, but we got several bids and Neil Kelly's price was about average, not at the extreme high end as I expected.

At first, I was happy with this project. The work was done on time, the workers were professional and seemed thorough, and my house was nominally more comfortable after the work was done. The fixtures they used seemed high-quality. But as time has gone on, I am less pleased. Why didn't they texture the drywall where they replaced my bathroom fan? Why am I still finding knob-and-tube even if it was supposed to be removed? Why does the siding under my new window keep popping out? Little details that I didn't know about at the time that are bothering me now. And the savings were not substantial. I'm paying $1200 a year on a loan to save probably $400 on energy costs. Yes, my house is more comfortable, but this was not necessarily economical.

Response from Neil Kelly Company
While we do our best to ensure that every project is done right the first time, we understand that some issues may emerge over time. That is why we offer a 5-year workmanship warranty, and we encourage our clients to contact us immediately if they have any questions or concerns. We reached out to this member immediately after learning about his concerns through this review. Though it's been a couple of years since the project was completed, we are committed to the lasting quality of our work, the safety and comfort of our clients' homes, and to every client's complete satisfaction. We hope to have the opportunity to restore this client's initial happiness with his project. Chad Ruhoff, VP of Energy Services Neil Kelly Company

He was very good and he did what I needed him to do. He answered questions that I had about what I could do and he would tell me why I couldn’t, structurally so that I understood why I couldn’t. He was very good and patient. Everything on my list was completed and I even had him do some other things too.

Scheduling the project took a while. We were trying to keep costs at a minimum so we took it upon ourselves to pick up materials. We also primed and painted the materials to insure we stayed within the 4 hour time slot that we purchased. We were also asked to provide photos of the property as driving to the location was too far. The project was completed well in the amount of time purchased, however we had to do a lot of leg work in order to make it happen. It would have been nice to have been extended some professional courtesy and have them visit the site to assess how they could best utilize their time and to insure they had the right material rather than showing up and complaining that the photos didn't capture the elevation accurately. The project was pretty simple but was done well.

I called the Lake Oswego office because it is near me and because I once attended a remodeling seminar there. The person who took my call said that a job like mine might better be handled by their handyman service and that she would check and have someone call me back. The person who next contacted me was from the office on N. Alberta in Portland, and he was available to come right over, so I thought we were off to a good start. I don't know if he was from the design side of the business or the handyman side. He came on time, and we discussed the work, but we didn't click in person. I gave the "C" for professionalism because of how that conversation went. I had ready a sketch of how I thought I would lay out the tile for floor and shower, a detailed work list, and a list of all parts I had purchased. The room is small, and nothing was being relocated. As mentioned above, I had purchased all the major parts including cabinets and granite countertop and basically needed tear out, plumbing, sheet rock patch/texture, and lots of tile work (floor, shower, backsplash.) The fellow couldn't say how far out work was being booked. He told me that I would have to sign a contract and pay a retainer before he could tell me approximately how many months it would be until my project could be done.. Knowing when the work could be done is one factor in choosing a contractor, so I thought this was odd. I waited about 2-1./2 weeks and did not see a quote, so I made contact and received an email several days later. The e-mail said that he estimated my job would be between $19,000 and $26,000. To get a closer estimate, I would have to pay a "design retainer of $750." That means that for a small bathroom of less than 80 square feet, it would cost that much just for the labor and tile (which he required me to purchase through him). The next highest bid was several thousand dollars below his lowest, and the least expensive bid was about half his lowest bid. He couldn't "guesstimate" closer than that? That's why I rated the price a "D." I wonder if this is the way Neil Kelly normally works or he just didn't want my job. I had already talked to a couple guys who didn't want to take a job using my materials and my granite installer, but they were at least honest about it. Fortunately for me, I have found someone willing to do my job, so I am happy. In fact, I am not upset with Neil Kelly. It just seemed like an odd encounter or odd way to do business. It wasn't a good fit for me.
Description of Work: I wanted an estimate for a bathroom remodel using fixtures and cabinets that I had already purchased. A deal with a different contractor had fallen through, and I was looking for someone else to do the work.. I wanted someone who could supply materials such as sheet rock and nails but was willing to use the sinks, etc. that I had already purchased. I had already bought cabinets and countertop and paid for installation of those. I had also already hired someone to install my fan and lights. Basically, I needed plumbing, sheetrock, and tile work.

This was a coupon deal for 4 hours of handyman services. It was a really good deal and I wish I had another coupon for an additional four hours. It feels so good to get all these tasks taken care of. He was very responsive and didn't complain even though where he was working was sort of an obstical course in the roses. I appreciated his professionalism.

Shortly after purchasing one of the handyman specials for 99.00, Rick Swedblom promptly sent his contact info to me. I ended up asking him to replace 2 toilets that would require low-profile replacements due to the countertop being built directly above them. He promptly arrived at the scheduled time at 8am. He was very personable, professional, efficient and explained everything he did. The work he did was outstanding. He made a job, that would have been difficult for me, seem very easy. Would no doubt hire again!

I think they are pretty professional in terms of quality of work, but I think around about two and a half hours he was almost done so we thought we do some finishing up with wood protector so I went ahead and bought the protector, but when I came back he still seems to be working on it so that is kind of surprising so we didn't get around to finishing that job. I think may be if I had a three hour coupon he would have finished it in three hours because I have a four hour coupon I think he finished in four hours so that is what I felt. He really did a good job though. The work was good and I have no doubt about the quality of the work. The coupon price is good but at original pricing I wouldn't hire them. The responsiveness was more like "B" because I had to call back second time to remind them that I actually had called them earlier, but once I called them second time and I did get a call back. I would not use them again.

We considered six proposals for our project and selected Janel Campbell, design consultant, from the Lake Oswego Neil Kelly office, as the best combination of design expertise, personality, process, and reputation for us. We started working with Janel several months before we wanted to start actual construction because we knew that there would be many decisions that needed to be made ahead of time to make things go smoothly. Janel was very helpful in listening to what we wanted to accomplish and providing information about the options to meet our needs. We wanted a redesign of the bathroom to be functional, easy to maintain and attractive. We appreciated her help in narrowing the selection of materials and colors since there are so many products available. The schedule was developed and we were kept informed of any changes. Dan Moore, the project manager, kept us informed about who would be coming each day and the workers were all pleasant to work with, kept to the schedule, and cleaned up the area before leaving. We were encouraged to ask questions. We had a couple of problems and appreciated that Janel returned our calls promptly and had alternative materials to suggest or solutions for the problem. The project was actually completed ahead of the original time estimate.
Description of Work: Master Suite Remodel In bedroom just new carpet, lights and paint. The bath was a complete redesign and upgrade for aging in place. Got rid of a soaking tub and a separate shower and now have a large shower with adjustable shower head and a bench. Went from one double vanity to two separate vanities, and got rid of carpet and floor tile. Flooring replaced with Marmoleum.

Rick Swedblom arrived around 8 am and we initially discussed the list of things I wanted him to do. These chores included installing a new cellular blind; replacing cracked grout around the edge of the kitchen counter; installing 3 curtain rods; installing a TV mount; hanging a full-length mirror, a drying rack, a towel rack, a big picture, and a small rack; fixing a sink plunger; and installing a latch on a gate. He worked quickly and efficiently, and his ease, expertise and professionalism were exceptional.
